I just got a 6a. I have an older Pixel 3A XL that I am trying to trade in. The phone was rooted (but I just uninstalled Magisk) and I never took most updates so the phone is still on Android 10. I am wondering which stock firmware I should download to get this back to factory settings so I can lock the boot loader?
Do I need to download the newest Android 12 OTA update and then flash a stock rom or should I just download an Android 10 stock from and flash that?
Android 10 has less "surprises" in it... scoped storage will be fully enforced in 12.

If you are trading it in, just back up anything you want from it, factory reset it and flash a factory image to it. Then run the OEM bootloader lock command. You can also go into Developer Options and turn off bootloader unlock and reset it again. Doesn't matter which factory image because you are not keeping the phone or selling it. When they get the phone, they will likely reflash the latest factory image to it anyway.
To reiterate, flash the factory image, not the OTA image. Factory images contain everything, including the modem/bootloader/etc. That way everything is likely to work together properly. Mismatched firmware/modem/bootloader from flashing an OTA can be a bad day.
So if I had my 4a rooted a couple years ago, but went back to stock, I should be able to just factory reset, right? No flashing needed? Does it matter if you send it back with bootloader unlocked?

I think you should re-lock the bootloader, just to be on the safe side; it's an easy thing to do. I had to do a warranty replacement for my Pixel 4 XL a few years ago and the google technician told me to relock the bootloader when returning the 'defective' device.
Google is not going to deny your trade in due to being rooted. This is not a warranty replacement! The only requirements are that the screen turns on and is not cracked.
Just go into settings and do a "factory reset" and turn the phone in. Doing anything more is simply a waste of time.

Yep, Im sure all our old devices are just promptly going in the trash or possibly to a donation project so theyre not going to care.
The best way to return your device to bone stock is with the Android Flash Tool. Ensure you check the "Force flash all partitions" and "Wipe device" boxes, as well as "Lock bootloader' if desired.

just use the one click root tool by kennethpenn, work perfectly thanks. use titanium back to do a backup of all the app and system then took out all the att bloatware. i have few questions at this point.
1.
will i be able to get OTA updates from att? what will happen to all the bloatware that i deleted? would they appear again?
2.
what happens if i do a factory reset on the phone? would i brick the phone? under normal condition that will erase all apps i installed and return it to factory setting, that means all the att bloatware will be back? will i lost root?
3.
what other things i can do after i root the phone at this point?
thank you for your help
no one can help me with those questions??? anyone???
i am sure a lot of people have the same question.
1.

I'm not 100% sure on this, but as long as you're running an actual AT&T ROM (not an Asian or Rogers ROM), you'll be notified of the OTA's. Now, if you're not using the stock Recovery image (that is, if you've installed CWM Recovery), you won't be able to apply the update. OTA updates get applied via the stock Recovery image.
2.

If you do a factory reset from CWM or within the phone's UI, you're fine. Root will remain in place, and you won't brick it. It just clears the user data from the phone, and should leave "sdcard" intact. However, I'm not 100% sure what happens if you do a factory reset from the bootloader. So just don't do it that way, unless someone else can confirm that it's okay.
3.

You ca use apps like AutoKiller to change your memory management, for one. That's about all I'm doing with root right now. If we ever get custom kernels, you'll be able to overclock your CPU. If you search the Play Store for "root," you'd doubtlessly find some other root apps that you may be interested in.
Hope this helps!
Don't ever ever ever install an OTA on any rooted Android device. At the least, it won't work anyway, or you will lose root. At the worst, you will be stuck in a bootloop. Updated ROMs (based on the OTA's, but rooted, and safe to flash) usually get posted in Development soon after the OTA's go out. That is what you want to install.

I can confirm that it's OK. My phone was rooted and stuck in a boot loop. I did a factory reset. It was reset and still rooted after the fact. So you can do it.
thank you all

Just to clarify, pre-rooted versions of the official ROMs (which often get posted on XDA, as I mentioned) may need unlocked bootloader to install, so this will possibly not be an option for a while. Although there may be alternate safe ways to update (but not OTA). For instance, a leaked 1.83 firmware version is already available as an RUU in the Development subforum. Apparently, its okay to install via RUU, then re-root.
In general, the safe thing to do is to read up on here when updates are released, and see if there is a safe way to update on a rooted phone.
I updated to the most recent 4.1.2 for my motorola hd razr but I totally don't like the updates. The volumn when people calling is lots quieter than before and the system seem to lag more than before.
I emailed motorola and they told me to turn off the phone and use vol up+down+power to go into the recovery option and whip all the caches. I thought that'll also whip the update and recover to the version when I first bought the phone.
Can't remember the version when I first bought the phone. I think it's something like 4.0.1 or 4.1.1.
How can I restore the phone to that version?

