Help: OTA Update bricked my rooted phone - OnePlus 8T Questions & Answers

;Just going to spell out exactly what I've done and what's happening, partly to get my own story straight.
KB2005 running Android version 11.0.9.9.KB055A
Rooted with Magisk, TWRP not installed
This morning, got OP8T Security update for 11.0.10.10.KB05AA
I read the instructions on how to OTA update rooted phones, and followed them carefully:
Spoiler: Step-by-step description of my actions
Restored Stock Boot Image in Magisk
Pressed "Uninstall Magisk" button
Selected "Restore images"
Installed OTA Update, but did not reboot
Restored Root in Magisk Manager
Pressed "Install" button
Selected "Install" option
Selected "Install to Inactive Slot (After OTA)"
Selected "Let's Go" to confirm
Once complete, selected "Reboot" button
After rebooting, my wifi no longer worked.
Checked Settings > System
Still said 11.0.10.10 Update available
Checked Magisk
Don't recall exactly what I did next
I may have restored stock image in Magisk to retry the OTA update
Then the OTA Update rebooted my phone
What's happening now:Phone boots to recovery:
Boot reason:
Boot reason: fs_mgr_mount_all
Unable to parse kernel log. For more debug information,
adb pull /mnt/vendor/op2/rbr_log
or pull op2.img

>adb pull /mnt/vendor/op2/rbr_log
adb: error: failed to get feature set: device unauthorized.
This adb server's $ADB_VENDOR_KEYS is not set
Try 'adb kill-server' if that seems wrong.
Otherwise check for a confirmation dialog on your device.
When I reboot to fastboot, the screen says:

Comments:
- stock recovery doesn't support adb connectivity
- I also lost bootloader/fastboot connectivity after the 10.10 update, but it was a simple matter of updating the driver in Windows (Device Manager>Update driver for the device>Browse my computer>Let pick from list>Android bootloader interface).
- you may be able to get the phone to start if you restore the stock 10.10 boot image (attached, md5: 6fa5cc81a8e7e2878ac220e4216d4a52)
- otherwise you may need to use the MSM tool.

Because I'm now double- and triple-checking everything before I make a change...
Driver version is 11.0.0.0 - is that the latest? And, if not, where can I get the update?
[Also, the driver says manufacturer is "LeMobile" -- is that correct?]

Oh thank gd - fastboot devices is now listing my device...
(I also noticed an new release of platform-tools on developer.android.com which I installed)
I feel so much more hopeful

I have the Google USB drivers installed. See https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/...t-fastbootd-driver-guide-for-windows.4282241/

Hokay, so, I've been proceeding very deliberately, trying to look at all the options before taking action...
After updating my PC's driver & adb, I was able to
Code:
fastboot boot twrp.img
Poking around at the various menu options, without (yet) making any changes (I think)
Thru TWRP's terminal, I grabbed md5sums for the various boot.imgs on my devivce, and compared them to the ones previously pulled or downloaded to my PC:
/dev/block/by-name/boot_a matched 11.0.9.9.KB055A patched by Magisk
/dev/block/by-name/boot_b matched the stock 10.10 boot image attached above
/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/boot same as boot_a
Also, TWRP's Reboot menu said Current Slot = A
Following BillGoss's advice above (which hasn't led me astray yet), Reboot > Slot B seems like the logical next step. Right?
(What does "Fix Recovery Bootloop" under Advanced do?)

(done) Can anyone share 11.0.8.12.KB05AA boot.img
Boot loop after incremental OTA (magisk restore image and repatch). So... can someone Success upgraded share the boot.img ? Thanks.
forum.xda-developers.com
I have exact same experience when update to 11.0.8.12.
Incremental OTA will not install if your system are modified, but your boot_a is patched, i guess you magisk patch inactive slot before OTA reboot, some how it patched current slot, maybe flash stock 11.0.9.9 boot.img to slot_a can solve it.

I have no idea what "Fix Recovery Bootloop" does. I've never had a recovery bootloop and that option wasn't present on my old phone.
Anyway, two things you can try:
- boot slot b and see if the system comes up cleanly now that it has stock 10.10 boot image.
- if that fails see if booting slot a comes up on 9.9 again.
If neither work it's back to MSM to reset things.

@cheshyre, you keep writing "11.0.9.9.KB055A" which I've assumed to be
"11.0.9.9.KB05AA". Can you please confirm what version you are actually running?

