Question custom recovery - Motorola Moto G100 / Edge S

Hi guys
I have an edge s with a stock g100 firmware
can someone refer me to a guide that will help me install custom recovery?
right now I don't seem to have any recovery menu

In fact you can find all information here:
https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/nio/
and here:
https://lineageosroms.com/nio/
Though:
You have to unlock your bootloader first with the unlock key from the Motorola website: https://accounts.motorola.com/ssoauth/login?TARGET=https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/cc/cas/sso/redirect/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-b
To unlock:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot devices
fastboot oem unlock UNLOCK_KEY
Important:
Start point should be latest G100 firmware
Afterwards You have to flash additional partitions (see information in first two links)
Afterwards You have to copy a to be (see information in first two links)
To flash recovery:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot devices
fastboot flash boot_a <recovery.img>
fastboot flash boot_b <recovery.img>
Where <recovery.img> is the name of the recovery you want to flash.
I would suggest the LOS recovery:
https://download.lineageos.org/nio
Then you can reboot into LOS recovery, format data and install LOS.
This is as I remember it when I did the first install.
Hope it helps... ;-)

thanks for answering, I really appreciate it
I've tried that guid on the LOS website but it threw my phone into a boot look after which I had no choice but to factory reset my device
I want to avoid factory resetting my device if I can
I've found another guide and would really appreciate if you could give me your opinion on it
Will the "fastboot format userdata" command factory reset my device?

Yes, it will reset your device.
And...why do you need custom recovery?
If you don't have custom ROM to install, custom recovery is useless.
If you want to install LOS then you need custom recovery for LOS, not TWRP.

May be my first post about installation experience will help also.
In fact I had the same experience; after installing custom recovery and LOS I had a bootloop.
Though, as you can boot in fastboot, it is not neccessary to factory reset; you can still do whatever you want... ;-)
Some new installation experiences
Hi there, I don't know how first installation of Lineage (and probably other Android tastes) went, though I had some issues I would like to share for people trying to install another OS then factory setup in the future. I bought a new fresh...

I think I may have softbricked my TF300T trying to flash to KatKiss 6.0

Hi all,
I'm a total noob here. Somehow I managed to unlock and root my ASUS TF300T successfully, even though the instructions I was referring to were sketchy. Unfortunately I started the process before finding the detailed instructions here on how to flash the ROM. So it looks like I misinterpreted the sketchy instructions and hosed up the process. I managed to get the Katkiss zip file on the internal SD of the tablet, but when I tried to install it, it failed.
I now know where I went wrong so I'm not sure if it's fixable now: Rather than wipe while in TWRP, I wiped from the main bootloader screen (RCK, Android, WIPE DATA). Idiotic noob mistake which I realize now, but too late.
Currently when I attempt to boot up using the power + down volume, my screen shows:
Code:
Key driver not found.. booting OS
Android cardhu-user bootloader <1.00 e> released by "US-epad-10.6.1.27.5-20130902" A03
If I select RCK, I can get to TWRP, but it can't find a way to push the stock ROM file from ASUS from my PC back to the tablet. I tried using ADB push, but I get an error that it's not a valid command.
I can see the tablet in Device manager if I connect using the USB, but when I use the ADB devices command, nothing is returned - no error message, no device information.
Any thoughts on how whether it's possible to get back to the stock ROM? It shows
Code:
The Device is Unlocked.
on the ASUS splash screen but always boots to TWRP if I do not hold the down-volume button when starting up. I'm not sure if it's still rooted.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
I would like to advise you to get back on stock rom without any further experiments.
First of all the USB driver must be installed on your PC.
-Download “Minimal ADB and Fastboot”.
-Make a folder C:/Fastboot and extract it there and install it. Download the latest firmware V10.6.1.27.5 fitting to your device from the ASUS official website and unzip it twice.
-Copy the .blob file into the folder C:/Fastboot.
-Start “Minimal ADB and Fastboot” and put in "fastboot devices". The device should appear as "xxx device".
Now type in step by step (wait after every step!):
fastboot erase system
fastboot erase recovery
Fastboot erase user data
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase misc
fastboot erase cache.
After that put in "fastboot -i 0x0B05 flash system blob" without " " .
Now it takes a while "sending..." appears then "write..." and the load status will be shown.
If loading is finished put in "fastboot -i 0x0B05 reboot". It takes a while to start into a clean JB 4.2.2!
After that you are ready to flash Kang TWRP 2.8.7.2 again and make a clean install of a custom rom of your choice by taking care exactly of the instruction given by Timduru in each post #1 of each CR.
Thank you for your reply, ebonit. It looks like I have an older version of TWRP currently installed: v2.5.0.0. Is that a problem? If I'm going to flash TWRP again, should I definitely overwrite the current install with Kang TWRP 2.8.7.2?
Thanks again. I may have additional questions because I'm totally new to this and there's so much information out there. I appreciate your patience!

