Hi there!
I'm tempted to say goodbye to Android Wear and jump to the "dark side" of Tizen, leaving my "trusty" Moto 360 2nd gen (the 46 mm size) and getting the Samsung Gear S3 Frontier (no LTE), now on offer at 329€ from a local retailer...
I still like my Moto 360 and think it is even now a good and reliable choice (even if AW 2.0 is still MIA...), so my "search" for something new is more a "caprice" than a real necessity
In my opinion the pros of Moto 360 are:
- smaller size (I have not a big wrist)
- faster charging times
- works as an alarm clock when charging (even when 100% charged)
- from what I've searched, Google voice commands work better than Samsung SVoice
But the Gear S3 has its own pros:
- a new gadget )))
- great use of the rotating bezel
- better screen
- better fitness tools + GPS
- better battery life (even with alwaus on screen???)
- mic & speaker to answer calls straight from the watch (when BT paired with the phone, as I'm not investing in the LTE version)
- perfect integration with the Samsung ecosystem, as I'm currently using a Samsung Galaxy S7 (no more duplicates with Android Wear, Moto Connect, Moto Body, Google Fit etc; all the needed programs are already "hardcoded" in the S7)
I forgot to mention that I don't rely on many 3rd party apps, so the relative weakness of Tizen compared to AW when talking about 3rd party apps is not a decisive factor
Has anybody done the same jump from Moto 360 2nd to the Gear S3?
Any suggestion/comment is welcome, thanks in advance
I jumped to Gear S3 from Huawei Watch. Small wrist is not a problem. You should check if your language is supported by S Voice since S Voice supports fewer languages than Google.
I made the jump, quite happy for now

I just made the jump. So far the only thing I miss is running google keep. The S3 doesn't support it yet. So many more functions in the S3. I love the rotating bezel and the screen is way superior.
I'm very tempted to grab a Pixel 2 (and sell my s8) with the VZW black friday sale, but I don't know if it is worth it. Before the s8, I had the 6p, and I really miss the pure android experience. Also, the stupid fingerprint reader placement drives me nuts. Was wondering if there was anyone else that has switched over to the pixel from the s8 and what their experiences were? Did you notice the difference in battery life? Camera quality? Day-to-day use?
I like the pixel 2 a lot better than my s8(sold) and the only thing I miss is Sam pay. You won't be sorry for getting the pixel. It's very solid plus 2 year warranty and first dibs on software.
Camera is better and battery is the same if not better on the pixel 2

Were you lucky in getting a phone that works? Did you have to go through any RMA processes for the screen/call issues? I'm a bit worried of the return process - really the only thing holding me back at this point.

I haven't used an S8...but I know what is to have a non-Google android phone.
Honestly from my point of view, the S8 is better in terms of screen size and overall phone width. (This is something I'd liked to have in the Pixel 2). S8 is still a bit tall for my liking.
So you might miss this screen size switching to the Pixel 2.
Now if you had a Google phone before and you miss all that. Then everything else it would be an upgrade and tie to you.
I've personally switched from a 6P and can't be more happy with the Pixel 2. But I always liked phones with less than 70mm of width that are easy to handle with just one hand while walking etc.
Sent from my Pixel 2
I had the S8, couldn't stand the bloat and general lack of responsiveness (my other phone is an iPhone 7).
I sold the S8 and was looking at the OP 5T to replace it but went with the Pixel 2. All I can say is, this phone is the best phone I have used in 2017. The camera is great, the screen is great, I have no issues and everything works.
The screen to body ratio is terrible and it's pretty big for a 5 inch phone, but I can live with all of those.
Every time I pick it up, it's a joy to use and is so fast and responsive.
If something happened to my phone, I would buy another Pixel 2 in a heartbeat. That's how much I love it!
Like above the only thing I miss about the s8 is Samsung Pay. Bluetooth on the samsung seems to work a little better IMO. My car and BT headphones seem fine but other bluetooth gadgets seem a little flakey (golf gizmos etc). I had the P2XL and sent it back. I've enjoyed the size and screen on the P2 more
Don't be fooled by the defects you see in xda. I sure that they are shining brighter because usually ppl don't complain when it's issue free... Every thing is on par with the pixel 2 when it comes to build quality if I compare it to my old s8 and my Moto z2 force that i have.

Great points! I definitely love the s8 screen and it's going to be weird to adjust back to the deep bezels (I think the transition would have been better if I went from the 6p directly to the p2), but like you said, I miss the pure android experience.

Yeah I haven't heard too many p2 complaints vs the 2xl which is a big reason why I decided on the p2. But I was also on the fence because I thought I would notice the difference in screen quality/resolution between the s8 and p2 (1080 vs 1440).

