Back to a Pixel 7 Pro after being away on a OnePlus 9 Pro, and everything Pixel/Nexus before it.
I'm glad to be back, but I notice one feature that the OnePlus had is that it showed both the PIN AND the fingerprint reader at the same time.
I haven't found an option for that yet on stock. Now if the PIN pad is up, I lose the option to use the fingerprint reader?
Thoughts anyone?
I get that, and there are times like after boot where a PIN may be required, but this is one where the OnePlus experience was better.
Don't take away the fingerprint reader option every time you show the PIN pad.
If you use both pin + fingerprint like I do, then every time you reboot the phone, and other random times as security checks, the phone will require your pin # to unlock, without even an option to use the fingerprint reader. Other times it comes up by default to use your fingerprint reader, but you can just swipe up and it'll bring up the pin pad if you prefer.
There are many good security reasons to not allow the fingerprint reader after rebooting the phone but the most important is that the pin is more secure than the fingerprint, and both are more secure than face unlock. Furthermore, if you bring up the power menu and choose "Lockdown", that makes it so that the next unlock will require a pin no matter what.
This is all stock Android behavior.

Why? Just swipe up on the lockscreen to bring up the pin entry.

That's nice. The button then is in the form of drag up. Who really cares about the specifics?

The swipe up to show pin entry exists today. I don't think there's any need for a button.
I guess I'm alone in this problem.
I've used smart lock for years, so I'm used to just swiping up to unlock. The phone before this was the aforementioned OnePlus 9 Pro, which displayed the fingerprint reader along with the PIN pad on the same screen, so I could use either one. The phone before that was Pixel 3 XL, which of course had the dedicated fingerprint reader on the back. Now with this phone, I swipe up, sometimes its showing me the PIN pad instead of unlocking, so then I have to swipe from the side to go back to get back to the fingerprint reader and unlocking becomes three steps instead of one or two. It looks like I just need to retrain myself to tap the fingerprint reader, because even if its unlocked, that will open the screen, so I just need to break my swipe habit for a FP tap habit.

So I bought a few cheap nfc tags from China and used one for the Smart Unlock. Since mxp doesn't have fingerprint sensor, I guess having a Skip alike thing would be the next best thing. Very easy to setup, just go to Security menu, Smart Unlock (you must have pin or pattern lock), add Trusted Devices, pick NFC then put the tag behind the phone. Give it a name and thats it. The only hassle with this unlocking method is you have to wake up the phone then only it will read the tag. Skip has a magnet built in that wakes up the phone automatically. Oh and another not so good thing is you have to lock the phone using the power button in order for the unlock to work. Whenever I lock using Nova's Screen Lock or Greenify's Hibernate and Lock, it just didn't work.
Update on diy skip. Now I no longer needs to press the power button to lock/unlock the phone. With root access, use Tasker and Secure Settings plugin to emulate power button press when display is off (run command - input keyevent 26). Then use Nova launcher's screen lock shortcut gesture (double tap, swipe up/down etc) to complete the process. I have a small magnet taped to the nfc tag, so when I slowly swipe from the side, the magnet wakes up the screen and then nfc takes over to unlock.

Motorola has a product called Skip which utilize the NFC chip to bypass the lockscreen. If you have been using some Moto phones, you should know that most of them has a magnetic sensor that is used for the docking (older Moto phones have dock accessories). The dock has a tiny magnet that when the phone detects it, it automatically turns the phone into a desk clock or navigation mode when attached to a car dock if I'm not mistaken. It seems that Moto maintains this sensor in newer phones, it is located at the back and in MXP case, somewhere in the center. If you have Skip, you attach it to your belt so when you pull the phone out from your pocket, all you need is a swipe on Skip and the phone is unlocked. I believe what happens is the phone detects the magnet, wakes up the phone (still locked) and then it detects the NFC tag inside Skip to unlock.
So I bought some NFC tags, got small magnet from my busted laptop hard disk, taped them together and attach it to my belt. If you don't have the magnet it is still possible to tap on the NFC tag to unlock but you have to enable Moto Display. When you pull your phone out, you'll see the clock, swipe down to get to the lockscreen (pin/pattern/password lock) and then tap on the tag to unlock.

Anyone else with experiences ? I was able to register the nfc tag but unlocking on the pattern lock screen didnt work. There was a sound when putting the nfc tag behind the device (so i guess somehow the nfc reader worked) but the unlock failed.
Maybe its only working if i have some special services switched on?

Usually the power button. Sometimes maybe because of the auto lock after some seconds (i set it to 30). I am not sure what you mean with shortcut app.

