Whatsapp Provider Media in Android - General Questions and Answers

Guys, I'm using Samsung phone too and my WhatsApp media files is in a mess too since the location change a couple of months ago. Now I have media stores in these 2 folders, just like you guys:
1) Whatsapp/Media
2) Android/media/com.whatsapp/Whatsapp/Media (new location)
Now my issue is, I have photos back from year 2016. I can view it in Whatsapp chat (some of them can't locate anymore) but i can't find it in both the directories mentioned above. When I select 'view in gallery', and then i use MiXplorer to check the image location, it says: (refer to attached screenshots)
Path: content://com.whatsapp.provider.media/item (which i guess it is in obb folder)
How is this even possible? The image is not lost but it is not accessible by me anymore and I cant back it up. Due to this mess, I really want to tidy up my media files and move them into single location, presumably the new location but the missing files stop me from doing it. It's bugging me for a few months now

Hello Guys.
I'm new user in the community, but I am aware of this forum since many many years ago.
The thing is I have the same problem as the user above-mentioned in the quote has.
Is being a nightmare, as I cannot find any solution since I checked every single android path on my phone.
Any help would be great.
Thanks very much

AFAIK on Android, media files are automatically saved in your WhatsApp/Media/folder. If you have Internal Storage, the WhatsApp folder is located in your Internal Storage. If you do not have internal storage, the folder will be on your SD Card or External SD Card.

[Q] Can't access "My Photos" - via Gallery - on my microSD card anymore; HELP!
I don't know WHAT I may have done, but a few weeks ago, I updated my Droid 1's ROM to one of Bugless Beast's variants... and in the process, must have forgotten how to reselect my Gallery settings to recognize My Photos directory on the SC Card. I only get one folder with a bunch of logos in it, and that's it.
I can access all files and folders on my SD Card, and can even open each desired image - one-at-a-time in most file managers, but - try as I can, I can't seem to recall how to get Gallery to "see" the others on the SD card.
I even moved everything from the SD Card to my computer's hard drive (some 9 GB of files...) and did a format of the card - thinking it needed a wicked cleaning. Moved everything back, and - business as before... as in: "no luck". Still can't access any of the photo or movie files within Gallery.
...any takers??
Try as I might, I can't seem to find ANY location of a cache or data reference to Gallery. I used to be able to simply view ALL file folders that contained images... and now, it seems to be limited to a select few that have nothing to do with the "My Photos" folder or its respective sub folders. I wiped the cache and data on the device a good half dozen times prior to installing the latest Bugless Beast ROM V0.5, and yet - I still can't get it to "see" any of the desired image files on the microSD card. I even wiped all data on the card, formating it, and reinstalled all of the files. Still, no luck.
As an added bit of frustration, I attempted other ROMS, and had similar issues. Wasn't like this before I installed the latest 2.2...!
UPDATE... What's more, I also used to be able to select one of my sound files on my MicroSD card, and make it my ringtone, as well as assign similar audio files as alerts, etc. Now - I can't.
As my kids often text... "WTFIGO...?!?"
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Feel free to comment here, in this venue - so it might assist others, as well as post me - directly, to: [email protected]
Thank you for your kind assistance with this matter.
UPDATE STATUS REPORT:
After many attempts at trying different ROMS (Miui... VERY buggy; ShadowROM, Liquid Frozen Yogurt) I STILL had the same results - where only a few images still showed up in my Gallery (when I knew that NOT to be the case) and none of my audio files would save as ringtones, regardless of what I tried... I opted to go to "plan B" and to remove all files, reformat and reinstall the data to the 16 GB MicroSD card, resulting in the very same as before. VERY upsetting as noted earlier.
As I happened to have an extra 2 GB microSD card kicking around, I figured it wouldn't hurt to try to copy from my desktop - a few images of various kinds, as well as some audio files, and copy them into similarly desired and titled folders on the 2 GB card... then install same directly into the Droid 1.
Well, problem SOLVED. It was the ol' 16 GB microSD card. For future reference, it is marked as follows: "MicroSD HC C2 16 GB C16G Japan". I got this for my Samsung Omnia... a few years ago. I guess they really DO wear out after a while! Shame that. At least it's figured out! Thanks for listening to my rant...

[Q] PowerAMP path issue

I've moved phones, and my new phone calls it's internal storage 'sdcard0'. Due to the fact this is what my last phone called the external SD all of the file paths for my backups have been broken. The most important of these is PowerAMP, which is looking for the files in the wrong place. While I can get it to find the files, all data(artwork, ratings etc) is lost. I cannot move the music to the internal storage, as the folder is bigger than the internal storage.
Is there a way I can modify the data/apk to look for the files in a different location? I've changed the prefix with playlist files in windows before, and it worked.
Do I instead need to change the names of my SDcards? If so, what kind of problems would this cause, and what is the preferred method?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Sd card Q&A

