Question Gorilla glass victus+... Failed. - Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra

S22 Ultra slipped off the bed in the morning face down to the floor and the screen broke. That's exactly a 20 inch drop.
I have not changed my bed for years and dropped several phones including S21 Ultra/S20+ etc. and all survived.

ouch, that must have been devastating

Felt like a very normal glass to me. It's the clean tiled floor where it dropped.
The experience is similar to THIS, but with a much shorter height.

yeah sure, but with the "claims" they make for the glass, you dont expect it, my heart would have sank if it was mine after paying so much money out right for it

My phone cost me more than my 8k tv, its crazy how much they are, but, I don't regret it, I'm on exynos and nor noticing any issues other people are

You sound amazingly calm. Looking at the whole situation as positively as one can.

It is glass not steel victus or not victus it can resist abrasion not shock

Sorry to hear. Was the phone in a case? Glass vs ceramic tile, ceramic wins every time.

Was in the official silicone case.

I droped my phone on the bus today, after scanning my ticket, height was 1 meter. No damage att all. I've an original S22 Ultra Sammy cover. Not even a scratch on the cover. So you must have been very unlucky.

Not face down I think.

Hi bro
To be honest, I actually can't remember how it landed. My previous phone S9+ Ive dropped several times, never a scratch. But this was also in an original Samsung cover, not that I'm saying those are better - no way.
But fact is; a cover will always protect the phone if droppe, but you can of course be unlucky.
OP should not have had a broken screen from the given info. Should not happen.
A last word; Sammy quality is not was it used to be.
Regards DeHAWK

My S9+ succumbed to slate floor from bed height as well. It was in a minimalist case (Diztronic IIRC).
Point is, glass is glass and it WILL break regardless of what fancy name (Corning) gives it!
The curved screen is a major vulnerability, think of it like your junk, get kicked there, we know what to expect! ;-)

I think it got broken because of hit into curved element. My huawei mate 30 pro had a case and also a UV glass. It was impossible to screen to be touched directly by any surface. Still, when phone felt from half of the meter height, it got shattered below the protective glass. I miss flat screens. I hope my s227 will survive long time.

Bro same or not same height means absolutely nothing. Its physics. One degree, one angle different, one micron different and boom, your display its dead. Height means nothing. Previous experiences means nothing too. That's not how physics works.

As Tux111 this is just physics and luck, your phone falls on the very slightly wrong angle and it's done. The lower the height and the lower the chances of breaking it, but there will always be a chance, even from 5 centimeters

Haha I know. My point some previous galaxies(21U being the recent one) + a few other phones fell off from the same bed on the same floor face down several times and survived, so this time it felt weird.

It literally means having a protective glass on top was as useless as not having one - alteast in few scenarios and that sucks.

This incident injected me into thinking the same way, even if I know it may not be the case and it's all about how it landed despite of a short fall.
Still, I trusted "victus plus" to an extent and it shattered like a spiderweb more than my S22U's screen itself.

Gorilla Corning Glass 2

How strong is this suppise to be? My phone took a two inch fall and the screen is pretty much gone.
iTzAmazed
Normally its supposed to be decently strong. However, due to the design of the phone and the way the glass curves around the edges, it isn't uncommon for the point of impact to be directly on the glass. This creates a vulnerability for the device and is why you see so many broken S3s. This phone requires a case.

Had this phone for months with no case and it still looks great. Been through a couple medium drops (nothing too crazy, but a couple feet onto concrete from the car) and no marks at all.
I refuse to double the size of my phone, which i bought because it was so sleek and small

I have a uag case, too risky not to. I dropped mine from my mouth into the floor at the gas station. My only concern was getting it sanitized so I didn't get any germs.

The problem with Gorilla Glass is the corners. From my experiences anyway. A short drop right on the corner completely wrecked my screen once. But I think two inches is quite an exaggeration. Had to be at least 2ft. Maybe a foot.

I find it hard to believe that you dropped your S3 a couple of feet, from a car and onto the concrete and didn't at least get a scuff mark?
Unless you drive hot wheels and your concrete is made of grass!

That must be some drop. My screen shattered but it was also 10 degrees outside.
I have replaced several gorilla glass screens. They are great for scratch resistance, almost indestructible that way, but hit them on the edge, or pry up on it and snap crackle pop. I don't care what phone I have had, it gets a case that comes over the front to keep glass off table etc when face down, and I use Phantom Skinz on all my screens. Never had a problem yet, but it is fun replacing friends screens who don't like cases and screen covers ;-0.
droped mine less than 18 inches but caught the corner just right and shattered. the one time i didn't get insurance:crying:

Honestly how strong is the screen protector. Like against good hits and stuff... I usually do the field goal catch when I drop my phone, where it flies across the room... Obviously that still might be too much, but do you think it would hold up pretty good?

