Hello folks,
I'm not an android developer & don't have much android technical experience.
I recently purchased a OnePlus 8T & I'm interested placing a custom ROM on it.
I would like to have nandroid backups of this device. Specifically, I'd like to backup the OS, OS settings, Apps, & App settings. I'd like to do this backup without a PC or internet connection; using only the device itself.
I originally planned on using TWRP because when I installed it on my Galaxy Note 4 the nandroid backup & restores were quick & simple.
I've been researching the use of TWRP on the 8T. An unofficial version of TWRP is available for the OnePlus 8T.
However, on the XDA Discord Server, some have suggested against installing TWRP on this device.
I did a keyword search "OnePlus 8T nandroid backup" & get these reports that suggest using TWRP: Nandroid Backup? & OnePlus 8T TWRP Recovery. With the same keyword search I find this article, Nandroid/Complete Phone Backup Or Similar Without TWRP?, that says to use Migrator that is a Magisk Module.
One person on the XDA Discord Sever also suggested Migrator. I haven't been able to find much on this. I do a keyword search & find only this post on XDA & the GitHub description. Some on XDA have reported trouble with this not working & people losing data. Although I see suggestions about performing a nandroid backup before using Migrator, I didn't see anything about this app itself having a nandroid backup feature.
These articles also suggests installing TWRP on the OnePlus 8T: Best Custom Roms For OnePlus 8T [Android 12]- Install Via TWRP & Comprehensive Guide to Install TWRP Recovery and Root Your OnePlus 8 / 8T.
Other search engine results for "nandroid backup" in general also say to use of CWM or TWRP. They include: What Is A Nandroid Backup and How Exactly Does It Work? & How to Create and Restore NANDroid Backup?.
Are these people all mistaken?
Why they are suggesting this, when other experts on the android OS are advising against it?
Then I started wondering if there was an alternate custom recovery option for this device. I found this article, Best Custom Recovery for Android devices 2021, that says there are 4 other custom recoveries available besides TWRP. They include: OFRP, SHRP, PBRP, RWRP. I briefly did a search to & found no info about their compatibility with the OnePlus 8T.
-OFRP, originally designed for the Xiaomi devices, for OnePlus there is only unofficial that's available for the Nord.
-SHRP, not available for the OnePlus 8T, only available for 6, 6T, & 6 Pro, according to this post.
-PBRP, is not available for the OnePlus 8T.
-RWRP, no information on this custom recovery being available for the OnePlus 8T.
So, from what I understand none of these are compatible with the OnePlus 8T.
Based on what I've gathered so far, it appears there is no stable custom recovery exists for the OnePlus 8T.
Is this right?
I have Titanium Backup. However, that doesn't do nandroid backups.
I did a search on Google Play for "nandroid backup" & found these apps: Alpha Backup Pro; Swift Backup; ROM Manager (ClockworkMod). When I observed the description for Alpha Backup Pro & Swift Backup I don't see anything about nandroid backups. ROM Manager doesn't specifically mention nandroid backups. However, it does say that it manages ROMs & installs ROMS. Is this basically a nandroid backup? One comment for this app says it requires CWM installed in the recovery of the device.
This article, How to Backup Android Device Completely suggests FlashFire, that it describes as "a multi-utility tool for rooted users. It allows a rooted Android user to perform multiple actions like wiping partitions, flashing ROMs and OTAs, and most stuff that only a recovery could do." The FlashFire description on Google Play has no reference to nandroid backups. Yet, it does say that it "offers full device backup and restore functionalities in several formats." Would that include nandroid?
Once again, I'd like to find a way to to easily & quickly perform a nanroid backup of the OnePlus 8T without a PC or internet connection. The backup would include: OS, OS settings, Apps, App settings (without data).
Any useful suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
thank you,
I can say nothing about Migrator, but you can backup/restore at least /data with TWRP.

As far as i know full stock OOS ROM backup (and especially restore) is problematic on 8T due to virtual a/b partitions.

It's not "problematic" if you do what I mentioned in https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...ect-8t-kebab-2021-09-04.4302449/post-85465241
In the "new" virtual a/b world of the 8T the equivalent of the "old" boot+system backup is now boot+dtbo+super.

I'm new to android and the first thing I'd like to do is to completely clone device's memory for later backups. Here is a list of questions I got after some reading:
1. I need to root my moto G to install PhilZ Touch 6 Recovery, right?
2. Do I need to also unlock bootloader to install PhilZ Touch 6 Recovery?
3. PhilZ Touch 6 Recovery is a ROM, right?
4. PhilZ ROM is some kind of a latest android OS, but with additional features like access to all files and some other tweaks?
5. Is the OS used in PhilZ ROM KitKat 4.4.2?
6. Does this ROM implicitly include a total backup to sdcard app and a file manager app?
7. Is nandroid app implicitly in PhilZ ROM, right?
7.1 If not, what backup app can I use to make a clone image of my moto g?
7.2. On the helium app google store webpage I found: "Helium is NOT available to Motorola devices. This is because Motorola phones have a bug that break Android's backup mechanism. Until this is fixed by Motorola, Helium will not work on those Androids."
So, is there any app, that can clone moto g?
7.3. Can, for example, nandroid do the job?
8. If I flash PhilZ ROM to my moto G, is it correct, that it will not update to newer OS versions automatically? How can I keep track of the updates?
9. How do I install apps to my device? I read, that some devices need busybox for that, so is it better to use busybox (or something else) and not just click install on google store?
10. What android apps are most popular/helpful as system utilities? (I know it sounds too broad, but maybe there are some MUST HAVE ones).
1. No, all you need is an unlocked bootloader
2. Yes ofc
3. & 4. NO! Its just a recovery with some nice features
5. LOL
As for your remaining questions, to make a backup, (which you have to do before unlocking bootloader), you can use the "adb backup" command. Google it for details.
8. If you flash any ROM whatsoever, you will certainly not receive OTAs from Motorola, since the ROM you flashed is not their software.
9. Only a few apps need busybox to work properly, and it's not totally necessary to have it.
10. There are no such apps, for me atleast.
But for rooted devices, I can recommend some : Greenify, Titanium Backup, and Xposed Installer.
P.S: before asking such questions, please try to read around, 80% of your answers are there. But since you're new to Android, I forgive you

