Question How to update without root - Sony Xperia 5 III

Is it posible to update the OS without root? I was looking into xperifirm and flastool, but it seems flashtool cannot recognise xperia 5iii. I am trying to update os android 12. some how device model- xq-bq72 is not getting the OTA

I'm in your boat, I have that model and it hasn't been offered the update...yet, I imagine maybe we'll get it eventually, but when I tried to use Newflasher it didn't boot and I had to factory reset and recover back to stock with Xperia Companion unfortunately, so now I'm waiting...

contact Sony maybe
btw....i'm still on A 11 and will stay for sure....new stuff isn't always better

I guess I'll just have to wait as well.

Don't know if you've already managed to get Newflasher to work but I managed it using version 52 I think. Down loaded the Hong Kong custom build 61.1.A.2.211 from Xperifirm. No idea why it worked for me and not you. Good luck.

Interesting, I'll update for next time, but was actually finally offered the update last night and just installed it the normal way :-D

Great. Good to know that the XQ BQ72 version has finally received the ota.

You don't need to be rooted, I backed up my carrier's stock firmware using his method with PC Companion and Flashtool before flashing my Z3 with a Generic firmware.

Well there is no point in using it since there is a new update for this phone.
Available: 23.0.1.A.5.77
Current: 23.0.1.A.2.93
Since I just bought the phone I havent been able to use the repair function on Companion to create an FTF.
I have created an FTF on 23.0.1.A.5.77, but I need the Stock Factory firmware that came with the phone.

Ahh okay, for 23.0.1.A.2.93 then? If PC Companion is only showing you 23.0.1.A.5.77 now then yeah that guide won't be much help.

Yes, it wont help at all, the only way is to make a full copy by rooting 23.0.1.A.2.93 + Recovery or use an adb backup on this firmware.
But I cant find that software again and would like to have a firmware from my region in case I need this firmware to root.

It does, but when I flash like I did with Z1, my WiFi is ****, my 3G signal sucks and get updates late.
So would like to have a phone that isnt downloaded from a Telenor provider, would like to have it by region.
The cust codes and signals doesnt match my stock, which is a lot better than Telenor provider.

Yeah, I know what you mean, after I flashed my Z3 with the Global Generic fw from his thread my signals weren't as good as when I had my carriers fw. So it was a good thing that I backed it up cause that's what I'm using again ATM.

Hi,
I'have tried to manual update my D6603 Xperia Z3 to the latest firmware 23.1.A.1.232 (from 23.1.A.1.200) which is StageFright free.
I downloaded the FTF from XperiaFirm and than I flashed it using flashtool, no errors displayed. The phone now is in bootloop, stuck in boot animation.
My phone was unlocked and not rooted
Please, help

You didn't have to use flashtool. Use PC Companion. Sony's tool does the update for you.

Ok, I know, but my purpose was to change form Customized-ES to Custominzed-IT.
Once done that I would have downgraded my phone to Kitkat in order to root it.
Some minutes ago I managed to run 23.4.A.1.232 on my D6603 but I have some compatibility issues, preinstalled GAPPS don't run and the screen back illumination never turn off. I really don't know whats going on on that phone...
Now I'm using sony companion tool to repair the phone, if all goes right and I'm not going back to Customised-ES later I'll try to root it.
Basically all of this was a trial to understand if a was able to root it.

Anyway to Flash stock original firmware to my XZ premium prototype?

i have XZ premium prototype one with prototype firmware. I found stock original firmware in Xperifirm so i starting to work on it. after downloaded and create ftf (cant put the right name device for it as it shouldnt support yet for flashtools so i just choose XZ and it created with no issues). but when i start flashing it didnt go, i just would like to know do i need to install anything other than flashtools and device drivers? do i need adb or android sdk inorder to flash it? thanks a lot
You would have to wait for flashtool to support the XZ Premium and then it might not work and brick your device because the hardware might be different slightly from the prototype to the retail model.

Way back in the day when I had a prototype X10i it would only work on the prototype rom, when I flashed android 2.3 or something like that the touchscreen wouldn't work until I flashed back a stock 1.6 rom. It lasted 4 days before the screen went black out of nowhere bricked.
So yeah it's a risk going to another rom other than the prototype one in my experience.
What is the product CDA on your prototype rom? If it is storefront/commercial_journalist then i dont see a issue flashing a other region firmware on it.
https://xpericheck.com/device/G8141
Anyone managed to successfully flash stock firmware on prototype unit yet?
Yes I had prototype Xperia XA (F3111) and I successfully flashed both stock marshmallow and stock nougat onto it without any issues. Give it a try. I don't see why it shouldn't work for the XZP.

Oreo update ... still waiting.

