Question Extending the uses of the outer screen - Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3

According to the Samsung rep I spoke to, there are only certain widgets that will work on the outer screen. I'm wondering if that's a defined list and will always be just that, or is it a matter of devs being able to add other apps' functionality on the outer screen as well in time.
A couple of examples that come to mind -
Maps navigation using the outer screen
Quick replies on texting apps. Whatsapp has reply templates and I use those a lot for standard replies. Would be real cool to not have to open the phone unless it's to type a proper reply.
I use Gmaps on the phone to navigate, and having an extra-long and relatively delicate screen open at all times isn't ideal. It just seems intuitive that the 2" screen could show nav instructions the way it does on the notifications shade.

That would be nice, but it's up to Samsung. Or maybe could be done with root in the future.

It's loosely possible now by spoofing one of the existing packages. The reason Samsung Health was selected is that it was the easiest one to replace because you can uninstall the app. With root, it would be possible to override the other widgets without causing a collision, too.
You would think Samsung will eventually publish some sort of API for it. They are big on that.

Could you explain the bit about Samsung Health? Not sure where that's coming from. I've noticed Samsung has the jetpack windowmanager library in their dev notes that recognizes the fold state so apps can make use of Flex mode. I'm assuming it's a matter of time that they also do something similar for the outer screen, given that it's their first device with (a somewhat usable) one.
I've not been on Samsung since my S2 about a decade ago so not sure how dev-friendly and quick they now are.

If you look into the code, that uses the package names for Samsung Health. I assume it's on some sort of whitelist.

Moleskine Journal

Hello everyone, Moleskine Journal app is finally released on Samsung Apps ( I only found it available on Spain's app market for now) and supposedly it is going to be exclusively on Samsung devices for 6 months. It might not replace S Note or Lecturenotes for everyone, but I found it to be quite handy and useful for quick sketches/notes. I'm a big fan of Moleskine and been waiting for this app since it was announced in August. Hope you guys will like it.

How has no one thanked you yet? There is a thread of guys waiting on this
Thank you, I'm glad to see other users making use of this app. I wonder when it will be publicly available in the US and other countries.
Moleskine Journal for the Note 10.1 and Landscape mode
Thanks silverbladef
Upon reading your post I've seen that actually in Samsung apps (Spain) there is it, but only selecting as device the Note and the Note2 and not the Note 10.1.
Hopefully there would be soon a slightly different "tablet" version of the app since, it seems to me, the one for the Note works only in portrait mode and a tablet user should be able to work in landscape mode too, as it can be seen in this document by Moleskine.

Thanks, works great.
thankyou!
Amazing ! I Know it's no S Note but amazing to have
It seems to be a special Samsung version that requires touchwiz to work.
Does fc when opening on CM10 based rom.
Update
The app has been updated to v1.1 and now it is compatible with the Note 10.1 (portrait mode included.) I tried to search for it in the Samsung App Store but no results came up, so you have to go to the "Best S Pen Apps" section and you should be able to see it there.

Great! Thanks silverbladef for the heads up!
The new version (1.1) is finally usable with the GNote 10.1 as it can work in both portrait and landscape mode.
I've tried it (for about half an hour) and my first impression is that there's very great potential but also some work to do... (see "cons" later in this post).
Yet I find it the most simple and effective note taking app amongst the ones I've tried so far.
It has almost all of the essential tools I judge as important and necessary for a S-Pen enabled tablet and some more.
Some of them are:
Free hand pen writing with pressure sensitivity.
Quick commands to change the pen/brush/pencil size/color/transparency
Text box insertion (and editing function at a later time)
Quick tool to free-hand select part of the ink writing or some text box to copy or move it to another position.
Quick way to use image/ink writing or text clips saved in "the pocket" to use them later, also in a different notebooks (this feature is rather unique for note taking apps and could be very useful for some type of usage!).
Some of the cons I've found so far:
There's still some excessive lag in opening the notebooks, in executing some commands and in navigating through pages.
Lack of some custom settings.
Automatic saving process is not fully reliable (i.e. even if almost always the notebook is automatically saved on exit, in some cases during the tests I've made, it wasn't saved and I haven't seen a command to manually save it...)
To summarize I think that the app needs some more testing and streamlining to be used with a 10.1 tablet, but, if the developer goes on to work on and improve it, it will probably soon become one of the best note taking apps (together with my presently favorite one that's LectureNotes).
What I liked most is the ratio between the effectiveness of the available tools and the simplicity of the UI and of the settings.
Yet to improve further the app I think that some few settings should be addedd (i.e. to create custom pens/brushes, to set the pressure sensitivity level or to create more custom templates).
I agree with you. As a big fan of Moleskine, this app probably would never replace S Note for me. I use it if i wanted to sketch or write something quickly with the same feel of the physical journals I posses of. It needs a lot of improvements to be done, a better reliable back up system, and autosaving for sure. One thing I noticed is the pencil/pen setting always defaults to a thicker kind of pen and I have to readjust it every time I open a notebook, frustrating.
I really hope they continue to develop this app, but it has some serious issues. It is soooo SLOW! When a page has any significant amount of writing or drawing on it, it takes ages to load the page, or switch to a new page in a book. It must be storing all the lines as vectors, because even after erasing all the lines with the eraser tool, the page still takes forever to load. Even with a blank book, it takes a couple of seconds to switch to a new page.
The color picker lets you choose a transparency value for a brush, but it doesn't work except for the marker tool, but only if you change transparency, and then adjust brush size.
With a graph paper book, switching from landscape to portrait will mess up the graph paper and make it not square. You have to re-select the graph paper background again to get it back to normal.
The brush size will reset itself when switching from landscape to portrait.
When doing small details or letters at a medium to slow speed, they are automatically deleted.
I like the idea of this app, but right now it really stinks, usability-wise, I'm surprised they released it in its current state.
password problem
Since the update my password doesn't work and I can't open any password protected books. Anyone else have this? Any way of getting into the book?

