I was messing around with my captivate and i was noticing it wasnt getting same amount of service that my old iphone 3g did. When i was in an area where service was quite sketchy , i would put it down and get two or three bars. When I picked it up in my hands it would drop for one bar or no service.
So the question is do we have to buy cases for these phones since service drops so much by having direct contact with the phone ?
no, cases are not necessary for reception.
If you are completely losing signal when its in your hands, you need to go to att and get a new sim card. If that doesnt work, have them replace your phone.
Note: if you are holding the phone by the bottom and losing bars but your signal is not dropping, this is perfectly normal. All phones do this to an extent since the antenna is located at the bottom. If you completely lose signal or drop calls because of it, you have a serious problem.
what i have noticed thats not just 3g reception its wifi too which is weird, i pick it up in my hand i lose a bar of wifi when i am in the same room as the cablemodem/router that doesnt seem right.
Usually when i pick up the phone it drops the three bars i hold it in my left hand usually. Another issue is i bought this phone thru amazon since it was 30 bucks cheaper for upgrade price, will att still allow for trade in or do i have to send back to amazon ?
I too have noticed this with my phone. Never really noticed until this iPhone 4 shiz came out. Guessing its par for the course.
areas where i used to get full bars i am not getting full anymore when i pick up the phone, it also happens with wifi which is really problematic.
Sitting in same room as router and cable modem and dropping below full wifi connection, and if i walk out of the room drops to one bar of wifi guess i will have to call att tomorrow and return my phone
Kind of off topic how thorougly do they check thier phones am i going to have to find an rom that has all the att bloatware stuff on it ?
This is a sad day really liked this phone , but appears i am going to have to return it , since this issue is a known issue so getting a new phone wont make these problems go away.

wifi doesnt drop for me... thats really strange. in any case if you are only losing about 2 bars its normal and will happen with most phones. If you lose signal completly then its abnormal and ur phone/hardware is faulty.

An good example would be when i went into apple store which has 3g microcell tower in the store to hide the antennae problem with iphone 4 , i dont get full service and the iphones get full no matter how hard you grip them.
Going to give both samsung and att a call tomorrow morning to see what i can do i really dont think its fair to have to eat the upgrade and restock fee when phone cant perform normal functions

If you got the phone from amazon and are returning it, then it is free to return with no restocking fee. At least thats what they told me. All you gotta do is call the number for returns so u can get a return shipping label from them. Did you ask if you could exchange for another captivate at a local At&t Warranty Center?
I will be calling att and samsung tomorrow when i wake up to see what they have to say. As far as returning it to att, if its a known issue then an replacement phone will have the same possible issues.
So i did an little experiment to test 3g and wifi. I walked across the room, which has the modem and router, and stood by the door. got no 3g service in my hand, and the wifi dropped from full bars to just 1 bar of wifi in the same room.
I don't know what you guys are talking about. I can touch the phone any which way and the bar fluctuates by a single bar, if even that. I get more fluctuation walking around in my house then I do holding it. The only time I've ever noticed a significant drop in reception has been literally covering the phone front and back with both hands. Maybe you guys are just in poor reception areas. Before you completely discount the phone and send it back, instead of relying on the bars, look at the actual db signal in the settings.
I have looked at those i get an big fat zero. the other issue i have is my wifi goes from full to 1 bar by just moving to other side of the room thats not good at all.
I have been to areas of my town where i know there is full 3g service, and i get maybe two or three bars. i was thinking maybe an case would mask that particular issue since i am not directly touching the phone. The fact that i really like this phone i would just do the case thing if that were a solution