In addition to the "adb backup" and nandroid (or TWRP, which is another recovery with its own format) backups, look into backing up the pds partition and NV items off the phone, it may be your only way to recover your IMEI and cellular service in some situations.

Thanks, Darkshado.
I found how to back up pds partition in FAQ (Q19: Lost IMEI ? : How to backup / restore PDS partition and why?), but nothing about NV items backup.
1. So, could you please confirm, that I need to backup both PDS and NV items, or PDS will be enough?
2. In the other tread you say, that "In Windows, make NV items backups with QPST and EFS Professional."
Do I need both "QPST" and "EFS Professional" to backup NV items, or any of them will work?
3. Could you, please, confirm the algorithm I should use to safely backup everything possible on my moto g:
3.1. use adb backup
3.2. root
3.3. backup pds partition
3.4. use QPST to backup NV items
You have a sound approach.
AFAIK Titanium Backup (Pro?) should be able to restore your pre-root adb backup.
I've picked up on the habit of backing up all the baseband settings I could, and in Qualcomm modem devices this includes NV (non-volatile) items. EFS Professional now supports both .qcn and CDMA Workshop text format NV backups so it should cover your bases nicely.
QPST and QXDM are leaked software, EFS Professional was made via reverse engineering. For our needs both serve the same purpose. One may work where the other fails. (I posted a list of skip items on the EFS Professional thread which could come in handy.)
If you want to backup *everything* on the phone, that's another process which involves forwarding adb's output to files. Check here and here.
Ok, I've tried different things, but it seems I'm stuck when trying to restore my app data for certain apps (mostly games) on crDroid 6.11 (Android 10). I'm restoring from an older Android 6 ROM. I would prefer not to root at this point.
I've tried:
ADB backup: I can create backup, but adb is stuck on the 7 Pro at the password prompt when trying to restore
Helium backup: Again, I can create backup on my old phone, and transfer to new phone. But Helium throws an error when trying to restore.
It seems I'm running out of options. I can simply not understand it should be so difficult to back up your app data for a few simple apps (games) and restore them on a new device without root.
I know there are options with root, and maybe I will end up rooting with Magisk just to be able to do this. But I still find it very strange that there is no easy tool to do this - or maybe there is and I don't know it.
Any suggestions are very welcome. Thanks!
I cracked my Pixel 4XL, and have a brand new replacement beside it. I'd like to completely clone the damaged one to the new one, preserving root, all personal files, settings, applications - everything. Ideally in one single file.
Is there a way to accomplish this? I remember some sort of system image backup being possible a few years ago.
Maybe this is a better way to phrase my question:
Is TWRP a good option for this?
You can use TWRP to create a NANDroid backup.
Look inside here:
TWRP 101: How to Make a NANDroid Backup & Restore Your Entire Phone
A custom recovery is a very powerful tool. You can flash ZIPs that modify your Android device in ways that not even root can accomplish, and of course you can use it to install custom ROMs. But when you're applying all of these cool mods, there's always a chance that something could go wrong...

Will this work on a Pixel 4XL running android 11?
Try it, then you'll know it.
Hello everyone, hope I will find the answers as I properly did my research and did not find as much info as i wanted.
So, long short story, 2 devices, Pixel 3, bot with root access and custom roms, my question is: Can I backup entirely one rom from another (containing the google pay and google apps) and restore it on the other device, will cards work? From my knowledge, for example, some data is encrypter/stored in some places or some way that an app like Titanium Backup would not restore it totally so, would a total backup and restore from one phone to another work?
Thanks!

Definitely not possible with Titanium Backup. TB has not been updated since 2019, and restore on recent Android versions does not work properly. I use Swift Backup, and have used it to move apps from one phone to another (the phones both had the same ROM). You might have problems if you have different ROMs on the two phones. I don't use Google Pay, so can't comment on it. I didn't have a problem with the apps I did restore.
Update: it works using twrp (backup and restore only /data)

What Android version are you on? I thought TWRP did not work on Pixel 3 Android 11. If you have TWRP that works on 11, where can I get it?

Hi, I'm on version 10, only twrp and magisk (keeping as simple and debloated as possible)
I have a backup meant for LineageOS 18.1 (Honor 6x phone). I was planning on moving to AOSP 11. Unfortunately, I've hitherto been completely unable to root the device. Can I use a twrp data backup of the former once I install AOSP 11?
