Upgrading S Pen to a newer model: What's required? - Samsung Galaxy Note 9 Accessories

I recently got a replacement S pen from a Note20 to play around with, and am interested in trying to get the Bluetooth features working with my Note9 (the actual Pen stuff works as expected). Pairing through the app (as you might expect) times out and is unsuccessful so I've come here for potential options that somebody knowledgeable might be able to guide me towards.
Possible causes:
The S Pen "app" is not updated to support newer pens
The app in question seems to be "Air Command," which I can update through APKMirror. However, slightly newer versions still don't pair the new pen, and the latest version crashes if any pen is inserted into the device. Does anybody know what version came bundled with the Note20 so I can test that one?
Additionally, is there another "app" that I've missed that also needs to be updated?
The S Pen "app" depends on firmware blobs that the note9 never received
In this case I'm out of luck, but can somebody confirm if this is the case? I am no stranger to rooting my phone and getting a ROM with back-ported features, as long as said ROM exists on the N960U1.
The S Pen I have is somehow a gimped version of the real one
While the pen I got was labeled "Generic," it seems to be crafted as well as an official pen can get, and I see no way to confirm it has the correct hardware without just snapping it in half, or buying a note20 to test it there.
Thanks again in advance

Network reset.
Clear system cache.
The app must support the bt spen.
Here's what Samsung says.
If that function is supported spens can be a bit twitchy at first initialization or if not used for a while. Make sure it's charging to 100%, that's the first initialization hurdle to overcome if it's being difficult. Play with it...

I've done both resets, and will see how much the pen charges within an hour (though the pen is advertised to get 80% of its charge in a minute...)
I hope I've made it clear in the OP, but the new pen I'm trying to connect is not the Note9 pen, but a newer Note20 pen in order to try to take advantage of its newer bluetooth features (which, in theory but not in practice, only requires a bluetooth connection).

As I recall the newer features that first appeared on the N10+ aren't available on the N9. Can't find the article that describes the differences though.
Pick up a N10+ if you want, night and day performance difference. Less so with the N20U going forward, in fact a step backward with efficiency and display color/gamma rendering.
Color calibration and rendering take a hit with the variable rate displays; they are extremely hard to color calibrate accurately.

I have taken a look into the Air Command .apk and found some classes that look like they control the S pen features (they are named as drivers, so its probably that regardless). I will be attempting to simply splice the drivers from a newer device into the `crown` folder and hope the only reason Samsung never tried was not because it was impossible in software.

Apologies for the bump
After doing a bunch of string renaming and rebuilding the apk with the new drivers spliced in, it is very apparent that to actually test the changes I would either need a rooted device, or a way to sign the apk as if I were Samsung myself. If neither of those are possible, then it would be impossible to get an N960U1 with an S Pen newer than the Note9's stylus.
Further questions that could potentially be researched:
If the latest Air Command seems to be incompatible with the Note9 (crashes if any pen is inserted into the device), then why do the Crown files still exist in the apk?
(this thread effectively dies here)

Google it, don't hack what doesn't need a hack.
It may require the latest firmware upgrade and updates to work but it appears the N9 does indeed support it. The spen needs to be compatible with the N9 as well.
This improvement was probably added sometime after 2019...

The S Pen on the Note9 (Crown) has always supported the Remote feature, however the Note10 (Davinci) and newer have gesture support built into the pen. I have been attempting to backport the gesture support to get my new pen to work, however it looks like the driverset will forever be separated unless a way to update a Samsung system APK without root exists.
If I do come back to this I will try to see if this entire driver can be run in userspace, then write an app accordingly

TNT 3588 Enhancement Pack: Gapps with nVidia Drivers

Hello,
I've had my GTab for quite awhile now and have tried quite a few custom ROMs. Some I liked a lot and some I didn't. Finally had to stick with TNT 3588 because on all the custom ROMs debugging was automatically enabled and every time I would connect via USB it would crash my laptop. It differs for everyone.
So I broke open a couple of ROMs, supplements and Gapps (google apps) I liked and cherry picked until I put together a stable enhancement package of the following:
Google Apps plus Google Market
Angry Birds
GMail
Google Services Framework
Live Wallpaper
Live Wallpaper picker
Maps
Street
Vending
Visualization Wallpaper
Voice Search
Youtube
System Framework
Google Android Maps
nvidia Display
nvidia graphics
The nvidia display/drivers were critical to getting rid of some of the bad viewing angles. My screen is incredible. This package allows you to still receive VS updates however you can access google market and connect usb as normal. Does not take away the original TNT stock - contacts, gallery, calendar, weather, etc. You can load AW launcher or Launcher Pro and all other apps with some improvements including Flash 10.2. Youtube runs best in browser for me. However, the newer "stand-alone" version will work too.
This is basically a 3588 "Enhancement Pack"
Run your updater to update to 3588 if you are not already running it and then...
Install clockwork mod 8 (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1008245&highlight=clockwork+mod)
Hold in power button while pressing up volume key to you see loading recovery kernel, let go, rock volume down, up, until you get into clockwork mod.
It should say at the top of the screen ClockworkMod Recovery 0.8.
From clockwork mod 8, use volume up key to go down the list until you see
-mounts and storage
then hit your home key (the little house under the search symbol on the upper right-hand side of GTab)
-mount /system hit home key again to unmount
Then move down once more and press volume up key to go to
-mount /data, again hit home key to unmount
Next, go down to the last icon on GTab, the arrow key, to return to first menu to
Find (4th down from reboot option)
-install zip from sdcard, hit home key, hit volume up once more to
-choose zip from sdcard, hit home key again
Find the folder from the file listing you put the file in. (It helps if you create a folder beforehand for all your ROMs or xda files in one folder so you can easily pan down the list having all files in one place).
Go to in your folder, hit the home key, and let the file run.
TNT 3588 Gapps nVidia Drivers download here
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?my4ohg6afnl12p3
Afterwards return to the first menu in clockwork mod by pushing the arrow key, the last key on the upper right-hand side of GTab, until you see -reboot system now. Use volume up key, go down two lines to
-wipe data/factory reset hit home key again, let run until it goes back to the clockwork mod
Then
-reboot system now menu and hit home key to reboot.
Special Note: You will have to run the market fix. First sign into market using your info, completely finish that process. You should see some apps. Go to settings, applications, system applications, Google Services Framework-force stop, clear data. Market-force stop, clear data, exit and reboot. Sometimes you have to reboot twice, but, it worked on the first try for me.
Re-open and use. This isn't the newer version, but, it does give you access to all the apps, only difference is GUI. The other version was problematic in this enhancement pack.
This Enhancement Pack is for those who may want to ease into modifying their GTab or who may want to keep the Viewsonic Stock OS until VS issues another update. Plus, have access to Android Market and Nvidia display enhancement & drivers.
As with all ROMs, supplements, enhancements, firmware or modifications, use at your own risk, should not cause any problems unless you did something terribly wrong.

