Fuel Gauge IC Location - Google Pixel 3 Questions & Answers

Hi!
My Pixel 3 battery level is stuck at 57%. It charges, it discharges, but the displayed state of charge is always 57%. This happened shortly after flashing the January (2022) Security Patch, but I don't think the issue is related to the update, since downgrading to A11 did not affect the displayed battery level.
57 is also the value reported in /sys/class/power_supply/maxfg/capacity.
In /sys/class/power_supply/battery/capacity, however, the correct level is stored.
So I guess this is a hardware issue with the the Maxim Integrated Fuel Gauge IC (maxfg).
I haven't yet been able to find out the location of the IC. Does it sit on the battery or on the mainboard? Does replacing the battery (would still be worth it) fix the issue or would I have to replace the mainboard (=trash the phone)?
Thank you!

Replacing the battery fixed the issue.

Imate Jsjar crashes soon after disconnected from charger

My HTC universal crashes ( shuts off) after being disconnected from the charger for only a short while. I have noticed this when trying to make a telephone call and when listening to an audio book on Media.
The device is about 3 years old. The OS is Tomal version 8.5..is it an OS problem or battery problem.
I dont want to invest in a new battery if that is not the problem.
it's the battery!
It has to be the battery, see if it's bulged in the middle...means it has to be replaced. You keep using a near dead battery and one day it may leak/explode and damage your beloved Uni.Just change it.Or borrow one and see how your device performs so you can decide...
I neglected to mention that the battery shows 95 % charged when this happens. I can get back to the device if I plug it in.
Can you recommend a new battery?

95% of not much charge is still 95% charged, its the battery. If you look on Ebay you can find batteries quite reasonable, but try to go for an original one.
Jay
Is that really true? The amount that the 95% is applied to is not a fixed amount and decreases over time? If that is so what is the purpose of something that says 95% full? How can I find out what full is?
Imagine a fuel gauge like that. The size of the tank gets smaller and smaller.
Testing your battery
The only true way to test your battery is to measure its voltage. the two larger terminals on the battery are the + and _, the _ is the terminal nearest the corner. test it with a mulimeter, if it is below 3.75 volt then charge it and test again. If it drops below 3.75 volts after a short time then it is worn out. the battery bar on the screen is only a rough idea of power left.
Hope this clears this up for you
Jay
Voltage shouldn't be dropped, it will be same even if there is no charge.
The cell's inside the battery are not capable to retain the charge and immediately returns a signal to the control circuit that he is full! Control circuit then triggers an updates to the memory chip (located under control circuit).
Polling mechanism (triggers by the driver) in the device gets the battery status directly from the memory chip and it is the main reason basically getting a false percentage.
Anyway, just replace the battery and everything will be fine then.
Has anyone tried the suggestions mentioned under XDA wiki before replacing the battery. One alternative was to discharge the battery completely by freezing it and then rechargingt it. Another was to tape the two indicator terminals.
BTW what is the effect of going into "bootloader (by backlight+power+reset button)" as mentioned in solving the battery problem undeer wiki XDAI hope that it does not mean that I have reinstall Mobile 6.1
3 years is old enough for battery, i think its your time to buy a new one.
if you want to try one of that method, i suggest you trying a tape method. i try with my batery (fals indicator) and it work.
going to bootloader for drain your battery. for me i turn on wifi and blue tooth at the same time, set band to G3 and turn GPRS on, and playing music and games. it drain faster

master chef tomal is right , its the ability or capacity of the battery to hold proper amperage or power. you cannot simply measure the voltage across the terminals as it will not be definitive in ascertaining such holding capacity especially for battery that is about to deteriorate its cells (not yet fully dead).
Of course, if the reading is below than the usual rating, the only logical option is for you to replace it asap. but if its within the range, you have to do further testing.. and, if you want to experiment a little, try to put a load across its terminals like an LED with 1kohm resistor, and then measure the voltage. if it drops drastically, your battery is ready for retirement However, if the voltage rating remains, measure the time your battery will be fully discharged using that load. thereafter, let me know how many hours or day it lasted to help me compute the approximate amperage of your battery, regards... :

Interesting find on the battery stat issues...

