Android 12 lock screen and my S20 Notifications - General Questions and Answers

Hey guys, trying to figure this out, just reset my phone because it's been a while. I thought i used to be able to tap the power button and the screen would turn off. If i got a text or email, my screen would turn on and i would see who it was from, the subject, etc. Now what happens is the screen stays black. If i tap the power button again i then see the lock screen with my messages, etc. How do i get rid of that black screen or the phone not going directly to the active lock screen?

Have you set any Always On Display? Looks like a problem with Lockscreen notifications, can you check if that settings isn't set to Off? (Settings > Lockscreen > Notifications)

hey, thanks for the reply. always on display is set to on (didn't think it needed to be before) but i dont' mind. notifications are set to on. here are a couple screen shots. the AOD pic is after i sent the emails, nothing shows up. The lockscreen pic is what i want it to look like when i get an email. any other help would be much appreciated, i have spent more time on this than i care to admit.

I don't think AOD needs to be on (mine is set to tap to show), but that was just in case that would be the culprit.
Notifications failing to wake the screen is pretty common, is that the case for every notifications you have or only some apps?
Edit: Browing Samsung forums I read that somebody have the same issue and it was Google Messaging app that was causing the notifications to not wake the screen. Could that be your case?

thanks again for helping. it is the case for every app, nothing wakes the screen.. i don't use google messaging, just aqua mail for email and Pulse SMS for texting.

I remember having a similar issue when I did not set up Edge Lighting, I'm pretty sure yours must be turned off?Settings > Notifications >Brief pop style, and turn on show when screen is off.

interesting. I had notifications set to detailed. i changed it to brief and then the notification pops up briefly, the edge lighting works then the screen goes black again. I then still have to push the power button for the lock screen to come on but at least there is something working. It isn't too useful as i would have to be looking at my phone at the time a message comes in but it's something.

Another solution would be to install the Glimpse Notifications app, but it sucks to have to install a 3rd party app for something that should be available right out the box.
Edit: Glimpse need notifications to be set to detailed instead of brief.

couple things. i don't mind installing a 3rd party app at all, just want it to work. is it supposed to work right out of the box? so i installed glimpse and it just basically did what it did before, wake the screen. I went in though and changed a couple options and it seems to have fixed the problem. i am going to have to go back in and look but now it is popping up my lock screen exactly how i wanted it. thanks so much, i REALLY appreciate it. now to fix my wife's S10. Still curious why it didn't work without this app.

I've always used Edge Lighting on my S10e and I remember being bothered by the non-waking screen with Notifications set to Detailed. I don't know if Detailed notifications are supposed to wake the screen or not, but they used to with my old device (Galaxy S5), so I was surprised that they didn't on the S10e.
I'm glad Glimpse works for you, apparently that's what people use to get around that screen waking issue.

ya, i thought it was Android 12 that had something to do with it. Either way, i don't care, just glad it's working again. Thanks so much for your help, really appreciated.

LED notifications on Galaxy J7 2016

A friend of mine has a brand new Samsung Galaxy J7. When they were using the Nokia N9:
- whenever a call was missed or a text arrived, a LED diode blinked
- there was a low-power screen on the AMOLED display, showing the information about the missed calls, just like on the photo below

try download Light Manager Pro
after installed go to Advanced settings>show horloge and show date
and enjoy
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.istudio.flashnotification
That doesnt work. The closest thing you will get is the camera to flash.. but thats only the rear camera so if youre device is laying down you will still miss notifications cause you cant see the light flashing.. its probably not good on the battery either. There just isnt any standard led notification lights... i guess you got to check manually i mean if youre already looking at youre phone to check for a blinking light you may as well just click the home or power button to see the notifications on youre lock screen..
There's an app on this J7 forum that uses the front flash for notifications
Front Flash Notification & Torch
Try it out.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.megawave.flashalerts
This one makes youre front and back cameras flash but its only for a couple seconds so if youre not in the dark or in the same room as the phone you wont see it... then say if you was out of the room and it went off youd miss it and never know there was a notification until the next time one came in while you was right there or when youd actually turn youre screen back on.. its a hit n miss on notifications cause theres no real led light and have to use the cameras which flashes only last a couple seconds.
Hej, jakim cudem masz w N9 skonfigurowanego Twittera??? / How do You connect native Harmattan Twitter app???
try noled app
you can use noled app for notifications..i can say its better than notification led..when you receive mail sms or missed call(..whatsapp message, and whatever you want) it appears on black screen and customizable..