Call me skeptical, but how can drivers of any kind improve the viewing angles? I was under the impression that the capacitive layer on the screen is what causes the viewing angle problem. Am I missing something?

Good question but I stated display & nvidia drivers. The drivers are for the tegra 2 . And those improved the overall system.
Has anyone tried this?
Also, Where did you get the drivers from? Would you be so kind and provide us with a video showing off how the screen was improved?
I think this is going to be exactly what I'm looking for. Going to to try it out as soon as my tab gets in.

Well, technically, your post stated that the drivers improved the viewing angles. I'm just wondering how they do that since the viewing angle problem isn't bad because of the software...it's the screen itself.

First of all, the drivers came from the devs on this site. I've tried quite a few supplements, ROMs and enhancement packs TNT 2.4, 3.14, 4.23, 4.24, 4.25 and Gapps xtra. The last two 4.24 and 4.25 was extremely fluid. Inside the 4.24 was a system/framework folder and inside the framework folder were these two files: com.nvidia.display & com.nvidia.graphics.
I cannot use the other ROMs because of the auto debugging permanently left on which crashes my laptop which I've only had a about 2-3 months and it is painful to see it go down. So I noticed when I ran 4.24 marked overall improvement with G Tab. While everyone else is saying they see issues with the screen I'm saying I don't. I have to really have it at an odd angle I wouldn't normally view anything at to see distortion. My screen is popping, mostly eye candy. I have a 3D LED laptop display and use both simultaneous and notice very little difference between the two displays. Both have nvidia chips.
Some on this website (see the why is everyone complaining about viewing angle thread) say that it is possible those who got a later model of GTAB (2011 oppose to 2010) might have gotten one with a improved screen. I can not answer that you will have to ask Viewsonic.
Try the enhancement and tell me what you think. That's all I can say too you, and you can ask the devs why they put those two files in that ROM and what purpose they think they serve. Most times manufacturers (since they say nvidia) issue drivers, firmware and such for purpose of improvement.
Is it possible to install this update by using standard recovery?
I like the classic stock 3588 interface. I would like to get market and maps.
Could you let me know if these updates can be installed by using standard recovery.
Edirector,
I vaguely remember roebeet et al were talking about increasing framerate or something like that, and I'm pretty sure that tweak made it into some of the newer ROMs, so maybe that's why you're seeing improvement?

def gonna think about this. Kind of a newbie and still very excited for my GTab from Woot. But this doesnt seem to bad. I hope there is some sort of screen update for the 2011 Gtabs. that would be great!

Take it up with the developers of this site, no just joking. It works I'm using it. Also, I ran the package by Roebeet before I posted it. He stated it was an enhancement pack. All it is allowing you to do is keep the VS stock, plus, add market and the nvidia drivers, nothing more, or, nothing less. You can still get your updates from VS. Perhaps, it is not for you. That is Ok but there are a lot of upcoming new GTab owners who want to mod, but maybe not totally stray from the stock OS or ease into it.

I'm using it now and I can install apps from google market from the app or browser. I've bought a few, both ways. All the build props and such were there, they are from the site devs. I ran the package by Roebeet before posting.
Just trying to make it easy on the new GTab owners not more difficult. I went through serious trial and error so I know how that feels, also, I have basic computer skills A+ Certification. Mainly with computers the hardware and software need to work in concert. If you listen to this enhancement package you can hear the music playing sweetly. lol

I haven't played around wth this pack yet, but you shouldn't require a build.prop change (I think). I make the following changes in the build.prop, Market related:
1- the mahimahi change (to add more apps)
2- the T-Mobile change (again, to add more apps)
3- The setupwizard Disable.
That last one is the only one I might have to test - if you do a data wipe, the SetupWizard will likely pop up. I'm not sure if it will actually work or get stuck at the first screen - honestly, I disabled it so long ago that I don't recall anymore. Too many tablets and mods.
OK, my GTAB is a dev unit so it's always getting flashed. So I looked it over.... kind of strange being a user for once!
It's exactly as stated - an "Enhancement Pack" for build 3588. It has the additional apps and drivers mentioned. I'm not sure where the Nvidia drivers originated, but they are not from build 3991.
Market works. Solid instructions there.
No standard recovery, as the updater-script is written in such a way that only clockworkmod can run it (I tried standard recovery first). My only concern there is my usual nervousness with having clockworkmod for future patching.
Nenamark scores are in the 28fps range
Quandrant is ~1800
(those match up with 3588 stock norms, tmk)
Angry Birds causes an FC (that's normal when you try to drop it in /system)
Not rooted (edirector never claimed that it was, but just be aware of that)
Overall, a good first try imo and thanks for doing this! Suggestions: Angry Birds should be removed since it can't live in /system, and although the Nivdia drivers were altered I don't personally see a difference anywhere. I know my screen angles like the back of my hand by now and they look the same to me, post-installation.
Thanks again! If anyone wants just the Market and Gmail / Maps / YouTube, this is a good firmware to use. And the lack of a build.prop is a good thing - it could conceivably run on older ROMs like 3389 (not tested of course, so stress the "could" part). Future ROMs we obviously don't know about, yet.