Never owned a phone that came with microsd and this new Sony phone intrigues me. Biggest bummer about this phone is that it only comes with 16 GB internal storage. I don't know how this work since the kit-kat upgrade came out but my question is that say I'm a heavy Whatsapp user and and have lots of photos and convos saved onto my phone so can that automatically transfer to my sdcard? With this little memory im scared I might run out of room with all my other apps as well. Btw i'm not a guy that roots my phone so that would be out of the question unless that was the only last option to make this work. Hope to get some detailed feedback from you guys. :fingers-crossed::laugh:
I don't think you would need to root the Z3 to do what you want. I haven't had an expandable memory slot since my old HD2. Nexus 4 for the last few years, working with limited memory is something I wish to finally again leave behind.
I don't know how it works on the Z3, but with KitKat this is the gist:
Apps can write to the sdcard, but only to their "approved" folders. E.g. After 4.3 or so we got an /Android/data/ folder inside the root of our sdcards. Inside that are app package names. So if a developer calls getExternalFilesDirs() it will list an array, one being the internal Android/data folder and the other being the SDcard Android/data folder. However, no change is needed on the app developer if they let you browse directories (you can just point the save location to the proper data folder package name). So, for example, I use FX File Explorer and move files to /extSdCard/Android/data/nextapp.fx/files from my internal memory on my S4.
Currently the only negative are games like Baldur's Gate. They only install to the internal memory and at 2.3GB can not be moved to the sdcard. If you root you might be able to swap the directories, but I haven't tried as I prefer to not root. But as it stands, that 2.3GB would go against the 16GB internal storage.

Yea Iike the what's app itself is only cpl MB and I don't mind that on my internal but within what's app I have 3GB worth of photos videos from my group chats that I like to keep so I need to know if that can automatically be saved to sdcard or I have to find a different phone.

Where is WhatsApp saving the pictures? To tell you the truth, no phone post 4.4.4 without rooting will do what you need. So you may need to look for something with larger internal storage.

New Sheild tablet-Game recordings

Hi, i've just bought a shield tablet after getting absolutely sick of my galaxy tab s 10.5's lagwiz. Few questions i have.
I've been tinkering with screen capture, the files are stored on my 64 gb sd card but i am not able to delete the files. How do i do this? Can i choose a custom save location?
The power button is horrible, is there any way i can install a double tap to wake like feature without rooting?
Thanks
KKK:
If there's no file manager installed, you can only delete files by plugging your tablet into a computer, or by rooting and running SDFix or similar.
Lollipop:
You need to get a file manager to delete files from the sd card if you can't use the stock one. If ES File Explorer doesn't work already with some extra screwing around with the new Google File Pocket or whatever it is, you'll need to reformat your sd card perhaps.
Samsung:
Ironically, your colourful and unnecessary terminology for Samsung's incredible software belies its excellent addition of a file manager that does everything you want to do here.
Only pre installed apps are allowed to write to any of the areas of the SD card by default (without any excessive API requests) in Lollipop, and they aren't allowed to write outside their own directory at all in KKK. There are some other restrictions but I won't go into those here. I think Google was going for an iOS like experience.
Sent from my Galaxy S5
Haha, i'll be honest, you are right, the in built file manager in the tab S was superb. I've managed to fix it, somehow the screen recordings were saved to my sd card and wouldn't delete, not even with various 3rd party file explorers. I just took the sd out and connected it to my PC and now it has deleted. Job done.
Ok, so i am just wondering, although i can delete the screen capture files by taking out my sd card and connecting it to the computer first, surely there must be an option within nvidia share for saved files to be deleted. No 3rd party file explorers allow me to delete the content and i dont really want to take out my sd card each time i want to delete a random screen capture. What if one didnt have a PC, does nvidia expect the SD card to eventually become full and be useless? i dont get it, i must be missing something.

Android keeps creating unwanted folders

I hope someone may be able to help me with this.
I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 GT-N8020 running Android 4.1.2 with an external 64GB SD card. I store all my books on the ext SD card under a root folder called "Art and Literature" and access them with an app called Moon Reader Pro. Within the root folder, all the books are stored in subject folders and within those, folders with author names.
Every time I start Android and before running Moon Reader, I find that four duplicate but empty folders have been created at the root level. I keep deleting them but they always get re-created at boot up. The four folders are named for authors but are empty whereas the the four original folders (with the actual books in them, lower down the folder tree) are unaffected.
The app developer can think of no reason why this is happening as it occurs on boot when his app isn't even running so I'm looking elsewhere for the problem I thought it might have something to do with the many other book reader apps I installed to try out but subsequently deleted. I've made sure to erase any left over folders I can find that were created by these apps. One thing I thought of was trying to lock the SD card to see if this would provoke an error message of some sort but I don't know how to do that. Removing the card and re-inserting it after boot up sees the same four folders re-appear once it has been remounted by the filing system.
Sorry for a bit of a long winded story but I hope someone can help me track this down.
Trevor
Remove all the readers and test .
Thanks. I've tried that but it made no difference. Every time the SD card is unmounted (or removed) and re-mounted, even after formatting, the same folders are instantly created. It's really annoying.
