Best way to protect/ensure longer lasting phone and battery with Android? - General Questions and Answers

Just bought a Galaxy 21 FE edition (whatever that means..) and since the phone is fresh and new, along with the charger, I was curious as to what are some of the best ways to preserve things like battery life, charge ports, cables for the charger https://9apps.ooo/, just general care that people do that may go over the top to protect and keep their phone running in top shape for longer, thanks

Don't use it.

well, simple. i got a couple of rules :
1. always charge it in ultra/maximum power saving mode. charges the fastest, it does not heats up at all
1b. dont play games or use anything battery strenuous while charging.
2. use a magnetic cable with a magnetic port. the magnetic port closes the usb type c port from my phone, thus no dust can set in the port. trust me, i had removed quite a bit of dust from some of my previous phones.
3. keep the phone internal storage as light as ever. dont fill it with junk, use the microsd card for that.
3+ original battery and counting. still holds for 2 days. my oldest device, a Transformer EEE Prime (11 years old) still holds a charge and can get through a day.

funny that they ve been reports that not using the device actually kills the battery as well

Correct: Each battery automatically discharges itself over the time continuously by a certain percentage ( ~10% per month ). This process can be decelerated by storing the battery (the phone) in the refrigerator.

Stephanuscoontz said:
1. continuously charge it in ultra/greatest power saving mode. charges the quickest, it doesn't warms up by any means
1b. dont mess around or use anything battery exhausting while at the same time charging.
2. utilize an attractive link with an attractive port. the attractive port shuts the usb type c port from my telephone, in this way no residue can set in the port. trust me, I had eliminated a lot of residue from a portion of my past telephones.
3. keep the telephone inward capacity as light as could be expected. dont fill it with garbage, utilize the microsd card for that.
3+ unique battery and then some. still holds for 2 days. my most seasoned gadget, a Transformer EEE Prime (11 years of age) actually holds a charge and can get past daily.

[Q] Trusted AA power bank?

I'm not sure what the general opinion here is on thread necromancy vs posting something there are already threads on, I'm looking for a good power bank that won't break my wallet- or my devices! Also, thanks for that checkbox warning, I almost posted this in general > accessories! (Where all the other threads I found with this kind of subject were, but... oh well. )
I'm looking at the Lumsing 5X right now... (Google it, I can't post links yet. 11000mAh, $26, 5 USB ports at the different ratings) it's the cheapest one I've found that's actually in a "top _" list when googling for power banks... but still, I'm worried about getting ripped off on recycled batteries ( or a charger filled with bags of sand!), and I'm trying to look into AA chargers, but... well, they're really hard to search for and don't seem to provide any specifications!
Plus a AA charger would be great since I could get an 8-pack of Imedions and use the extra batteries for my other stuff, or a quick battery swap, and easier replacement... Batteries do wear out over time, after all.
But my god is it a pain in the ass trying to find them, let alone ones that have a 1-2 amp charging capacity. or even seeing which ones bothered to include a power regulating board at all! I already got a Rayovac one from walmart when I got overexcited seeing it and made an impulse buy... only rated for 500 mAh, according to the casing upon opening the box. I'll be returning that...
It almost feels like my best bet, if I really want a AA based power brick that bad ( I don't) is to order the regulating circuit and put it together myself.
So, does anyone happen to already have a good AA bank and could tell me what they use? After all, the power brick I linked is the same price as the Imedon batteries alone... I would prefer to avoid paying more than 30 or so for the brick, 40 for the AA one + batteries.
Perhaps the one mentioned, but not by name, in this post?:

I'm using a 4cell AA powerpack, I use Uniross Hybrio 2,200mAh cells.
Modified it to support fast charge & it work very well & cost me $15 all in, plus recharge cells can be easily & cheaply replaced making it a long term cheap servicable solution and also standard AA cells can be loaded if no main power available ...