I think the screen protector is pretty strong. I look at it as a thin plastic/rubbery barrier between the glass and any sharp objects that might impact the glass. I have never broken or cracked a screen myself and had some pretty good drops/punts when trying to catch with foot lol.
Scratchproof not crashproof
GG protects against scratches, that's about it. I don't believe its any more shatter resistant than other glass. I use a bumper case, which protects the edges but leaves the back largely uncovered. Best compromise I could find between protection and not adding bulk. I actually prefer it to uncovered because I always found that the GS3 was kind of slick and easy to drop without a case of any kind.

Mine screen got scratched pretty soon after I purchased it. I was pretty disappointed. Ended up getting a ZAG and it's held up nicely.
My screen scratched from my finger nail. My wife's screen is all scratched to hell. Yet she does nothing different than she did with her Fascinate with gg1. I think the coating on gg2 much softer.
I don't like it.

It actually fell out of my pocket (pants pocket - lower cargo pocket so about knee height) as I was getting it out.
Thing is, this was new years eve, and it had been sitting in my car for a number of hours. It landed on the edge of a concrete walkway, so it was uneven pressure when it hit.
And being as there was snow on the ground, it was really cold - the phone being in my car (off by the way) for those hours meant it was just as cold (and brittle) when it hit.

There are two things on the screen in that picture - my customary piece of electrical tape over the front facing camera, and a screen protector.
The screen protector is why it's still usable. Without it, all the pieces of screen would have fallen out. The only thing that is broken, is the gorilla glass part of the screen.
It sucks trying to work through all the cracks and breakage, but because the screen protector keeps it all there and flat I can work through all that mess.
I bought another 32 gig model, so it's not the s3 I use day to day, but it does still have its role in my division of the android army.
I always use screen protectors, I don't care what claims are made about the screen. With it you have a chance to still use it in a worst case like this. Without it, this device would be relatively useless.
I'll eventually get around to buying another screen for it, but the screen protector held it together long enough for me to get another one, and now it's not such a priority on my list. Someday.

Dropped Mi Mix

The phone is really weak, I drop it less than 1 meter I forget it on my knees.
I share with you the picture
With a case or without
It's a pretty brittle phone. If you drop it on the corners it's done (as pictured)
I wonder why anyone would think it could even stand a small fall. Ceramic, even though one of the hardest materials with scratch resistance on par with Sapphire, is also very a brittle material.
I would be worried if this level of damage happened even with a decent case.
Until the OP responds, we'll never know.

I have had 2 so far. Dropped one with the case. Small fall 2ft and corner got nicked even with the case. So I gave that to my wife and bought a 6GB version. Dropped that again (1ft drop) and same exact place got nicked.
I would not buy another one. Love the phone but not that much.

Ouch, where to next then? Mate 9?
Original case.
Next phone would be S8 if the renders are true. My favorite phone by far was the note 7, but you know how that went.
I usually change my phone's every few months so let's see what else is out there that catches my eye.

S8 won't survive drops much better. Especially the curved sides will be sensitive for hits like the corners of the MIX are. And well my two Note 7 i've owned were very very sensitive at the curved sides. Because of i could return both units in any condition i tested smash resistance. Just a soft hit on the curved sides with any hard object, display cracked. Dropped the device from half a meter to one of the four corner, display cracked, frame not looking nice. Without a real ruggedized case most actual mobiles, like S7 Edge, Note 7, Mate 9 Porsche, etc. won't survive drops onto the weak parts of the casing.
I also dropped mine waist high with one of those jelly clear case right on the corner, lucky me it only got a small tiny chipped on the screen it's barely noticeable, I think that my heart stopped for a second when that happened.
This is why any case should have a front bezel and padded corners.
I dropped mine waist height and it landed directly on the corner. No damage.
I've dropped mine a few times from chest level onto carpet. It landed face down most times and so far nothing chipped. It's the original case.

I dropped mine from about 2 feet onto hardwood last night without a case on. Thankfully no scratches or chips or anything but now that I've dropped it once I'm scared to death. Certainly does seem to be a matter of time before it gets destroyed, at least without a case.
But honestly putting a case on this thing seems like it would almost entirely defeat the whole purpose of this phone, at least for me.