You will have to either root install safestrap and install one of those in a rom slot or unlock your bootloader and fastboot one of the deodexed versions back to your device. Option c is to just try a different rom. Option d is to do a factory reset and see if that helps.

I guess I will try a factory reset then...it should be in those phone settings right? or there's some hidden code I need to punch in or something to do a factory reset?
totally new with androids no idea how to flash a different rom
In the phone settings go to Privacy and you will see Factory data reset. This will not return you to any other rom, just wipe all user data and cache data.
The only way to return from 4.1.2 to any other rom is to unlock the boot loader as Koftheworld said. There are may tutorials out there on how to do that and quite a few tool boxes that can do all the heavy lifting for you. Do some forum searches for 'tool kit' or 'utility' and you should be able to find some.
So the power button on my phone is working intermittently and I took it to Bestbuy for them to replace it with my insurance. The dude there wanted to wipe and do a factory reset on my phone, because it was part of the procedure they had to do. (Why they do this, I have no idea,) This had never happened to me before, so I didn't backup my phone and flash back to stock like I usually do if I have to get a phone serviced. I told him I would back it up at home, and be back another day.
So basically what I need is a ROM for the Galaxy S3 that is as close to stock as possible so this dude can reset my phone (for no reason)? This ROM needs to be able to stand up to a little scrutiny from a Geeksquad employee.I would just flash back to stock 4.3, but that will lock my bootloader. I need a stock 4.3 ROM that doesn't lock bootloader, and will reset the "Verizon way".
Just odining to stock won't lock your bootloader. You'd have to actually download and install the update. But if you're getting a replacement why do you care? You're not going to have the phone any longer anyway. But just as an FYI, if you do replace your phone, chances are you'll get one with the updated firmware and a locked bootloader.
Good luck.

I don't think I will get an update phone, as I had a cracked screen in mid January and received a phone on 4.1.2
I'm having of a hell time getting into download mode as well. For some reason after I go to download mode, the screen goes away after a few seconds.
To do a factory reset the "Verizon way" you need a stock recovery. If you really want to, load cleanrom 8, then use ez-recovery to flash the stock recovery to the phone. But if you have to turn it in to get a new phone you might have to Odin back to stock anyway, and could get in trouble having a custom rom loaded.
They can do a factory reset through the stock recovery and probably won't notice you're custom, and you won't have to worry about it updating to 4.3.

Don't get a new s3. Most likely it'll come preloaded with 4.3 and you'll be stuck on TW ROMs only.
Watch, as I combine all the juice from my mind...
If vzw store has some of the older s3 it wnt come preloaded but will load wen u set up. So u might be lucky and get a 4.1 or 4.2 s3

My completely stock Pixel started bootlooping this afternoon (I still think its a hardware problem, but I'm not sure) and I already tried factory resetting and sideloading a rescue OTA through the stock recovery (which didn't fix it), but I am unable to flash a fresh factory image because I never thought to enable the OEM Unlock toggle when it was working properly (because naive me decided to use the complete stock experience on this phone).
The phone will normally crash/restart at the Google wordmark or logo, but sometimes it will make it all the way to the initial set up before restarting again. I was wondering if there was any way to manually erase/format the other partitions without totally bricking my device, or am I pretty my SOL because I never toggled the "OEM Unlock"?
Thanks.
Edit: Just checked and Slot A on my bootloader is "unbootable", but I'm not entirely sure what that means.
You can still run stock but with unlocked bootloader. It's simply gives far more options when things go wrong.

Hi
A couple of days ago I tried to root my Pixel 2, it was locked and I unlcoked and then flashed it. During that process it got very close to a bricked state.
It now has a flash Android 10 on it but all of the gestures that I had last week as part of Android are gone and I can't do what I wanted to do anyway, so I'd like to go back to stock factory with a locked bootloader. Exactly as it was last week.
can anyone please tell me how to do that and if that will also restore the up swipe, left & right swipes (to switch between apps and show all open apps).
I am aware of the gestures app which I have installed but I just want to rewind history and forget I changed anything. i also hate the fact that I get told that it's in an unsafe condition every time reboot.
thanks
Stephen
Download factory image from Google site, flash it and lock back the bootloader.
While I don't use the gestures feature at all, I don't think that your issue is related to the unlocked bootloader. At first I would try to do the factory reset from the ROM itself, it will reset to the default state, but the phone stay rooted and unlocked bootloader state.
