I've tried a bunch of new 6.5 UI roms and I am facing this problem with all of them.
1. The OK button (bottom right) does not close applications. It simply minimizes them. This is really frustrating since I dont know what apps are open until i pull up the task manager. This also drains battery life. How do i make the OK button close an app? (detailed instructions appreciated)
2. The earlier UI used to have a quick task manager on the top right corner from which we could switch apps and close them. that doesnt come anymore, instead i get this new and useless notification bar. How do i make it show the quick task manager? (detailed instructions appreciated)
The above 2 make it really annoying to switch/close apps because once u minimize, the only way to go back to them it seems is to pull up dot fred task manager.
3. Pressing the home button on the device while running an app (the home iconed hardware button under the screen) takes me to the opened start menu not the home screen. when i exit out of the start menu it takes me back to the app, so i cannot access my homescreen unless i press ok on the app and minimize it, is there any way to make the hom button take me to the homescreen?

3 : use end button instead of home (which is an HTC non-sense, get the start menu like your rom is configured is really a better idea)
fantastic app - showcase. that solves my task manager problem, but i still have to press start, go to apps and press showcase to bring it up, can i have it mapped on the notification area so i can simply fire it up without having to go to the start menu?

I have been having issues with Showcase not wanting to install or run properly on the newest 6.5 build 23071. If I load v1.0.1 It will work for the most part and I can configure it to still to close a program by clicking on the clock.. How ever when I switch to the newer 1.1.0 build I can not get the lower X to close thing like it should by either holding it or by setting to single tap.
I'm currently doing a hard reset because of trying taskfacade and trying to go back to Showcase.
i just installed 1.1.0 and it seems to be working fine. i even managed to figure out how to bring it up from any app. just tap and hold the win key and it comes up. very nice software.
Ya I have it back up and working. The only other issue to look forward to with Showcase is that some report it closing tmail.exe from time to time. I also map my PTT short press to open it for those programs that take the full screen and do not have the Windows icon.
You can also check out AEButton+. You have to pay for it, but it's pretty cheap. I got it last week, and have no idea why I didn't get it sooner. Haven't tried it on the newer com3 builds yet (still using com2), but I'm pretty sure it will close things. It isn't tied into the displaced 'X' button like a lot of task managers. You can close apps with a button push, and it also has a nice little task manager pop-up that you can also map to a button push (similar to the htc quick menu). You also get ~dozen more mappable button pushes on a fuze. It's really worth it, although I haven't tried a com3/4 6.5 build yet.
Newer WM6.5.1 builds such as 23071... clicking on the clock brings up the new drop down taskbar...
Running HTC Task Manager, you have to tap and hold, then release to get the task manager to shop up. Does Showcase experience this as well?
It seems to be with the new builds. I would assume Showcase would function the same.
Why don't you people just use inbuilt taskmanager.exe from Windows folder? I've configured it to open with long press "send" key (talk button), and it's working great.
I use aebutton and tie it to my Ok/Back key to close apps and it's working like a treat. that's the best way to really close apps I feel
i have a custom winmo 6.5 rom aslo, everything runs good on it, except the onscreen keyboard is useless now, all i can seem to enter are numbers only and i have messed with the input settings to see if that can correct it and so far to no avail or maybe im just one of the weird people who actualy use the onscreen compact qwerty i dunno.
Hi guys, i was wondering if there was any app that would stay in the dock and you could press it to go to the last application you were on. (and if you do, then when you press it again you go back to the application you were on before you pressed it allowing you to toggle between two windows)
Uhm why not use the < (back) and [[]] (last apps) button ?
The beauty of the type of back button i am talking about is that it would allow you to toggle between two applications. The back button goes back but then to go "backwards on the back" you have to go find the app again
I just got my tf and am loving it! One thing Icant figure out is how to exit programs. I can go to the icon that looks like tow screens and that pulls up all of my open programs. I have notice sme have an exit button and some don't ( like YouTube) is there a way to exit programhat don't have a exit button in their menu?

only in windows you need to exit/close, android manages programs a little different but that is a topic that has been beat down to the ground.
You can back out of an application to the point it actually closes, the home screen leaves it cached under the assumption you may go back.
One thing to note is that even if you do close an app completely it will still show up in that app switching window. That is a list of recent apps, not what is active. Its assumed that recent apps were cached so its for quickly switching back to things you had open before.