For all MM 6.0.1 and N 7.1.0 versions you need Kang TWRP 2.8.7.2. That's mandatory as seen in each post #1.
If you get back on stock rom, you don't have any custom recovery remaining. There is nothing to overwrite. You must flash Kang TWRP anyway. After that you may flash any custom rom of your choice as clean install.
Thank you so much for your help. It looks like I'm back to the stock ROM. I will try flashing Katkiss later when I can give it my full attention and am less likely to make stupid errors!

I cannot stress this enough. MAKE AN NVFLASH BACKUP ASAP!!!! I bricked my device 2-3 years ago and had I made an NVFlash backup I could have recovered it. Unfortunately I did not have a backup and so I just had the tablet sit on my shelf until a few days ago when I finally got a replacement motherboard and swapped the bricked one out. Again MAKE AN NVFLASH BACKUP. You can use the flatline utility described in one of the threads in this device's forum here on XDA.

Ebonit, this is what I need to know, all underlined.
Can anyone give me complete step by step instructions on how to install MM 6.01 on my TF300t. It's so slow it's annoying and unusable. I am a newbie and don't understand how to flash this and flash that and do several other steps... more detailed instructions for each step below would be so helpful. I would be more than happy to make a payment donation for more detailed help.. thanks! Cindy

The first time or everytime you have an issue when dirty flashing (Especially when changing android versions):
do a full wipe , if you have issues make sure that you format /data (format is different than wipe)
Warning: formatting will remove what is stored in your internal storage, so store the rom /gapps/supersu zips onto an external storage (microSD, SD card..) or make sure you know how to push them back through adb.
Change /data filesystem to f2fs
Then everytime (even when "dirty flashing") do the following steps:
Flash the rom
Flash the SuperSU zip
Flash gapps
Wipe cache/dalvik
Reboot
What do you want? Every information you need is written in your post. Any further questions you may have will be find an answer somewhere in the forum.
Kang TWRP is the most important tool. It will do the job. Do you have it?
If not, look here http://forum.xda-developers.com/transformer-tf300t/development/recovery-twrp-t3046479. There is the install instruction as well.
If yes, then start into recovery and and realize step by step what you found in post #1 and is written down by yourself in your post itself.

I haven't tested fastboot but it should work. TWRP works 100%
Thank you very much, you are a life saver!!
I was stuck in a TWRP loop.
I tried flashing through TWRP but it didn't work but the fastboot method worked like a charm!
My phone is running again.
Thank you very much.

For some reason on my unlocked nokia 1 it started to ask password after flash and boot and gkeyboard always crashes on boot. So, I thought flashing fresh userdata might help.

I wrote in the instructions...
If you get a password just enter a random one, then it will ask you to wipe the device, click ok and it will reboot to recovery and then wipe userdata and boot fine.
just make sure you flash the recovery.bin and not twrp before you wipe

Same happened to me. I solved it by a hard reset via the stock recovery.
Make sure you flash the recovery.bin like Sooti said.
Wiping through twrp doesn't work.
Nice, working twrp for Nokia 1.
I buyed this phone today. Waiting for customs
A little warning.
It looks like the recovery.bin I took from another nokia 1 device doesn't match the checksum check which causes a failed during ota updates, please only flash this rom if you soft bricked your device.
If anyone can get me TA-1060 stock recovery image that should solve it. for now you can't update the phone until a fix is found
I have Nokia Ta 1066. Will this rom work on mine? Also I read somewhere Ta 1060 is single sim variant. What about the second sim?
Has anyone with TA 1066 tried it?
Thanks. Both methods work fine. Don't ask how I found out.....
Can you share how you managed to backup stock recovery file. Maybe after all the steps above we can flash our own device recovery to make ota work again...

