Encryption Android 12 - Google Pixel 3a Questions & Answers

Hey, I just updated my Pixel 3a sargo (JPN) to Android 12 but now, when I try to decrypt data on TWRP or Orange Fox, it says unable to decrypt data. The only solution that is working for me is to diable my code. Is there any other way to do this like diable force encryption? I already tried no verity opt encrypt but it's not working.
Any ideas?

TWRP currently has no support for Android 12 decryption. Your best bet is to either wait or flash DFE.

You only have to disable it if you're booting into recovery. You can put it back when you go back to Android. I can't imagine you have to be in recovery so frequently that this is a problem, at least until A12 decryption is supported in TWRP.

I hope this isn't a stupid question, but @Captain_Throwback's comment makes it look as if removing the PIN (and fingerprint data?) allows TWRP/OrangeFox to decrypt data and therefore enable backup and restore? Is this correct?
In the past encrypting took quite a while, and I doubt that PIN removal would actually decrypt the device (my OnePlus 8t is encrypted). It would be great if that were the case, but I'm doubtful.

Can't disable encryption

Hi all,
Title says it all: I can't seem to disable the device encryption on my Transformer. In the Encryption menu the Encrypt tablet option is greyed out and just says Encrypted beneath it.
How do I disable this?
Thanks,
Casey
Do you have a exchange account set up? Some accounts force encryption.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using XDA Premium App
I do, but the odd thing is that I manually chose to encrypt through the encryption menu - it wasnt a forced policy.
cant be undone. When setting up encryption (manual or through policy) the device says explicied that only way to undo is to hardware reset to default.
You ignored that so its staying encrypted or reset.
I have also encrypted my eeepad and dont notice any performance issues. I like it encrypted because i also use it for work/studie

Well, dunno about ignored... more like didn't notice...or maybe didn't read the instructions properly....lol.
As for performance issues, the boot takes longer and we have to enter the passcode twice, which is a bit of an annoyance.
Thanks.

Same with my Nexus 4. I m using TWRP to upgrade roms:crying: If u find any solution pls let me know.
You should be able to do a factory reset from TWRP directly.

I had this problem awhile back. Neither TWRP nor CWM could do a factory wipe while encrypted. If you run into that search for the superwipe script, it worked quite well to get me back on track.Should find the script here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1245892