I got the Lumising. Thanks for all the help, everyone that replied; I REALLY appreciate it.
I'll report back when it gets here and say if it's poop-tier or not.
Finally drained the lumising.
It powered:
3 recharges of my Samsung Google Nexus (1750 battery) from 15%, being accidentially left on overnight once
1 recharge from red of my 3DS XL (1750) while playing Pokemon X, on the most power intensive settings.
1 recharge of my Nook 1st Edition (1250) from 15%, while reading
I did have some problems with the pack turning itself off while charging my Nook, and the Nook not registering that it's being charged, but that device does have a badly damaged USB port, so I'll let that slide even though I don't have problems with the AC plug as long as I'm careful about the device end of the USB cable.
All in all, I got approxomately 7000 mAh of charge, plus powering the devices' battery usage during the time spent charging. Not bad, when you consider that a good portion of the energy also disappears into the conversion process from the 3.1v lithium battery to the 5v standard USB ports, and then back from the USB standard to the 3.1v lithium batteries inside the devices.
The pack itself takes bloody ages to charge though, and didn't come with it's own charger. But that's to be expected, I suppose. It can only draw 1-1.5a of current while charging, according to the ratings on the brick, so no taking advantage of the full speed of a 2.1a USB wall adapter, if you have one. The short owner's manual that came with it is engrish-y, but understandable, and there are some minor discrepancies in the information stated on the Amazon page, the package, the manual, and the device itself.
For example, it seems to just turn itself off when it has a single flashing light and won't output any charge, but the manual explicitly states that a single flashing light means 10% charge, and that the remaining battery can still be used at that point. Besides that, though, the display from 4 lights to 1 seemed to accurately represent how much power it still had available in comparison to how much I had already used from it. As accurately as it can with only 4 lights, anyway.
An undocumented feature is that the lights will also start staying solid at the same 25% thresholds during charging.
Cosmetically, whatever material the case is made out of attracts fingerprints and skin oils like a high-strength neodymium magnet, and some of the protective plastics are so closely attached they look like they're just part of the case at first, but they mention that in the follow-up email after ordering. All of the edges, including around the on/off button, are a little rough, and the recessed design of said button makes it a bit difficult to press; I have to jab at it with the corner of a fingernail to push it easily; otherwise I'm just kinda pushing on the face of the device while my skin squishes into the shallow hole that the already concave button is in. The pouch is very nice, but it feels like overkill when the device itself is so impossible to keep clean and fancy-looking. Good place to keep all adapters from USB to various other plugs, though.
I suppose that's not bad for just under $27 spent.
Again, thank you all so very much for your assistance in my decision.

[Q] Tips for Non-Removable Battery

Hello all, thanks in advance for any suggestions
I have a Galaxy S5 that I will be taking back to the store since we haven't been able to get root on it yet, fairly satisfied with the phone.
I had an S3 and then a HTC Thunderbolt before that, both with removable batteries.
Removable batteries have been a huge pro for me, I am often very hard on battery using bluetooth and playing media for 12 hours at a time away from charger.
Really other than being a little tall the battery is what is keeping me away from the M8.
What options does a guy have to combat a non replaceable battery? I know the little pocket power cells have come a long way, and I currently always carry a spare battery now so maybe that is a lateral change. Are there some of those that charge very fast?
I tend to keep phones running a LONG time and pass them down to wife/kids and removable battery has always been a big pro to that.

an external battery like you mentioned or a battery case. if you're worried about wearing out the battery, im sure you can replace it manually after 2-3 years by opening up the phone (there's teardowns posted already). I can't speak on either battery option though bc i have a charger at my desk.

The M8 got a very poor repair-ability score from ifixit so a battery swap won't be a simple choice. Thus my being a bit cautious.

Probably no options are needed. I used to carry a spare battery (or two!) for my T-Bolt but found I could live with the S3 and S4 batteries by keeping a spare battery on a charger and swapping batteries around 6 PM each day.
I was VERY nervous about going to the M8 with the non-removable battery but it lasts and lasts and lasts....... I take it off the charger at 7 AM when I get up and have more than 50% when I go to bed, usually around midnight.
I have a car charger, never needed to use it, I have a USB cord plugged into my PC so I can charge while I'm typing this, never do though, it's not needed.
I can't speak to battery life 3 years down the road when cell phone batteries start losing life but in 3 years I suspect this phone will be as obsolete as a rotary dial phone is now and I'll be looking for the latest gee-whiz phone that is cosmic ray powered or ????
Don't worry about the battery, it'll be fine.
FWIW, rooted, TWRP recovery, running BoneStock ROM (thanks, AndyBones!) with power saver turned OFF!