Sir, is that possible to get a stock rom of TA 1056 ?
I have searched everywhere but whole thing available over net just left my phone bricked. All i need is a working rom source. Even if that’s a custom rom too to flash via sp flash tool. Thanks in advance

[GUIDE] Rooting the UMIDIGI S5 Pro | Magisk

EDIT: I attached a zip with AIDA64's reports for this phone. One report has Magisk hidden from AIDA64, the other doesn't.
This mostly a copy of _cab13_'s Rooting the UMI F2 post as the same instructions for rooting that phone are how I rooted the S5 Pro. So please give _cab13_ thanks here if this helped you root your phone. I'll take a thanks for removing the orange state warning if I helped you with that
Please be patient when posting questions, I will get back to you as quickly as I can. I just have many responsibilities which take up a great deal of my time.
Rooting the S5 Pro
Disclaimers
This is important, please read thoughtfully.
whatever you do, NEVER EVER use SP Flash Tool in "Format All+Download" mode. This will wipe your IMEI['s]s and some other bad stuff will happen like loss of fingerprint sensor. This cannot be reversed by us.
Once bootloader is unlocked, warranty is considered void. By following this guide, you consent to that happening. Safety net CTS will not pass anymore unless you flash Magisk which hides the unlocked bootloader.
Never re-lock your bootloader while running anything unofficial as the phone will not boot until you unlock again.
And, once again, a lot of bad things can happen like boot loops, if that happens to you, don't freak out! Simply re-flash the stock ROM, redoing the rooting process from the start. It might be time consuming, but that's your safest bet!
More important even, have fun rooting, it's before all a hobby!

Unlocking Bootloader
ATTENTION!! After unlocking the bootloader, all user data in the phone's memory will be lost, so do not forget to throw all the most important things on your computer or flash drive!
1) Activate "Developer options" through Settings > About Phone > Tap Build Number multiple times.
2) Open "Developer options" in Settings > System > Tap Advanced.
Enable "OEM Unlocking" and enter your password to confirm. Enable "USB Debugging" as well.
3) On Windows, download and install Minimal ADB and Fastboot by shimp208
On Linux, use your package manager to install android-tools-adb and android-tools-fastboot
4) Open command prompt (Win + R > type cmd) or a terminal on linux.
5) Plug your phone, accept the prompt about adb and the PC signature.
6) Type adb reboot bootloader to reboot in fastboot mode. Unplug your cable from your phone
and replug it after fastboot is printed at the bottom of the screen.
THESE NEXT TWO STEPS WILL COMPLETELY WIPE YOUR DATA
7) Unlock the bootloader using fastboot flashing unlock and pressing Vol+
8) Unlock the secure partitions using fastboot flashing unlock_critical and pressing Vol+
9) Restart using fastboot reboot
You will now always see "Orange State" at boot; this is completely fine and will only delay your boot by 5 seconds.
Rooting using Magisk patched boot.img
This is "experimental" and is probably overkill, but everyone managed to install Magisk with it.
1) Clean install UMIDIGI_S5Pro_20200702.V3.02 (or the European one) with SPFT by selecting the scatter file, pressing download an rebooting the phone
(Make sure it is in "Download Mode" and not "Format + Download")
2) Patch boot.img by copying it to your device, using Magisk Manager to patch it, and get back the magisk_patched.img in the Download folder back to your PC.
3) Start ADB while booted; run adb reboot bootloader. Alternative is to reboot to recovery and selecting "reboot to bootloader"
4) unlock if not already done with fastboot flashing unlock followed by fastboot flashing unlock_critical
5) In the following code, the vbmeta.img and the recovery.img are the stock files from the ROM you downloaded and extracted.
Code:
fastboot erase boot
fastboot --disable-verity --disable-verification flash boot magisk_patched.img
fastboot --disable-verity --disable-verification flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot --disable-verity --disable-verification flash vbmeta vbmeta.img
fastboot reboot
When rebooting, install Magisk Manager. It will prompt to finalize the installation, you can do so.
Congratulations ! You are now a proud Magisk user ! All credits goes to @topjohnwu he's the real MVP here.
Returning to stock / Resolving issues
The best way to resolve any issue is to return to stock. Here is the method.
1) Download latest stock ROM on UMIDIGI's forums
2) Download SP Flash Tool if you don't have it yet (Windows only)
3) Extract stock ROM in SP Flash Tool directory. Refer to Flash Tool guide if needed.
4) Open SP Flash Tool, Download Tab, "Choose" in Scatter-loading file, select the scatter file in the stock ROM directory.
5) If you want to keep your data, untick "userdata" partition. MAKE SURE FORMAT IS NOT SELECTED!
6) Press Download and connect your device via USB. Reboot the phone or turn it off and everything will be flashed.
7) If you want a full stock experience, I recommend relocking the bootloader so that SafetyNet will pass. Get into fastboot mode by using adb reboot bootloader and use fastboot flashing lock_critical followed by fastboot flashing lock. This will wipe your data once more.
You should be good to go.
ONE LAST THING
Get rid of your orange state warning.
Download the attached zip file and extract.
Put your phone into fastboot and:
Code:
fastboot erase lk
fastboot erase lk2
fastboot flash lk lk_patched.img
fastboot flash lk2 lk_patched.img
fastboot reboot
No more orange state warning! Reflash the stock lk before unrooting, though.
ATTACHED LK FILE IS FOR UMIDIGI S5 Pro ONLY.
Thank you for re-posting this as an option to root the S5. I did get stuck on flashing the recovery. I have tried a few times and every time it just flashes orange , restarts and loads normally. I have verified root.