Alarm without waking the screen possible?

I've set a number of alarms to remind me of all kinds of regular things during the day. When an alarm goes off, the screen wakes up. Is there a way to prevent this? By the time I've taken the phone out of my pocket, it has opened five apps and ordered a fridge...

The screen waking, usually is part of the "wake-up" ..... you can always turn your screen down in brightness, see if that helps. And btw there are some good sales on fridges these days, some even with internet connection/capability.

But why would the brightness make a difference? The problem is that when the alarm goes off, it switches the screen on. Once the screen is on, it takes any random movement in the pocket as touches, including unlocking (by sliding up in the case of my phone) and touching on things on the home screen. I want it to sound the alarm without waking the phone/touchscreen.

How do you screw up setting the alarm time so bad that it goes off in your pocket not your bedside table
Not exactly addressing the original question, but you could try setting a pattern lock. Unless your pocket is intelligent, that should stop fridges piling up in your home.

I use it for all kinds of reminders during the day, "leave to pick up kid from school", that sort of things.

I thought of that, but that would mean I have to do the stupid pattern or number code each of the other 3948291 times a day I need my phone.

Maybe a reminder app that doesn't turn the screen on, but just dings in your pocket? I don't use one so I can't point you toward anything particular. Just an idea.

Yes, thanks, that's what I'll look for if there's no easy fix. (My phone is quite full, so I don't want to add unnecessary apps.)

EMUI 8.0.0, Android 8.0.0, Google Messages (with channel Notification) - Help?

Not sure really where to go with this, except I'm hoping with someone with a bit more experience on these builds will know what's going on, explain why what I want won't work, or what I can do to fix. Or at least if it's an EMUI thing, an Oreo thing, or a Messages thing to know what to look into changing.
I'm running the builds downloaded from the https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-6x/development/update-bln-l22c675-emui-5-x-x-to-emui-8-t3819317 build. I also installed Messages v3.8.037 (basilisk_RC15).
It seems the Messages app starting at 3.7.052 at least, Messages started using channel notifications on Oreo. Whenever I go into the app and try to change the notification options, it seems to redirect me to the phone Notification settings directly to the "Messages - Other Notifications" section. Under that, there's only an option to turn ringtone on or off, not to set the sound for it. I can set a ringtone for each contact in the contacts app, but that seems to change the call and messages ringtone, and I really just want a way to distinguish a notification that I got ANY text from getting ANY email, ANY motion detection on my security cam, etc.
Bear with me on my journey here, I don't know how to resize these without making them all JPG'y and unreadable...
I tap on the vertical ellipses in the Messages app and tap on settings, and this screen pops up.

}
I then tap on the Notification option, and it brings up the screen I was talking about above, where I can't set the ringtone, only turn it on or off.
The same experience happens if I start from Settings, which appears to be all EMUI'd out.
Without EMUI, I think you'd get App Info, according to all posts I've seen. In EMUI 8.0.0, I tap on Apps.
I then had to tap Messages, then Notifications (not pictured) and it takes me to this. Nowhere between are options to change the sounds either. Tapping on any of these takes me to the exact same thing as image 2, but it shows the subheading of whatever I tap on here (example -- image 2 is what I get tapping on "Other notifications"). Notice there's a separate setting here specifically for my wife for some reason.
Here's my build infos:
Thanks for any info you can give me, even if it's just education. I know it seems piddly, but I'm thinking this will apply to anything with channel notifications. For instance, I just noticed my security cam app appears to use channel notifications and I can't change it for that either.
So what you wanna do is to set individual sounds for some contacts? Well, as far as I know the option isn't available in EMUI 8. Or at least I don't know how to.

It's not that, I can do that in contacts. It's that I want ANY text to come through to be sound A, whereas email alerts are sound B, security camera app alerts are sound C. You can see above that I can't set the sound for Messages app.
Pretty sure that's not possible. Try Googling it.

Ya, I had it in Nougat and got spoiled with it. I set my texts to be "Hey, Listen" from Navi in Legend of Zelda, and I set my emails to be a rupee sound, and security system to be the "opening big chest" sound. now they're all the standard system notification sound
I can switch to Textra like all of the Googles suggests, but I like having the Google app and the "Messages for Web" functionality. Guess I'll have to live with this or go back to Nougat. But this has been a whole different phone since I've gotten Oreo/EMUI8. WAY less lag/lockups. So I'll deal.