YW, hope it helps. You know what works for one may not work for another, right?
When Samsung and VZW locked down the S4 (and later the S3) I knew I wouldn't be buying another Samsung phone, us flashaholics GOTTA FLASH!
I was in the same boat as you. I almost went with an S5 because of the non-removable battery. Not being able to remove the battery is a stupid, and lazy, design idea. I watched a few videos about the battery and went for it. I have to say its at least 50% better than my TBolt. At the end of the day my TBolt usually was at about 30-45%. Now with the same exact usage patterns the M8 ends at 98%. Yeah I seem to only use 2% over an 8 hour work day. I use it on breaks of course. I plan on buying one of those portable batteries for emergency charging and I've got at least 3 chargers in various places. I used my phone at a family event for about an hour and a half. I watched 3-4 youtube videos ranging from 10-20 minutes each at max quality and did some web browsing and that brought it to 75%. Tethering with the WiFi Router app can suck it down pretty fast though. All in all Im happy with how well the battery holds up. Im sure someone will sell a better battery you can replace down the road with a little disassembly.
Concerns about a non-removable battery are overblown now days. If you're going to carry around extra batteries, you can just as easily carry around an auxiliary battery. The smaller ones are the size of a lipstick and are rated around 3000 mah, enough to double the capacity of nearly any device currently on the market. If that's not enough for you they go all the way up to 12000 before they start getting too large to carry around. By the time the battery actually needs replacing, you will likely have moved on to another phone.

how do you expect a 90% metal phone to have a removable battery? i don't see this as possible. you're gonna get tabs that break off very easily or something else that fails bc you want to take your battery out easily.

External Battery Charger (High Capacity) - Info Needed!

Hey one and all,
Now I know there are already a few threads with some external battery chargers but a few are quite outdated and it's quite a pain looking through them all so I've been a little lazy and started this new thread.
Basically im currently using the ZeroLemon 7500 extended battery, which with my heavy usage lasts 2 days which is fine by me. I am now starting to get bored with my mini brick and would like to downsize to a 3000mAh battery so as to be able to use stock sized cases, but invest in a high capacity external battery charger. Something in the range of 12000mAh or thereabouts.
Ive searched amazon and google and seen countless brands and sizes and some with extra functions like wifi file transfer / wifi hotspot / sdcard reader etc. My main interest is for the charging, optional extras are just a bonus. Ive had my fair share of fakes from china / hong kong which although super cheap do tend to lack staying power.
I want something that will keep its charge, that has a high capacity to enable me to charge a 3000mAh battery 3-4 or more times and that i can charge fully overnight between 12-16 hours.
Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated, I dont want speculation on products that are out there as i have searched loads and read reviews on what i can. I would just like to hear from people who have similar wants and needs to myself that have used certain products and can give any recommendations.
Muchos Gracias in advance :good:

There are no higher capacity stock sized batteries, its usually fake or over rated. If it exists, Samsung should have produced it already. Better get a power bank to extend your usage.

That's pretty good. Only need it to give a few charges anyway. Does it hold charge properly too? So say if you didn't use it for a week and then used it to charge your phone, does it still have the same charge left on it?

You mistitled the thread. It's external battery pack, power pack, etc. Not charger. Battery packs do charge the phone but "external battery charger" mostly refers to those wall-chargers on which you put the battery to charge directly out of the phone.

Again ... I appreciate your input and willingness to make a point however if you had read what the guy put, regardless of my thread title, he was talking about extended stock size batteries, whereas the title is still pretty accurate for what I want .... An "external" pack to "charge" the "battery". And secondly the title I feel is pretty relevant, but even if it wasn't all you need to do is read my post to understand exactly what i wanted.
Please don't feel the need to take time out of your day to say I did something wrong when in fact you have done exactly the same as the first guy and countless other people by just not reading.
Thank you.
P.s. external battery charger as a description does not restrict itself to just wall chargers at all. External could be referring to a battery charger that can be taken outside its usual confines of somewhere like a house or building and used externally / outside where there is no access to a socket.
Thanks again.

I have a 10000 mAh EasyAcc. Purchased from Amazon, 28 euros.
It is quite slim (similar size as S4, double the thickness) and not very heavy.
I have already used it a couple of times and I am very happy with it. I can charge 2 phones at once, and the charging seems similar like from a normal power cord (got from 10 to 50 in about 30mins).

To be honest, power bank is pretty handy at times but please note that it takes time to charge your phone thus you need to carry your phone with the powerbank on the move which will be even heavier than your zerolemon battery alone. :good:
I've been using the PowerGen 9000mAh since August last year. It is a good size to carry in your pocket.
It has dual USB outputs plus an attached Micro USB cable that shares the 2 amp output. I like the dual output because I can charge it fast with a 2 amp port that will charge my phone a good 60% in an hour or so, or leave it on the .6 amp port over night and only have the battery pack drop 25%, or charge 2 or even 3 devices at the same time. I really like that it has an attached cable.
I can get a good 3 full charges of my S4 from it.
I mainly use it when traveling. If I am not going to be using it for a while, I discharge it to about 50% and it will stay there for months at a time. This is good practice for any LiPo battery not being used. They basically last forever at that charge level.
I also carry a spare OEM battery with me all the time, which is why I don't carry the battery pack often.