Our phone has a default app that detects the nfc chip, it's called Tags. I believe this app made the sound, if you're at the home screen (unlocked) and place the tag at the back of the phone you'll hear a sound and a popup message asking what to do even if you already registered the tag for smart unlock. I disabled this app to get rid of the sound and notification.
What I mean with the shortcut app is something like double tap to sleep or lock the phone. Greenify and Nova launcher app also has a shortcut to lock the screen. If you use this method to lock the phone, smart unlock won't work.

if my phone detects a nearby nfc, even if it is registered with smart lock, there is a black screen only saying:
new tag detected
empty tag
(or similiar, i have a german version). There is no menu, no arrows nothing. Only those two text fields. I cannot find an app called Tags (via autostarts tool or settings|apps list).

Can someone enlighten me why this is useful? I mean, if you have Tasker and root you can use Secure Settings to unlock by WLAN or location (in LP that is), and if you are going to literally stick the key on the back of the device, why even set a lock at all? I would understand if the tag was in your wallet or your jacket or on your desk, but literally on the device?
Who said about sticking the key on the back of the device?
Oh, the magnet is just to wake up the screen. I must have read over that too quickly.
I want to apologize. I was wrong about not working my nfc tags. I simply missed that pretty little detail: nearing the nfc tag while in lock screen. I always tried to unlock while beeing in the screen before the unlock screen.
So, everything is fine now. I am using a stylish nfc ring beeing very happy with it.
Update, 2.2.2016: No, not everything is fine. I came across a bug or intended feature. The lock functionality is disabled after some time not using the phone, according to this:
this is a lollipop behavior.
According to this, nephiel made a workaround for at least MM.
Here is the bug report for this issue.
Does anyone else use the nfc ring or another nfc tag for unlocking?
Regards.
Ok, so it's been awhile since I've used a Samsung Device and my dad just got one. After setting it up and everything I've noticed that I was only able to use the finger scanner to unlock the phone on first attempt (after unlock with the finger scanner at lock screen -> hitting the power button / lock screen it I am unable to unlock it with the finger scanner again, the only option is the swipe the screen to unlock). This is so frustrating because lets say I am at home and I have guests over and they randomly just access my phone like that. I browsed through the settings and it's getting to the point where I don't know how to set this finger scanner unlock process up, which should be cake. I did some more research and I've read that it's something to do with the smart lock? But i've noticed that those aren't even enable so it couldn't have been that.
PS: simply put in short,
- Unable to use the finger scanner to unlock the device after second try (as it's not an option)
- After using finger scanner to unlock the device at lock screen it goes back to swipe to unlock
Main focus: Can I set it up so that it's able to always use the finger scanner to unlock the device like other phones such as, LGs, Nexus, Sonys, iPhones, etc.?
Thanks for whoever's reading this
Edit: Nvm I found the solution, not sure why they made it so complicated this should've standard -___-

Stock rom with lolipop 5.1.1 I fixed though. It turned out that all I had to do was go into the security and go to secured lock time and set it to instant lock rather than at display. I don't know why they don't just combine the two so that it's easier to approach.

Great then.
Hi all,
I've always used the application "Screen off and lock" to quickly turn off my Z5 without pressing the side lock button. My button works fine I just find this to be quicker.
However now with marshmallow after I lock the phone using the application, when I wake it up again it won't unlock with my fingerprint, it forces me to unlock the phone with with my pin. It vibrates as if my fingerprint is accepted, but it won't unlock beyond the pin screen.
If I lock the phone normally by pressing the side lock button it will unlock with my fingerprint like normal.
I've tried multiple applications that do the same thing and have made sure to give them the lock permission but I keep running into the same pin screen issue.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?
Don't use the fingerprint icon, it locks your phone so it requires pin to unlock, you can slide to unlock as previously, or just use the power button to lock screen, then you can unlock with the fingerprint sensor with exception of first boot where you are forced to use pin first time unlock.
Don't quite understand maybe what you are trying to explain, to wake phone you have to push the button, IMO it is faster to just hold your thumb there for a second longer for unlock. Also not sure this is a bug

So when I use this application
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.katecca.screenofflock&hl=en
to lock my Z5, when I wake it back up it won't unlock with my fingerprint it keeps asking for my pin.
But when I lock it with the lock button then wake it up it accepts my fingerprint instantly.

Sorry now I am with you, same issue here. Although it would seem the app is not compatible with the 6.0 fingerprint framework, because it doesn't work on pretty much any phone from what I can tell
same here.. i guess it's a bug and we need to wait for the next update that includes Stamina Mode perhaps?
Also for me it's a bug. With lock screen program the fingerprint sensor does not unlock the phone. The fingerprint sensor works only with using a button lock.
I face the same issue with Tasker and Nova Launcher. Worked fine on 5.1.1.
me too
+1 for me too

There's a ticket in Google Android about this, it's the same in Nexus phones. You have workarounds if rooted.
all screen lock apps are not compatible with Marshmallow yet - it requires to use the back up pin/pattern after using the fingerprint . Though, if you uninstall the app - the fingerprint will work without using the pin anymore T_T
I use gravitybox shortcut to sleep the phone. It work.
Is there any way to use the fingerprint scanner to wake the screen without having to enter a PIN?
Yes, it's like that by default. Just put your finger on the scanner and it will unlock while waking from sleep.

