How to access data folder from non-rooted device? - General Questions and Answers

A few weeks ago one of my important apps started crashing on open.
Since I have important informaiton saved on that app I need to obtain it.
Is there a way to access that package folder (and that app is not debuggable) with adb or shell?
When I try to access via adb and shell the result it Permission denied.
I can't root the phone, so this is out of the quesiton.
I'm using Google Pixel 1 with Android 10 Build - Build/QP1A.191005.007.A3)

There isn't any way to access /data/data/ as a normal user or shell user, the only user able to access that is root, at least according to the permissions.

You could try to backup using "adb backup package", then you could apply this backup back on another phone or on this same app after reinstalling it.

Temporarily root phone's Android, means add su cmdlet what is suitable, and then mount the partition in question as RW by means of ADB applying su.
Example:
Code:
adb devices
adb push <SU-BINARY> / data/local/tmp/
adb shell "chmod +x /data/local/tmp/su"
adb shell "/data/local/tmp/su -c 'mount -t auto -o rw,remount <PARTITION-IN-QUESTION>'"
adb pull "<DIRECTORY-TO-PULL>" <LOCATION-ON-PC>

Root and SU issues

Hello Everyone,
I have recently rooted my phone again but am having an issue. I cannot do an adb remount becase it says that permission is denied. This is going to be due to the fact that when I adb shell it starts with a $ instead of #. If I do the following it will work so that I can push files and system files:
PHP:
adb shell //enter adb shell
su //activate superuser
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mmcblock1p21 /system //mounts the drive and allows read/write
exit //exit superuser
exit //exit shell
adb push xxxxxxxxxx.apk /system/xxxxxxxxx/ //push whatever file is needed
My question is why can I not just adb push or remount? Does anyone know how to make it so that I auto superuser when doing adb shell so i get # instead of $?
you should be able to just type adb remount and have the /system turned either RW or RO depending on what its changing from...
Have you granted superuser permissions to adb? It should pop up on the phone.
yes superuser works on the phone. I can access superuser and it will work but I have to do it manually.

I understand that it should allow it but its not. That is exactly what this post is for. If i do the commands list in the first window this is manually change it to RW and then after I finish I set it back to RO.

Right, but a superuser request will pop up when you use adb remount. Try it again and check the phone for it.
its not getting to that point. It is giving me an error on the command prompt. I have checked for it and the SU wasnt there

You need to use adb to go in the file system and delete all trace of superuser and busybox. That is the only things rooting does, places those files on your phone and changes file permissions. File permissions, they won't look for, but I've had best buy scroll through the app drawer on multiple occasions looking for superuser/rom manager.
I have attached a zip containing all the files needed for adb. Since they no longer package adb with the sdk. Just open command prompt and cd to the directory containing adb. Make sure your phone has Usb Debugging enabled, then connect your phone.
You might need to download usb drivers in order for windows to recognize the device, but probably not. Once your phone is connected, do the following.
Code:
adb devices
adb shell
su
rm /system/app/Superuser.apk
rm /system/bin/su
rm /system/bin/busybox
rm /system/bin/rootshell
reboot
Click to collapse
but when i write rm /system/app/Superuser.apk it say
Read-only file system
so what should i do i only get my XS unlock then install superuser using
install-superboot-windows.bat
and i never do recovery!!!!!!
so any help
i need to get my nexus like new and i should then gt updates
You can have superuser and get updates. The update will remove root though. You could always wait for the cm nightly to include 2.3.3
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
You have to mount the /system partition as read/write.
Easiest way is use Root Explorer.
You can also try the following from adb or terminal on the phone:
Code:
su
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
thanks for your reply
i used Root Explorer to mount the /system partition as read/write.
and then
i did write this codes
adb devices
adb shell
su
rm /system/app/Superuser.apk
and every thing was ok
but i have an error on those lines
rm /system/bin/su
rm /system/bin/busybox
rm /system/bin/rootshell
and every time i get file not found
so what i should do???
hello, tominater12 and thank you for reply
cold you tell me how i can remove superuser and root using the update??????
i want to get my nexus s like new no root no superuser
so any one can help?
hi guys,
this is my first post in the forums, but after reading and watching many videos on how to remove it i have found a solution...my nexus s is now unrooted with no superuser...
make sure u have android sdk installed, and have usb debugging on.
restart phone into recovery
open cmd and type -
cd c:/AndroidSDK/tools/
adb shell mount /system
adb shell rm /system/app/Superuser.apk

