Is it possible to build ROM that turns my phone into a midpoint between a smartphone and a dumb phone? I'm looking to combat phone addiction - General Questions and Answers

I've tried the apps that lock you out. I've tried blocking websites. I've tried getting a time locked container to lock my phone away from me. Each one of these options presents a set of problems such as easily overriding the lockout, or actually needing my phone for work or other useful features.
That got me thinking...would it be easy for someone who knows what they are doing to create a ROM that...
- Doesn't have access to play store
- Has Waze installed
- Allows browser access for googling/searching for info when needed but blocks websites like reddit and instagram with NO option to override ever.

[Q] android parental control / config lock

hi,
No parental controls on android, but I'm giving my phone sometimes to kids and, i don't want them to mess up with eg calling people in my list, starting messaging, reading email, going to porn site, installing new apps etc.. basically just let them play the installed games
Is there any ready made app or script anyone knows of that achieve that?
Basically, replacing the launcher by a launcher where i choose the apps, and which needs a password to exit (it has to also change the home button not to show task manager on froyo etc)
So not hacker proof but enough for regular 10y olds not to do bad stuff
Any idea? I'm nearly thinking of a quick of dirty bash script moving all apk's away and back...

[Q] Lost/Stolen Phone - track after the fact?

I did some search and didn't find anything, this may not be possible since it's a security risk but...
Now that installing apps remotely is available through the web browser android market. Are there any phone tracking apps that automatically work with default information?
So I remotely install it from the app market web page, and then track it instantly without having to set anything up on the phone itself. Any Ideas?
Try this one: market.android.com/details?id=com.lookout.labs.planb
I do not thave OT's problem yet...but i downloaded and gave it a try.
Amazing app, even turned my GPS on automaticaly and located the very exact position of my phone. (HTC Desire)
Well all good android anti virus software come with this feature
Like plan b available only from the market website
Some can even sound loud alarms!
Try avg and lookout
Both are nice
Great App.
Although I tested it first on my phone which is not lost and it did not work, but then tried it on the lost G2 and it worked well.
That's one thing Apple will always lack, an environment where developers can create applications quickly when an opportunity arises, such as the android web app market.

[Q] Desperately looking for an app that can limit Web contact for each app

I used to use Full Control with great success for my Xperia Z ultra, but since it updated to Lollipop it no longer works. I've looked in to some other apps for children and teens but they either have a horrible graphic overlay on the phone or simply don't do what I want. Basically I want the phone to look and act as normal, but I want the choice to exclude certain apps from accessing the Internet, like Google play or chrome. These could be accessible but only with a password. Or is there a way to inherently restrict access to chrome and play in lollipop? I don't want to have to create another user account.
Help would be appreciated!
WEll you need root for this

well i didn't see any xperia ROM on any sony device that has a custom firewall by default for this purpose. And i am still sure that it is highly unlikely that sony still included something in their roms. What you need is to root your phone. Then you can install a firewall by searching on xda. That will allow you to add a layer of security against internet access for you. It stand between your allowed apps and non allowed apps fo internet as gate keeper. But beware rooting will ruin your warranty status. You no longer can enjoy warranty from sony after rooting.

Looking for way to protect against theft.

Hi all, I work at a group home and one of the clients recently purchased an Amazon Fire tablet to facebook chat with his dad.
My issue is that thanks to the crapiness of humanity I know that there's a strong potential for the tablet to grow legs.
Without getting into details, the client cannot have the tablet always in their posession, and we can't conveniently lock it down anywhere, and ideally whoever is supporting him needs to have access to the tablet whenever possible.
I'm wondering if there is an app, or even better, a device, which can cause the tablet to alert my manager the moment the device leaves the property? Ideally something not easily accessed or removed.
I know getting a tablet just for facebook chat is overkill, I wasn't the one who purchased it for the client, I'm just trying to make do with what is available.