That's the default setting.
You shouldn't need the PIN if the screen has simply timed out.

How do I set it up so that I don't need to enter a PIN every time I wake the screen?
As it is, when I enter/enroll my fingerprint, I have to assign a PIN as well. Then, every time I wake the screen, it also asks me for a PIN.
I'd like to be able to pick up the phone in the morning, touch the fingerprint sensor and unlock the phone without having to also enter a PIN.
It looks like there is timeout. If you just turn off and then use fingerprint, so phone will ask pin. But if phone went to sleep, you do not have to use pin, just finger.
My device only asks for the PIN after a reboot, otherwise the fingerprint will suffice.
Just like mine.
Yeaaaaaaaaah wtf? Did you set your phone to automatically power off and power on on a certain schedule? Because literally every Android phone that uses fingerprint unlock only requires pin or pass if phone was rebooted and only that once until you reboot again

In Settings / Fingerprint ID / Fingerprint Management (you will need your PIN here) is Unlock Screen set to On (blue with the circle on the right)?
Do you mean "wake" as in when you have put it to sleep by a short press on the power button, or by letting the screen timeout. Done that way, the default will unlock the phone by fingerprint - if you have set fingerprint as an option and enrolled at least one (and use that one)!
edit: I have just tried an app called Gravity Lock so that if I put my phone face down it would lock the screen. The problem with it is that it meant I had to use the PIN to unlock the phone, as the fingerprint was prevented by the app. I've uninstalled it (had to do that from with in the app) and the phone is back to unlocking by fingerprint.
Or do you mean "Start" which is when you have to reboot the phone having long pressed on the power button, and then chosen "Power Off" followed by "Power off". Can't think why you'd do that. That way, it takes appreciably longer to start and you get the Huawei logo and animations. After this, you'll need your PIN.

It seems the problem was using Nova's gesture double-tap to sleep the screen. When I disabled that, it works as it should.
Hi guys. As the title says, it would be great to not have to use the power button at all to unlock and lock the device again and again.
Now obviously to unlock it, all i have to do is touch the fingerprint scanner.
And to lock it again i have tried apps from store and though those do the job and lock the device but then phone doesn't unlock by fingerprint scanner and it just wakes up and asks for pin to unlock.

You must use finger sensor to unlock and circle to lock. No other way. Huawei don't have double click lock/unlock. Bad thing. I see to another phone.
What if you try lock widget (chinese version & I'm not sure if it includes in international or European versions)
Use fingerprint quick action
Lock widgets require admin permission to work and if you lock with widget then fingerprint scanner takes you to pin code screen instead of unlocking the device.
Sent from my MHA-L29 using Tapatalk
Juat tested with Nova Prime and configured the double tap to turn off the screen.
But that also required admin access and after turning off screen that way, fingerprint scanner brings me to pincode screen again instead of completely unlocking the device.

Double tap Mate 9 not have. Bad. Lock widget not have international version. Only circle, but you must double clock on this quick tool to lock. Mate 9 not have user friendly features like my old G2, G4 or Z11. Mate 9 have only big price. ,)
try using this software from play store. it work very well on my mate 9
Using screen lock app.
Clicking on the icon turns off the screen and lock the phone just fine.
But then when you use fingerprint to unlock, it'll take you to this screen instead.

I saw this "floating dock" on my set too, and it's come with stock ROM.
Some detail can find in this website:
http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/140...-tricks-take-charge-of-your-mate-9-p9-honor-8
I use Nova Launcher gestures together with Anywhere Launcher to allow me to turn off and lock my screen using a downward swipe from the upper left corner of the screen in any app. It's very convenient.
I'm on C636B188 and that includes the screen lock widget, so you can use that.
Originally, I thought I would prefer it to the floating dock, but after getting used to the dock I like it more because you can access it from anywhere, not just the home screen.
The "Custom Navigation Bar" app has that functionality.
You can add an extra button on the navbar to put the phone to sleep instantly and unlock your device with fingerprint sensor.
I don't know if any other app of such kind.
At least I have this Screen Lock widget directly on my phone. Fingerprint opens the lock just fine after locking it with this widget.
You can use a Nova gesture to lock the screen, but don't use Nova's Screen Lock action in the first tab. Instead, swipe to the last tab on the right ("Shortcuts"), and look for Screen Lock there.
Unfortunately, though, this no longer seems to work on Oreo. Whenever, I try to select the Screen Lock shortcut, I get a message saying 'App isn't installed.' I have a feeling it has something to do with the fact that they replaced the Floating Dock with the Navigation Dock.
i just update the stock firmware, yes, the latest stock 188 rom has built in widgt for turn off the screen. it is very handy.