I will admit the area where i live doesn't have the best reception in the world, but when i place the phone on an table or sofa, i get -105 dbm and 4 asu. once i pick it up drops to 0 dbm and 0 asu quite odd.
Just to make sure, I removed my phone from it's case, and plastered my hands all over it. With a solid 3 bars, I touched sides, with two fingers all the way to a two handed deathgrip. Not only did I not get a degradation of bars, at one point I got a bar increase! I palmed the back, front, cradled it my hands, held it to my body. I didn't get any change in bars.
Maybe it's the band of cell phone signal in your area. I know that either the 1900mhz or 850mhz is better than the other in terms of penetrating power, so if your signal is going over the weaker one, that may be the issue.
I am just going to give samsung a call , when i actually use phone i am not touching the back of the phone. I have taken it into area where usually you should get full service and i dont get it if i hold it in my hand.
I also did an comparison with my old 3g iphone and the 3g was getting two to three more bars...
The other major issue is my wifi signal dropping from full to one bar in the same room of the router that shouldnt be happening
well its like i said, this signal issue that you few are having isnt that wide spread. go get a replacement sim, if that doesnt work then simply have ur carrier replace your phone. you should be within the 30 day trial period anyway... dont bother talking directly with samsung, getting a phone replacement from att would be quicker.
well the only issue with returning the phone i dindt buy it directly from att , got it thru amazon so returning to get a new one may be a bit problematic i think.
The iPhone's issue is different - it has an external antenna, and one finger in the wrong place rendered no signal - one finger bridging the gap between antennas - creating an electrical conductive circuit.
The Captivate (and all other phones) have internal antennas covered with plastic (the phone's case) - so the antenna is already covered.
Apple tried to deflect criticism by talking about "The grip of death" killing signal on other phones. While this is true, it is not what plagues the iphone - although it can. All phones will show signal drop if you wrap your hand (or some other signal blocking material) around the phone.
The Problem with trying to measure the signal drop, is that signal bars are not very accurate - you need to be in the phone menus where it shows you actual signal strength in DB - I don't think you will get this for WiFi though. Then of course there are all kinds of external interference issues - Microwave ovens, cordless phones, etc.
So, unless you measure this stuff in a controlled environment, like consumer reports did, where you can control the transmitter and all eliminate all external influences, then most observations are not including all environmental factors.
My phone works great, regardless of what the bars say.
well i have seen my phones service go from -105 dbm 4 asu to nothing when i picked up the phone. and then i would get the nice blue circle with line thru it.
I did an speed test also with phone while holding it and when putting it on an table , the times i would actually get no bars on my phone while holding i would get 1/3 the dl speed of when it was sitting on a table.
I will have to wait till tues to get an replacement phone and hopefully i wont have the same issues

I've had several occasions when it feels like the network just stops doing its thing when it should still be active.
For instance, when updating my apps, it will update most, and then get stuck at 'downloading' one of the last few apps forever (keep in mind these are tiny downloads we're talking about).
Another example would be Facebook. There are instances when it seems like the network isn't activated or doesn't remain active when I try to view an image. It would get stuck at the loading stage and never get out of it unless I reload.
I'm starting to think this goes beyond a simple application bug and probably is firmware related? Anyone else have a similar issue?
Well I've had similar issues with my One X (AT&T). I definitely have the WiFi issue that some folks are talking about. I've had WiFi just kick off and say "not in range" when I am standing right next to my router.
With regard to the network, I have had multiple times (at least 5-6) where out of the blue I get no signal of any kind and have seen it last as long as 5 minutes, even when I moved around (at one point I walked for 5 blocks). This was in a large metropolitan area where I have never had a signal problem. My friend was with me and had no issues at that time on his Iphone 4 with AT&T.
I went to Best Buy yesterday and was lucky enough to have it do the same thing while they were looking at it. I'll probably return it for an exchange just in case it's an issue with this specific phone.
I am having the same issues as well - although it rarely happens. I will likely exchange it for another.

I seem to be suffering from all of the various bugs. Wifi, network signals, email push. When you add in the things that are apparently there by design, but might as well be bugs (multitasking issue; links to youtube and appstore opening up in browser windows instead of the app), I'm pretty dissatisfied with my overall experience.
Hardware and screen absolutely fantastic. Software... way buggy.

Same here for all of the above. Love the phone 95% of the time, but it does random things (like drop network connection) 5% of the time that drives me nuts.
Has anyone ever seen it switch to 3G? Mine will drop to no signal with 4G still displayed when I know there is plenty of 3G coverage in the area...
honestly i thought the facebook one was just a facebook problem... because i've had that with every android phone i've ever owned across two carriers (T-Mobile and AT&T). it is annoying though.

Nope. Happens to me in all programs using data. I also had the same issue with Facebook on past android phones, but that isnt the problem this time.
So is it safe to say its most likely a software/firmware problem? I got my phone through Amazon so exchanging it is more of a nuisance.