So did you walk through the rest of the package and check it out? I really didn't alter from what you were offering just included the nvidia drivers with gapp. Some of those xtra programs in the gapp were causing conflicts so I took it down to bare bones.
I liked what you did with TNT 4.25 that was really smooth until I connected the usb cable from my laptop to GTab and crashed it. I gave away my old equipment. Might have to pick up a test dummy on the cheap off ebay for such purposes. I like using the different ROMs. But since I am planning on buying another tab with a different operating system no point in buying another GTab. Thanks, for checking it out!

I updated my dup post, above yours.
I saw some of the early responses so I wanted to put in my two cents -- I hope I wasn't going over the line, I tried to review it as a any other user. It's surprisingly hard to do that, which is quite bizarre in itself.

When you hit the google market through the app it will automatically recognize it and ask you to update it. You are correct about angry birds. So you don't have to remove it, if you don't want to, just go to the market app and let it do the work.
Thanks, for the encouragement. It's your work essentially, I just mixed a straight cocktail no tonic mix. Some of us are learning. Also, I didn't think to put cwm in there, because I usually side-load it on after flashing. A very good point and noted.
Edit/ answered my own question, nice write up!
How do I include the Google Calender with this pack? Already have the pack installed, then realized the Calender was missing. Thanks.

GooApple V5 issues list

Hello everyone!
First of all sorry for my bad English. I represent smartphones distributor from Kiev, Ukraine. We have contacted with GooApple sales director and have got GooApple V5 sample phone for tests before bulk orders.
All I can say: it's just not ready for international market at the moment and unfortunately they are not very much interested in positive firmware or hardware changes.
They have made firmware ios_11.12.08 for our last recall but non of our issues have been resolved + one added: it doesn't react on first home button push after lock screen, it only shows unlock screen after the second home button push or fast twice push.
Here is our issues list:
Phone's battery draining, runs out too fast!!! After full charge it runs out 75% battery life for 4 hours of usage: 1 call during 5 min., video watch during 8 min., music during 6 min, looking thought photos during 5 min., taking 3 pictures with the camera. 1,5 hour is just for walkthrough over the interface, settings, lock/unlock. 3,5 min. video takes about 5-6% of battery life. And it's without any gaming, internet surfing, making videos. Other time it's just holding.
Screen has some lightness flickering. Backlight blinking, flashing a little bit from the sides and left top corner.
Connect button (in putting Wi-Fi password mode) doesn't work. Just can't connect to any locked Wi-Fi network.
Bad Wi-Fi catch signal even with a close to phone router.
Doesn't remember icons location on springboard bar after moving around and reboot the phone.
Showing the last called phone number in background when sending USSD commands (checking balance or any anything else).
The input keyboard should be the same as iOS with working English and Russian (now it doesn't work) and customization ability in the General folder in Settings.
Booting animation should be the same as iOS with Apple logo only.
Creating folders (put in and put out icons) and moving icons around doesn't work properly.
The font in Calendar, Time, Dial is not the same as iOS.
The sim card pin code enter should be the same as iOS.
How to delete apps like Call Log, PowerOff... chinese QQ and others?
Reminders, Maps, Weather Stocks iReader apps should be in English.
Browser app should be renamed to Safari.
Gallery app should be renamed to Photos.
Phone key at dialpad should be renamed to Keypad.
Must speed up fake iOS usage response, performance.
Must speed up screen rotation/orientation response.
Must replace red ! (exclamation) to the Sending progress bar when sending messages/SMS.
Must replace chinese word to english word Call at the dial pad.
Make possibility of adding your own ringtones in the Settings.
Make double tap or pres hold the home button for multitask, running apps view like on iOS with appear at the bottom of the screen.
Make possibility of completely close/kill apps taking up memory and running in the background.
Make dialing numbers sound quieter (it's set to max by default).
Make lock/unlock sound quieter (it's set to max by default but should be possible to customize).
Make full-screen camera mode when taking photos.
Correct + - add sound mode when playing video, music (quiet sound from 2 to 6 bars and after 6 bars it's big increase in sound).
Remake Videos app (it should redirect/open phone's gallery instead of SDcard content).
Remake YouTube app (it should be in English or redirect/open youtube.com).
WLAN folder in Settings should be renamed to Wi-Fi.
Phone warms up when gaming, talking, videos.
It doesn't recognize sim card enter when ON.
Word Wednesday comes out of the Calendar app icon.
Power On/Off button dangles, swing around with sound.
Upper background part can be seen when charging.
While start pinching any picture from the center it zooms in with imprecision to the side of the picture.
Battery life doesn't shows properly on lock screen (it shows all empty when screen corner shows less of 20% battery life).
It Reboots by itself few times during the day when locking the screen.
If you know any other issues please add them by numbers 39, 40....
Or if you have solutions for any of the issues please also add it by the 1-38 numbers.
I hope we can make it better together!
Possible Solutions to Gooapple V5 issues.
Generally speaking, I don't think that all these reasons are real for every V5 phone around. Did you wipe out every data BEFORE flashing the new rom? If not, certain applications may have been running multiple times (i.e.: Maps in my case when I did that). I am using the android rom (not the iOS one) and I have not all these problems whatsoever.
Possible solutions:
1. Try and see if you have data enabled or GPS is on. This device has a hardcoded (R) Roaming on (i.e. you can't turn it off) plus it's not (yet) capable of 3G data. Turn both of them off while not needing them helps A LOT.
2. Not an issue here with newest android build; maybe your screen has issues. I've had some friends with original iPhones having the same flickering as yours. Turned out to be their retina display.
3. Not true. I'm connecting on both my wifi spots at home both Wep and WAP/PSK. Wifi is low powered though and need you to be NEAR the wifi router / spot (see below).
4. True! Just 5 meters away and a mid-wall makes the difference. They really need to boost their receiver.
5.Try reinstalling AFTER you've made a complete wipe data/factory reset. THEN install the rom. This might fix the issue.
6.I'd really like to see a list of USSD commands if you have one available for this phone... (pm me??? )
7.Same for Greek keyboard. I've overcame the problem by installing Greek Input Method from the market.
8.Heh. +1
9.It works for me for both android and iOS roms.
10,11.I agree.
12.You'll have to be 'root' to do so. The only way I've found to do so is the program superoneclick (google it). After rooting the V5, download from market 'Root Uninstaller'. Works perfectly even with the 'protected apps' like the one you mentioned. I know that you don't have 'market' on iOS rom so here's what I did:
I've had a factory reset first, then installed Android rom and THEN the iOS rom. I've also installed a program called 'Go Launcer EX'. This pops up when unlocking the device asking you what launcher you prefer, this way you have the best of both worlds.
13-16: Agree.
17 & 18: The problem is the retina display with the slow (relatively) 650MHz MTK6573 processor. The G3 (previous model) had a smaller screen that the cpu was able to handle. On android rom things are better though...
19 & 20: Agree.
21: On android you can do so by adding your custom ringtones on a folder called /alarms, /ringtones etc on your sd card. Should work for us too (didn't try it yet).
22. Agree.
23. I am using an app from market called: Advanced Task Manager does the trick.
24-31. Agree.
32. I didn't go that far!!! I guess you're right.
33 & 34. Yep.
35 & 36. I haven't got such a problem. Consider the retina screen of yours has a problem / issue?
37&38. Nope. Works alright here.
Finally another issue with no solution:
39. GPS lock. The GPS won't operate properly in EU (Greece) where I live. Takes forever to find satellites and it won't lock to a fix point even if you wait 10 mins. This is what I'm after right now and if I have a proper solution I'll post it here.
Thanks for putting up this thread Cyber_dude. If you need anything I'll be more than glad to help!