[GRIPE][Q] Notifications

I just got a SW2 Open Box at BestBuy. They even had a Black Metal one (Which is what I wanted) even when most other places seem to be out of them. It seems perfect except apparently, someone shortened the band. It fits me, but I would prefer it to be a bit looser on my arm.
At any rate, I am amazed to find out that you need to install notification apps. I would think this would be included by default.
I got a phone call, and the watch did absolutely nothing. Yeah, OK there are call handlers (official and unofficial), but this should be a default (configurable) function for a "Smart" Watch. It's kinda like buying a phone, and then being told to go look on the Play Store for a Dialer. (Oh, You want the number '5' on your dialer? -- That's an in-app purchase -- Grrr!).
OK, So I can deal with D/L'g a few official Sony apps for Gmail, Messages, etc., but there isn't one for Google+ (and/or Hangouts).
In fact, AFAIK, I cannot do it at all without giving an unknown developer access to my notifications.
I see that some of the notification app developers are active here, and that is a good thing, and I am reading through this forum, but what I would like to see what the consensus here is for a good, simple (preferably free, since I feel it should have already been included) notify app?
(And, yes, I do support the developers. I have already bought Speedometer for SW2, and others.)
The SW2 is really nice looking, and even without a mic/speaker, there are lots of apps/watch faces for it, but I am kind wishing I had held out for a Android Wear device.
I will say that unless you can get a really good deal on one, or want it only for very minimal functionality beyond a basic watch, I would recommend people hold out for a real Android Wear device.
Sony --- at least write a Google+/Hangouts notification App before you abandon this thing.
Notification on Android Wear are the worst I've ever seen. It works with very few applications. maybe later but for now it is very very bad

The app devs don't have access to your notifications. Where on Earth did you hear that?
As far as Wear goes, out of the +10 smartwatches I own, the one running Wear was the only one I ever returned. I returned it because I found it offered less than even a number of cheap Chinese Gear clones and had even worse battery. And out of those +10, the SW2 is my daily. Better battery (my worst run was +2 days), readable in more conditions, install only the notifications functions YOU want (Wear enables notifications for everything by default), and supports more Android versions than Wear. All you lose is voice commands/search and that's about it.
The devs technically have permission to read your notifications if the App has Internet access. You can find an app that doesn't though, or revoke the permission of one that does. I like the choice the sw2 provides for these apps. Sony doesn't have to do everything for us. If that's what you want get an iwatch.
True but his was more of a blanket statement.
To answer the actual question, I use WatchIt! https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=se.petersson.watch
It's free, works well for me.

Yeah, this is what I meant, not that they actually do.
Also, I was not criticizing the watch in general. I did my homework, and I knew Android Wear devices were out.
As Lokifish Marz, I like the display -- on all the time, and I have never been in a condition where it was not easily readable.
It was also well supported with lots of apps, and more elegant looking than some of the plastic Android Wear devices or Chinese BT watches.
I also paid less than half what the cheapest Android Wear device costs.
OK -- Now for the honesty -- It was actually the Nixie watch faces that made this a "Got-to-have" for me. I'm a Geek, and I built a VFD Tube clock kit as one of my first soldering projects as a kid. I'd buy a real Nixie clock kit, but I really don't need just a plain clock these days. (This is what I use for a "clock" these days: http://linuxslate.com/Review_RCA_7in_Android_Internet_Music_System.html)
The original rant was caused by the fact that there was no "official" (Sony) Google+/Hangouts notification app, when there were certain others that I do not use.
I have installed the free SmartWatch2 Notifier, and it does what I need.
Now I am off to find some more geeky Clock Widgets, or possibly make some, thanks to the thread on this forum.
Thanks to all that responded.
Did you buy that SW2 in San Antonio?
No;
A BestBuy in Florida.
They had a silver one, too.
Also an open box. The silver open box was marked $171, where as new ones were $149.
I guess you were paying to have a previous purchaser test it for you, and loose the accessories, manual etc. so that you do not have to go through the effort of loosing them yourself.

