I've been using various password manager apps - particularly either Google or Bitwarden. And...they've worked.
But recently I'm finding certain apps that don't seem to trigger the autofill function - or when they do trigger the popup is displayed for a moment and then disappears. Historically I've used Samsung phones (last was a Note 8) but I'm going away from Samsung and I'm now using Google Pixel 6a if it matters. Now running Android 13.
I'm also seeing changes in the password fields themselves - now I have to press and *hold* the "eye" button to be able to see the entered password. I'm so sick of this obfuscation and pretend security being pushed on users - I'd love to be able to turn this off at a user level if at all possible.
So...any tips for making password entry easier? I'll even take biometric options that can be utilized at a user level. I'm experimenting with some keyboard options that will save frequently used words for non-critical passwords - now I'm fighting (Chroomy) wanting to insert a leading space when it pastes the word.

I've just installed QuickSpell from MobiSystems on my Nexus. When I go into the Language & input section of Settings, and change which spell checker to use, my selection is not "sticky" - the setting reverts to the Android default.
When I make the selection of QuickSpell, I get a verification dialog box - "Attention! This spell checker may be able to collect all the text you type, including personal data like passwords and credit card numbers. It comes from the app QuickSpelll.Use this spell checker?" (doh! isn't that what I just selected?)
I select "OK", of course, then go on to do whatever I was going to do.
When I power off, then power back on later, this setting reverts to the Android default. It does this even if I disable the Dictionary Provider app, which seems to re-enable itself too when rebooted.
Another similar odfity in the Language & inputs settings is the "voice typing" option. This too is not sticky, even if I have all the voice-related apps even if I have all the voice function apps disabled. I'm not sure if any of these are re-enabled by reboot, but I suspect so since I know I have had to disable something(s) off this sort repeatedly.
The only system-level type modsI have is the Nova launcher. I run Lookout Premium for security, but I know that that is not the source of the problem. They quickly replied to my email about this and said that Lookout does not make changes of any kind to any settings. They merely detect what apps do in re: privacy and report on their behavior, letting the user decide whether to uninstall or continue using apps that can/do access potentially private data, include Lookout itself.
Having to re-enable QuickSpell as my default with each reboot is a pain in the fingers (carpal tunnel, you know, from a zillion years as a now-retired software engineer. A new keyboard app is next, since I really hate this one. I'll take suggestions on that too.)

Hi,
I'm currently in the process of turning some Nexus 7 tablets into hand-held scanners that we will use with our SAP ERP system to carry out transactions related to inventory management. I was able to configure most of the settings that I needed to and have successfully locked down the tablets causing them to act directly as kiosk type devices (yah). I have one problem left and that is when I plug the barcode scanner into the tablet (via Micro USB) it automatically disables the on screen keyboard. I'm aware that the system recognizes the scanner as a text input device and that is why it disables the on screen keyboard. I found that I can go into the SettingsLanguage & InputDefault, and change the input method for the Hardware/Physical Keyboard to off which in turn allows me to use both the on screen keyboard and the barcode scanner at the same time (perfect! right?). They need the on screen keyboard to type in their credentials with but also scan material id's, batch number, etc. with the barcode scanner. However the problem it that whenever the scanner is unplugged or the power is turned off the hardware/physical keyboard setting goes back to on thus locking the on screen keyboard from being accessed. Since we will have the tablets locked down, we will need some solution that will automatically turn this physical keyboard value to off whenever the scanner is plugged in as the user will not be able to navigate to the system settings (nor would we want them to). I initially thought that I could edit the code to change the default value for this setting to off however after some extensive research I haven’t found where this setting resides or how to change the value. I also thought if I could use a tasker like program to automatically change the setting to off whenever a physical keyboard is enabled that this would also work but I have not found a program that will allow me to automate in the details that I need. Can anyone please shed some light on this problem? Does anyone know where the value resides in the API/Android OS? It there a program that I could use to automate changing this setting whenever a physical input device (keyboard) is recognized by the system? Has anyone ever heard of someone successfully integrating barcode scanning with any android tablets (specifically SAP)?
