I need help with upgrading - Samsung Galaxy W (SGH-T679M) - General Questions and Answers

I'm searching these forums, the web, every single website, and I still haven't came across a solution. Cyanogen, clockworkmod, they don't want to cooperate. I really am desperate now.
I'm trying to find a way to easily run a ROM on my phone, or maybe just install it. I'm aiming for Kitkat, but I have no idea how, as almost all of the posts on this forum contain broken links. Please, someone help!!!
Alex

Tell me about your fone.
Whats your skill set, as in do you KNOW how to unlock bootloader? Do you know how to root?
Firmware creators are too busy creating firmware. And fixing Bugs.
If your a noob, I can handle that, in effect, I need more information, because all those broken links are irelevant when what you actually need is found in millions of posts here..
The very reason developers dont answer

Okay.
My phone is a Samsung Galaxy W. It's model number is SGH-T679M and it is currently running Gingerbread.
And so I wanted to change that version because... Gingerbread is unsupported, right? So I landed on this forum first, trying out all the ways that I could, and most of them lead me to dead links as I said.
So I went on different web pages, the Android subreddit, all that. Ended up finding this zip file supposedly containing KitKat or something earlier.
I tried to install it how they told me. Already knew how to go into recovery mode, then it told me to go to the apply update from sd card (used the internal storage instead because i could) and it said the MODEL NUMBER WAS WRONG.
It was for the Samsung Exhibit II, model I8150, and that makes no sense. Because they are LITERALLY THE SAME PHONE.
Thought this was gonna be simple but it was being rough on me. This is why I need help, because I honestly don't know what to do anymore. It is so confusing.

Look at this:

correct the link above copy n paste in your browser
Then say if you can handle the work, nothing more. If you are up for it, your best here

Youre asking how to install a theme?? Find once compatible for your rom. Stick it on your sd card. Boot into recovery, and flash it.
Post what problems you are having. Good luck.

im not even sure which rom to use, i have tried a couple but the adk is where i am stuck at, when i go to command prompt it isnt at the c://adk/etc.. like what all the write ups are at, its at c://user/applications or something of that nature and i type what should be typed in on the /adk part of it and says it can not be found. i tried reinstalling the adk again and same problem, im doing something wrong somewhere i assume or stuck in a spot that i keep doing wrong and not noticing. i just rooted it, so whatever rom i have i am assuming is the stock one since i havent gotten past this yet.
Your in over your head man, seriously, YOU put the sdk where you want it, me, I just put it in C:\sdk to make my life easy when changing directories.
If command line work is not something your familiar with, have patience, enjoy your rom as it is right now and wait until the super easy one click gui programs are created.
Did you buy the phone already rooted, or did you root it yourself?

You say you rooted it yourself, which is great, but the questions you're asking are so far out that it makes it urprising that you did.
UNLESS... you rooted using simpleroot or some ****? If sooooooo, that makes ur questions make a lot more sense.
Anyways you just boot into recovery, and flash the zip from that menu.
It has nothing to do with adb, cmd, or any of that other bull**** you're talking about. Just do what's bolded and stop going 3 miles outside of the box.

I agree, OP, you are way over complicating it dude. What is your build number? Settings> about phone> software information.
If I didn't know better I would almost bet you're trying to troll us. Being a brand new account and all.

I don't believe you anymore. Even Root tutorials direct you to install a rom after rooting, which would put you at 1.47.65 or whatever even without 2.2 upgrading.
Trying to flash a zip that isn't valid doesn't do anything at all to your phone... it just... doesn't work and sends you on your way. Absolutely nothing you type comes off as a "real" problem.
Anyways, I'm just going to say straight out, that I think you're trolling and that it's sad that you made an account just to waste your time.
I'm done with this thread.

think what you would like, im not a kid. ive answered your questions. computers or phones is nothing new to me. family works for sprint, but will not mess with the rooting part of it. so i was left alone on this. ive searched and searched and what u have read is where i am at. basically i am wanting a custom theme. i have tethering and all that crap that works fine. but a theme wont work and a rom to be 1.47 or whatever was never put on, i have what i posted and have everything a rooted phone should have. obviously im stuck on that rom part of it. no reason to be a **** or call someone a troll or say their trolling, when their asking questions. if ur intentions wernt to help, than dont reply. u wasted ur own time.

Sph P100 NOT FOUND ON QSTP

i did a search on this form and i couldnt find nothing similar. to make a long story short when i bought this tablet i was able to put it on DIAG using launcher pro and a few other steps of coarse. and i u was able to read this device on QSTP and i used to get this on QSTP FFA6550-ZRF6500 same one as my Epic 4G. mow here is what happened i was flashing a stock tar ROM with Odin and by accident i checked the clear EFS on Odin and after i a succesfull process after my tab rebooed of caorse y lost all my 3g activation from the tab and when i went to QSTP to load all my activation again it was not able to be detected it on QSTP anymore. now if i go to device manager on windows or QSTP configuration its shows on what port the tab its connected on but under phone number it says NO PHONE. iam wondering what did got wiped? radio or what did i lost? or how can i get back this FFA6550-ZRF6500 or what ever its the right one into this tab? i know it used to have FFA6550-ZRF6500 but i dont know if there is another one for this tab or not. if anyone has any info please let me know thanks in advance..

