Question adaway alternative - Google Pixel 7 Pro

So far I have used Adaway root based. Recently, however, I have encountered problems with this tool. (Blocking google results, etc..)
Do you have a better alternative please?
Thank you

Did you tried blokada 5? You can choose some different list that can be enable/disable if it block too much for your usage. You need to downlad the apk from the websit, the playstore version has less functionality.

I sprung for a years worth of AdGuard. Very happy with the results. (I also have AdGuard Home on the Pi-4. Not sure how much overlaped coverage there is with that kind of setup.)

That sounds more like a problem with the lists are you using, and not a problem with AdAway itself.
Lists usually block the domains that Google uses for tracking and ads which coincidentally Google diverts all links to in the shopping tab on Google search.

yes, I used the default list. I preferred the root version without local vpn, but I find that the localvpn version is better, because it does not require a reboot for every manipulation with the list.

I don't think reboot are still required after list manipulations anymore with magisk. I've been able to block/unblock hosts without reboots. when have you noticed a reboot was necessary?

I read it here on xda. And also unblocked websites work for me after a reboot.

Lifetime member Adguard here, wouldn't want anything else.

dns.adguard.com

I have used Adaway for many years in several devices. With Pixel 7 Pro I ended up with screen freezing and random reboots. I believe Magisk Systemless Hosts caused this. There have been no problems now, when I disabled the Systemless hosts.
So I've been trying different alternatives for Adaway. Adguard is really praised but maybe because lack of experience it didn't block so many ads then Adaway did. Also it slowed my internet speed pretty much.

Adguard DNS works perfectly and does not need root

If you're using AdAway try adding the links below to your Whitelist. Let me know how it goes.
*Ad.doubleclick.net*
*Clickserve.dartsearch.net*
*Googleadservices.com*

This here is the solution.
I've taken to just using AdGuard DNS the last year. Just apply the DNS when I want no ads, change it back to automatic when I need ads for some apps to work correctly.

Speaking personally, Adaway does everything I need, and at a level that doesn't require a VPN to continually run in the background. Need to be rooted though.

VPN thing is something what is bothering me with Adguard and many other adblocks.
I think it's going to slow the internet speed significantly.

The issue you are having is related to blacklisted domains, and will persist across any ad blocker or VPN that blocks the same domains. In other words, the problem isn't AdAway itself.
I am using AdAway 6.0.3 on my Pixel 5 with these lists:
{

"lightbox_next": "Next",

The only (non) issue I have with Google search results is the sponsored results are blocked, which is fine with me.
Consider using different lists or adding exceptions.

My response was mainly to the OP, but I doubt the Systemless Hosts module was causing your issue.
What version of Magisk are you using? What lists?

I did doubt it also but by disabling it, it solved the freezing. And I found lot of similar conversations that systemless host somehow caused the freezing.
I'm on Magisk 25.2. No Adaway installed at the moment because of fear of the freezing but I had like 5-10 random lists.

Odd. Is this freezing issue specific to the Pixel 7? Maybe there's an issue with the size of the hosts file itself; using too many lists could be a problem?

NetGuard can prevent applications from using the internet (=firewall).
You can allow/deny internet access for each application, even system applications.

There's no "best" - this is subjective.
You have a list of apps, and you can choose whether or not to allow an app access to the Internet over WiFi or Mobile data.
Whether or not you want to let an app access the Internet is up to you.
I have just released alpha version 0.2 with quite some things improved.

Not on a granular, per-app basis, at least right now.
NetGuard for Android works by creating a VPN service at system level. Based on your choices in the allow/deny screen, NetGuard will set up VPN rules for which apps are forced through the "VPN". The "VPN" isn't a real VPN; rather, it just sinkholes the traffic to nowhere.
The limitation here is that when creating these rules, we can only set which applications' traffic enters the VPN. We can't granularly control which requests or hosts they can talk to, on a per-app basis. It would be possible to set "for all apps" a whitelist/blacklist of IP addresses, but this would be quite different, and would likely be less useful as a firewall, and more useful as simply an "ad blocker".
The VPN interface doesn't tell us which app is trying to access the internet though - we need to set it up before-hand. There are ways to tell, but Google (or a careful OEM) could easily block those with SELinux policy updates, and the goal here is to try to get all the functionality we need without any kind of root access.
Nice app for non rooted users.
I've just created an issue on Github though.
French translation done.
I'll try to create an icon this weekend if I have free time. Let me know if you want a specific color,... etc.