Help! - Honor 6X needs PIN after installing RR 5.74

Hey all,
i have a Bigproblem. =(
I bought a new Honor 6x and unlocked the Bootloader. Then i installed TWRP successfully.
After that downloaded the RR 5.74 and OpenGapps and installed them, too.
NOW after restarting the Honor 6x, the phone wanst me to enter a Android PIN/Password.
I cant do anything...i have to enter a Android Pin.
Before installing i didnt enter any Passwords and i deactivated the Fingerprint.
Do you know what i should do?
I dont know what to do know =((
I tried my unlock code, my SIM Pin etc but everytime it says "Falsches Passwort" - Wrong Parrword.
Also i tried to format via Twrp but it says "Unable to format to remove encryption."
Please help me...
Try this , go to TWRP and the wipe data and click advanced , then select data , cache and dalvik cache, this might help .
NOTE : this may erase all the data of your phone including contacts pics etc
asked for password after flashing LineageOs ROM
Hi Folks,
this is my first post in this forum and I'm completely new to whole Android stuff, although I'm a well experienced Gentoo user.
I have nearly the same trouble, except the before mentioned message "Unable to format to remove encryption."
After flashing the latest ROM (lineage-13.0-20170205-UNOFFICIAL-berlin.zip) I also got asked for a password I didn't have.
I tried different ways of wiping cache, dalvik-cache, data, system, trying factory reset and also formatting /data and but nothing works for me.
Of course I can go back to my latest working Backup of Marchmallow 6.1, but I wont get rid of all that google stuff, so your help to my upgrade path to LineageOS is very much appreciated.
In the meantime I also tried to flash lineage-13.0-20170203-UNOFFICIAL-berlin.zip and later also the Resurrection Remix 5.7.4 for Honor 6X (Berlin), but after every first start of theses custom ROMs, a password request came up.
I definitely deleted my fingerprints before and at last I additionally deactivate my SIM Password.
What could be the root cause for this?
One stupid question more, please. What for is the recovery.img here needed:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/?id=19229#downloads
If it means only the TWRP.img file, I'm using twrp-3.1.0-0-berlin.img which should be correct.
Also I installed supersu SuperSU-v2.79-201612051815.zip out of twrp, cause it missed the often mentioned direct root option within advanced options. I guess it was part of earlier versions of twrp, right.
Have I overlooked some important step?
Best regards, Andy.
Honor 6X = Berlin or not?
Cause the twrp devices site has only one entry for the Honor 6X (as of today)
and the call its code name Berlin, I (or we) came to this possibly wrong conclusion, I have exact this version.
But now I guess I'm wrong, cause my device is a
BLN-L21C432B130
which is mostly called in this forum as a BLN-L21 : Europe, Netherlands, Italy Variant.
Am I right, that the linageos and the RR versions I (or we) tried to flash, are wrong versions for such devices, and the right ones doesn't exist until now?
Andreas, what's your exact Build Number? Did you the same fault as I do?
Could anyone of the more experienced member please state that.
Best, Andy.
Pin furthermore needed
Sorry Folks,
as a new member, I have not enough rights to post directly to the ROM section here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-6x/development/rom-resurrection-remix-m-5-7-4-berlin-t3551705/page5
A member called Pokhara solved the PIN issue, but I can't do so and asking myself what I'm doing different or wrong. I tried it several times inspiered by his and different posts, but equal if I'm flashing RR 5.74 or LineageOS, after a restart I'm asking for a PIN.
Possible you'll see what I'm doing wrong or differently, compared to your successfully installation:
At first, I'm deleting all my Fingerprints and deactivate the using of it into the Phone Settings.
I'm using latest TWRP-3.1.0-0 (berlin. image)
Using its Advanced Wipe function, wiping the following partions / directories:
Dalvik / ART Cache
Cache
Data
Internal Storage
System
(but of course not the Micro SDCard)
Question: is it right to exclude the Boot Partion, which is not listed here. I guess cause it is not checked into the settings dialog as wipeable.
I'm afraid that would brick my phone (prevents booting it) - right? (Or is this the difference to your procedure)?
Than I'm flashing RR and than the recommend GApps package too
or, on a different trial the LinageOS.zip alternatively.
Reboot, Splash screen of RR or Linage appears, asking for the PIN which I can't skip > finished
Any help is very much appreciated.
Best regards, Andy.
Password problem solved!
Good news from my side, folks.
Yesterday I've got solved my problem and I'm wondered a little why none could give me the right hint before....
After using the older version of twrp-3.0.2-0 for the first time, everything works like a charm.
For me the misleading description was, to not name the version and what this file contains (recovery.img) here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/?id=19229#downloads
so please rename it to something like: twrp-3.0.2-0-berlin.img
This prevents other users (like me), to use a newer version, which was also recommended for this phone (cause more bugs are fixed), but this had never worked for me successful with this phone!
I presume: If you're not using a newer version of EMUI 4.1 or a BuildNo. BLN-L21C432B130, or Android 6.x.
Nevertheless, now I'm able to install LinageOS or RR 5.7.4 successfully. So I hope this conclusion could also help some others out there.

Encryption Issues

Hi, I hope you guys can help. I have an OPO which is on Android 8 as per this link and it was all working fine (well, it's a bit buggy in places, but I can live with it!).
I have TWRP installed (3.2.3.0), and had no problems with it, was easy to access and install/backup with it; I have reasonably recent backups too (but wait for it....), and phone is rooted using Magisk.
Anyway, in a recent bout of paranoia, I encrypted my phone. It's a long story, but the company I work for recently employed an IT company to manage its systems and I didn't want them poking about where they shouldn't (they are not particularly good).
The encryption worked straight away, and clearly functions as it should; rebooting the phone requires a pattern unlock, and the phone is clearly marked as encrypted.
HOWEVER when I went to try and get into TWRP, I was faced with the same pattern unlock request - I tried it, and my pattern doesn't work. I have seen suggestions about disabling screen lock, or changing it to a PIN, but this doesn't affect the pattern unlock on TWRP. I reckon I can probably access the backups when unlocked via PC file transfer, so presumably can flash these via ADB, but I'm a bit loathe to in case something horrible happens.
So, is there a solution? do I:
try and reflash TWRP/different version of TWRP
flash the backup?
try and decrypt the phone
cry?
with regards decrypting, I can't see any way of reversing the encryption one it has happened - kinda wish I'd known that before I'd done it.
Help would be greatly appreciated. It isn't a major problem, phones working, it's just my modding is kinda curtailed....
Would this one work?

yep, that's awesome, fully up and running now. Just for anyone else experiencing this problem, I downloaded the TWRP version listed above, then flashed it via ADB (unlock USB debugging on your phone, connect it, open a powershell window where you keep your adb files, 'adb reboot bootloader' then 'ffastboot flash recovery [NAME].img' and it will reinstall TWRP with the new version).
Bit of a moment when I rebooted to recovery, as faced with the same decryption unlock window, but this time the decryption worked and was able to access TWRP fully.
Nice one.