I am pretty sure this is a firmware issue. Remember, this is the first ICS HTC phone. There were bound to be bugs.
I don't think this is faulty hardware given how many people are having issues and given how my similar issues have seemingly disappeared. I believe it is a combination of software just AT&T's network. I don't think their network is quite as ready as it should be for this phone. There aren't many LTE devices on AT&T but the more there are the more issues there's bound to be unless they move at a slower pace and work them out. I mean it's just a logical trade off between having a network that grows very steadily vs. one that spreads rapidly to capture more attention and users. They want to roll out LTE to as many cities as possible, but they could simply be doing it cheaply (edit- there is NOTHING cheap about it, but let's say "more cheaply" than a slow and steady approach). From what I've read on the interwebs there they don't have complete coverage in certain areas, they skip a few towers So overtime, I would expect this issue to get better through software updates for the phone and just general network infrastructure reinforcement. Also keep in mind they don't have volume testing, only spot testing. Download the AT&T app that lets you report when you don't have good signal. It helps them.

Also worth a mention that AT&T took an interesting path with their "Circuit Switch Fall Back" (CSFB) system and I'm fairly certain it's a bit more complex than it sounds...I would be willing to wager several firmware/radio updates will come out in the future to help improve how this works. If I was a betting man, I would also bet that getting dropped from their network would be a result of this in many cases. Of course bad signal is a very common and simple reason, but I also think it would be foolish to assume CSFB would just work without any glitches. Although I do like the idea vs. what Sprint is doing (which is I'm sure not their preferred solution, but I guess buyer beware when it comes to these big companies investing in major infrastructure matters).

ROFL - I loaded up the Mark the Spot app and realized it said at the bottom "Don't use this app while driving." ... Not sure I've seen that before on an app, but what a nice responsible thing to add. I'm sure they of course mean don't use it while moving fast because your position won't get accurately marked...But eh it's nice to think they meant it for safety.
I have not done anything software wise to my phone, its still a factory rom and radio for ATT... now my issue is I'm struggling all the time with reception with this phone. I don't remember it being this bad when I first got it and now its just becoming a huge annoyance.
I'll have phone calls breaking up with a display showing 3-4 bars of service and also having troubles sending txt messages quite often.
I'm in an area that is labeled as HPSA coverage area and my "voice" coverage map for my area is not bad at all... for example where I work is listed as "BEST" coverage and if I walk outside I'll have 2 maybe 3 bars of service.
There is nothing visibly wrong with my antenna/sim cover but should I attempt to replace it and see if that could be causing the problem?
There is nothing out there on the web for improving reception on a Inspire 4G phone and there is now way to shut off the HPSA and revert to 3G, but at the same time I really should have to since my whole state is covered with blue for HPSA coverage.
Any input on things that I can try would be great.

hpsa is basically 3g just optimized packet transmission. You can change your phone to run on edge network (which is why i personally do because then i can get a ton more battery life) Also it doesnt matter what your area is 'claimed' to be for coverage, there are a ton of outside factors that influence your signal. What you can do is take the bottom cover off and clean the gold contacts on the phone itself with alcohol and using something metal, lightly scrape the cover-side contacts to shine up the metal (but not removing the material itself)
Well aware of all the things you mentioned, as well as I've tried cleaning the contacts multiple times. Used an eraser on the cover side to polish the contacts and got no improvement with signal. I also can not find any way to shut off HPSA or 3G on this phone... and I've read that with the AT&T Inspire it's not possible. I'd love to switch to Edge when at work because as you said it would extend battery life immensely.
But I guess the real issue is I never had these problems before with any of my phones or this one at first, granted I have some dead spots which I'm well aware of and accept since I do live in the hilly north east corner but to have this phone degrade with signal over the time I've had it just seems a bit odd.
I was just wondering if anyone else has experienced signal loss with an Inspire 4G over the life of the phone without having any physical damage done to it. As well as having much less signal strength in comparison to other phone models.
I'm contemplating getting a new phone but I want to ensure that whatever I get would have better reception. I'm close to my 2yr resign IIRC and when I do find out that date I will probably replace this.
Its just the whole antenna on the Inspire seems to be lacking and very small in my mind, and placed very badly.

fyi the antenna is supposed to be small as it has to be designed to receive certain frequency. antenna length has to do with what signal it is using. bigger is not better
theres an app on market called 2g/3g toggle. it will put a button on your screen to take u to that menu screen instantly

Also that app only brings me to the network settings in the phone, not to this menu.
I selected "GSM Only" for now to see what it does.

correct, gsm only will keep you on edge network. if you want your regular hspa+ setting just change it back to wcdma preferred