The problem you have reported is probably caused by a broken VPN implementation in your ROM. I will look into it later this week more detailed.
I like to keep the current colors, realizing not everybody will like them, but I know from experience I can't make everybody happy anyway.
Thanks for your translation!
@Primokorn can you please try if you have the same problem with one of the no root firewalls from the Play store?

Disconnect Pro (NATIVE system-wide ad blocking) free in the Galaxy Apps store

Disconnect Pro for Samsung is now available in the Galaxy Apps store, and it's free for a limited time. It blocks trackers, malware, and ads just like Ad Guard, however it runs NATIVELY, meaning no battery draining VPNs running 24/7 or annoying key icon the status bar. I can verify it works after installing, following the setup process, and rebooting. Search for "Disconnect Pro" in the Galaxy App store.

For uninstalling you will have to remove it from device administrators.
I Installed it but it doesn't seem to do anything. Just a spinning circle. Also i don't see anything about ad blocking on the disconnect.me website. Are you sure that is included?

My device is in german, so i am not sure about what everything is called in english, but it should be: settings --> Security/Device Security --> Other/Advanced Security Settings --> Device Administrators
It works extremely well ! I think you need to be on stock ( non-rooted ) it uses knox in order to work.
It still works if you are rooted, but yes, you need Knox to be present on your phone. It won't work if you have removed Knox.
This isn't really useful for rooted phones and custom ROMs because you could just use AdAway. This is a huge boon for non-rooted phones, however.

I feel this is just better than adaway coz 1 doesnt need to update it manually if he/she wouldnt like to have a running notification always. And this is active blocking much more like a desktop browser plug in, works really well.
Im using Stock + Prometheus (disables knox) and it works for me seamlessly.

AdAway modifies the hosts file, it doesn't really need to be updated and it doesn't have any notification or background process running. Other non-root solutions like Ad Guard work that way, but AdAway doesn't.
AdAway is still the superior option, though Disconnect Pro is very close. The main difference I find is that when using AdAway, pages seem to load the blank ad space earlier, so if you are scrolling down a page while it is still loading or trying to hit a link, the page doesn't jump around. With Disconnect Pro, the empty ad space pops in towards the end of the page loading, much like the way it does with no ad blocker at all, so loading pages jump around a lot. Trying to tap on links too early often results in you tapping something else entirely as things jump around.
I noticed this difference right away after switching to Disconnect Pro from AdAway. I'm a power browser; I know what I am looking for, I scan quickly, and I don't like waiting for pages to fully load before I tap on links when I know where I am headed next. With Disconnect Pro, I have to slow down a bit and that gets frustrating at times. It is especially noticeable on forums.
That said, Disconnect Pro is still good enough. Solid ad blocking without a VPN or background process is my primary reason for rooting, and now I can get nearly the same quality of ad blocking without root. This is a big win.
I have downloaded and installed this and My Knox , rebooted and still seeing ads in Chrome. Any suggestions please?

My understanding is that you may still see Ads with Disconnect: its goal is not to remove ad, but block trackers.
I think that many trackers use the same url base that the ads themselves, so preventing the tracker prevents the ads, or maybe some ads does not work without their related tracker.
You can try to complement it with Block this or something like that.

Try the Samsung browser with adguard content blocker.
I don't see any ads in Chrome whatsoever.
Make sure you actually run Disconnect Pro and activate all three of the things in the pop-up. Simply installing it isn't enough.
This is the best ad blocker and tracker blocker. Less than 12 hours of having this app I haven't seen any ads. Follow all the instructions when installing this app you won't have any problems.

I take it this is another local VPN blocking solution? What licence is it released under? I wouldn't trust any VPN that all my data is passing through unless it's open source, so I would highly recommend moving in that direction. Would you say the primary advantage over NetGuard is ease of use? I personally need much finer-grain control of per-app host blocking, but I can see how this could be very useful to others.
So simple! And it supports Android 4+ which is nice because DNS66 supports only Android 5+.
Some Questions :
Where is the location of the hosts file(s)? Can I modify the hosts file(s)?
Suggestion:
What I want is ability to block image (do not download image to reduce data usage). Because it is unwanted content for me and this way can reduce data usage too.
I've tried it and I love it, but my one request is a QS tile for Android 7+ for easily toggling the VPN
Thanks for the feedback so far guys and keep it coming. I really appreciate it!