Thank you for your time!
Cory
hello,
I assume that you have input fields in your tablet screend and when you click it a keyboard shows up. I am also searching a similar application novadays and found out this app: barcode-scanner-keyboard-for-android. you can find it in the market.
Basicly it installs a replacement keyboard to your tablet and during input if you change your stock keyboard to this, you can both scan barcode then send enter command by keystroke or other commands. when you check the link you will understand what i mean.
enjoy.
I received the phone and have been using it since 2/10. I have the 8/256gb version with the Chinese ROM. The phone is awesome with regards to build quality and so on, but I'm extremely frustrated with the issues that I'm seeing daily. I'm ready to ditch it and return to my Xiaomi Mi Mix.
Notifications are all turned off by default and every app notification must be turned on individually. So every new app needs this manual step.
Notifications, even if enabled correctly, lock screen, does not show up on the lock screen
Various apps do not receive new "data" such as emails until opened. (runs in background, just noticed the application freeze option, and turned that off)
Device Administrator removes MS Outlook as device admin regularly, used to be daily. (required by work)
When plugged into USB-C for Android Auto, must change setting to Transfer files, every time in order to activate Android Auto.
Resets Assistive Voice App nightly, removes Google Assistant and elects none, not even breeno voice.
Depending on task, it switches to use the Breeno Browser instead of Chrome as an intermediary and therefore does not fully like to the next task.
Swiping down on home screen brings up breeno search via breeno browser.
Cannot activate Location Sharing Services even if Location is turned on. I think this has to do w/ limitations on the "Region"
Things that I know does not work
Cannot use 3rd party messaging app. Once 3rd party app is set as default, it switches back to Oppo msgs app due to "security"
Cannot use another Launcher.
Cannot use Google Assistant wake up phrase
Can anyone else confirm if you're also experiencing the above? I'm willing to reset the phone but I think these are "defaults" and not like a choice I made during set-up to cause these issues. Thanks for reading.
The issues you mention are common and are part of the challenge of owning a phone with a Chinese rom. The trade-off is that you own a unique phone with awesome hardware.
I have been able to get all notifications to work though adjusting the notification options as you say, but you can also adjust the power saver and start-up options. You can also lock apps in the recent tasks screen.
You can also uninstall some of the built-in Chinese apps via adb. See the thread in the Find X forum. For example I have uninstalled the browser so it never comes up. I have not uninstalled the launcher as I am ok with the Oppo one.
Issues I have not been able to resolve: changing the default messaging and assistant apps for the long term.
For me, I know the experience of buying a phone with a Chinese rom is never going to be as smooth as a pixel or Samsung in terms of usability, but I love the fact that it is unique and appreciate the hardware (eg charging speed).
Unfortunately, the uniqueness of the phone does not overwhelm these limitations that causes daily resetting of certain defaults for me.
I'm ok w/ not using the Launcher and some other items like google assistant. However, other limitations really create barriers that can't be looked past for me.
I think I'll look for an opportunity to get the Xiaomi Mi 10 pro when possible and sell the Reno Ace.
Since yesterday I have a seemingly unresolvable issue with the Assistant on my Pixel 3. Running Android 10 and been using swedish as the main language for a while (the issue is the same with english btw).
Stuff like setting timers, alarms, making calls, sending texts and playing music have worked fine for a long time.
Right before things went wrong I got an error message about no Google account being associated to the Assistant. I reverted it to my Google account and figured everything was fine.
Then later the Assistant started failing, and in particular to do these tasks:
- set timers
- set alarms
- make calls
- send texts.
When I try these I'm only met with the three grey pulsating dots, and no audio response or text confirmation.
Stuff that it still does, though, are:
- play music via Spotify, Google Play Music
- tell me the weather
The strange thing though is that if I set Assistant to be used without an account, it works! Also if I create a brand new test Google account, it manages those basic tasks that have stopped working on my regular Google account.
So, on Android 10, security update april 5th.