Well like many here I've had issues with my Gtab always showing 100% on the battery then just shutting down. No amount of clearing stats via Clockword mod, calibration hacks or other tricks seemed to work. So I tried something different. Just swapped the battery.....
No I didn't find a source for them but I did have access to another Gtab. I had also bought a Gtab for my father a few months back. His battery stats always seemed correct. So I opened up both Gtabs and swapped batteries. Without doing anything else the battery stats on mine are now working properly and his started with the 100% charge error. I actually did NOT expect this problem to follow the battery.
I peeled back the battery cover and the charge circuit is built into the battery itself. The battery itself controls the LED and charge status and appears to supply the differential output for the board to know charge percentage. I didn't have small enough probes on my scope to pin out all the voltage points to see where the differences were but may go back and do that later.
Will update if I get into this further.

Thanks for confirming this so definitively, but, it is not surprising that this is a hardware issue--what you describe is almost to be expected because the battery on the gTab follows the Smart Battery System specifications.
See this thread for a script you can use to estimate the current battery level using the current voltage level.

[Q] What is the name of the fuel gauge chip of P3100? And how do I reset it??

Whenever my tab shutsdown at 2% battery and I instantly turn it on again it shows 5%. Same happens for manual shutdowns when battery less than 5%.
Today I restocked my tab (battery was around 25%) to fix this and the condition only worsened drastically. Somehow the stock rom has calibrated 25% battery to 100%! I changed back to custom roms but it persists.
Now am losing charge by 1% every 30sec or so. I am losing charge even while charging!(fastcharge that too)
Read a couble of threads about resetting the fuel gauge chip to fix any wrong calibration but the resetting process is different for various models of fuel gauge chips ( TI bq20z75 or Maxim etc)
So yes, help with the original question please.
Interesting but i don't know how to fix it but i think my friends can help you, wait i am calling them
One of the main reasons you need to have a fully charged battery when flashing.

Battery always reports -1%, but otherwise works. Can I override it to enable Google Play (and rooting)?

I have Cosmo Communicator phone on Android 9 and some time ago the battery started to report -1% charge. I bought a new battery but that did not help. Otherwise everything works, the phone is charged, it charges and discharges and when the real capacity of the battery goes to zero, it abruptly halts.
I think it is some sort of hardware failure but it is out of warranty, and repairing it costs as much as a new one.
The bad thing from usability perspective is that Google Play refuses to install/upgrade applications and cannot root the phone (it refused thinking the battery was too low, at least I think that is what happened). Is there any software way to trick the phone into thinking the battery is not -1 %? Or any other suggestion? A way to root the phone (which is officially supported) that would bypass the battery check?

If you're convinced that the battery itself is not the problem, you can run a Battery Calibrator app.
FYI: The Android OS has a feature called Battery Stats, which keeps track of battery capacity, when it is full or empty. The problem is that it sometimes becomes corrupted and starts displaying data that isn’t real, Calibrating Android's battery simply means getting the Android OS to correct this information so it is reflective of your actual battery levels once again.

Yeah, the battery is brand new. But I think it is still hardware based - maybe some motherboard failure or something like that. Resetting to factory settings or using the app you suggested did not help anything.
The phone can go on for a day while saying the charge is -1 %. Could I somehow just convince it it does not even have battery or something like that? Because it wrongly thinks the battery is about to die, it prevents me from changing to software in any way :-(. (I have to sideload the apps from APKs, for example).

Persistent issue with erroneous battery percentage even after battery change

hello, I have a redmi 5a, very old, recently it had a lot of battery problems with the wrong percentage, turning off between 20/15%, I took it to a place for repair, I bought a new battery and it was installed but the problem persists without any change, I already checked if the battery is really the new one and it is, could this be a problem in the cell phone's motherboard itself? I've tried all manual battery calibration techniques, all possible apps and nothing works