Correct. It's not open sourced as of yet, but it's in my plans. If Blokada is received well, I'd like to build up a community around it, with plugins etc.

Well NetGuard is quite a different beast, it's a firewall with per-app blocking. Blokada is an ad blocker. Tech behind both is similar, but since there's quite a choice already of adblockers on Android, I want to focus Blokada on extreme ease of use (unless the community would want otherwise). That said, some configuration options, like the choice of filters, will come.

Currently hosts are fetched online (and cached) and are not modifiable. Some flexibility here is the #1 feature to come so stay tuned

What amazed me is the amount of ads that ping even on apps I've paid for the ad-free versions within the app. Just from a day of use I had over 2000 blocks. The weather channel app has been the worst offender so far.
First of all, thanks for your great app!
Most of ads removed for mine, still some (may be local) ads remained. I am using this in Japan.
I understand your concept, ease of use first . if only some customization would be... (ex, extra choice of country ? something)
anyway thanks again, keep going!

Any plan for custom block? By manually loading/importing self-built hosts file, or by manually adding host/url/domain to already exist hosts file. This is useful especially for blocking local/regional ads.

Question Excessive battery drain while using YouTube Vanced

I have noticed a strange battery drain issue while using YouTube Vanced (16.15.34).
The battery drain almost seems to be on par with the display's battery drain (see attached picture).
It seems kinda unusual to me that this app uses so much battery.
Does anyone have the same issue or is this normal?

I have noticed a strange battery drain issue while using YouTube Vanced (16.15.34).
The battery drain almost seems to be on par with the display's battery drain (see attached picture).
It seems kinda unusual to me that this app uses so much battery.
Does anyone have the same issue or is this normal?View attachment 5292397

It's a vanced problem, they have a problem in their latest release. I noticed the same thing and it's a global problem. Check "Vanced" on Reddit and you will see many people are complaining about it.
Uninstall and install v16.02.35 until they fix this problem.

Please see this post by @Timmmmaaahh! in the Youtube Vanced thread. Maybe the excessive data consumption also leads to a high battery drain - at least I could imagine.
Has already been fixed, there has been a re-release. Update to latest Vanced Manager via Github and reinstall YT (+YT Music if you use that as well). And please don't make threads for issues about apps that have a dedicated support thread. That issue was already posted there anyway so this is obsolete.
Same problem. Thanks for the info

Seems it helped reinstalling/updating VancedManager as you said.
I did it through the app itself and it updated to 2.6.0 Crimson.
Then installed YouTube Vanced re-release (same version number like before).
Battery drain seems to have reduced.
Another thing though. We need to deactivate MIUI optimization upon every reinstalling/updating YouTube vanced, right?
So in the Poco X3 the option to activate/deactivate MIUI optimizations is hidden in the developer menu and can be accessed through clicking on "Set back to standard values" under "Autofill".
Although this is a possible way to access MIUI optimization settings temporarily, every time we are executing "Set back to standard values" we need to also grant permission to all the apps again.
This can be very annoying. Does someone have another way to access MIUI optimizations without this hassle?

Please, search and you will find. Or better yet: try and you will experience. Worst case you have to reinstall. This is all still very obsolete.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
It still does not work enabling "install via USB" option and consecutively installing via the app mirror apkm installer.
Guess we have to keep going the complicated route through disabling MIUI optimizations, installing Vanced, re-enabling MIUI optimizations and granting permissions for each and every app again.
If anyone can provide a different and more fluent approach, you are very welcome.

Well, now, at least internet works while it's on, but i can't see it's effectiveness - websites are full of ads.
What filters are you using? At what countries it's targeted on? Too lazy to check&compare internal filter within /data/data

Just sent you message through app. It's quite dissapointing, that logs will be sent to you without user knowing about it - there's no such info, that logs will be sent automatically.

We collect an errors that may occur in the app. We do not use Firebase Crashlytics to restrict access to user data. Please read the terms of the Privacy Policy. The Privacy Policy specifies what data we collect, see link: https://adprotect.app/agreements/en/privacy.html
Try remove and install the app again to solve this problem.

i found a similar problem as yours, see here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/AndroidQuestions/comments/mlituo
An user complains that vpn app doesn't work after rooting and installing Magisk app.
I think that some system apps (such as if the one responsible for VPNs) can be removed after rooting and the magisk app installation.