To my knowledge, an experienced Android user would properly exit an application by backing out of it, but I've seen many people use the home button for this.
I've had my AT&T Galaxy S II for about a month now and I've used the home button less than ten times (keeping an app open or exiting if back didn't work).
how often do you use it?
I usually use the home button to exit an app, so I do it all the time. I only use the back button if I need to go backwards in an application. It's faster for me that way.
I have to agree with mrhaxx. I use the home button all the time to exit an application. I have never had a problem with an app staying running in the background by doing that. Android is usually pretty good about exiting the app like that.

Same here. I try to press Back button, but many times I have to use Home button:
·I know I will have to press Back a lot of times (many websites in browser for example)
·More times than I wish, an app just won't exit pressing Back, so I have to press Home.
I'm in rehab of using task killers though.. haha
really depends on the app.
For example, the default SMS app on my phone will keep the last thread i opened on to. If I don't back out of it on exit, I'll have to do it anyway later, so I usually use the back button for that. for other stuff, I usually use the home button.

I like when I have to press it a lot, then i can spam it like a mad man haha
When you press the home button it sometimes doesn't close the app so it will waste a lot of ram.
I always use the back button to exit an app. The home button just takes you to the home page and if your app is still doing something it will continue to remain active and when its done doing whatever it's doing it will be cached. But I think it all depends on how well the app was written.

No, the only way RAM is 'wasted' is when it's not being used.
even if you press home button for exiting apps, it really doesnt exit the app at that moment in time ... it exits the app only when free space is required .. and yeah i use the home button for exiting the apps
Sometime I press the homebutton to exit a application and then click on the shotcut ''end all apps'' from my taskmanager on the homescreen. This method is the fast because some apps you must click to much ''back'' to exit it.
I wouldn't use the end all apps in the task manager...i've read bad things about them.
I use the back button mostly, unless its the browser. I've also heard a lot of bad about task killers lately, so I use it only to check what's running. Ics seems to be much better at ending apps than previous versions of android.

I use the home button all the time, it was designed to be used all the time, and I like to use android in the way it was made to be used
I typically reserve back button usage for when I want to stay within an app, or go back to an old app, e.g. clicking a twitter link opens the page in the browser, pressing back takes me back to the tweet.
i use to back out a lot in gingerbread, to clear the app from the background. Upon updating to ICS i use the home button so much more, probably because of how well the new multitasking closes it's processes.

But honestly, most of the time I don't really notice a difference. Not that huge, anyway. I usually only use the home button when I'm in the middle of something in that app and I need to get to another app..
But after discovering Swipepad, I seldom use the home button these days.

good observation. I think I'll be using the home button a lot more when ICS is released for my phone.
I like the recent activities button on the GNex. Try to use that to switch apps when I remember its there!

It depends on what I want the app to do, and if i am multitasking.
Hi all, I want to try Cyanogenmod 7 (latest nightly of course), but I realized that the end button (red end call button) behavior is different from the stock rom. The stock rom behavior is:
if not in home screen -> go to home screen
if in home screen -> do nothing
if locked and screen turned on -> turn screen off
everything else -> do nothing
Notice that pressing the end button seems to be different than pressing the home button: if the current foreground activity does not respond, home button won't work (ANR window will show up); end button, instead, will simply go to home screen, like if it's killing the current activity. However, relaunching the closed activity restores its previous state (like when I use the home button to get away from an activity).
Cyanogenmod has stock gingerbread behavior (which should be fine, I know it's the android way), but I really would like to preserve my habits.
I already tried:
Spare parts: does not have the option I'd like
Remapping keys via keymaps: doesn't work since behavior cannot be defined using the available built-in commands
I'll get my hands dirty in the Android code if necessary (I'm a developer), but I really want to know if there is another way before looking at the source code.
