Is there anyway to restore a Captivate to 100% stock without a USB connection? Ie, load something on to an external sd cards to restore?
I've used ODIN plenty of times, but somehow I've lost my USB connection for anything other than charging the phone (USB Device Not Recognized).
Thanks...
Nope, Odin has to be done via USB, the closest thing out there is Redbend, but ATM people have only put together packages for flashing the kernel, not the whole phone
What about drivers?
Have you tried updating the drivers or installing them?
Crap!
I guess I have to continue trying to get my USB connection to work.
I'm worried that my problem might be hardware on the phone, and without reverting to stock, I won't be able to return it!
Any ideas for the USB problem? I'm using the correct (ODIN) USB driver, installed, uninstalled, re-installed.

sounds like you are having the same USB problem I am on mine (see my post on no USB) BUT...after several weeks w no USB, today I connected the phone to my laptop so I could charge it and VOILA! The phone vibrated and asked me what usb connection did I want to select. Out of the blues, sure I've installed some games and what not but I troubleshot the problem for days several weeks ago and had absolutely no luck. I eventually gave up chalking it up as a bad USB on my phone and being that its rooted I couldnt exchange it. I still think its a defective USB but keep trying on yours and maybe it'll kick in like mine did, I did pull the battery like 10 times...I doubt that did it

Wow, that's weird, but great news for you...congrats!
My situation is a little different, since I have USB on the phone to "Ask on connection" and each and every time I plug in the USB the phone vibrates and makes me select. Doesn't matter WHAT I select. The phone thinks all is well, but any computer I try to attach it to says the device isn't recognized. And I've tried both of the drivers, and have tried each on a clean on install on 'fresh' computers.

Back to the topic in the thread title...
...
Since ODIN from an SD card is a no-go...how about a clockwork restore of a stock phone image?
Thanks...
do you have usb debugging enabled? if not enable that. also instead of ask on connection do mass storage thats how it has always worked for me

Debugging on or off, no difference.
Kies, Media, Storage, PC Internet, Ask, no difference.
But thanks for trying!
Fivebraids,
Try it on another computer and see if the drivers download. Maybe something hosed your drivers. Kies always hoses mine.
Did you download and install the drivers that are on the OP in the Odin one click thread? Odin is *****y about drivers and sometimes they take a couple of tries.
Also, does the USB work when you just charge from a wall outlet? If it does then your phone is fine, it is a driver issue.
If you have a Nanadroid backup of stock ran through ClockworkMod within ROM Manager than the answer is yes, if you didn't create a Nandroid backup then the answer is no.
update: I just reread your OP and if it works with charging from the wall then you definately have a driver issue.
Ok, problem solved!
This no USB problem HAS to be a hardware, since I've tried every possible permutation of drivers, settings, different cables, different computers, etc.
I started this thread hoping that I could somehow restore the phone to stock (removing SRE, SU, etc. so I can return it for a new one) without being able to run ODIN. It appears that isn't possible, but I found a way to do the no-usb restore!
I got a copy of the files created by ROM manager of a stock Captivate. I then used Switfp to FTP these files over Wifi to my non-usb phone. I used Rom manager to 'restore' that set of files. All I had to do then was un-root, and voila...STOCK!
I'm off to AT&T tomorrow to return this second Captivate...hoping three times is a charm!
Thanks to everyone for the patience and assistance!
nice job i probably never would've thought of that
Can you link me where you got that stock rom to flash via Nandroid. I am in the same boat as you are. I can't even get my device into recovery. Tried all steps as you and no go on the usb. POS Cappy #2
I've tried a few other forums but haven't got any replies, I guess since the Galaxy 5 isn't such a popular device. I figured if there's anyone who can help me they will be here though.
I wanted to put CWM on it so I could get a CM7 port on. Unfortunately it's just about impossible for it to get detected on USB. I've installed Kies (and even the generic USB drivers found in the SDK). In 2 days I only got it to connect once, and then I went and bricked it.
The one time it finally connected I ran Odin and tried loading CWM onto it. It still hadn't finished after half an hour so I figured it ended with an error that was never displayed. So I unplugged it and as expected - brick! I can get into download (upgrade/firmware) mode so I think it can be fixed if I can get CWM on it (and just install the CM7 port I had originally intended to put on).
Problem is I cannot get the darn thing to connect! to my computer I've tried two separate PCs, one running Window 7 x64 and another running XP x32. Is there a a certain process of connecting things? I haven't ran across anyone making mention of one.
Has anyone else experienced USB problems like this with Samsung phones? Would it even be possible to flash CWM on after it's been bricked like this? When I boot (normally) all I get is an image showing a phone and a PC with and exclamation error connecting the two. Please help!
Try to look for stock firmware on the forum.xda-developers.com and flash via ODIN. You need to be able to put the phone into download mode, so maybe get an USB jig. That should do the trick. Odin has to recognize your phone. First of all right click on the ODIN executable and select "Run as administrator" on windows. Plug the phone in the DL mode and wait until it appears as active in Odin. Then flash the ROM and pit file. (Don't use ODIN one click). If ODIN does not recognize your phone try a different USB port or reinstall Kies. The Kies trick was which I used and it was able to recognize my phone.
Thanks, martin0176. I can still manage to get the phone into download mode - it's getting recognized by a PC that's the problem.
Could you tell me more about the pit file? I only have an ops file.
Try a different cable. I was having the same problem on the Samsung Continuum and it turned out that the cable was working for power, but not for data.
I have a strange issue with my G2x. A couple of months ago I was trying to sync my music with my phone and the computer wouldn't recognize the phone as a disk drive. At first I chalked it up to the computer I was using at is was old and hadn't been rebuilt in quite a while. I had installed the LG USB drivers already, but just for kicks and grins I installed them again. Still nothing. I decided to rebuild my computer and reinstall the LG USB drivers. Still nothing. The phone charges, but Win 7 doesn't see it.
Fast forward to yesterday. I want to restore my phone to stock so I can get the new BB & stock 2.3.4. I installed the APX driver and when I plug the phone in, I get an error code 10 in Device Manager - the device cannot start. I researched that and found nothing helpful. I tried using another computer that I know used to work with that phone, still nothing. I tried the LG Phone updater - it can't find the phone either. I also tried the KDZ updater - it can't find the phone either (even with the phone in Software Update mode). I also tried several different USB cables.
The phone is rooted and I can change between ROMs with no issues, provided I pull the SD card and copy the ROM to that, or download it directly to the phone.
I think the USB port on the phone is hosed. Any suggestions on how to get the updated BB & 2.3.4 on my phone so I can get a warranty replacement?
[edit] - I am on Windows 7 64 bit.