It disturbs me that in every one of your posts you are mixing up the names of critical tools and systems. I would take a step back, read and understand the systems and processes you need to work with, and then try again.

Well, to be honest your writing style makes it incredibly hard to figure out what you are even talking about, and of course you aren't going to find what you need when you aren't even using the right terms. It's QPST, not QSPT or any thing other than QPST.

oh **** lol. my bad i didnt notice that. yes thats what i ment QSTP to flash or edits phone. sorry about that. its sucks having bad eyes like in my case. thanks robyr.
and you're in the wrong device forum as no tab plus has qualcomm chips, I imagine you have the Original 7" Tab correct?
I would still be willing to help, but I havent used the QSTP tool that much. We are familiar with Odin. you say you have no 3G, so you're ROM boots up? Can you check if you have an IMEI or an /EFS folder present? If not you may have a very difficult time recovering if its possible at all.
What do you use QSTP for? flashing radios?
More clear info and we can try to help, although Id start by searching you're devices thread.

thanks chrisrotolo for you reply. well i have a sprint version of the galaxy tab 7 inches. sph p100. when i first got it i was able to put it on diag mode to be able to flash it to my boost mobile account. and qhen i sued QPSt i was abel to edit the phone or what ever its called on the tablet and i had it working for over a year. but i was doing a clockwork and recovery flash trough ODIN and i dont know how the hell y checked clear EFS and the damn activation disapeared and when i tryed to reflash it again to my account but QSTP wasnt able to detected. it does show up on the device manager and it shows as the modem and the port wich its using. just like it used to before this whole thing started. but now on QPST it not showing up. this whole, thing its stupid. i dont know what the hell it got wiped when the clear EFS was checked. i had done this clear EFC crap on my spint Epic and i dont have that issue am able to go back to QPSt like nothing ever happened. its just this damn tablet its now showing up as a phone like it used to.. iam about to smash it..
welp... here you are.. http://mobiletechvideos.mybigcommerce.com/samsung-galaxy-tab-imei-efs-repair/
googled it in about 2-3 seconds flat. Restoring IMEI with a box is the probably the best way to go.
I just had my Tab Plus JTAG'ed because I flashed a custom boot loader. ( I was aware I was doing so)
I highly recommend this site. If you're in a rush you can choose rush option. This guy is great, send him an email Im sure he can help.
do you have any /efs folder or nv_data.bin or nv_data.bak files anywhere?
Enjoy. Research a bit more and be careful flashing huh?
Peace.

Alright, Im going to be completely honest. I am a complete and total noob to the tech behind smartphones. As Ive been learning, I tried rooting my Samsung Galaxy SII SCH-R760X, and after I attempted to flash a kernel that was suggested by this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/general/how-to-root-galaxy-sii-sch-r760-generic-t1928566, my phone is now stuck at the logo with a warning sign at the bottom. After all this, I realized I made the worst possible mistake anyone could ever make: I didnt backup my system. Luckily, I didnt have much data on it anyway. At this point I am aware it has become a softbrick, and Ive looked at guides such as this one:http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s2/development/guide-fix-unflashable-soft-bricked-t1619571, but it still tells me to "put the recovery file in its place". Im assuming he's talking about the backup... which i dont have. If anyone could point me to where I can find a backup for it, or upload one for me, I would be incredibly in debt to you. Thank you for reading, I know how most people feel about noobs, but I dont know where else to go.
Please, if I am doing something wrong with this post, please tell me. I dont want to be an annoyance. In fact, this is my first time ever posting to a forum! Id love to get into smartphone tech, however, since I couldnt find a place to start, I made the foolish choice of simply diving in and ruining my phone (hopefully not permanently). Anyway, thank you for reading! Even if you cant help, I really appreciate the attention. Thanks!

You have already found good threads.
To recover a soft-bricked device, you basically have to flash back an official firmware for your device.
The guide you found was for the GT-I9100G, which is a little bit different from your exact device model.
Here is another guide for other variants of the S2: [GUIDE] Fix an unflashable or soft bricked GSII (I9100G/M/P/T VERSION INCLUDED) by Phistachio.
As there is no "ready-to-go" recovery package available for your device model, you have to get an official/stock firmware for your device.
A link to possible firmware sources is in the first post of the guide you posted.
Flashing the stock firmware with Odin should fix the soft-brick.
If not, maybe a wipe data (= factory reset) in recovery mode (long press Volume UP + HOME + POWER) is needed additionally.
And rooting your device seems to be working with this too: [ROOT] Framaroot, a one-click apk to root some devices by alephzain ... I found some users confirming it working fine to root your device model.
If you still have issues and need further help, please ask in the [Q&A][SGS2][Newbies][Experienced Users][RCs] New members friendly Q&A thread by It_ler thread.
There we try to give detailed help for all variants of the S2.
Good luck !
Thanks for responding man! I didnt think anyone would reply.
I really appreciate the help. However, I downloaded and flashed the droiddroidz kernel turner78 said to flash, and that was what made my phone go softbricked in the first place... I tried flashing the other two kernels instead, and they proceeded to put my phone in bootloop... So, I tried flashing the "Siyah" stock kernel everyone was talking about, and it made this weird eye thing with a yin-yang flash on my phone... And Im sorry Im a total noob, I just recently learned what flashing and kernels were from the help of google :/... Im still a little lost on what Roms are. But reguardless, Im assuming the kernels I tried flashing were incompatible or corrupted, and thats whats making my phone not work. If Im wrong, correct me please. I know my phone is version 1.4.1, but thats about it. I dont know if its "Gingerbread" or "jellybean" or whatnot. Im sure Ive just made a stupid mistake and Im too dumb to know how to fix it.