Thanks for your reply.
We have talked with GooApple for about a week now and sure I have made all needed such as wipe data before firmware update. That's because you are basically using Android ROM. Customers buying phones like this one because they just want iPhone for less and want everybody else think they got an iPhone. So using Android on any iPhone replica is just not right. It should run fake iOS and should be at least 60% of the original one. This phone costs $300 icnl. shipping at resellers (price of used iPhone 4 on eBay) and I think user interface should be well polished and flawless for that money.
Yes, Maps on last gooapple_ios_11.12.08 works in English now. But after resolving one problem they made two others, like it doesn't react on first home button push after lock screen, it only shows unlock screen after the second home button push or fast twice push.
1. That's not a solution! Sure I have turned everything like wi-fi, gps... off. But customers want it to be fully functional phone, without thinking: "ohh., have I turned my phone's wi-fi and gps off to kepp the battery alive?" It's shouldn't be like that!
They have you used so low capacity 1050mAh battery. (but we think it's even less). The original iPhone's has 1420mAh. And there are even 2200-2430mAh on the market today. They have changed screen, ram, cpu but keep the same battery. It's just stupid. And it's smaller then iPhone's battery so you just can't replace it. It works maximum up to 3 hours in active usage mode without gaming. (with full brightness on, because turning it less on this screen is just sacrilege).
That's they have answered about that: "when making a phone, we have to consider a lot of things, especially the cost, when everything is as great as iphone 4, the price will be too..."
2. Yes, it's old issue, it resolves after reinstall.
3. It's true. It works on you because your wep password is large then 8 characters. It doesn't work with less passwords like mac or iPhone.
5. Yes, new firmware resolved that.
6. I mean USSD commands for checking balance.
But here is a command to enter EngineerMode: *#67876#*
7. Stock keyboard is a crap. I use Smart Keyboard Pro.
8. I can change robot with apple booting animation but can't change gooapple name at the beginning. I think it's logo.img at the rom zip file. I have tried to delete it and make other changes to the rom but can't sign it. It's always shows sign error at the install.
9. It works but it works very-very badly. Then you are trying to move icon to other position it creates a folder with other icon, it's so annoying.
12. I have also made the root with the SuperOneClick. And delete Chinese apps with Root Explorer.
Thanks for Go Launcer EX advise. What else it can help us with?
17 & 18. They used MTK6513 it's cuted MTK6573 without 3G. It's not the best one anyway.
21. Yes, I also want to try to add custom ringtone to media directory folder.
23. Yes, I also use Advanced Task Killer Pro on gooapple_ios_11.11.30 but they have added double tap home button like iPhone to kill running apps on gooapple_ios_11.12.08
35 & 36. These issues are real and haven't resolved on new roms. That's not screen problem, I can make a screenshot if needed.
37. This one is also real. Can also make a screenshot.
38. Haven't seen this issue on gooapple_ios_11.11.30
39. Maybe you should try to test it in EngineerMode Have you tried to use any other GPS third-party application?
I didn't know about this issue because I haven't tried GPS, no need with this battery.
Do you know how to replace chinese word (Call) to english word Call at the dial pad? Because it's immediately catches the eye when using. I have decompiled the Phone.apk with APK Edit program but all image files are normal over where, chinese word is not an image file. I don't know how to change it.
Just lets keep this thread go by adding new issues and how to solutions.
Got my V5 about 2 weeks ago. Been playing with it for a while - tried both the newer roms and currently running the ios version that is made available about 10 days ago. Been working fine for me, except I may gps is very slow (can take up to 10 minutes for it to find me), and the built in FM Transmitter does not work. I also have various chinese apps which I was not able to delete. I will try the latest rom to see what improvemements it has.
Question, how did you root the phone? I downloaded superoneclick, but keep getting hung on the "waiting for device". I have usb debuggin on, and tried it both with "usb connect" on and off (the setting in the phone to establish a usb connection to a PC). Instead of using this "usb connect" feature, do I need to download some type of usb driver for this phone? If so, can you provide details? I've tried various usb drivers for MT6513 but nothing yet works - even tried something called PDANet which installed some type of software oin the phone and said it was connected, but still the superoneclick failed. Any ideas?
Oh, by the way I found a vending.apk that works on the ios rom. See link below
http://www.mediafire.com/?khpvzmzwwaqyxdm
Thanks
I have uploaded the drivers for GooApple V5, here is the link: http://www.mediafire.com/?h6hr1ckrf3sc7cj
How to root your GooApple V5:
Make sure you use Win XP.
Download drivers file from the link above and unzip it.
Phone Settings -> Applications -> Unknown sources, on
Phone Settings -> Applications -> Development -> USB debugging, on
Phone Settings -> Applications -> Development -> to keep awake, on
Phone Settings -> Applications -> Development -> Allow analog location, on
Connect the data cable, turn on USB storage in the phone.
In the Windows Device Manager (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Device_Manager) find your phone, open properties and install or update the drivers from the unzipped folder.
Reboot your computer.
Now download the SuperOneClick from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682 If you run XP, install .NET Framework v2.0 or above.
Shut down your antivirus/firewall.
Turn off USB storage in the phone. Make sure you do not mount the sd card.
Run the SuperOneClick BOOT process. If it's not success from the first time try it again.
After that install the Root Explorer to your phone, go system/app, push Mount R/W button and delete any app you want.
Thanks for the vending.apk, here are also some tips for it: http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-install-new-android-market-2-2-6-on-your-device/
Cyber_Dude, thanks for the engineering mode code. You've done a nice job on the rooting info. Just for the story: I've done it on W7, 32bit and worked alright too. Newest superoneclick has the ability to forcibly ask for Admin privileges. Drivers have to be installed manually though.
I've found out into the Engineering menu that there's a CPU Frequency test that reports a high of 806MHz. THAT would be awesome to have when needed. Do you have any *working* utility that is able to over clock the MTK6573 CPU of it? I've tried some from the market but with no luck whatsoever.
Some info on the WiFi boosting would be helpful too. I've been digging into the /etc directory and found out several conf files that may, or may not do the job. I'd rather not alter the values on my own though...
Ah, finally another addition:
There seems to be an issue importing/exporting my contacts from the phone to google.com. Plus the Account and Sync options on the settings menu isn't reporting the respective field (i.e.: only Picassa, books and gmail is able to sync. Contacts is not on the list).
Thanks.
Cyber_dude - thanks for the rooting details. Got my V5 rooted today, and it worked from my vista laptop (didn't need a xp PC). I deleted the 9 chinese apps no problem including the chinese market app.
The vending.apk I provided works whether you root or not - however now that I'm rooted I will keep your instructions in mind if I want to upgrade to a different market version.
I'm still on the Dec1/2011 ios rom - anyone know what the newer ios rom (Dec10/2011) has to offer? I have tons of apps and settings personalized, so I'm not really wanting to wipe the phone to load the latest ios rom unless I know it will have some improvements.
Only problems I still have, which I would appreciate feedback on, are:
1) gps is very slow to find my location (can take up to 30 minutes). Funy thing is that as I scroll on the map it refreshes fast, and I can find addresses and streets, but it just can not find my location?
2) ther built in FM Transmitter does not work - would love to get this working since I do not have bluetooth stereo in the car. FYI - found other fmtransmiiter.apk apps on the net - can I just replace my existing same app on systems/bin to make it work?
Thanks
Have you tried it with the 'new' Android UI ROM? How does it perform? I'd really like to see some videos - youtube only has 13 and I've seen them all ..