It's an Android right?
I had a look at the Amazon store for anti-theft apps but there were none that I recognised from sources I trust (nit that I have researched them, but maybe you can find a reliable review) You have to be certain it's from a trusted source as these type of apps require special permissions eg admin in order to do their job, and could be abused by a malicious app.
I would recommend Cerberus Anti Theft, I used them for years & they have a good reputation, even though Google removed the app form play store. This is because they had to link the Google app to additional downloads in order to maintain the functionality of the app that made it the best, after Google changed what permissions apps could be granted for apps downloaded from Google store.
You can download for Android devices from their website
https://www.cerberusapp.com/
However there is a potential problem with all antitheft apps, ie. Turning off wifi/data means you can't communicate with it(but Cerberus could be activated via SMS), also a factory reset will remove them, so if a knowledgeable person steals a phone/tablet they can remove the antitheft app, so possibly you would have limited time to activate it. Which is why I used to root & install as a system app, which meant only reinstalling the full factory Android operating system to remove it.
There should be the basic "fined my device" on Android built in (I'm not familiar with Amazon variants) but its not very powerful.
I'll look into it, thanks. It does have tracking but unfortunately that wouldn't alert in time to be able to accurately determine who took it.
If Cerberus can do sms then my manager might be able to get immediate notification if it walks away, once it disconnects from wifi
What I don't get is why isn't there a hardware based solution, something that you have connected to your wifi that alerts you if devices in connected to that wifi signal get disconnected. Or even simpler, bluetooth based.
The problem is that tablets don't all have data, and if turned off they lose the anti theft features. So there needs to be something outside of the device itself that can alert the owner. Maybe it's just to specific a problem unfortunately.

PS. You could use Tasker app (or other automation app) on your phone to set up an alert when the tablet losses connection, if you use your phone as a hotspot, I think.

Question Ads/Sponsored Content in Google Feed on Pixel Phone ? Any way to block it ?

Hi there, it's been a long time since i used my last Pixel (it was 2XL),
what i notice right away after using my P7Pro for few days is that Google Feed on this phone is showing a lot of ads/sponsored content,
i used host based adblock along with adguard private DNS on this phone, same setup like my other phone (Aquos R6)
but to my surprise, while it managed to block the ads/sponsored contents on my Aquos, it failed to do so on my Pixel.
Do google actually do same thing with apple on macOS ? setting up certain IP/URL/Connection in OS level, bypassing our DNS/VPN/Host ?
Because i dont remember ever seeing thia much of an ads in my Google Feed. And, as comparison, i dont see the same ads from my Aquos which signed into same google account.
Do you have any idea how to reduce it ? or block it ?
And, no, choosing "Show less" or "Block this ads" by pressing ... button on the Feed doesn't work.

I don't use Google Feeds it's an open door for some pubs
I prefer to use Flym which manages my RSS feeds and I don't have ads.
I also use AdAway and the Magisk Systemless Hosts-Unified module.
Adguard app, no adds unless you missed some filters/updates. Works great on Facebook too.
As others mentioned, you need a way to block/filter traffic on your entire device. There are apps that use a VPN to filter traffic without root, though there is always the root method of editing your hosts file which has been around for a good while which will always also work.
There is also one other option which is to use a DNS server which some companies provide as a paid service, the benefit there is you can choose to put the filter in your modem to have it filter down to all of the devices on your network, though personally I would never go for this option as iot is far too easy to block something you didn't want to, and a hassle to unblock it.
I installed a Play Store App, DNS66, and this seems to block ADs system wide including YouTube Music Ads - now it plays like a regular music player without the garbage ads every other song.
Thank you for all replies,
as mentioned i already using two adblock methods, root based and DNS based, and for other apps, the ads all gone, system widely,
only Google Discover still showing it,
but it SOLVED now, after turning off Ads Personalisation in My Ads setting in Google app, somehow all the ads now gone. Probably there's cache somewhere in my system which prevent the adblock to work 100% on Discover.