Samsung is more saturated which I don't mind. I'm not a screen junkie. I miss a little bit of screen real estate. I liked the P2XL screen except for the blue. that was awful. I still have my S8+. It will come down to bluetooth in the next week if I return the P2
Curious if anyone here switched over to the Pixel 3 from a Galaxy S9?
Would be interested in thoughts/comparisons if anyone has experience with both phones...
Thanks!
I was using an S9 previously.
I tried the 3 XL first as I also have a 2 XL, but the 3 XL was just too large and cumbersome, especially with a case on it. The regular Pixel 3 is a much more reasonable size so that's what I stuck with. I returned the 3 XL.
The P3 feels smaller in the hand than the S9. I didn't actually compare them side by side so it could just be my imagination, but the P3 feels very small. Great screen size though so no issues.
Despite it having an OLED screen, the P3's screen color is pretty weak so I used an app called Sa2ration to increase the P3's color saturation to match the S9 and P2XL. It requires root, just FYI. Looks great now! I'm very happy with my upgrade.
Came from an S9. Some issues that I had with the S9 are way too many settings and way too many apps. The extra apps included Samsung's redundant versions of just about everything. My experience is that Samsung likes to re-do everything their way, Bixby and all the rest are just redundant. And you can't uninstall that stuff, can't root the phone. Also, the Android security updates from Google are, in a word, irregular for the S9.
And to add insult to injury, to do something as simple as waking up the lock screen when you get a notification, you have to have an app to do that. Amongst the gazillion settings, they couldn't include that one *smile*.
The high points of the S9 are great screen and fast chip set. I find the Pixel 3 to actually be faster with the same chipset...most likely either placebo, or due to all the extra apps that Samsung gifts you with.
Anyways, I love the barebones Android on the Pixel 3, also a great screen, and a faster phone *smile*. I'm very happy with the Pixel, and much happier than I was with the S9. I have replaced the Pixel launcher with the Nova launcher, don't like the Google search widget and the time and temperature widget taking up so much space on my home screen, but with that change the Pixel is about perfect *smile*.
Yes I know a lot of people dont like the bloat of Samsung for good reasons.
How do they compare in terms of performance - battery? lagginess? I have heard that the S9 has done a great job minimizing some of the performance impact the bloatware used to have...I have had a number of Samsungs so I dont mind that much tinkering to get all the alerts set, disable the bloat, etc. as long as I get great performance to go with their beautiful hardware, so I am wondering how that aspect compares to the P3...
i switched from s9. Pixel 3 i awesome. no samsung crap apps on it and Bixby.. camera is better works well with google assistant. but.. s9 had much much better battery life and charging speed. i hope google will fix it soon
I'm finding the P3 to be slightly faster than the S9, but the S9 wasn't slow to begin with. I didn't have any issues with it.
My P3's battery life is about par with my S9.
I did...

I switched from an S9+ actually. I like the smaller phone size anyways. I gave my brother my S9 and I went to the plus. Just got my Pixel 3 yesterday and i realize how much I've missed the smaller form factor. And the screen is great and the software is fast. And it's way simpler than Samsungs UI. I believe photos are very close to each other. I'm still learning the Pixel but I enjoy using it.
One place for all the negative comments and feelings about Google and the Pixel 5. And just think, if we keep it civil the mods won't close it. And Pixel fans ... allow detractors to vent. (but not too much)
Pixel 5 almost Sage - Nov 3 - 4 delivery
So many ppl hating. I dont get it. Im leaving a Samsung phone for the P5 and couldn't be happier. Ppl gonna say the S20fe is a better deal but they forget that they have to deal with the horrible OneUI OS, and short device support for updates among other things. I haven't had a Pixel since the OG and I'm really looking forward to going back to stock Android.
Even though I pre-ordered and this is not strictly "hate" per-se. I wish the screen was 6.2" to 6.5" with a 4500 mAh+ battery. Part of me feels the 4080 mAh battery now is not going to give it any better battery life than my 3a XL.
@TokedUp
Samsung promised previously that all phones from the Samsung S10 and beyond is getting 3 years of OS updates and security updates. So the S20 FE should be getting well Android 11, 12, 13, and patches. I also can't stand other UIs other than stock or near-stock. My least favorite was not OneUI but rather Huawei's EMUI.
No hate here. People don't realize it's a different Pixel experience. Different strokes for different folks though. I always seem to come back to a Pixel.
I hate that it has 5G, a useless, dangerous technology.
I wish it had the 865 and Wifi 6. Other than that, I'm super stoked. Waiting for my pre-order

Does nothing for me since I have a Note 9 which could easily run Android 11 but will not get the update. I cannot wait to sell this Sammy phone as soon as my P5 comes.

Well done to the OP for this thread. I'll be happily following it and hoping it does as intended.

Basically, science says it shouldn't be dangerous to your health, but fake science seems to get more views and people buying into it everyday. It's non-ionizing radiation. Also, the frequencies 5G tech uses has been used by many other devices over the last 30 years.
Some tech/devices that have been using 5 GHz...radar dishes, cordless phones (like the ones you used to use at home), WiFi, etc.