You're correct, my original notes did say 11.0.9.9.KB05AA;
I must've transcribed it incorrectly somewhere along the line and then kept recopying the truncated number.
I think I'm going to try booting to Slot B, which appears to have stock 11.0.10.10.KB05AA, unless somebody tells me not to very soon...

I dealt with this issue on my 3T by simply never updating it; still running build A3000_28_170104;
If AT&T hadn't forced me to update my device so they can retire 3G, I'd prolly still be using it

Changed the situation, at least...
As I said I was going to do above, I fastbooted into TWRP and selected Reboot Slot B
Now I'm stuck on a screen which says
QUALCOMM CrashDump Mode
--------------------------
de-verity device corrupted Force Dump
kernel_restart
Even long-pressing the power button won't turn it off.
(Optimistically) Next steps?

(Finally managed to power off my phone by holding both power and volume-up)

Yep, power+vol up gets you out of CrashDump.
You could try booting slot a.

So far, every reboot takes me back to QUALCOMM CrashDump, even with vol buttons pressed.
adb devices & fastboot devices show nothing.
I have a PC utility called USBLogView which shows all Plug & Unplug events.
My "Device Description" is no longer "OnePlus 8T" or "ADB Device" -- it's listed as "QUSB_BULK_SN:989F2271"
However, the device serial # is still being listed.
Going to try some other driver tests, but I'm nearly out of spoons for tonight.
Thanks for all your help so far, and any further suggestions are more than welcome.

One procedural "suggestion": use the reply button to respond to posts. That way the author receives a notification of your reply. Also use @ in front of user names so that they get notified when mentioned.
The other: you'll need to install the Qualcomm USB driver to use the MSM tool. That will allow the PC to recognise your phone in EDL mode and the MSM tool can reset your phone.
Go to the MSM Tool thread for all the details.

Thank you so much for all your help.
Trying to find the correct firmware version right now (most links & repos only have older builds)
Which do you think I should use, since 1 slot had 9.9, and the other had 10.10?

What you're running now has no bearing on MSM as it gets completely overwritten. I use the latest KB05AA MSM Tool.
And, you are still not using the Reply button

I'll take this over to the other thread, I suppose

It's not the button pressing that creates the notification, but the inclusion of the user name in the Quote tag. Ditto for the use of User tag when mentioning people with @+username.

[Q] Bootloader locked after OTA XNPH05Q

Hi all,
I just installed the OTA update for XNPH05Q. My bootloader was previously unlocked, TWRP installed and rooted.
Now that the OTA is installed I wanted to re-root (SuperSU Pro Survival didn't work), but when I boot into recovery mode I only get the default 'Cyanogen Recovery' and trying to flash the SuperSU binary fails with 'Signature File unavailable' error.
Any idea what went wrong? My phone was heavily customized and I would really try to avoid the hassle of going through the full process to unlock the bootloader again... It will take several hours to restore everything, and since I'm using some sideloaded apps I don't even know if I will find them again - and now I can't even use Titanium anymore to backup them, the OTA happened already
Thanks for your input!
Your bootloader is still unlocked, it only restored stock recovery. So you only need to flash twrp, you won't lose any data doing that. And to stop the stock recovery getting flashed when installing OTA, go to Settings > Developer options. Then disable the 'Update recovery with system updates' option.
Thanks, that made my day! I'm currently travelling and have no access to a computer, but I'll flash TWRP again as soon as I'm back home and proceed from there.

You can use Flashify to flash TWRP directly from your phone.

If you have fastboot set-up you can run the command for oem unlock again and it shouldn't wipe anything. Happened with me After going to XNPH05Q my bootlocked got relocked as well and I was trying to flash cm12 and I couldnt figure out for the life of me why it would keep booting to fastboot and recovery wasnt working. So when all else failed and I said eff it I dont care if it wipes, I re-ran the command (after checking bootloader status and seeing that it got locked) and I was able to boot up just fine without any data loss.
That's just my personal experience though.
I did that because even after flashing different version of TWRP recovery and different ROMs my phone kept booting straight to fastboot.
I just arrived back home (literally stepped out of the airport 45 minutes ago) and as of this moment, my OPO is up & rooted again, with all data intact. Thanks for your great support!!!

