Wipe /system remove fingerprints? - General Questions and Answers

Hi everyone, I'm not sure if I'm posting in the right place, so forgive me if I'm in the wrong place.
The title says it all: Does wiping the /system partition remove my fingerprints? I'm running lineage 18.1, I'm experiencing the battery draining very quickly, so I wanted to try a GApps that allows me to optimize Google services, I'm using MindTheGapps (Recommended by LineageOS), but I saw that NikkGapps allows me to do what I want, so I would like to test it, but I don't want to do it on top of another gapps, so I would clean /system.
But I share my fingerprint with my girlfriend, and re-enrolling her fingerprint is boring. So I wanted to know if the wipe in /system would erase the prints, or can I do it with peace of mind?
Thank's

No, wiping system partition doesn't wipe stored fingerprints because they are stored in the data partition. When flashing ROMs, wiping data partition(factory reset) is required unless you are flashing an updated version of a ROM that you already have installed, such as having LineageOS installed and then updating to a newer version of LineageOS, you can just flash the new ROM without having to wipe anything.

Hi, unfortunately I couldn't test if it would work... I wiped /system /dalvik /cache, installed ROM and GApps, but was unable to boot, stuck in bootloop, forced to format /data partition Anyway, thanks for your time!

[Q] [ROM] Vanilla AOSP Gingerbread HELP: Stuck on Japanese Keyboard

Help, please! I need someone to go over to the developers' forum to ask kornyone this (I have yet to post ten posts to gain access over there):
Since flashing to this ROM, I cannot switch keyboards. It's stuck on the huge Japanese keyboard which takes up 2/3 of the screen. I keep trying to change it to either Gingerbread or Swiftkey in Settings, but nothing doing. Rebooting doesn't work, forcing stop doesn't work and switching launchers does nothing.
Has anyone else encountered this...and how is it fixed? Thanks!
You try reflashing? Maybe something glitched during your install.
Here is how I installed the very same ROM. I really like it.
Go into CWM recovery
clear data/factory reset
mount system and data
format both system and data
format cache
format dalvik (in advanced)
flash rom from sdcard
then format cache and dalvik again
and do clear data/factory reset again
finally install the gapps package from the Vanilla gBread thread.
It's probably a little redundant to do it this way, but it always works for me.

Sounds a little bit like 'The Nuclear Option' to me
That will certainly get you back to square one and about as clean as you can get.
However, I might suggest just going into CWM and reflashing the ROM without clearing any data (might go ahead and clear cache). This should reset the /system partition back to stock, without messing up your /data.
Re-flashing without clearing /data is *generally* safe if you are staying on the same ROM (and often between different ROMS, but not always).
This might get your keyboard back without having to reload all your apps, etc.

I might need the nuclear option. I reflashed the ROM by itself before I posted this cry for help and it made it worse - couldn't discern one launcher from another. I'm thinkin' if I'm going to do a system wipe, I might as well try another ROM. Gingerbread is nice, but the hassles are no fun.
Thanks for the suggestions, though!

few questions regarding clean install on ics

Hi i'm currently running one of ics roms , although i'm suffering from reboots, so i want to do a clean install.
My questions;
- is it safe for me to wipe cache partition, even if I've never did partition my storage,
- can i delete from my sdcard such a files like (android data, lost, lazy list, android secure) prior to install new room?
Thank you everyone in advance ...

You can wipe everything just don't wipe SD card.
flash rom and davlik wiper zips found here before installing new rom and you will get clean install and it doesnt erase your sd. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21588527&postcount=2

[Q] Checklist before selling Infinity

Hi everyone,
I have been thinking of selling my Infinity but I need some confirmation in some things with regards to wiping the device clean.
I am currently running the latest CROMI-X. So what I wanted to do is wipe everything in my internal storage (all the datas or any kind of prints that shows my usage) and then flash back the latest CROMI-X.
So a couple of things in wipe. I am using TWRP 2.5 as of the moment. So if I wanted to achieve the one I mentioned above which kind of wipe should I do?
If I go to Advanced Wipe: I can see that Dalvik Cache, System, cache, Data and Micro SDcard is present there... If I go ahead and check all of these (except for the Micro SD Card) I believe that I this would also delete the OS itself. Am I correct? If this does it, will I still be able to install a ROM for my infinity? There's also the option of Format Data, which I think wipes clean my internal storage (pictures, videos, etc). This won't affect the System, right?
If you guys have a better suggestion on how to actually do this, please let me know as well. I apologize if there's a lot of question here... I just wanted to make sure that I am doing this right as I don't want to brick my device before actually selling it. Thanks.
To delete all user data, format /data. This automatically includes dalvik-cache and /data/media aka /sdcard. You don't need to format /system as it contains only the ROM.
If you are paranoid that a potential buyer could use "undelete" tools and piece together fragments of your data on the block level, then before formatting /data, you can completely overwrite the data partition from the recovery with the following command (in the "advanced" menu or via adb shell): "dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p8 bs=256k".

Formatting /data for a custom "ROM" ??? NO !!!