1) Same thing here. From the data sheet (from Mediatek) of the MTK6573 (which this phone has) the update location should be as fast as 10ms (that's 1/100 of a second) so something is DEFINITELY wrong.
2) I think you'll have to 'sign' it somehow. There are some apps that are supposed to provide 'signed' apps but never got to work with one; so I have no experience.
Cheers
macsga, DanADaMan, you are welcome.
I think cpu overclocking is not in time now and it also can make even worse. But we'll be glad if you can find any good, stable working app for that and test it. The only thing need to be overclocked now is the iOS UI, it should have to be polished well to match the original one.
For WiFi boosting, have you tried Wifi Fixer or Wifi Analyzer, you can change your WiFi channels with it.
GPS chipset is very bad. It's just a copy, fake phone, so they have used the cheapest hardware parts for it, we should reconcile to it. Unless they somehow fix it in new firmware, but I don't think it's gonna happen in near future. The main market for this phone is China, so they don't hasten with any international changes. As GooApple sales director said to me: "we sold more then 500pcs aday, should this problem happend to every phone, i think all the phone should return to us". So maybe chinese people are just not as demanding as we are, and they are happy with the phone? Anyway, I think with a good administrative force all listed issues can be resolved in just one week.
By the way, as I know they are planning to produce new phone in January with the 3G support. No info about any other new hardware at the moment.
Meantime we have to add new issues to the list:
39. GPS is very slow to find my location (can take up to 30 minutes).
40. Built in FM Transmitter does not work.
41. Importing/exporting my contacts from the phone to google.com. Plus the Account and Sync options on the settings menu isn't reporting the respective field (i.e.: only Picassa, books and gmail is able to sync. Contacts is not on the list).
42. In last gooapple_ios_11.12.08 firmware it doesn't react on first home button push after lock screen, it only shows unlock screen after the second home button push or fast twice push.
Updates in the last gooapple_ios_11.12.08 firmware:
Increase in task manager.
Blocking state to increase unread text message reminder.
Debug chinese QQ picture upside down.
Some Google applications added (en maps, gmail, voice..)
Task Manager.
Standby SMS prompts.
Double-click the home button shows running/standby apps and kill possibility like in original iOS.
Plus issue 42 added.
I haven't tried all new features in gooapple_ios_11.12.08 I don't want to use it because of the 42 issue. Now I'm using previous gooapple_ios_11.11.30 version. If anyone already installed and running the gooapple_ios_11.12.08 please give us your feedback.
DanADaMan, maybe you should try to make the data backup in stock recovery mode first and install firmware update after that? Maybe this should keep all your apps in and give you the new firmware? (haven't tried by myself)
jontelang, Sure, Android UI works much better with it, but I personally don't want to use it on this phone, it would be too simple and means you gave up making iOS UI ROM better.
As a side note, I've noticed that the phone is able to provide extraordinary 2D & 3D performance. I don't agree with the comment "It's just a copy, fake phone, so they have used the cheapest hardware parts for it, we should reconcile to it." you posted earlier Cyber_Dude, because I've seen cheap devices and this is nothing like it.
I do believe that the dev team has issues supporting the phone chipset due to the novelty that presents at the current time. This processor came out only at the end of June 2011 (fairly new).
News about MTK MT6573 Processor
Monday, June 13, 2011 3:25:26 AM America/Los_Angeles
Since the release MTK MT6516 processor, there is lots of Android phones in the market, which support GSM network and dual SIM card smartphone. But later, when Qualcomm, Broadcom and other smartphone processor manufacturer access into the field, mtk's dimmed. MTK MT6573 is the only hope in the future.
The end of June, 2011, we will share the latest trends with you, with the following new star.
Time: the first smartphone with MT6573 processor has been assembled, the major integrators, solution providers have had contact with, the reaction generally very good, have begun to prepare the relevant program models. As far as know, next month the first smartphone with MT6573 processor will unveiled.
Performance: As MT6573 is positioned in the low-end smartphone, we should not expect performance of deification, but the actual test performance to facilitate more than Qualcomm MSM7227, while MT6573 with the 3D acceleration in the multimedia DSP will give you a surprise. Currently sent to the integrators, solution providers of 3G features are still several prototype debugging.
Programs: MT6573 and MT6516 share same pins, and the both chips can be exchange without any hardware change, this will save cost on design for smartphone manufacturers.