No luck for me finding a custom recovery (twrp or anything else.)
If you have any exp with them, see if you can make the F2's (found in the F2 root thread) work. It SHOULD only need a minumum of tweaking, just to account for the (afaik) slight soc differences. i'm not gonna hold my breath. there seems to be a void when it comes to enthusiasm for this phone. by my serial no, i have the 4832nd phone manufactured. compared to serials ranging from 22000- 189000 for my other umis (f1play, s3pro, f2, power3)
I think I'll try making TWRP soon for it.
The F2 TWRP would not be usable this easily, it's easier to start fresh.
If anyone wants to try, download the sources for the F2 TWRP on my GitHub, then you need to extract the stock kernel and replace the F2's with the S5pro's

hello folks,
This message is not about rooting s5 but rather about downgrading. I posted on the umidigi forum but have not received an answer. So the problem is the new OTA update that they pushed out yesterday. After update I lost 4G connectivity and i am unable to restore it. I want to roll back to the previous update. They have the roms available on the forum and I downloaded one but what I am not sure is can I use SP flash tool to just download the older ROM version on top of the new one?
I see lots of manuals on how to update but how do I safely downgrade?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Do a "download only" flash of the "super", " vbmeta_system", and "vbmeta_vendor" partitions only (uncheck all other partitions) from the previous ROM. That should do it.

What precisely stuck you?
There is a new update firmware please make a rooting tutorial on youtube.,
Somebody made a custom TWRP and posted it on here. So if that'll help anyone out and get them to make a tutorial video, that be great. 'Cause I'm reading this over and over again, and I think I can do it, but I'm being very hesitant about it. And it's getting me all frustrated. I had it on "Flash Mode". And when I continued typing it out, it didn't go through and that had me on a raging panic attack. Luckily, it didn't mess up. But now I'm more hesitant. Please make a quick tutorial, doesn't even have to be perfect...

I am able to get FastBoot Mode on my screen (through step 6). I plug the phone back in per directions & I hear the Windows device connected chime.
I type: fastboot flashing unlock in the same cmd window
and I get "<waiting for any device>" in the cmd window and it hangs.
Every few seconds I hear the Windows device disconnected noise, but no device connect chime. This lasts indefinitely.
I repeated step 7 several times with variations with the Vol+ button: pressing first, holding down while pressing enter in cmd window, pushing afterward, holding down afterward, etc. Same results as described above.
Any help available? Should I not unplug my phone from the PC? The F2 directions did not require that.
thanks!

I need help urgently. Thanks!