[App][4.3+] Sesame Lock Screen / App Switcher: quick launch everything!

Howdy. My friend Steve and I made Sesame so we wouldn’t have to swipe around looking for things anymore.
It puts your favorite apps in a ranked list on the lock screen along with a keyboard that can filter to pretty much anything in 1 or 2 touches. What’s cool about Sesame is that it learns from your behavior and makes new shortcuts deep into native apps.
This thing is like a power tool for Android. It takes some getting used to but it’s worth it.
Shortcuts it makes today
All your apps (ranked by how often you use them)
All contacts w/ 1 touch to text, call, or email (WhatsApp too!)
Websites you visit (but not when browsing incognito)
Music library and new stuff you listen to (Spotify only atm but expanding soon)
You can Quick Search: Maps, Waze, Netflix, Spotify, Google Music, Chrome, Play Store, Yelp and YouTube
It makes shortcuts back to your searches
Hangouts conversations, including groups
Alarms you set
Uber/Lyft see live ride options w/ ETA & Surge Pricing
Smart Keyboard
The keyboard is designed to pull things up fast. It’s not swipe, it’s faster. You don’t need to type full words. It understands shorthand, so if I want to play music by Ratatat I can type ’S’ for Spotify then ‘R’ and 'Spotify: Ratatat' will come right up. It also learns from your choices so next time only ’S’ might get the job done.
Lock Screen and/or App Switcher
The Lock Screen version displays your notifications and keeps your existing security 100% intact. Note: some device types see display issues when transitioning from Sesame to the system lock screen. If that happens, you can still use it as an app switcher.
There’s no registration and none of the data leaves your device.
It’s still got some rough edges. If you do try it, give it a shot for a few days. Our test users said it took some getting used to but they’d never go back now. We try to get out 2-3 new versions a week. So please give feedback, we want to make it better!
It’s free in the play store, check it out!
Will take it for a spin and give feedback later. thanks.

So far so good. I think it's a great idea, and you made the idea into a fantastic app, but I for myself noticed that I hardly launch apps or anything from the lock screen, since I automatically unlock my phone with the fingerprint.

What if you could launch it by swiping from the edge of the screen? I'm thinking the upper right edge is easily reachable and out of the way. You could swipe and pull down to pull Sesame up right away.
Lots of people just aren't interested in changing their lock screen but I do think there's some potential here. Thanks!

That sounds good, however, maybe you could give the option to choose from where to swipe, upper right is for me a no go, since I've got a six inch Huawei Mate 8, it would still be reachable but not convenient.

Roger. That can be done.
I think we're going to try to make the Lock Screen pretty first. Something like this.
There are lock screen apps w/ 50MM users that are basically rotating pretty pictures. They get around all the lock screen compatibility problems by building their own security then having the user turn off the system one. This isn't 100% secure, which is why we didn't go that way. But it'd keep out anyone except a motivated hacker. And if the system security is OFF we can build a seamless experience. So maybe that'd open Sesame up to a wider audience. It'd be totally optional, you could still keep the system security if you wanted.
Thanks for the feedback. It def moves our thinking. Let me know if there's anything else we can improve.

Yes, I understand, but you are right you are not going to get the audience you want.
Take for example hilocker I've been watching the locker growing but then it grew slower and slower. however it was not only the app which wasn't always running smoothly, but also the little to non response of the dev.
The features however integrated are great.
Giving the user the option to decide to keep security or to have a better experience at the cost of some security, is a good idea.

Mom friendly mode?

So I'm trying to get my mom into the smartphone world. She's older, rates a negative value on "tech savvy" scale. I've bought a Samsung on5 for this project. What is the best method to setup a phone in "mom mode"?
Ideally phone calls and video calls... No texting (one step at a time)
I'm trying to make it as few screens or icons as possible to avoid confusion. I know you can do contact shortcuts for calling. But I've never wanted or needed to setup super extreme easy grandma mode before so I'm out of my element.
Any advise would be appreciated.

