I want to update my android car unit but i dont know where to start.
I am afraid that i will install the wrong file and that my system doenst work correctly like before.

If you don´t have any misbehavior on this quite old unit, keep it as is as long it works.
It doesn´t make sense to upgrade it to any other Android version. The latest what would work on your unit would be a 6.1, but this is not even better than the 5.1.1 which is already installed.
Keep in mind, that the unit is now 6 years old and nowadays we are talking about 6 or 8 core units with at least 4-8GB ROM and 32-128GB RAM. Yours comes around with 1GB ROM, which does not allow to run modern apps smooth.
In the meantime, you can think about buying a new unit with much more CPU power if you really want to upgrade your car. You should have a look into the FYT Android Head Units, reading and searching for a good one.

All units seem to have the same radio application installed, but since I can't root my Xtrons Oreo unit, I have no idea what radio App it actually uses.
Unfortunately searching the Google Play store, for "Radio" apps, its very difficult to find any radio apps which actually control an AM / FM radio.
Its probably a custom App.
Can you post the APK somewhere, so it can be decompiled ??

Let's bump this thread since I also have an older KLD head unit which I'd like to update. Mine runs on Android 6 and I'd like to know if an upgrade to a newer version is easily done. Also I'd like to know if I lose all button settings (on head unit and steering wheel) if I update the MCU.

Your unit is running Android 6.0.1.
There is no way to just use an Android 9 or 10 firmware to update your unit.
May be look into https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/mtcd-e-android-10-upgrade-using-official-free-tools.4123933/
This is the way you need to go... really nothing else is recommended.