macsga, But have you test it side by side with the iPhone 4 (not talking about 4S)?
Sure if comparing with other copies it's a winner. It's the best choice if you want to buy an iPhone replica for the price of the used iPhone 4 and you're not too picky. But it's a huge contrast with the original iPhone 4 UI performance, speed and hardware. And at the present time it's not totally ready for the wide international market due to the all listed issues. That's why I have started this thread, all together we can make it better. Unfortunately GooApple's dev team/engineers do nothing for it, local market and the new phone's version is their main goal at the moment. I know that because I've contacted with the GooApple sales director for the last 3 weeks.
As I have posted before they used MTK6513 it's cut MTK6573 without 3G support. It's good but not the best one. Anyway CPU is not the main problem of GooApple V5. The low capacity battery is much bigger failure. The android-sale.com is just a reseller, they can write anything they want to sell the phones more efficiently.
Hehe, I do have a 4s and (you're right) side by side there's nothing like it. That's why I gave up on iOS UI and turned to the android native one. I do believe that it's a perfect android testbed though. And for 230 Eur (retail price) that the 32Gb model cost me; well I can't really complain.
So; I totally agree! Let's try and make it better
The UI might be faster if you lower the resolution (i.e.: draw @ 480x320 and not the retina native resolution this phone has). It's zoom capabilities should cover the gap and reduce choppiness. Of course, this is just a crazy thought of mine...
macsga, Where have you got it for 230 EURO for 32GB? Official resellers like android-sale.com and rofen.net selling 32GB model for $319.99 (245 EURO) without shipping cost.
How could you lower the resolution? And why? If you want lower resolution you just should buy cheaper GooApple 3G version and it has faster UI response: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WqAevweocKs

I got it before the EUR/USD was at 1/1.29 which is what you just calculated . The lower resolution (magnified) would in my opinion give the fast and smooth feeling the 3G has.
As per why I didn't go for the 3G, I did not, because of the retina display the V5 has. The official replacement for a retina display from Apple goes up to 390EUR+pnp, where I got the whole phone for 230 (OK plus 11$ shipping). In the meanwhile I have an android phone to play with (apart from my 4s). Fair deal.
I just wiped the phone and tried to load the ios 12-08-11 rom. Got an error something about not being a signed rom. I reinstalled the ios 12-01-11 ios rom no problem.
Anyone else have problems loading the latest ios rom?
Thanks
is this real?
i have heard that the Gooapple v5 is very good, and it is the same display as the real iphone 4, and can exchange with the iphone 4 display, does this ture?

Yes, it's real. You can watch exchanging one another, on youtube here:

The flickering at the corners of the screen is annoying on mine, has this developed from the latest ROM or did you guys see it in previous? I've only had it a few days and updated straight away. I've resorted to the android UI cos the IOS one was sluggish but am more than happy to swap back to help?!
What I did find was GTA III kills this phone. On launch the intro plays but as the game launches the screen goes black and the phone will not respond to any button pressing for an hour, then I think it kills the process and the phone comes back. Just don't try, unless someone can tell me otherwise?
Mine responds on one click of the home button right now but Wireless is pants and so is GPS!
---------- Post added at 09:48 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:35 PM ----------
How do I tell if I loaded 2011-12-08 or 2011-12-11?
I downloaded them on the 15th and loaded the Android one without any complaints of it being unsigned? Did it over the top of the version it came with though so not fresh install...
EDIT:
Thought it was worth adding how to get into engineers menu:
Dial “*#67876#*”
Is there a way to turn WiFi Tx from 20 to 40 or even more?
I need to root mine still
I never noticed flickering and I have to say that the latest 'iOS' rom is a bit faster on my device resulting in a rather good imitation while the previous was very choppy.
The only drawback is that the UI crashes every now and then. I do like the 'long press' function of the home button that is able to kill apps in the 'official' iOS mode plus I think for the 1st time since I owned this phone that I like more the iOS UI to the android one.
I do have to offer a couple of tips that I found through my xda search:
1. Using a program like Root Explorer (root) you may want to make the following directories as Read Only: /data/tombstones and /data/system/dropbox
This has as a result, that the phone won't be able to log into the main phone memory thus trimming down your available space.
2. *IF* you're using the iOS UI version of the rom you can safely(?) remove the following apps (I state them as bloatware) via Root Uninstaller (root):
-QQ input method and keyboard
-Chinese market
-Chinese Youtube (Yuku)
-Chinese Maps
-Chinese Weather (3 entries, remove all three)
-Chinese iBooks (Google books does the job)
3. Add the following app: Locale Select from the Market and choose your language of choice.
4. If you search the xda site you will be able to find signed Google Apps that (most of them) work with this phone.
Ah, one last thing: I found the best player for playing p0r... erm, Movies, MoboPlayer with the additional ArmV7VFP3 plugin. Supports almost every codec and srt file out there and respective char encodings. Please ignore the message: This program is not compatible with your device. Works like a charm, I swear.
Cheers.