This is a matter of interest to me as well. I've been looking at some videos for "fixing" the reception of other phone models by finding the gold contacts and extending the "antenna" by attaching a piece of aluminum foil to the antenna points. Now with the Inspire, the contact points are in the battery cover, but you'd have to open the unit itself to see anything more than that. I'm thinking that some reception problems may be due to worn contacts. I'd be interested in what kind of substance would be appropriate for "restoring" the contacts. Also I'd be interested if someone *has* opened up the unit and "extended" the antenna with something like aluminum foil.
From what I could gather the cell antenna is actually on the bottom cover for the SIM an SD cards. All I did was use an eraser on the contacts to clean them up and yes I did try to lay down foil to extend the antenna but from what I have read regarding radio's and such the antenna size and shape is specific to the signal its trying to pick up, so that could either work great or fail completely when you try to extend it. It did not help for my situation at all.
Lately the phone will not send txt's with one bar of HPSA or just on Edge which makes no sense to me and also I'm quite often only getting one bar unless I can see a tower right next to me which is a bit sad and I do not remember having this issue before.
Also changing the preferred network did not prevent it from using or wanting to go to HPSA while I'm at work. It would operate the same as before. Its impossible to get this phone to stick on regular 3g which I feel I have better coverage of that network in my area.
I'm contemplating rooting the phone and trying some different radio's on it to see if that will help me at all.
I never had this many signal issues with my 3Gs and I'm contemplating going back to that phone until I can upgrade again since this is just so aggravating... More so than having to have the same txt sounds as everyone else with an iPhone.
I think it us just AT&T having problems on their side. Some days I gave great reception, and others it struggles to maintain one bar all day. Its getting very annoying for me, and I probably won't be with them for much longer...Verizon looks much better right now.
I've read reports on the Internet of many users having issues with the Samsung Galaxy S3 such as small cracks appearing in the casing of the phone out of no where. Another thing is the weak signal strength this phone is known for. All the reports I could find were outdated and I really want to like this phone and purchase it.
I'd like to know if anyone knows if these problems have been fixed by Samsung.

Signal has been top notch on mine.....Just as good as my wife's Rezound. Much much better then my GNEX!
Below 40% battery the signal becomes progressively weaker, noticably so, but no issues with calls, mostly manifests itself in data.
Otherwise, though, great signal. As I sit here in the middle of a state park far from anything. I travel a lot, neighborhood of a thousand interstate miles a week, and haven't dropped a call yet.
Device rocks, and haven't noticed any physical deterioration. As a smartphone you can't do any better on the market today in terms of quality, performance or features.
Worth getting the 32 gig model and slapping a 64 gig card in it. Nothing like having nearly 100 gigs of immediately available interactive storage.
4g lte is impressively fast.
one thing to remember is somebody will always have something to gripe about no matter what. that being said the s3 is by far the most solid device i have ever owned!
I've had two different Galaxy S3's on Verizon, and both have horrible data issues. Disconnects from data, and not gaining data back until reboot, slow data speeds when I have it, and signal bars constantly going from 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 to 3 to 2 to 3 to 4 etc....
The second phone has never been rooted or modified, and the first one I tried everything I could think of. So many ROMs, modems, and flashes, and nothing worked. Other Verizon phones nearby work just fine. Just my experience though.

I only got 2 bars where I am at, but looking at my family's other phones, they are about the same in reception (razr droid) . Now my dad who lives out of state, is telling me that when he calls me, it goes straight to voice mail (i dont see any indication that he called) , so this is an issue im trying to figure out, but I have a custom rom and kernal. So hard to say what the issue is for me ( I also got a crack on the screen already from slippage the 2nd day I owned the phone, but its very minimal), happened because I didn't have a case at the time.

The phone otherwise is awesome, Get some good protection for it, it is a must! I carry it in my pocket,but I do feel like if someone bumps up against my thigh that it could break.
I think people are to caught up in the bars. I never look at the bars. If my phone has 4G and I don't drop calls then there is no problems with the radio. I even get 4G in fringe areas where my GNEX did not.
Also, my wife's rezound can say she has 3 bars is a fringe areas but it still takes 10 minutes to
load a webpage.
Bars are a bunch of BS. Usage is what really counts.

First question are you rooted? if not you should get an update from Verizon with a new modem. If so go to the modem link and down the newest modem and flash it via Odin. I flashed mine and it seems to help with the single problem I was having. Also when you look at the bars I was told that if your data is on the bars you see is for your data when it is off the bars you see is for your voice.