Do you have USB debugging turned on in Settings, Applications, Development? That may help get connected to the Win7 PC.
Yeah - USB debuggin is on.
I had the same problem a little while ago. The solution for me was to install the drivers throught the updater application available on T-Mobile's website. I'm not sure why directly installing the drivers doesn't work, but that's just how it is for some people, apparently.
---------- Post added at 02:57 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:56 PM ----------
Oh, and turn debugging OFF
Yeah, i would turn off usb debugging, as then you can't get to USB Mass Storage. I would also try uninstalling and reinstalling the LG USB Drivers, and then try it again.
I have tried all manners of the solutions presented. Installing drivers from the LG Update tool, from the LG website, with and without USB debugging, with and without the SD card (saw that somewhere else). The more I work on it, the more I believe the USB port is bad. Thank goodness I can still charge it. The guy at the T-mobile store states I can get a new phone in 3 months. So I think I will just live with it for the time being.
What ROM are you on? I remember having problems with some of the ICS ones.
Kinda shocked no one said did you make sure you have USB set for mass storage? Thats usually the most common thing to miss. If your using ICS I'm gonna take the guess of HFS? Which i know for a fact he posted the update morfic kernel so you can use mass storage. If your not using HFS, then you should try it first and then worry about the USB.
This is ROM independent. I've used pretty much all ROMS for the G2x, most recently Owain's ICS, Weapon and right now HFP - all experience this issue. As stated in the original post, though, it doesn't work with the APX drivers when trying to flash CWM or go back to stock. No matter which ROM, when plugging in to Windows, there is not the distinctive sound that a device has been added.