I struggle to understand why it's so difficult to get any information about when I can expect my phone to update to Oreo. I understood that it would be updateable out of the box when I bought it back in August, but I'm still waiting. I'm not overly bothered about the new features, but I need an Oreo device to properly test an app I have to update, according to Google Play.
Anyway, I was wondering. It's November the 2nd, Oreo has been about for a while now, I have a 2018 phone running 7.1. I've tried updating through the few legitimate means available but am still being told my device is up-to-date. Trawling the Internet for clues about who has or hasn't got this update, I've failed to find any definitive information. So I don't know if my phone is not updating when it should be, and I'm reluctant to do any hacking. Too many bad experiences there.
So the question is, is anyone else here with a Galaxy A8 (2018) still waiting? I'm on giffgaff, with an unbranded, unlocked (i.e. not network locked) phone.
Thanks,
Paul.

I'm not rooted, and I wanted to avoid using Odin or any unofficial means of updating. In the past I've just had too many headaches with those approaches. I guess I was really just wondering who else out there is waiting for this long overdue update.
took my phone half a month to see a new update

You can try SamFirm downloader, when there is an update available it will show up.
Odin is safe to use, you can flash official filmware through it without a problem.
It is possible to flash other country filmware with the Oreo update with the same bootloader that you've got.
For some countries there won't be any updates to Oreo, and they stay on Nougat 7.1 August patch.

Whats the other solution you have left?
With SamFirm you can see directly if there's an update or not, its that simple and can do no harm.

I don't see the problem, from SamFirm you get an official update just like OTG, the difference is that its updating right from your Phone with an OTG.
Basically you receive the same update.
But, "Suit yourself"

I mean the actual hardware not firmware.
Don't forget that I cannot see any device that is connected via OTG adapter at this moment.
Problem solved.
OTG is supported only with the original adapter.

Official Xperia 5 ii Android 11 Stock Rom for Europe

I am wondering if there is any possibility to get an official Stock Rom (europe) of android 11 for xperia 5 ii. I tried to load version 58.1.A.5.530 with emma, but the install process aborted all the time. I was able to reinstall A12 via Xperifirm and new flasher command line tool and I'd like to install now A11 in the same ways. Any help? Thanks in advance
This is also my question! A12 is really frustrating me at the moment (calls dropping, bluetooth connect issues and also bluetooth volume control not working). Also the UI is just to gimmicky in my opinion. Spend the last 30 min to find a download for the official firmware for A11 europe, but wasn't able to track it down...
With more searching, I found a website with an archive of firmware files for the xperia 5 ii: https://support.halabtech.com/
It has the XQ-AS52_58.1.A.1.178_EE UK firmware. This should be it, right?
Firmware XQ-AS52 - Google Drive
drive.google.com
I'm a bit scared of bricking the device, so please let me know if this is the one for rolling back to A11
I don't know. It's definitely not the latest A11. I am not sure if there is a difference between UK and other Europe.
Any help?
I also see
XQ-AS52_EE UK_58.1.A.5.330.zip
and
XQ-AS52_Customized EEA_58.1.A.5.330.zip
these are more recent (aug 2021). Will download these two also and put those in the folder as well. Still not sure which version we need.

According to this guide 58.1.A.5.530 is the latest A11 and the author was able to reinstall it. Unfortunately I wasn't able to reinstall it via Emma flash tool but I may try via NewFlasher again, if I have the complete A11 stock rom

I wasn't able to get Emma working for some reason, but will try again. The website I found doesn't have the .530 version for EE_UK, only for RU and Vodafone and Orange phones.
Let me know when you get it working. Good Luck. At the moment my phone runs stable on A12. No freeze since 48 hours
But I think I need the get back on A11 anyway
OK, do NOT use the EE UK firmwares! We need the CUSTOM EEA.
Flashing the wrong one gave an error on booting.
I am now trying to get the 58.2.A.2.80 working again, but am stuck in a bootloop atm. Any ideas?
Try to install xperiafirm and use it to download the right firmware (Android12 only) then use newflasher and the guide I published to reinstall A12 - still better than bootloop

with the latest firmware reflashed I am now stuck in a bootloop. Factory reset does not work.
I can get into the recovery menu, but after a couple of loops it says 'device corrupted'
Ok, sorry to hear that. I guess then I was lucky with a NewFlasher Resetup
A12 running again via the official Xperia Companion app
I think I will just stick with it atm
I got another Update today. Build 58.2.A.4.52. I hope it's better now...
The latest Android 11 Europe ROM for Xperia 5 II can be downloaded here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/looking-for-latest-android-11-firmware.4412601/
I have manually reverted it from the FTF format, so it can be used with the Newflasher, you can download it here:
http://koprajs.mx-net.cz/XQ-AS52_Customized EEA_58.1.A.5.530.zip
But if you've already installed Android 12, you cannot probably go back because of the "rollback protection" feature of the bootloader. The only way is to unlock the bootloader and reset the rollback index.
Thank you very much. It freezes all the time, I think I am going to try this.