Can you please tell how did you flashed TWRP again, as I have the same issue as you had.
Sure. I first had to tell my PC to use the correct drivers again - basically after installing the OTA, Windows recognized the phone anew and used the default drivers. So go to your device manager (Windows-Key + 'Break' -> device manager), search for your phone (I don't remember in which category it showed up, but just browse all until you find 'A00001'. Right klick, select 'change driver'. Go to 'have disk' and select 'ADB' from the list on the left, then on the right you should find the driver that is already installed [given that you had an ADB driver already, otherwise check this site for the driver download: http://twrp.me/devices/oneplusone.html].
To check if it worked, open a command line [Windows-Key + R, write cmd in the field and hit enter]. Now type "adb devices" [enter] and if [device ID] (some random numbers) is listed in the menu, all is fine.
Download the most recent TWRP image file from http://dl.twrp.me/bacon/ and save it somewhere.
Now, in the same command line enter "adb reboot bootloader", this will put your phone in fastboot mode.
Once this is done, check if the driver is still recognizing your phone by entering "fastboot devices", and check if the device is still listed.
If this checks out, enter "fastboot flash recovery [FULL PATH TO RECOVERY FILE]" -> e.g. "fastboot flash recovery c:\Users\viking84\Desktop\twrp-2.8.6.0-bacon.img"
This will take a couple minutes (3-4 for me).
Once it's done, enter "fastboot reboot" in the console, and your phone will reboot into recovery (if it doesn't, just switch it back of and restart it with power + volume up to enter the recovery menu). From there you can just install the SuperSU binary as you're used to.
Thx for the detailed step guide... Will perform these steps today.

I have successfully re-rooted by device using the above procedure. The only difference was even after flashing recovery and installing SuperSU through TWRP I was not able to see SuperSU app in phone, but then I went to Playstore and downloaded it from there and it worked!
So thank you for your help and detailed procedure!

[HOW-TO] Root BNTV450 Nook 7 (ST16C7BNN) using Magisk.

Root your "Barns & Noble Nook 7" BNTV450 using Magisk's Patch Boot Image File option.
BE CAREFUL!
There are always risks involved when you start messing around with a device.
If something goes wrong, you may end up with a non-working "bricked" device.
This is especially true when you start flashing partitions. (In this case boot.)
Disclaimer
I am not responsible for your non-working "bricked" devices.
I have a few of my own.
Requirements
Barns & Noble Nook 7" BNTV450
A computer with working adb and fastboot
USB cable
WiFi connection
Magisk Manager (Link below)
Stock boot image (Link below)
Tested on:
BNTV450-v1.0.2-20161230 Security patch October 5, 2016
BNTV450-v2.0.4-20170927 Security patch August 5, 2017
BNTV450-v2.0.5-20170110 Security patch November 5, 2017 ota update
macOS 10.13.x
Windows 7 Pro
Steps
Unlock bootloader
Boot Magisk patched boot image
Pull stock boot and recovery images from device
Use Magisk to patch pulled stock image
Test and flash new patched boot image
Notes:
Google updates were needed to get everything working correctly.
PlayServices and WebView
Mac users. As with some other devices, I had to unplug and plugin the USB cable between some of the fastboot commands.
fastboot flash boot patched_boot.img and fastboot boot bntv4-recovery.img
Magisk:
There have been a lot of changes in Magisk since I originally used it to root.
Way too many to mention so, just the basics that apply to this device.
Newer versions of Magisk use the Download directory instead of creating and using the MagiskManager directory.
Some apps search for this directory and used it to determine if the device is rooted.
If you previously used Magisk to root and have a MagiskManager directory, you will want to delete it.
To update Magisk Manager.
Use the update option, it will download and install the newest version.
To update Magisk.
The safest way is to patch the boot image again. Test and flash.
The Direct Install option works but, may lead to a non-desirable outcome.
To uninstall Magisk.
Test boot your original boot image to make sure it works.
Check with Magisk Manager, it should say Magisk not installed.
If so, then flash your stock boot image back using fastboot.
If your stock boot image will not boot, then you are stuck with Magisk patched boot images.
Hardware Keys:
Power and Volume Up = Recovery Mode
Power and Volume Down = Factory Mode
It will show on the bottom Left (Sideways on the top left) Detecting boot mode. With bootloader unlocked it flashes this message very fast so you might not see it.
I still can not produce the same results continuously across mine. The newer ones, that came with v2.0.5 seem to work but, the older ones still it's a 50 % chance if I can get it to work. The bricked ones, do not seem to register the key combo on boot.

Unlock Bootloader
THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY.
Unlocking the bootloader WILL wipe and Factory Reset your device. Make sure to copy, backup and logout of everything before you begin.
Note: adb and fastboot need to be installed and working.