5G uses 24 GHz which is a mmWave and has nothing to do with wifi. Higher freq 95 GHz mmWaves are used in weapons. Low power phones shouldn't be dangerous, but the higher power towers could be, but it's too early to tell. It's the reason some countries stopped or prevented 5G deployment.
Besides, 5G is an $100 on the 4a. I would rather have $100 than a tech I can't use.
Generally speaking, 'hating' on a product based solely on its published specs is absurd - either the company in question have made a device that you want to buy or they haven't.
However, Google 'made' the only handsets I've owned with stock Android which just worked. After my Nexus 5 screen broke, I bought the HTC One M8 - not cheap, but the specs were everything I could want (at the time). Unfortunately, the software blew chunks. I had a OnePlus X with a near-stock OS - but the software (particularly the camera) was buggier than a buggy thing in a buggy contest.
What I want is-
A google phone (stock Android that just works and has all the latest updates) with decent specs (would have been happy to pay a bit more for flagship CPU, but 765 will be adequate as I'm not paying flagship prices for it),
Ability to fit in my Dainese leather motorcycle jacket pocket (~Pixel 4 or smaller)
Ideally removable storage (uSD slot), or an option to spec 256GB (happy to pay more for storage)
Front facing stereo speakers (don't mind having top and bottom bezels if there's a good reason)
3.5mm headphone socket (I have decent bluetooth earbuds, but not as good as my wired earbuds that fit so much easier in my pocket)
Fingerprint unlock (ideally rear)
Decent battery life
Wireless charging
Video out over USB-C
This list in broadly in order of priority.. Obviously I pre-ordered the Pixel 5 before the launch event finished (or at least before it finished streaming for me - was somewhat laggy), but am disappointed that they left out some of my wants. Also no google watch again.
I wish we could get a pixel phone with more flagship specs , I was really hoping for a pixel 5 with a 6.8 or at least a 6.5 inch display. I prefer a big display but i hate all the ****ty uis that you need to deal with to have a phone with a big display .... I really wish there was another option for pure android other then the pixel. My note would be a worlds better phone if it was running pure android and have options to install any Samsung features you may need.
Dont really hate the new Pixel 5 just wish it were a bit bigger and faster

Faster for what?
They bailed on QHD after 5 years it was literally all I cared about (well unless they tried 4GB of RAM again lol)

Why not ?? lol but that really wasn't the point i was going for. Using the better current gen CPU 865G over the 765G would mean a yes faster phone but will allow it to last longer and still perform good a few years from now. that's how i see it so you may not agree but it still would be nice to have seen a bigger screened pixel with the 865G and not the Pixel 4a 5G
They should just team up with Samsung and put out a true fan edition phone that makes android shine in its purest form
The only reason we're here is monthly updates and the next gen software. Oh, and the camera.

This, and the physical screen size are my biggest concerns.
The early videos have somewhat eased my concern, except for the size of course.

Your my hero. List all your phones since than
My battery is dying on my Pixel XL, original version (Verizon). I'm looking at replacing the phone with a OnePlus 8T but according to the reviews, the pictures it takes are over saturated and the colors are off.
When considering the age of my Pixel XL, will I be disappointed? Will the pictures from the OnePlus 8T be better or worse than the ones taken with my Pixel? Has anyone actually seen a comparison?
I don't replace phones until I encounter issues with my current phone. I'm considering the 8T as a replacement because it seems to be one of the few remaining that is unlocked (TWRP), easy to root and selling at BestBuy for $599. I'm open to suggestions if there's another brand/model that I should consider.
Thanks!
I am not a fan of either pixel or onelus, to be honest, I REALLY like Samsung S21 Ultra, if thats expensive for u then maybe prefer Samsung S8, S8+, S9, S9+ cuz' those are classics

Thanks for the recommendation. I would never spend that much on a phone. To be honest, I have hated my S5, S7 and S10 work phones. Those have made me want to stay clear of Samsung because of the bloat and horrible cameras (S10's not as bad). It is interesting that you left out the S10. May I ask why?

If you use gcam with the 8t you have nothing to worry about. Its the stock cam that over does the effects. Also TWRP isnt available yet (possibly soon, in active pre-alpha testing) due to android 11 changes with decryption.

Very true Gcam is amazing on any phone
Thanks for the responses.
After weighing all of my options, I purchased the Pixel 4a (5G) even though I despise the Alphabet company. I REALLY like this phone. Excellent battery life, larger screen than the Pixel XL but smaller overall size, excellent photos, better performance, etc. The best part is that I didn't pay the "flagship" price but I still got a great phone. So glad I didn't fall for the "best specs" and "bells & whistles" trap this time around.
I ruled out the OnePlus 8T because I like vanilla Android and I shouldn't have to deal with botched image processing on a "flagship" phone and I don't like dealing with China based companies. I almost purchased the Pixel 5. So glad I didn't. The Pixel 4a (5G) truly is a great value contrary to what some reviewers have stated.