I am a bit confused by this advice going around. I am rooted, and unlocked. I checked for root access a few times before posting this, and I can still do everything I could before. I have manually received the OTA update, and don't notice a difference in my root capabilities. Are you saying something was supposed to break once I updated?
Hello, I have pixel 7 pro and I'm experiencing difficulties in cell change, often when i put my phone in my pocket, and then I take it off i'm without signal for many seconds.

Same for me. After the march update is even worse. It take so long to gain back the signal and sometimes I need to reboot the phone or reset the network. Also after the latest update after the boot sometimes it takes 3-5 minutes to get the sim signal..

Now I'm using Vodafone IT. Yesterday I switched to the esim. I will keep the thread updated to see if the esim is better.

Yeah, I only switched from a phisical sim to an esim
In addition to the above, in my case I also hear some strange noises at the beginning of the calls, a kind of "Crack" and sometimes the voice on the other end is choppy, but it is slight and allows me to speak well most of the time.
This does not happen all the time. I am tolerating it for the moment.
I'm experiencing worse reception since the March update. On Verizon.
Yesterday I had to reboot the phone to go from the exclamation mark to LTE.
I'm thinking about doing a wipe/fresh install, hoping that might help.
I ran into this issue with mine while talking with somebody, the phone connection would randomly drop the call... shocking Google hasn't released an update to resolve this issue - it helped forcing me back to a OnePlus 11 device.
Guys, I had this exact issue on my P7P. It was driving me crazy, constantly dropping coverage and taking ages to reconnect, I had both esim and physical sim. I messaged Google support and they said it was a software issue and to wait for a fix. But like most of you I bought this phone months ago so that's not good enough. I eventually got them to do a full replace of my phone under warranty and now I have no more issues. Get them replaced!

What do you mean for "costantly dropping converage", i have this issue sometimes when i put off the phone from my pocket, but i noticed that if i disable wifi when i'm outside, this happens no more.However I have to do more attempts ..

I mean I would take my phone out of my pocket and have two exclamation marks. Or I'd be driving and my music would stop and id have the two exclamation marks. I tried absolutely everything and even moved networks and it never improved. Replaced my phone and haven't had an issue since.

I bought mine new from Amazon but I contacted Google directly. I think warranty is from Google so I would message them and see

Same here in Germany and Vodafone , since March update worse then before.
Since a full wipe and fresh install of the March update, my cell reception on Verizon has been better. Before that I was updating without wiping and my cell reception often gave me the !
I thought I'd add a comment. I'm on TMobile in Louisiana, USA. I believe reception is the best I've seen personally on pixel 7 pro. One of the things that surprised me most is in building where I work, usually no phone signal, but on this one I can surf the Internet,etc. One other thing to note is, I have a friend with a messed up cell phone, for the longest when you talk to him you can hear an echo. On this phone there is no echo when talking to him which is surprising. I thought he had got another phone but one time after disconnecting from my pixel buds or something similar I heard the echo, and asked him; did he get a new phone because I haven't heard the echo in a while. Come to find out he has the same phone and all I could think is that possibly this phone aka clear calling(which I could be mistaken) had literally cleared up the echo.
I live in the country and have never had any issues. 5G is disabled. It's not even available anywhere near where I live. I've never had 5G coverage as far as I know. So again, personally reception has been good. If you look here, on telegram, and on Reddit there are a lot of weird complaints about reception with this phone. My only complaint about it is battery life. Ever since the November update it's sucked. I get through a day easy, but I should be getting through 2 days without charging and still have 30% no problem.
A month ago I charged my phone while working in my shed. I unplugged the phone and left it in a metal enclosure shelf (bad reception). 18 hrs later I came out and the phone had 100% charge still. It is my work iphone XR that is 2 or 3 years old. I couldn't believe it. 0% idle drain in awful reception over 18hrs. The phone may have been connected to wifi, but still. Had I done that with the p7p the battery would have been at 70% due to Google's crappy software in Google plays eevices and/or hardware searching for signal and never stopping. If they wanna use crap hardware they need better software to control the frequency of signal searching to increase battery life. The balance they've chosen between maintaining good connection signal and maintaining battery life is way too far off balance in favor of maintaining good signal. It's ridiculous and is obvious
I don't have a source or poll to refer to, but I would have to guess that device battery life is a top 3 concern of anyone buying a new device.
My first p7p had really bad connectivity. Returned it under warranty and the new one has been perfect ever since