I dropped mine from chest height with the included case onto hard tile. Landed right on the corner where the front camera is. Chipped it lightly, and now there are a few small spots in the corner that look a bit like the camera hole. I didn't expect it to even survive the drop, and was quite impressed the display didn't crack.

To be fair, that corner does have a sizable bezel (assuming you're talking about the front facing camera). I wonder what the impact would've been if it was either of the upper corners.

Physical Drop & Scratch Resistance Report

Hi everyone,
The Essential company claims that the phone is very drop and scratch resistant thanks to the premium materials used in the phone, but sadly there are no official Essential drop tests available anywhere which is mainly due to all the problems Essential seems to be having with supplies and rolling out their first manufactured devices. There are also some reports surfacing from the very early adopters of the phone of some scuffs and scratches which never go beyond a mere mention.
I thought I would start this thread where people who have the phone can report about how the phone handles inadvertent drops and scratches and scuffs to the screen and the ceramic back. When posting, please also include a little bit of explanation as to how it happened and if possible a picture of the supposed damages to the phone.
Cheers.

I watched the video. Mous of 7 or better on the ceramic. The finish in the titanium can be damaged but noting like aluminum.
Forget about bending the phone. The phone is pretty tough. A case will protect th cosmetics.

Seems like this will be a very durable device.
Ya for what its worth it is way way way better than any aluminum phone would do. This they got right but its the software and camera that hold it back

My only complaint is the camera software.
Other than that, I don't have any issues.
I would like a case, but only for cosmetics.
Know what really does it for me? Stock Android is a bit too stock also. I have gotten really used to how the pixel works and really like it with all it's slight tweaks to stock.
The cameras sensors are still too small to be on the level of the the other flagships too. Not only software. The Google camera does pretty well though

I use Nova, so Android is never really stock for me.
I use Nova Launcher because I can restore my device layout on any device.
As far as the camera, I'm not that concerned about the quality.
For me it's a case of not having a better camera and just getting the picture is important.
If I really wanted a good photo, I'd use one of my"real" cameras.

I've dropped this phone in 1 week more than I've dropped my Pixel XL in the past 3 months, just because of how slippery the little bugger is. No damage as a result of dropping it, though.
I do have some very light scratches on the ceramic back, from sliding across my desk or countertop at home, which I was *not* expecting. Both the top, by the mod indentation holes, and at the bottom left, too. I know they aren't from dropping it, as every time it's fallen, it's landed on its side or a corner, never flat on its back.

It is definitely not the phone for everyone. Build quality is for everyone.
There are some software shortcomings. I think they can sort those out.
I sold my 6P. SO I have the Essential for the long haul.
I have my replacement phone arriving today. I have gone through 2 glass screen protectors that due to the fit of them (not sticking to the edges) I have a nick in the glass at the top left and the screen is completely shattered on the bottom left, I can see gold metal under it and it has a crack running diagonally from left to right from the bottom left. I know I never dropped this phone from more than 2 feet high. I also have the scratches on the ceramic back near the mods ports. I've only used my 360 a couple of times. I'm definitely getting a case and moving to a plastic wet install screen protector.
I haven't dropped this phone yet, but I have several hairline scratches on the back ceramic. I guess I'm around a lot of minerals or dust particles that are > 8 hardness, which I find interesting.
Also on the glass I notice a patch of hairline scratches. I'm usually real careful about my phones (of course, everyone says this) but I think that's more of Corning's fault this time around. They're really small but knowing they're there bothers me. I wish I could buff them out. I'll be getting a screen protector I guess.

Corning Gorilla Glass 5 on both front and back?

I was under the impression that the OP7Pro had CGG6 on the front, and CGG5 on the back.
But according to the corning's website itself:
OP7Pro has CGG5 on both front and back: https://www.corning.com/gorillaglas...glass-front-and-back/oneplus/oneplus7pro.html
OP7 has CGG6 on front, and CGG5 on the back: https://www.corning.com/gorillaglas...la-glass-front-and-back/oneplus/oneplus7.html
Is it because of the curved display? Are there any downsides to having CGG5 vs CGG6?
It's only for scratches. All the Gorilla Glass breaks when dropped, especially on an edge. As far as the difference, there is not much. Hell, even from the GG 1 to the 6 each one from the next Corning touts something like 20% stronger blah blah blah but in real life durability, there isn't much from the 1 to the 6 now. There might be 20% increased strength/durability from the 1 to the 6. but really what the main difference is is scratch resistance and even GG 1 is really good at that.

Amen to that. I broke the GG on my 3T screen, dropping it on its edge/corner onto a concrete sidewalk. Never broke a screen on a phone before (since before they used GG on these devices - Windows Mobile days!) and totally my fault. But when it happens, it happens.