Google Wallet

So the Galaxy Nexus guys got Wallet working on their phone with just an .Apk. I installed the .apk and it installed but FCed every time I tried to run it with NFC enabled. I was hoping someone more talented than me would be able to make it work for us.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1365360
[APP] Google Wallet (Flash: 1.1-R41v8, APK: 1.1-R41v8) [18/12/2011]
I'm running the taste of ics from and tried side loading the apk today. All I got was a black screen.
i installed the apk and when the app started up i got an error saying my version of android was not supported (2.3.5) and then a second error saying that my device is not supported. Im thinking that maybe if i installed a 2.3.6 rom and then modified my build.prop to fake my device as a sprint nexus s, maybe that would trick the app into working? The rom will need to have nfc enable of course too. Anyone know of a good 2.3.6 rom with nfc?
I'm running TPCv2 with DaG.3 kernel and didn't get any errors when installing it. The app came up and said NFC needed to be enabled and when I did that it FCed. But otherwise it didn't FC or error.

Same here. Installed fine and asked to enable NFC in settings. Once enabled though, Wallet forced closed. Running Quikwiz 1.0.3
I'm curious if changing build.prop to what the galaxy nexus is would fix the issue.
I would be eternally grateful if a dev were able to get this working for us.
I got the same result. Launched at first to tell me NFC needed to be enabled, but after I enabled it, I got force closes. Running QuickWiz 1.0.3
Its sounds like we are missing some important libraries that are required for wallet to talk to the NFC hardware. I noticed that the process for the nexus includes adding another JAR and APK which look like they add additional NFC functionality. Has anyone tried going thru the install process listed on this thread?

Instructions in that thread basically just say install the .apk. I just tried it again with the same result. With NFC enabled, it FCs when trying to load. When NFC is NOT enabled, it starts up and initializes and then says NFC needs to be turned on. When I do that, it FCs.
right, i was talking specifically about the section below that where it talks about installing NFC extras via a command line.
Has anyone looked in their logs to see if they can find a stack trace after a FC happens? It may give a hint as to what we are missing. I dont get the same errors on my phone so my logs aren't useful.

I've seen a couple posts regarding getting Google Wallet to work (and hopefully I'm not being redundant with this post). I've had Google Wallet working on my own 2.3.5 source ROM for quite some time now and I figured I'd share what got it working for me. As a matter of disclosure, I do have the 4G, but I haven't seen anything in the code that would give reason for why this wouldn't work.
While I'm able to build a ROM, I for some reason, don't know how to put together a flashable update. Maybe somebody with a little more know-how can piece this together and try it out, or at least tell me I'm wrong.
Files needed from the GWK74 ROM:
system/etc/permissions/com.google.android.nfc_extras.xml
(I just added the permission entry to the existing com.android.nfc_extras.xml file instead to keep the clutter down).
system/framework/com.android.nfc_extras.jar
The version in the GWK74 ROM contains code that has yet to be released, since korg is down and all. The extra file has something to do with NFC emulation, but I've only glanced at it, so I really couldn't tell you what it does.
system/app/Wallet.apk
Obviously.
Here's the catch: The Wallet app requires permissions from Nfc.apk (NFCEE_ADMIN). By default, the Nfc.apk is signed with the "platform" key, but as long as these two files are signed with the same key, it will grant it the proper permissions to Wallet.apk no matter what key that may happen to be. Considering that Nfc.apk also requests other permissions from "platform" as well, certificate consistency would be advisable.
Hope this works out or at the very least, gets the ball rolling.

I suspect that the reason the ADK does not work on the Skyrocket is because the phones have different NFC chip. According to this post, the Galaxy Nexus has the NXP PN65N which contains an NFC controller as well as an embedded secure element (SmartMX) supporting both JavaCard as well as Mifare technology. The Galaxy S II (of which the Skyrocket is a variant) comes with the PN544 which does not have the embedded secure element. This could explain why NFC can be enabled on the Skyrocket (with a custom ROM) but it would FC the Wallet app. The SE (Secure Element) is needed to securely store transaction info and perform all the card emulation functions. Without it, the GW won't work. The app probably just check to see if a SE is available or not, and finding none, simply FC. Now it is possible to use the SIM as a SE but that would require a different SW.
It appears that folks were able to enable GW on the Nexus S, but I think it also sports the PN65N chip with SE. Can somebody confirm it?

I think I have found some support for my speculation. In a thread on Android Developer Google Group, Michael Roland explained the 3 different modes of NFC. In particular, the role of SE in the card emulation mode, supports my view expressed earlier, I've lifted the relevant paragraphs here:
So the card-emulation mode allows the emulation of a contactless smart
card (and not an NFC tag, although the smart card could *possibly* be
used as NFC tag). As applications like credit cards typically have high
security requirements, card emulation is not handled by the NFC device
itself (i.e. the application processor of an NFC-enabled mobile phone).
Instead, the NFC device has a dedicated hardware component (the
so-called Secure Element) that handles all the card emulation. (*)
(*) This is not entirely true, as some NFC controllers (like the
PN544) would theoretically allow the emulation of ISO/IEC
14443-4 contactless smart cards from the application processor.
Yet, I don't know of any NFC phone that makes this functionality
available to the user and I rather doubt that this will become
available on the Nexus S.
The Secure Element (SE) is typically a smart card itself. But instead of
a normal contact/contactless smart card interface it has a connection to
the NFC controller, which connects it to the NFC antenna.
The Nexus S has an integrated SE (a SmartMX combined into the same
package as the PN544 NFC controller). This SmartMX emulates a ISO/IEC
14443 (Type A) smart card and a MIFARE Classic card.
In addition to this integrated SE it is possible to use a special UICC
(also known as SIM card) that supports the Single Wire Protocol (which
is an interface designed for the communication between the NFC controller
and a UICC) as the SE.