Check your device manager in the properties (open computer, right click, selct properties, should be the first or second option on the right side, will open in a new window). Open the option all the way at the bottom and you should see something like USB ADB storage device. If its there then you should be able to access it. USB debug and USB mass storage should both be on, try adding "allow mock locations," and if none of the above work, try doing it the old fashioned way. Get the Micro SD adaptor and plug it into the computer that way.
I deleted the original text because I have a few important updates.
As I pointed out in the original text, Odin did not detect it. I don't know why but I decided to try Odin 1.8.5 and it DOES detect it. 3.0.4, 3.0.7, and 3.0.9 do not.
It starts to flash but always gets stuck at "SetUpConnection...".
It isn't a problem with a usb port because I've tried all and the fact it's literally a brand new computer.
It isn't the charger because I've tried 3. But granted they all are the exact same type of charger.
It isn't a problem with Samsung drivers because I've installed two versions and Odin picked up nothing when I uninstalled one to install another.
It detected the Galaxy Victory again after I installed the different Samsung driver but still stuck at "SetUpConnection..."
I do not know if I keep messing up on the download mode combo. I saw before you can enter download mode if you take out the battery, plug the phone into the computer, remove any sd card or sim card, and enter the combo and press up like you would if you actually saw the screen.
I've always been bad at entering download mode, don't know why.
Yes, I know about usb jigs and I actually bought one before I got my new computer but I lost it because it's so small and I literally cleaned my whole room attempting to find it and just can't find it.
I know the usb jig I had did indeed work because it put my Galaxy Tab 3 into download mode so if nothing worked it wasn't because of the usb jig.
There's obviously something that's different between Odin 1.8.5 and the newer Odins to make it recognize on 1.8.5. I actually have flashed with 3.0.4 on my Galaxy Victory before. That's how I got TWRP and it was using my old Acer Aspire One that doesn't work anymore.
I'm running Windows 8.1 and my new laptop is a Tashiba Satellite C55.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Hello colleagues, for 2 or 3 days I've experimented that I don't have a fast charge (and it can take me to charge it like 6 or 7 hours ....) and there is no way that it can recognize the computer, Problem, how do I get it to work ???
I tested several USBs? Yes, in two Windows and a Mac
Have I tried other cables? Yes, 2 official and one no official
I tested it with another terminal? Yes, my partner has another Android and connects on both the USBs and the different cables ....
Have I tested it with other ROMs? Yes, I have tried the Gold Eagle, the LineageOS .... the only thing I can not put a Stock by Odin because neither in Recovery nor in Download mode it recognize the PC .... (and is precisely what I want to do to try to fix the problem)
Only (I think) I would stay to try the Clear Internal Memory but of course, it gives me something to leave it as a brick because it does not connect to any PC ....
To finish saying that Drivers are installed (and that on 2 PCs with Windows 8 and 10 and on a Mac do not recognize me ... it is rare)
Thank you very much in advance and sorry for my English!!
You need latest Samsung USB Drivers, latest Odin3, latest stock firmware (use SamFirm) for your model and optional adb + drivers. Reflash with newest stock and you will see...
About FastCharging... You use orginal cable? And orginal dedicated FastCharger? If yes, must works... I never have problems with FastCharging on NNE5.1 ROM (look my signature).
P.S.
If the PC's not recognize phone how you put ROM's for example from PC to phone? Or is working only on some mode for example in recovery mode MTP option?

Hi, I use AirDroid, just to copy the ROMs into de Phone...but no, I canno't connect it by any form.....I tried in Recovery, Download Mode, changing the differents options in Developer Mode....nothing, there is no way to connect it to my PCs (It charges though..)
About the Fast Charing...yes, everything is original and with another cables neither....
That's weird and I'm pretty sure that with an Odin flash it will fit it but I cannot connect it!! (I tried everything, with differents drivers etc..)

Yes, I hear the "beep" but it appears this message (sorry if is not literally, is Google Translator):
"The USB device is NOT recognized, one of the USB devices linked to this computer has malfunctioned and windows has not recognized it "and I have a recommendation:" reconnect the device. If windows still have not recognized replace it ""
So it is connected, it charges but I canno't use it....in 2 PCs with Windows 8, Windows 10 and in a Mac with Sierra (In MAC it just do nothing..)
Look's like broken USB-port, some pin's or something... That can be also why fastcharging not working, only normal.
I'll keep trying and reading about it...I don't want to expend more money in this phone (I already changed the battery 3 months ago to improve...nothing ). But thank you very much for your answers!!

Because if you changed battery in S6 to new same battery that cannot give you so much... Current batteries do not wear out so fast through charging cycles, for example the battery from 2 years old S6 will hold almost same time as the new one (not half the time as it was in for example iPhone 5 after longer using). If you put battery from S7 Edge then yes, ofcourse... 1000mAh more. I will have orginal one in my S6 in monday, I let people's know how it's working (but i'm sure that's best solution, here can look: https://vordhosbn.com/index.php/blog/tech/galaxy-s6-battery-mod-s7-edge-battery/).
Same issue here

Did you manage to solve this problem.
Having same issue.
What is the status of your phone now.
Your USB port Is faulty or the wiring is coming loose internally. My s6 only charges on a custom ROM because the USB port has s power regulator that is not working and the stock ROM will not let the device charge. But the custom ROM let's it charge just fine. Its not a firmware bug because you have tried multiple Roms. In my opinion it is hardware related. If you want to open your phone I can help you further. But if you don't know how... DO NOT OPEN IT. the screen is glued and you will definitely break things if you don't know how to remove it