Unlock bootloader?
If you unlock the bootloader, you will be able to install custom operating system software on this phone.
A custom OS is not subject to the same testing as the original OS, and can cause your phone and installed applications to stop working properly.
To prevent unauthorized access to your personal data, unlocking the bootloader will also delete all personal data from your phone(a "factory data reset").
Press the Volume UP/Down buttons to select Yes or No.
Yes (Volume UP):Unlocking(may void warranty).
No (Volume Down): Do not unlock bootloader.
After it returns to fastboot mode, use the power button to turn off, unplug it from computer and then turn on.
It will reboot a few times, including an Erasing... screen.
Once device reboots, run through the initial setup.
Note: Sometimes mine would get stuck on the nook .... animation screen. Give it a few minutes (I wait at least 5 minuets) then power off and power back on.

volume button does not react
Hi
unlocking does not work
As mentioned in the other discussion, the volume up button does not seem to react and so the unlocking does not work. Also one user suggested using the reset button after pressing the volume up button for the unlock; that also does not work for me
Do u have any other suggestions to unlock ?;

I never ran into this problem. So short answer - No.
Can you point me to that other discussion?
What do you get if you run fastboot oem lks
fastboot oem unlock is supported on this device. You could give that command a try and see if there is a difference.
Not sure what you have tried.
I would start with "Factory Reset" in stock recovery. Skip through the initial setup and try again.
Note: Developer option menu has a toggle at the top, make sure it is turned On.

Volume up button not recognised while fastboot unlock
Hi
Here is the discussion thread that I was referring to where people are stuck with unresponsive volume up button for fastboot unlock
https://forum.xda-developers.com/nook-7/help/nook-rootable-t3510289
I didn't do the factory reset. So maybe I will do that and see if it works.
unlock not working
Hi
Just to further update you on your reply; i did a factory reset and tried to unlock the bootloader but i get to the same problem; the volume button does not respond; so stuck with the message 'press the volume up button to unlock the bootloader'
I did the fastboot oem lks and that commands executes well and it gives me a OK output.
Cheers & New year greetings!
Any update on the unlock issue
Hi
Is there any update on the unlock issue i reported some time back? My last update on this was executing the command => 'I did the fastboot oem lks and that commands executes well and it gives me OK output.'
not sure if my last update was interpreted in the right way; it does nothing when i type fastboot oem lks except saying it is OK (which i suppose is the expected output of fastboot oem lks). So i do not know how to get around the volume keys not being recognised to go further in unlocking
I still can not use the volume keys for the unlock as it does not seem to react. just stuck a bit on this
@arrmusic I guessed it it looked more like this.
Code:
fastboot oem lks
...
(bootloader) lks = 1
OKAY [ 0.000s]
finished. total time: 0.000s
lks = 0 would be unlocked.
I am looking for a way to un-brick these. I think that may be the best way to correct the button problem also.
What os version are you running? (BNTV450-vx.x.x-20xxxxx)
What do you get when you run fastboot flashing get_unlock_ability ?
Tested a few things tonight.
I was NOT able to re-lock the bootloader on either of my rooted devices.(BNTV450-v2.0.4)
Found some more inconsistencies with power and volume key boot combinations. (Among other things.)
"FAILED (remote: not support on security)" apparently is not just for unlocked devices.

not able to unlock yet
Hi
Many thanks for your reply.
I seem to have the software version v1.0.2;
I tried to find by googling v2.0.4 but i am not able to find that security update anywhere to download; do you have the v2.0.4 file? can i have it somehow?
I ran the commands u had mentioned in your previous reply.
fastboot flashing get_unlock_ability
...
(bootloader) unlock_ability = 16777216
OKAY [ 0.012s]
finished. total time: 0.012s
fastboot oem lks
...
(bootloader) lks = 1
OKAY [ 0.004s]
finished. total time: 0.008s

v2.0.3 boot came from a supposed "N" rom for this device and was the first boot image I was able to make bootable. It was still API 23 "M" by the way.
I would have to find and unpack the original file to see what I edited to make it bootable.
All others are "dd" copies from my own device(s).