Ah, sorry about that. I was thinking about the internal battery.
Anyways, I'm using a Yoobao 7800MAh Power Bank. Its quite well known in the Asia region (like in the PH), can charge my S4 2-3 times, and quite handy (not that heavy).

Samsung wireless charging battery case

So for the s7 edge I opted to get the mophie battery case because neither was water resistant and the mophie charged faster and gave more protection. With the Note 7 the mophie one isnt out yet, but the samsung one does have water resistance now. With 3100 mah i think itll be enough to get some good screen on time. It does come halfway charged so i recommend charging it before use. It works as simple as putting it on and turning it on.
I purchased this on amazon with prime shipping because the samsung website is so backed up they couldnt even give me a date when they might send it.
First up is the packaging. Its nothing special just the normal samsung packaging we've grown accustomed to.

Overall this will do its job but dont expect very much protection as the front is totally exposed. The charging is very slow. It does make the phone both heavier and thicker as is to be expected and makes 1 handed use harder but its a phablet so who cares. I do reccomend this case, but it is a tad expensive. On the other hand though you have to pay to play. Let me know what ya'll think. Will you get one?

Congrats man... Can you please let us know how does the battery lasts? From what i i know it does say battery is 3100mAh but on the back its also written that usable is a lot less than 3100. Anyhow let us know how much total time you could get without plugging it back in.
Also can you confirm does the backpack charges wirelessly or no.
From what I read this only outputs at 1.0a which is gonna be reaaaally slow compared to the standard 2.0a or fast charge. Does it show any specs on the box anywhere?
The backpack itself does not charge wirelessly, only charges the phone wirelessly.

About 3 hrs to full from 16 percent.. idk if it would even make it to full if you are using it but there you go.

Yeah at one point I was just cruising Facebook and I kept getting notifications about the device charging too slow. And this was while on wifi with the display at about 50%
Alright, so update. The charger doesnt charge fast we all get that. But it does work well enough that i started today at 500am and it is now 624pm with what i would consider pretty heavy usage. Probably a good 5 hrs screen on time and my phone is at 61 percent with the charger totally depleted, i started the charger at about 80 percent battery. I didnt browse the internet too much i was playing a game called dokkan battles pretty much the whole time with screen at about 25 percent brightness because the room i work in is dark. Just some figures for you guys i will keep updating as info is necessary.
As far as the power bricks go they are nice. And significantly faster, but i like not having to carry them around or plug them in, just one button and im charging.
I think for less than half the price with more capacity and 1.8a output, I would rather have this. It isn't waterproof and no access to spen though.

That could be legit
the samsung backpack charges the phone from 0 to roughly 40% - just tested it with my completely drained note 7 - charging....did not use while charging......turned phone on - battery level was 41% on the phone for about 30 seconds, then dropped to 40%.....
backpack was completely drained at the end of this.
i agree with the OP that it is MUCH easier to have this on the back of the phone rather than lugging around a power bank and cord. however, the backpack battery case is really expensive given the mAH it provides.....
i bought two of them b/c i'm on the phone all day talking to clients from my car.....my two cents is that the cost is worth the convenience, but most others will likely disagree......
cheers.

I'm just curious, if you're in your car, why can't you just get a fast charger for your car and charge it while you're in the car?

Cords
Cords.....hate having to plug snd unplug. Also in in and out of my car all day. This way I have one backpack on my phone while the other one is connected to my fast charger in my car....
My Samsung backpack charger took the phone from 20% to full with 1 dot left. I changed wireless charging settings to slow charge only. Used it a few times while charging for light stuff. Gets a little warm while charging. I'm pretty happy with it. No cables and has pass through charging if you need it. Makes it twice as heavy though. I recommend it.