I tried the newest version from the market and got a secure element error. I don't think we're going to get wallet support any time soon because our devices don't have a secure element.
Would it be possible to edit the build.prop to appear as a Nexus S or Galaxy Nexus GSM now to all it to work? It installed fine on my phone but now says my hardware isn't supported.

No because our phones lack a secure element. Physically lack. So no edits to the app will work until Google decides to update this specifically for phones without a secure element.

When I swipe one I get a force close on the nfc service.:-(
I tried skyicecream and buoyancy roms. fixed permissions. super clean install of rom. Thoughts?

Is there an app out there that can capture the s-pen input and make it a bluetooth input device or if there isnt how possible would it be to make one.
i want to add being able to use it as a graphics tablet for PC/MAC to its Rooted (or even unrooted) Features. the only way i can think how is a input hook on the device

There are a few options available for using your Note 10.1 as a graphics tablet (with varying degrees of success I might add) , however none that I know of that would take the tablet or s-pen input and turn it into bluetooth.
You didn't mention an OS so here are several options
GfxTablet
http://rfc2822.github.io/GfxTablet/
This is for GNU/Linux, but it's the best working method i've found so far. It lets you use your tablet as a graphics tablet, pressure sensitivity included.
S-Tablet

This is supposed to work on Windows, but I could never get it to work on my Win 7 x64 system. Others have reported success with it. Good luck using the website, as it's mostly in Korean.
Hope this helps you out. I personally ended up Dual Booting Windows and Linux in order to use the GfxTablet app, but whatever works best for you. I was looking for an excuse to install GNU/Linux anyway.
Well i guess its time to start working on an android solution then. any coders interested give me a shout

[Firefly] [ROCKCHIP] [ITX-3588J] "This device is not Google Play Protect certified"

I want to say that thanks to the help from @Nikhil I finally got the Google Play app set installed on my Firefly ITX-3588J ROCKCHIP RK3588 board's Android 12 stock image install. Except now there's one last little problem that's a bit different than everything I'd been having before here, and that's that it says:
This device isn't Play Protect certified.
Your device isn't certified to run Google apps or use Google services. Contact the device manufacturer or retailer and ask for a certified device.

And I can't use the Google Play Store to download the apps that I need that were the whole reason for putting it on in the first place (to get Chrome, ZOOM, and Linux Deploy especially).
What can be done about this? From what I gather, Google maintains a list of "blessed" devices and obviously this board (very new, not from a typical manufacturer, not your typical Android device i.e. a phone or tablet) is not there. Is there any way around this? I saw something about registering it in your Google Developer account (which I have one of), I tried that some time ago when I had a less than working Google Play installation (before the recent one which looks to be "100% proper", that one was crashing in weird ways in addition to giving this error), but it seems not to have taken and/or be remembered. The device is connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi but that's about it.
Is there any fix? I seem to be soooooo close now to finally having coaxed a usable system out of this board!

Yeah. It's not on the list of certified devices - which is hardly surprising to me given what it is.
ADD: I decided to try registering as a custom ROM.
ADD 2: I finished the custom ROM registration. The device is no longer giving pop up notifications that it is "not Play Protect certified", but Google Play still goes to - and now goes immediately (no log in prompt) to - its "This device is not Play Protect certified" error screen. What's going on?
ADD 3: I managed to get it to work. The trick was to go to System > Apps and clear cache and user data for both Google Play and Google Play services. That reset everything and now it goes! Thanks for your help.
I am thinking of purchasing one. Where are you at with yours @Shimmy99 ?
Have you been able to download everything you wanted? Are you using a touchscreen?
Thanks ahead of time.

Works great as an Android 12 machine. Ubuntu is proving much less trivial to get working, however, chiefly due to graphics support issues (also not gotten GRUB to work yet, either) - I even installed a GPU card, but it is not fully working because it appears something is funny with the driver code and the way Rockchip's PCI Express controller work together and it looks like a real kernel development problem (kinda reminiscent of issues with the Raspberry Pi and GPUs, but different ones). The real trick to getting a smooth GApps installation was to pack a custom ROM with a suitably loaded "product" partition/directory with the apps from a package like NikGApps. Can/will provide more details later/if you want them. No, I use keyboard and mouse. Android, though, is kinda quirky with them.
Thanks for the detailed response. I am thinking of getting the Firefly variant with 4GB/32GB. You mentioned you were trying to add a GPU? It seems the main reason for getting this is due to the Mali GPU. What I am trying to do is create a system with enough "kick" to compete with the Steamdeck but with a 10" screen. Frankly, I just wanted something a little better than my current solution based on a 2019 Shield TV (Tube) but with twice the performance. The Shield TV has been a fun project since I doing a lot of SMD soldering and working in small spaces. I plan to talk about it more on my YouTube channel 'All THings 3D' in a week or two. At $400 for a 10" variant (full BOM) using the Firefly makes it a hard sell for anyone except the tinkerer. If I stick with the Shield TV, it competes niceley with the new Logitech 7" cloud game pad.
Anyway I will message you since I have another project I am working on that may interest you.

You trying to make a handheld with this? This board, I don't think, is compact/cool (as in temperature - it has a fan!) enough for that purpose. It's really more like a mini desktop computer board, or at best a laptop - it'd be an awfully thick "handheld" to accommodate the ventilation... Yes, you're right about the Mali GPU - no Ubuntu support (but OK with Android 12). There are other and smaller RK3588 boards, but the heat dissipation of this processor looks, given the presence of a fan, to likely be a liability for handheld use I'd think.

I received the Orange Pi 5 yesterday and was able to get very good 3DMark (4454) rating with small heatsink on top of the RK-3588 without a fan. My case already has a couple low profile 40mm fans in the back of the case for the 10" 1080P screen that currently houses customized Shield TV board. This will work much better and with much better rating. The only problem is no WiFi or BT on the board and I am already using the M.2 slot for a NVME and none of my USB WIFI dongles work which means I will have to find a Android 12 build that someone has already included the drivers for USB device, or do it myself. Or, maybe Orange Pi themselves have USB driver built in that haven't disclosed which one yet. In any case $84 for the board with 8GB which is less than half of the price of any other RK3588 boards out there.
More to come...