I've been trying to resolve this for 24hrs now, and frustration is growing. I've:
- tried to clear cache/data for the Google app
- inactivated it, rebooted, activated, updated
- tried the beta Google app
- tried various old versions from apkmirror -- from march, earlier in april (at a time when my Assistant was working)
- rebooted in Safe mode -- here it uses the old Assistant interface! and it actually works, but it's the clunky old one!
- checked permissions for the Google app/Clock/Telephone app/Messages -- everything seems to be enabled?
- gone through my settings for my Google account: web and app activity, location history and so on is Enabled. Personlig ads also on.
Another weird thing is that sometimes it actually seems to set a timer, but no confirmation and no notification visible. Also nothing is shown in the Clock app. But a timer beeps after five minutes -- only sometimes! Weird.
Now when I was experimenting with this I tried to set a timer, then opened the Clock app and of course, no timer was running. I then got one of those blue notification fields at the bottom, saying I can use the Assistant to set timers, alarms etc. I touched it and got an Assistant popup saying "It's not possible to reach Google right now" (translated)... Hmmm!
As you can tell, this is very weird. I would appreciate any pointers and suggestions! Thanks in advance
So this is what a typical response looks like:
https://photos.app.goo.gl/PaMGfYxAUSqAoMpZ6
And in Your Activity, it says I set a timer and got a response, but that is is simply untrue!
https://photos.app.goo.gl/VGmrP1G4KU9HE66C8
(I switched to english temporarily to try to illustrate).
So, for every one of those attempts absolutely no resonse except for the pulsating dots was shown in Assistant! :/
So strange.
I zeroed my phone completely again, and set it up with my regular Google account but WITHOUT copying apps and settings. Assistant STILL WON'T DO BASIC TASKS LIKE TIMERS.
I zeroed it again and instead made a brand new Google account: Assistant immediately performs those basic tasks.
I really need some help here, please.
OK, so I went back and disabled all the data & privacy settings in Assistant, and now it can set a timer. But beyond that it's quite useless as it can't get access to make calls or do texts etc. So I gradually enabled setting by setting, and I've concluded that the "Web & App Activity" toggle breaks my Assistant somehow. It doesn't matter if I check or uncheck the "Include Chrome history..." or "Include voice and audio recordings" boxes, if the main toggle is on my Assistant hits some kind of wall with timers, texts and calls. Beyond this I can't understand what I can do to influence this?!
I was just forced (phone broke) to upgrade from my Note 10+ and the timing was such I took advantage of getting the S22 Ultra. I am liking the device so far, but it seems there is no way to use Google's SmartLock feature for autofilling passwords with the Gboard keyboard outside of Chrome. I normally use Keypass for my offline keychains but like the convenience of google, but now Samsung is forcing me to use their crap system for password management and it seems like I can't switch to Google for things like apps like I used to in the past. Is this expected behavior and is there any way to change it? I've done a bunch of digging and everyone historically has pointed to changing the auto fill settings but there is no alternative options for SmartLock in the Samsung pass settings on the device that I have been able to find.
Thanks!

Go to Settings --> General Management --> Passwords and Autofill
There should be two sections there, one for passwords, and one for autofill services.
Press and hold on the name, Samsung Pass, for 1 or 2 secs. When you release, it will go to a selection screen where you can choose Google Autofill Service.
Hope this helps, took me a while to figure it out.

You are my hero! It is completely unintuitive to get to this screen. On previous generations this was the default screen but it's buried behind a hidden damn menu? Grrrr! Thank you!
Thanks!
Thanks, that did the trick, it was driving me crazy after returning to Samsung after 8 years or so of other phones.
The setting on the samsung A52 s (android 13) looked like it already had google pointed as the password manager, but when I pressed the word: Samsung password manager !
it finally gave a pop-up to choose Google.
(Really press the word samsung password mamager, Not the "gear", really press the word. The gear is there for settings of the "chosen" manager)
Now it finally works as intended, thanks again!
Worked like a charm!, so annoying not more obvious