Rooting with/using a Linux computer

Here's (almost) the process I used
change settings on device
"Unknown Sources"
"USB Debugging"
Find which device is mounted as "/system"
On my stock ICS .26 system this is "/dev/block/mmcblk0p1", but this might be something different (?)
adb shell mount | grep " /system"
copy files to device
copy debugfs to device
adb push debugfs /data/local/
copy su to device
adb push su /data/local/
copy debugfsinput to device
adb push debugfsinput /data/local/
setup temp directory
rename /data/local/tmp to /data/local/tmp.bak
make a new /data/local/tmp that is a symlink to /system device (as determined in step B)
ln -s /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 /data/local/tmp
reboot tablet
mark debugfs program executable
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/debugfs
run debugfs using "/data/local/debugfsinput" script
adb shell "/data/local/debugfs -w /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 < /data/local/debugfsinput"
cleanup
remove /data/local/tmp symlink
move /data/local/tmp.bak to /data/local/tmp
remove /data/local/su
remove /data/local/debugfs
remove /data/local/debugfsinput
reboot
test superuser (see if "su" command works [no output, especially no error message])
install superuser app
adb install Superuser.apk
One thing I did different in some places was to just do "adb shell", and then issue commands one-by-one in the remote shell.

How to root TF700 Jelly Bean from Linux without unlocking?
[description of process updated and moved to first post]
It occurs to me that steps D through J should be doable on the device using the Terminal Emulator app that I've got installed.
Thoughts, anyone? See any dangerous pitfalls ahead on the path I'm about to undertake?
I'm going to hold off on actually doing this until tomorrow. This will to give people a chance to respond, and I need to attend to other matters (dinner, chores, etc...)

Another thought.... step C obviously doesn't need adb, and step K could be done with the "pm" command in the Terminal Emulator.
It seems I could do this without using adb at all--- not sure why I'd bother, unless I have problems getting it to work, or just to prove that I can.
I rooted my TF700 under Linux by reading the batch file and doing the steps manually - similar as you describe in your second post, but I even typed the input to debugfs manually. The whole process depends on getting at least "shell" user access, so I am not sure that it could be done without adb - a local terminal app would run under its own, more restricted user account.

There is also a shell script version around for that famous rooting batch file. Technically obviously the same as reading the commands and typing them manually ... but still

But doing it manually is so much more l33t.

How do I adb pull root directories (like "/system"?) to my Windows PC??

Hi there, I'm trying to pull root directories like /system and /data without any luck. My purpose it to have them on my PC as a backup, and be able to browse them to pull out apps and pieces of data as necessary if it ever becomes necessary.
Device: Nexus 6P (North American version)
ROM: Stock 6.0.1 Rooted, using Wugfresh Nexus Root Toolkit and SuperSU
PC OS: Windows 7 PC (64 bit)
Adb is working properly and I can easily pull non-root directories like "/sdcard" and so on. I'd like to be able to backup the entire root directory ("/") or at least the child directories (like "/system" and "/data", etc.) Unfortunately, when I try
Code:
adb pull -p "/system" "C:\somewhere"
it skips a bunch of files, so I need to come up with a better method.
I've tried
Code:
adb root
and it tells me it's already running in root mode.
I try
Code:
adb remount
and it does this properly, but doesn't change the effects of all the commands I've tried.
When I run
Code:
adb shell
it enters shell and gives me # by default, so seemingly it is giving me su permission by default?
*** Oddly, when I enter "su" while in shell, it tells me "/sbin/sh: su: not found" which seems odd to me. I think it's possibly that SuperSU is installed as systemless root, or there's something else screwy here, so I guess I'm not sure how to proceed. Still, if that were case, why would adb already be running as root, and why would shell automatically give me the #?
Any help is appreciated!!
Thanks!

Problem using adb with Moto C

Hi, I'm having trouble choosing the right section, anyway..
After more than a year i managed to correctly install ADB drivers, because before i installed Google driver, when i noticed i must install Motorola driver , the removing of previous one did not successful done, so the Motorola one did not installed well, by manually removing files it succeed.
But now another annoying not previewed issue, i need to exchange a file in /system/etc both in my tablet and my Motorola moto C tel. , it needs to remount system part. in r/w but to do this need to restart adb as root but with 'adb root' this is the answer:
adbd cannot run as root in production builds
my system is 7.0, what can i do?
You can install a temporary root to run shell-commmands what require root-rights like mount in ADB:
Code:
adb devices
adb push <FULL-PATH-TO-SU-BINARY-ON-PC> /data/local/tmp/
adb shell "chmod +x /data/local/tmp/su"
adb shell "/data/local/tmp/su -c 'mount -o rw,remount,rw /system'"
I have two questions, i don't find any su command available in the net.
I don't understand how it is possible to have to do all these hard maneuvers with a debug tool, i think it might be simpler.. why there's a command remount or root if it doesn't work?