I don't think you're providing enough info. "I tried to flash the newest factory image" doesn't tell useful people what you did. I'm not useful, anyway.
I wouldn't use TWRP on the 4a. I'm using LOS recovery. You can follow the instructions (read the whole thing first) here: https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/sunfish/install
That should allow you to do a clean install of LOS19.
Thank you for giving advice. I followed exactly your recommended web-site (Install LineageOS on sunfish, Temporarily booting a custom recovery using fastboot). From what I understand the first step is to install a recovery which in my case was sunfish_twrp3.6.1-11.img . I did not work. I also tried an older twrp.img. "fastboot flash boot twrp.img" did not work. I read and read, learned about 2 slots, without a deep understanding. Then I tried " fastboot flash boot_a_twrp.img". It seemed to work. But when I reboot into recovery it is stuck at the screen of teamwin (see attachment).
I thought to give up and do a factory reset. But there I got this: Failed to write to partition Not Found. What can I do now? Is there a way to do a factory reset to slot_b ?
If you try to help me please remember that I don't have enough knowledge to understand abbreviations.

if it goes into bootloader head over to the android flash tool and give that a try,,https://source.android.com/setup/contribute/flash
To hammered58 Thank you for this suggestion reg. android flash tool. This seems very complicated and I don' t understand some terms. I am a NOOB.
In my Pixel 4a the slot a is somehow obstructed. Can't I use slot b to do a factory reset?

Its not complicated at all,, just put you phone in fastboot, which I know you have done before , go here (https://flash.android.com) and follow the on screen prompts, select any factory image and start.
Dear hammered58, I am so thankful to you! Thank you for encouraging me to use the Android Flash Tool. I was skeptical. To undo the pop-up blocker in Chrome was complicated for me. After some failures because I was not patient enough I finally succeeded.

Good to know it worked for you

Need help restoring my pixel 5

Good morning all I need some help unbricking my pixel 5. I have exhausted all possible avenues that I'm aware of to restore my phone out of bootloop. At the time I messed it up I was attempting to use twrp. In an attempt to fix the phone I tried flashing the system, and boot to no avail repeatedly getting the error "boot.img missing command-line or os version" as well as using the flash all from the stock firmware file. The current active slot is b and the a/b partition thing is new to me so I'm sure somewhere along the way I missed something. Any help is greatly appreciated .
Could you try this fastboot command and see if it works?
fastboot --set-active=a
I did try that however I'm not sure i was doing it correctly is it typed the way you typed it out?
Reboot the phone into the bootloader, look up how to do that if you don't know how, and then manually flash a rom or use the Android Flash Tool. The latter option is recommended if you are a novice.
I wouldn't say I'm novice lol but more out of the game too long either way thank you for your assistance I will try that as soon as I get a chance and report back
UPDATE your advice worked and I was able to reboot properly thank you in a side note is it impossible at this time to install twrp on a pixel 5?

Yes. The Pixel series, as with most A/B devices, do not have a bespoke recovery partition. The recovery kernel is compressed into the boot image. TWRP does not support compression in this way so it cannot be used as a replacement for the stock recovery. The only effective way to use TWRP is to live boot the image, use TWRP to do whatever you need to do, without installing it to /boot.
BTW the next time you need to restore your phone you can use the Android Flash Tool.
Ok thank you for the explanation as I stated before I am new to the a/b partitioning way of android life so I have alot to learn
I used twrp in the past( on no A/B devices) but would recommend learning fastboot/adb. First step: always make sure USB debugging is enabled after every flash. This will make it so you can fix a lot of mistakes and recover your device. It's the first thing I do after every boot on a new install.
Here's the commands to flash stock to both slots. NOTE: this is for android 13. 12 and before will be a little different. Bootloader, radio and rom names should be exact to file, this is just for example.
fastboot --slot=all flash bootloader bootloader.img
fastboot reboot bootlaoder
fastboot --slot=all flash radio radio.img
fastboot reboot bootlaoder
fastboot --slot=a --skip-reboot update stock-image.zip
fastboot reboot bootlaoder
fastboot --slot=b --skip-reboot update stock-image.zip
fastboot -w
fastboot reboot
One final note: I put slot a first but I always start with the active slot(it's in the bootloader screen). If you want the android 12 instructions, let me know but it's not much different, you just use the stock recovery.