If you had bought a Xaomi device, some versions of MIUI comes with a " child mode" which could've been useful in your case
But what you can do is uninstall any useless bloatware. Then temporarily freeze/hide any app that you don't want her using yet. Just leave the basics like the dialer and such.
Place them all on a single homescreen then lock the desktop (Nova & Go Launcher both offer this function). That way she can always find what she's looking for and her icons won't get deleted or misplaced accidentally.
Also, you could hide the app drawer as well (or just remove the app drawer icon from the home screen). That way she'll only have access to the apps you've placed on the single homescreen. There's also the issue of her accidentally messing up/accessing some settings from the QS panel.
But that's something I'll speak on only if it's a concern to you.
Doesn't samsung devices have easy mode? A quick google brought me this.
Hope I can help u out in this issue
MINIMIZE:
Start the process by reducing the complexity. Uninstall apps that your mom is gonna never use. Have the right no. of homescreens with the absolutely necessary apps and widgets set up.
LAUNCHER:
Wiser and Necta are two launchers perfectly suiting your need. They both provide large and simple icons in a clutter-free environment for easy access.
BACKUP:
Right from contacts to images and files on your phone needs to be backed up. Dont ever live with the fear of losing your data.
SETTINGS:
Rest of the changes lie in the Settings app.
Simple Pattern lock
Disable all Auto-Correct options
Choose the desired font size
And others too...
And there u have...'A MOM-FRIENDLY PHONE':good:

Yep. They have. Samsung Devices (including ON 5) have an 'easy mode' in settings app to greatly simplify its use. Xiaomi devices have 'Lite mode' for the same purpose.
I bought the on5 because it was cheap and since it's experiment I didn't want to go crazy. She only uses the phone for calls... No text.. Basically I wanted a way to video call... One of the big problems is except for me and my daughter who have android phones, the rest of the family are iPhone users.. So will have to use duo for video calls.
The rom I installed is pre rooted with pixel launcher and a bunch of cool stuff.... It's actually impressive considering the phones limited power. Useless for this particular instance.
I'll try and set it up and see how the mom experiment goes. Hopefully she won't get overwhelmed.
I sincerely appreciate all the replies! Thank you guys for taking the time.
If any one else has additional details or advice, keep it coming. Thanks again.

Since those 'cool stuff' find no place in this instance you can try flashing AOSP rom. This reduces the complexity of the Samsung's UI.
WhatsApp, FB Messenger, IMO, Skype, Google Hangouts are other options to consider for making video calls between iOS and Android
get a samsung and use the easy home launcher built in to samsung phone..
Samsung phones have easy mode. You can try that.

Question Has anyone tried the two cover-screen launchers?

Wondering what the actual difference is between them. I am hesitant to go deep into trying them as I'm still setting up other stuff on the phone, and I don't want to bork something, but eventually I'll probably try them both. Was just wondering before I do what the actual pros/cons are of them. They seem to... imply they do similar things, but the examples are few and far between (especially on the samsprung one).
both quite buggy and sometimes work and sometimes dont....nice idea for both but not the easiest to navigate....gave up in the end as both just not quite there yet....give them a try and if you dont like them just uninstall.....simples...HTH

You can also use the Good luck app and download multistar and it allows you to put a widget that holds five icons that you can activate on the cover screen for the galaxy flip 4. When you download the app just click on the iHeart foldable and it'll be right there

SamSprung TooUI never required deleting Samsung Health and could never be added to the widget list. It was the Z Flip 3 Launcher, which was remade into SamSprung, that could replace Samsung Health to run as a widget. Somehow, a year later and having posted it everywhere, we still get people asking why SamSprung is not in the widget list and why they had to remove Samsung Health.

Both have very extensive bug reporting features, or at least I assume because most of what I add has been mimicked. I can't speak for the other one, but if you reported it on SamSprung, then it was investigated.

Wondering what the actual difference is between them. I am hesitant to go deep into trying them as I'm still setting up other stuff on the phone, and I don't want to bork something, but eventually I'll probably try them both. Was just wondering before I do what the actual pros/cons are of them. They seem to... imply they do similar things, but the examples are few and far between (especially on the samsprung one).

https://github.com/SamSprung/SamSprung-TooUI/wiki has a bunch of information and being the first of its kind to release, SamSprung was used in a lot of videos on how to run apps on the cover screen (https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=SamSprung). Most of the videos are a bit dated, so again there is no deleting Health and no widget (Android 11 loophole). It gives you the general idea, though.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/samsprung-tooui-cover-screen-home-free-zf4.4484079/ is the thread for SamSprung on Z FLip 4. I can't really give you a comparison, though. The short version is that I started an open-source project to compensate for a shortcoming that got played off as an "original" idea for profit. Rather than stress about it, I ignored the author.
Best thing to do is try any that seem interesting and if there is one you like that has an issue, see if you can get it fixed or deal with it before moving on to your second choice. The only one that really "is what it is" is good lock because they are affiliated with Samsung and still hijacking the widgets. For some, that is an advantage. For others, it's restrictive.
I have tried CoverScreen OS from @jagan2 and it`s really as best as it can get!
It transforms the coverscreen to a full fuctional ... mini phone.