[Completed] Can Clockwork or another recovery program find and backup your truly stock ROM?

My question current is really about better understanding something in this whole Root and Linux learning adventure I think I am totally confused about.
Basically if no custom ROM exist or your device is not listed on the supported list of devices in any recovery program....
OR as in my case you want desperately to get the thing back running on it's true stock what do you do?
Your rooted, but stuck.
So my main question is:
What is the best way to bring a device back to stock if there is no stock ROMs available and factory reset will not work?
On any device in this situation. Mostly I am hoping to have it explained in a way I can really finalize this confusing hole in my logic.
Like can a recovery program find it if it is still on the device somewhere and if not, why not?
Thanks in advance.
Additional backstory if helpful.
I have a Wacom Cintiq Hybrid running Android 4.1 that is ( now ) rooted..
This is a very bad thing. The Real Stock ROM has palm rejection and all the drivers to make it work as a tool. So stock is the ideal but it is clearly not stock as my device supposedly came in the
box running 4.2 and with software and drivers to make it work properly with the pen. This has nothing. No software and the smallest amount of apps possible. Worse this is no custom ROM its on ( I think) as it would be the worst one ever and it was not rooted on arrival. I have no idea what happened before I got it. I may have made the mistake of rooting it really as I found out to my dismay there is no ROM support. So back to square one. I bought it ( very cheap for one of these ) "stuck and unable to go to the play store" and I did not realize until I got it, on a version of Android it was not meant for. Wacom is totally and woefully unhelpful in every way. They seem to want to quietly put this device behind them at the expense literally of their customers.
I have discussed this problem in another thread if more details on all this specific to this device are of interest.

Hello & welcome to xda-assist,
If you rooted the device you changed the system /kernel in the process, if root is all you done you should be able to unroot by using the unroot option in your root management application, if you did further changes like deleting system apps and so on it gets more complex, the best and easiest way to get back to the original state would be a copy of the latest firmware.. If it doesn't exist you're somewhat out of luck, please refer to this link for further help & information..

Thanks for the reply. So no way to get the extract the original firmware? I don't wish to un-root. The device was set to a very sad state of affairs when I got it, unrooted, with something very unlike the stock firmware and factory date reset not helping at all. Persistently locked into a lower version of Android than it was not meant for and not running the drivers or software it would seem I need to make it function properly that came with the device.
Basically it lead to my curiosity of how one goes about extracting or mining the data that is stored somewhere on the device if all I did was root. Which is all I did.
It should still be there. Basically how do I get to it?
The link takes me back to the forums for help, however I found no help there after much searching before I asked here but thanks

The link takes me back to the forums for help, however I found no help there after much searching before I asked here but thanks

The intended of xda-assist is to direct you to the most suitable board of xda, we do not solve issues for you or do technical support, please be patient, it often takes time for exotic devices / questions to be seen by someone who can give hints and answers..
Edit: but it's not that the original firmware is stored somewhere on the device by default where you can grab it and reinstall it..

Totally cool. It's a tough question.
The OG firmware thing is the toughest part to understand. Just wanted to make sure I was clear in my explanation and question.

Please help, I have no clue what I'm doing anymore. [Galaxy S5/Sprint]

I really have no clue what I'm doing or where to look, and I have no choice but to register here and ask a question that's probably already been answered. Sorry for creating a new thread, but there's just too many to sort through. I just wanted to try asking if anyone has a working download link for Odin that's not malware. All of the links I keep finding are either fake or have been removed by a mod, or are just flat out dead links. Whenever I search online for odin, I just keep finding mostly harmful links. I simply want to get rid of the bloatware on my phone that Sprint's been installing as of late. While I'm at it, I might as well ask if this guide's legit as well: https://theunlockr.com/2016/12/11/how-to-root-the-samsung-galaxy-s5-all-variantscf-root/ ? This is what I've been using for reference. I've rooted an HTC-Evo phone in the past and flashed a cyanogenmod rom over the stock one, so this isn't a completely foreign concept to me. However, I haven't messed with this stuff for a long time, and I just wanted to know if I'm looking in the right place, and I figured I should come to a trustworthy site like this one to ask about it.
heres a link, ill get back on the other stuff in a bit, but ther eisnt a one-and-done method for all firmwares available for this phone

sorry, i got tied up at work, what firmware are you on? settings/about phone/baseband
I really appreciate your response. I managed to root my device through Odin, and proceeded with installing TWRP and a LineageOS rom for my device.