Hi all,
A lot of people here and there are struggling to boot their new custom roms.
To be short :
=========
format /data (not wipe) is " NOT " mandatory for every new rom installed like many think because this will erase the whole " internal storage ".
To avoid that, just do a simple " wipe ". Then go (with the TWRP file manager) to /data and delete the residual "encryption" folders and files and keep only /media folder.
Doing " format " is only needed when you change your file system (for a kernel reason) : ext4 <=> f2fs !!!
Don't use any " Encryption disabler .zip ", otherwise your FOD will not work !!!
That's all.
Just to be clearer, you have to delete all inside /data, unless /media folder.

I think the problem with the term 'delete' is that people will think you mean 'wipe'. 'Wipe' and 'format' actually mean different things. The latter is what is actually required.
This method will not Work at 100%
It depends on the encryption Key from the Rom
Deleting /Data without deleting Media will simply Work to have a bootable State of the flashed Rom but your internal Data will be encrypted and your Rom cant decrypt /Data/media anymore also the Recovery after reboot.
it Happens because of a different Decryption Key in /Data
For Safety and Security reasons i would Not recommend doing this, unless you have a Backup.

1.the rom boots and can't decrypt data anymore ??? wtf is this ??? a new science ???
2.where do you think encryption keys are stored ??? in the cloud ???
3. a device with FOD requires encryption in data otherwise the FOD will not work !
4. how do you think i built the TWRP for this device ???? (check my first thread in the forum for this device)
You should never talk about things you don't know very well !!!
The world is upside down these days ... and i'm really bored with idiocracy !
Sorry If i have Not so much knowledge.
But i have done your steps above
Went from Evo X to Derpfest Rom
Everything was fine then i realised my Internal Storage was encrypted.
Maybe i forgot to mention ive used Official Twrp Not your twrp, also maybe its my own mistake
Thank you for your serious words.

All devices with FOD (fingerprint on display) require encryption to work (These are the new standard policies by Qualcomm & Google). If you use a decryption script that you can find here and there ... your FOD will not work !!! It's not a normal fingerprint ... can you understand ???
My TWRP was made 3 months before the official one. It's built by stock official blobs from xiaomi !
The official TWRP uses a generic kernel not official kernel by xiaomi ! So there are and will be always
some stuffs missings !!! That's why there are many people struggling with backups and rom installations !
im almost got it.
But the only except is Dirty unicorns Rom, they need always an internal storage format.
They are not using Public keys
maybe i known why from alex cruz

To avoid encryption problems between flashing different roms the easiest thing to do is just go to lockscreen settings and delete the PIN or Pattern, this will delete the FP stored as well and you can then flash any rom you want without issues. No more encryption problems and no need to flash any zips and kill the FOD.
Also, I always wipe data as well as "internal storage" if changing roms, there's nothing wrong with that... That way I have a perfectly clean start.

U used some roms or only your lineage?
This is exactly what I was searching for!
Does this apply to other phones as well? The ones for which ROM developers always ask to format the internal storage on the phone (OnePlus 6T for me)?
Now that I've finally found this thread, I'd like to also know, is encryption the only culprit due to which it's recommended to format all the data? If yes, why wouldn't one simply remove their screen-lock (I assume that will decrypt any data on the phone), change ROM without formatting internal storage and then keep another screen-lock?
Actually, encryption issues jumping from ROM to ROM is more complicated than that if you don’t know what encryption type is used by the ROMs.
A. Sometimes you might need to format (not just wipe) the data partition. If you format the data partition before flashing the new ROM, then you must reboot OrangeFox immediately afterwards, and, most definitely, before doing anything else.
B. If you are moving from a ROM that uses a different encryption protocol (eg, from FDE ROM to FBE ROM or vice-versa), then you must format the data partition preferably after flashing the new ROM, and then boot to system.
C. If you are moving from a stock ROM to a custom ROM (or vice versa), then you must format the data partition.
D. If you boot the newly flashed ROM, and it gets stuck forever on the Google/Android logo, or just dumps you at fastboot or straight back to OrangeFox, this might be a sign that you need to format the data partition.

Thats right just changed my Rom for Crdroid to Spark I didnt format data just WIPED it. The rom Boots up clean. I also deleted the ANDROID folder in case. there were nothing else in the DATA. You must have to Flash Force Decrypt file after flashing a rom

Do I need to format data (deleting everything) to install lineageOS?

Hello, forum!
My current Pixel 2 is using the stock google system but I haven't updated the OS since March, partly because it's rooted
and the update process is not as easy.
Now that google said it'd only support the phone till this December, I'm thinking to install lineageOS.
However according to its installation guide:
...
3. Now tap Wipe.
4. Now tap Format Data and continue with the formatting process. This will remove encryption and delete all files stored in the internal storage.
...
It's surprising that it need clear internal storage?
p.s. I may also think about installing Resurrection Rom. Does it require 'formatting data' then?
Afaik you must back up everything before installing new ROM, because when you install custom ROM you will wipe and format system and it will erase everything in your internal storage
If its rooted try modded version of twrp to backup your internal data as well

No, it's not, nobody wipes /data/media during rom replacement only /data.
However if his bootloader is locked, bootloader unlock will wipe everything, so before switching from stock a backup is must.
Alright, guys. Thanks for the input. Guess I'll just backup the internal storage and do as told.