My first pros and cons of the OP 6

So I got the device today, set it up, rooted, and I thought I would share a couple of thoughts about the device.
First, Always On Display (AOD) was there initially, but the day one system update removed it, leaving only the option to have the screen wake up when you pick up the phone or a notification arrives, I wonder why remove a feature on day 1....
There is no way to show battery percentage in the status bar.
Navigation bar is always white even when using a dark / black app, looks really bad.
A lot of settings have been moved around, and generally the settings app does not feel like stock, the Razer phone managed to add extra options while still feeling and looking stock like, I would not call Oxygen OS stock like.
Adaptive brightness is all over the place and feels like a beta product.
I really really wish it had wireless charging.
I will keep this post updated as I find more things worth noting.
On the positive side.
Fingerprint and face unlock are incredibly fast.
Phone feels really smooth and fast.
I really like they include the advanced reboot option in dev settings.
Camera looks really promising, tho I only tested so much for now.
Let me know if you have any questions.
Battery life is awesome for me.
I jusdt got my oneplus 6 64 gig mirror black variant today. Charged it upto 98% and started playing around with it. The UI is familiar coming from a 3t but the lack of hardware navigation keys is a learning curve for me. Anyways what I could notice immediately is how good the battery life on active usage is. I've been watching videos on youtube and Amazon Prime and also some Facebook and so far managed to drain the battery to 66 percent with almost 4 hours of screen time. My 3t could only manage around 5.5 hours of screen time with the same sort of usage. This is just mind blowing. And all this was on 4g lte the whole time.. Thinking of rooting and unlocking the bootloader to get magisk working but I guess I'll just wait for the official twrp so that I can take a nandroid backup before doing anything else.
I agree with all of this. I feel the same way.
I Set the Phone up, then it went off and now it's in a boot loop, screen shows noisy green lines sometimes. Full wipe doesn't solve the problem and the support is not in the office now.
I'm really fed up.

You and 99% of this forum. Why include a glass back with no purpose other than to look fancy and break from the other 9 phones OnePlus has put out?
I read in another one of the threads that they are going to be adding the battery percentage toggle for the status bar in the next update.

Makes sense, easy software fix, but seems really like they rushed the device to market before finishing the software
For AOD, I believe they removed it to be able to test further and ensure there is no screen burn-in (something along these lines) and will re-add it in a future update (assuming testing goes well).

Was just about to say this
If you've seen op r&d you know how meticulous they can be
If anything can cause an issue they'll remove it and test it

No, really, not 99%.
It's just a gimmick. Is the 2 seconds needed to plug a USB cable in to your phone such a great hardship that you'd rather wait 3-4 hours charging, instead of 1 hour needed with Dash Charge (or whatever OnePlus have decided to call it now)?
Really?

we found the 1% lol. But honestly, I really do miss this feature. Sure, dash change is a game changer. But the ease at night of night having to fumble for a cable is nice. Or while at work just to drop it on a pad. It would cost them next to nothing to put a coil in the phone to do this. Those who only use dash can be happy, and wireless charger addicts will be happy. Just a mistake...
For me the phone is decent, the vibration motor is a little weak IMO (coming from a S8). It is fast and the screen is ok. I do miss the S8 screen a bit though. Camera is great IMO. I like it better than the S8 in most cases. My battery life hasn't been great but I think a widget or something was causing the drain. VoLTE seems to drain the battery fast. Just initial thoughts. An upgraded 2k screen, wireless charging and using the ear piece speaker as a dual speaker would have made this the perfect smartphone of 2018. But it is growing on me.

Bro, I've seen you all over the forum spouting nothing but dislike and disappointment and advertising the next big thing by Xiaomi. I believe your exact words were "A Bit Underwhelmed".
We have different lifestyles and choices. Some of us work at a desk, using their phone often, it would be nice to just drop the phone next to whatever you're doing and have it charge. Not everybody has access to a cable manager or wants to keep a USB cable sitting out next to their work area for when they need a fast charge.
Or like this gentleman said, maybe some of us don't want to fumble around at home or at night for the charger.
We have our own opinions.
Just an observation coming from 5t the new op6 charging cable feels lot more thicker

Signal penetrates glass much easier than metal, so your signal should be better with this device as opposed to other metal devices.

^^ this. The whole wireless charging is the dumbest crap. 10 min on dash charge is the equivalent of 45 to an hour on wireless charging dock. I mean if your port went bad I could understand it but how the hell often does that happen? And if you're able to connect a wireless charger to an outlet, you can plug in your dash charger and be done soon much faster.
Dumbest complaint/feature

Wireless charging means less stress on the battery meaning it loses capacity more slowly, great for overnight charging, plus you don't wear out the charging port. Really wish it had a metal back as a single drop may mean serious damage. Going to have to use a case for the first time ever, sigh

plus let's not forget that if you have a case on your phone wireless charging is soooo useless because you'd have to take ur phone out the case each time
I have never found wireless charging useful. Maybe in a car, but my car can't do that so I don't care.
has anyone found the swipe fingerprint notifications "I loved that feature, surprised they removed it"