That's not true. The hardness is the same. They claim the new versions can withstand drops better... Not the case.
Yeah you're right, it is CGG 5. I had the 6T before the 7 Pro and that was CGG 6. Why they downgraded for this device I'll never know. Probably to cut the cost a LITTLE BIT given the extra stuff they packed into the 7 Pro. I just hope CGG 5 is strong enough! I never drop my phones either way, but it's on my mind from time to time, I won't lie.

Be careful. Just one drop onto a screen edge or corner onto concrete, and it will shatter like a spider web! Happened on my 3T.

No you didn't understand what I wrote. I said Corning
"claim the new versions can withstand drops better... Not the case."
That means it's supposed to withstand drops better but that is not the case as in it's not true. I'm not taking about a phone case.

True, I had my 3 in a spigen slim case, took a tumble from my pocket while playing basketball, case came off from the side and cracked the whole screen.
Op7pro being both heavier and more glass covered, it seems to be a recipe for disaster.
I don't know if the claims made by corning about CGG6 being more drop resistant than CGG5 are true or not, but OP should've used CGG6 on the front no matter what, even OP6T had CGG6. And the drop tests on youtube for Op7pro aren't confidence inspiring as well..

Yes basically what I said. I said scratch resistance is the same and they improve the hardness, i.e withstand drops better. I'm not saying it's true. Like you I'm just saying that's whats claimed each new version

Ahh Okie
Yea...the CGG5 on the OP7Pro is horrible. I dropped my phone, from pocket to ground, in a case and it shattered the back glass. Mind you the front was fine but I didn't notice the back glass was shattered until 2 days later due to the case. I had to switch over to the CaseMate case that is sold through TMobile. I very rarely drop my devices and this was the first one I had to do a warranty claim on due to external damage.

That's sad. Which case you had when this happened?
This guy recently posted a crazy drop test video with one of the SupCases, and it seemed to hold up just fine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWhhpAhKIN0

Question How is your Ultra holding up? Scratches etc

My ultra is now 3 months old. I have the burgundy version. Even though I’ve been particular about cleaning it there is a tiny paint chip on the camera
https://imgur.com/Yb9IkHY
small permanent case markings that look like dust particles.

tried using one of lens wipes to clean it but it didn’t come off.
I’m curious how phones are holding up for you guys.
Still pretty much same condition as when I took it out of the box, already had the case & screen protector waiting so I didn't waste any time when it was delivered.

I actually didnt notice these small dots. Looked pristine to me but when I was cleaning and saw them in direct light it was noticed. What color do you have? Can you share a photo of the bottom of the phone?

8 o’clock to the laser autofocus. Small white spec.
Any chance you can post a photo of the bottom of your phone?
Attached.
Leave rhe plastic film on the phone if using a case. Dust scratches the plastic instead.

Well I’ll be doing that next time. Already removed em
I was actually surprised how easy the screen has gotten a ton of small little scratches, suppose its my fault for hating screen protectors and cases, finally started using Whitestonedome screen protectors and currently using the latercase.
Surprisingly the back of my phone still looks brand new
Mine is good so far. It comes out of the case every other day and it and the case get a wipe down with a damp cloth. Then dried with a microfiber cloth before going back in the case.
If you leave the phone in the case for long periods of time, abrasive particles will get in between the phone and case and the damage begins.
Mine is doing great. I treat it like my car; I use it as designed, clean it occasionally, and do a little maintenance every so often.

I would say no. If you think of this single spot on top, it was most likely a one dust particle.

They actually look like dust particles on mine too. They might seem less pronounced given your colour though. Mine wont wipe off completely.
I have the Black one and no scratches toll now (using without case) but camera has small Spot... The white one with no paint on the shell from my friend ist perfekt till now... Think next time i go for white
Put an Otterbox on the device right away but not a screen protector. The screen is extremely prone to micro scratches which can only be seen when screen is off, or with very low backlight and dark image (I've had the device a month an already some prominent micro scratches) . Awaiting screen protectors in the mail. This is a bummer as previous versions of gorilla glass stood up better to micro scratches (never had nearly the micro scratches on my S20 which I ran for 2 years without screen protection) . Pay off I guess for having better shatter protection.
Iv been running case with a naked screen ever since I realized that every protector ive tried affects either swipe typing and more so Spen responsiveness. Thank God tmobile allows you to add insurance to phones they offer regardless if it's bought from them or 3rd parties. The phone is just way to smooth for any obstructions for me.
no scratches