Screen lock was already changed, try again with the new screen lock

Hi,
After unlocking the bootloader with the latest official app, I cannot change the screen lock method of my Zenfone 6 with a message saying "Screen lock was already changed, try again with the new screen lock" and I can only choose "None" or "Swipe". The fingerprint breaks as a consequence because it relies on PIN/password/Gesture.
The phone comes with a fingerprint + password authentication before the unlocking, which seems to cause my issue due to mess-up of the TEE. Factory reset / Reflashing the whole image doesn't work.
Anyone experiencing similar issues? Is there any way to re-enable other unlocking methods?
Thanks!
Same happened to me,
I got back the pin option only when I relock the bootloader.
I used the official asus application, I'm gonna try the adb unlock option
Same thing here. Unlocking the bootloader breaks it. I fixed mine by flashing the downgrade to P zip, setting my phone all back up and then updating to Q. You might be able to just reflash Q and have it work, but if that fails go to P and then upgrade. Haven't had an issue since.
Did you downgrade to P being bootloader unlocked? If so , did you use the official asus method with their apk, or did you unlock with adb?
Thanks for your response !!!

So, I am on a custom ROM, but I understand that you solved this on stock. Does anyone have experience how this can be solved on a custom ROM? Thanks!
Hey, I was having the same problem and tried doing several things without success (Like deleting files in the /data/misc/keystore, changing different ROMS, etc). What fixed it for me was restoring the vendor partition, the problem was that I removed the enforced encryption flag and that was causing problems with the GSIs I was installing.

how did you restore the vendor partition? did you use the backup on twrp or something? is there a flashable zip?
also did this happen after you unlocked or after you installed a custom ROM with encryption disabled?
Did you guys manage to fix it? I actually have the same problem with my Redmi 8A after flashing Magisk on Havoc and Stock ROM. I tried to delete the locksettings. db and .key files but i still can't set a pattern or PIN

Spot on !
Removing the .key and lockfiles from /data/system works !
I can set PIN again
....
Swipe TWRP on your phone, enter the system, and delete 2 locksettings....file in the DATA\ SYSTEM\ folder directory.. The file at the beginning can be successfully protected by restarting and setting a password or fingerprint.

[Rooted OP6] I would like to do an android update and have some questions

Hi there, my OP6 is running:
Android 8.1.0
Oxygen 5.1.8
I haven't updated in a long time because I was afraid to lose root. Now I actually want to unroot my phone and figured I could also do the updates.
So main questions are:
How do I perform unroot? Should I just perform the android update that's waiting in the settings menu?
Can things go wrong? Can my phone get bricked?
Does my phone get wiped?
Incase my phone gets wiped, what's the best way to make backups of system settings?
You can download latest 10.3.1 zip and do a local update...in os updater options...
you can do it without wiping...BUT I STRONGLY RECCOMEND YOU TO FULL WIPE...CAUSE YOU'RE SKIPPING AT LEAST 3 ANDROID VERSIONS...AND YOU MAY FACE MANY ISSUES if you don't...
you can root your phone with twrp...very easy...nothing would brake...but if you dont want root anymore just do a local update...and its done...but your bootloader may still be unlocked...but without any root or twrp...
And for backup there's option in settings it is called BACKUP XD...if you have google account...you can just tap on backup and then on android setup your apps and settings will stay...
Hey thanks for the response!
Does Google backup also save settings?
The bootloader is actually the problem I just know remembered. How do I lock that again?
The main reason I want an unrooted locked phone again is because banking apps make a fuss about this and won't work.

No, you can't do that. You cannot jump from 8.1 to 10. System update will give you an error. You can do it this way 5.1.5 (8.1) > 9.0.9 > 10.3.1

Yes it does...
And for banking apps...some may work with Magisk Hide option...you can hide your root for that specific app...and it should work fine....try it...
And if you want to lock the bootloader completely...you need to use MSMDownloadtool instead...