Confused by notification sounds under vibration mode

Hi, my Pixel 3a is making a sound whenever there is a notification, although I have set the phone to vibrate (even in the do-not-disturb mode!). I have used Android phones for the past eight years, so I think I am pretty familiar with all the little things with Android, but I am just confused to hell about what is going on. I checked a few settings, and they look okay to me (which means that it would behave "normally" on my old phone). I have media volume set to non zero, but that should not matter as I understand.
I think if I turn off app notification sound in individual app's notification settings it should work, but obviously it is a daunting task that I do not want to bother.
I wonder if you can offer some advice. Thank you.

Yeah this confuses me as well. The only way i found was to tap the notifcation symbol again so it turns to the bell with the line through it. But then theres no vibrate either

I still have the notification sounds under the mute mode (and was again waken by a sound at 5am this morning). I suspected this may have something to do with Google Assistant, and while I am not 100% sure about it, I tried something and it worked for me: I turned off "notification access" (Apps & notifications > special app access, or via search) of "Google" and some other apps, tried to trigger notifications, and the phone vibrated/stayed silent as expected. I turned them back on, and everything still works fine. Hope they do not com back.
You may want to give that a try.
EDIT: DO NOT turn the access back on -- it may fail after you reconnect to your Bluetooth headset.

There is a thread for it now:
https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixe..._bug/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
Since these notification channels were implemented, the whole way of the notifications being served got upside down and confusing. R&D forgot at 7.0 already that android is a phone os, some people don't have time to granularly tune each and every app and set the sound and vibrate and other bs.
Same here, Facebook's notifications can come with a weird sound even if I cut off any sound...

Question Calendar Notification inconsistency

Hello,
I searched for this calendar thing before but I did not find anything similar to this so a new post, so my question is, I have my Google calendar filled with some daily activities and on the time mentioned in that event, I get a notification and it shows on the watch, so these events are created by using recurrence, so the one that comes on the next day is exactly the same, but one day on my watch instead of just a normal notification, I saw a screen similar to when we turn off the alarm but for the event, but just once and never saw it again even though the events are exactly same for all the days, am I missing something? is there a way where I can see that screen every time the event is notified? I think that is a better reminder that just a simple vibration/sound which is same for every other notifications.
Not sure if I follow what you are saying, but my notifications come up with snooze or close (I think) if I have a reminder set.

yes! this is what I want, but I get a simple text notification which is just a normal informative/non-interactive notification, so I got the snooze/close screen once, and I had set an event(like every other activity), I'll check if setting a reminder does the thing.
Update: So I set a reminder and this is how I get a notification, and this is how I get for any event too, but I want that stop/snooze screen instead of a simple notification

No, I don't
I would start there and check notification settings on the phone. Not really sure what you may have done, but that is where I would start. Check calendar first. Setup a event and see if you can get it to show. I am not sure, but the Samsung calendar app does not show this as a pop-up. Only as a notification.

Ok, let me check if I can get that screen on the phone first, I'll update you with the results.
tldr; Reminder screen for calendar event only shows up if the watch is not connected to the phone, looking for ways to get that screen to show up when connected to the phone.
I think I found the issue, I was charging my watch and I usually put it on airplane mode while charging so it disconnects from the phone and during the time I was charging it there was one daily event that I had set up on Google Calendar which was due, so when the watch was disconnected, it showed me that stop and snooze screen for that particular event, so I don't know if this counts as a solution that whenever I'll want to see the reminder screen(stop and snooze), I'll have to disconnect my watch and only then it'll show me that screen. I feel that this should be present even if the watch is connected to the phone, after trying to play with some settings I found out that, reminder screen only appears when it is disconnected from the phone
things I tried(Did not work):
- Turned off the notifications from the GC app
- Turned off notifications from the wearable app for GC
both of these settings did not work, will be trying more
edit1
things I tried (did not work):
- Disabling the GC app
- Downgrading the GC app to the native version which came pre-installed with the stock rom of phone.
The reminder screen that is displayed is from Samsung calendar app and when the watch is connected to the phone, I guess it expects the phone to trigger the reminder screen but as I have a non Samsung phone I only have GC which only shows the generic notification as a reminder.