Scatter file for Mediatek MT8163, opening the tablet
Can you post the scatter file for the Mediatek MT8163?
I've been trying to make my own image dumps for the Nook 7, but have run into an issue where the device won't stay in a readable mode for SP Flash Tools long enough while the battery is still connected. So, the solution for most phones is to disconnect the battery and have it powered over USB only so that it won't go past the preloader and into the charging mode.
But I can't get the darned thing open! My phone has a similar style housing and I had to use a suction cup on the glass while prying at the edges to gain access. But for the Nook 7 its just not working.
Edit: This started while trying to soft load TWRP to make the image dumps. When I do
Code:
fastboot boot twrp.img
It tells me that the kernel address lies outside of memory. Its possible to supply an address to load it at with the fastboot command which you are supposed to learn from the scatter file. I found what I thought was a valid MT8163 scatter file but using the address found within did not fix the issue.
I forgot you mentioned that you didn't pull the original image from your device yourself. I've been trying to root this without relying on images from others. Your latest guide to pulling and modifying your own boot.img is a decent enough middle ground for me to use. Thanks.

So, I was dumb and went through with updating Magisk without checking this thread first, and now my tablet's stuck in a bootloop that I can't seem to get out of. @ipdev, do you have any ideas on how this happened/how to get out of it? The tablet can't get past the "Orange state your device has been unlocked etc. etc." screen, and I can't get it to boot into recovery either (using Power+Volume Down, is the combination something else on this tablet?). fastboot won't discover it either, probably because it reboots within seconds and never gets to a point where it could be recognized. I'm thinking of letting it bleed out until its battery dies (unfortunately, the battery is soldered and glued in, so I can't just disconnect it), and checking on it in the morning to see if it will be cooperative enough to let me flash the modified Magisk image.
@saagarjha
I have a few in the same condition. As you noticed, the battery is soldered in so the best you can do is disconnect the screen. (Connector to the right of battery.)
One of these days, I was going to try sp flashtools to see if I could recover one of mine. (I'm not sure if it works with these.)
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Labs
I let the tablet run out of battery and then plugged it back in again and it immediately got stuck in the same bootloop, so it looks like it's actually bricked rather than just pretending. I think SP Flash Tools is the way to go at this point; we'd have to find a functioning preloader driver and scatter file to do that, however. It might be possible to simulate disconnecting the battery by shorting the battery's leads, but I'm not sure if this would work (or is even safe to do).
I was having trouble with unlocking the boot loader on my v1 launch version of this Nook. Recently I dropped it and got a new one via the replacement plan - this one was marked 'v2', came with a 2.x firmware that I wasn't able to even get on my launch Nook 7.
Anyway, this one unlocked without any problems. Thought this might be helpful to anybody having trouble unlocking the bootloader. Consider the revision of the Nook you have. Maybe the solution here is flashing the v2 firmwares to the v1? Hard to say.
unable to unlock
So I did "adb reboot bootloader" and the tablet rebooted and says "=> FASTBOOT mode..." on the screen.
I then did "fastboot flashing unlock" on the computer. Nothing happened on the device and my computer says "< waiting for device >". Could anyone please let me know what I did wrong? Thank you very much.

[GUIDE] STEP-BY-STEP Instructions to Install Monthly OTA updates on Rooted Essential

[GUIDE] NOOB-Friendly STEP-BY-STEP Instructions to Install Monthly OTA updates on Rooted Essential PH-1
Introduction: I know there are many threads already posted that answer how to install OTA on rooted devices but unfortunately they get lost in massive threads that are often not NOOB friendly. I do not claim to be an expert but I have spent a long time reading threads and found the method I will detail below the easiest for me to follow on a monthly basis. I will do my best to give credit where credit is due to the original authors but my apologies in advance if I miss anything.
Just to start the prerequisites I have are a Windows 10 PC, Essential PH-1, with Stock OS and stock unlocked Bootloader. I have tried using TWRP in the past but I found this method simpler. I don't know whether my instructions will work for you or not if you already have TWRP installed but I can let one of the experts respond and I will be happy to update the guide based on feedback.
Part 1 - Downloads
Start by downloading the following items and storing them locally on your PC if you don't have them already
Download the latest OTA Monthly build from here: https://www.essential.com/developer/current-builds Note: Just check off that you are looking for "Current Builds" and click "Submit Form" and then click "Download (OTA)" link beneath the newest release you want.
Download the newest stock boot image here from bmg1001's google drive Credit:bmg1001
(FIRST TIME ONLY) Download and install the Windows driver (if you don't already have on your computer) from here: https://storage.googleapis.com/essential-static/Essential-PH1-WindowsDrivers.exe
(FIRST TIME ONLY) Download ADB tool (if you don't have already on your computer) from here: https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools.html This link is directly from Essentials site here in their "Before Sideloading" section it is the link entitled "You'll need the latest ADB tool"
To continue you must have developer options USB Debugging enabled which I presume was already done previously if your phone is rooted but if not you must do so before proceeding.
To Enable Developer Options: Settings App> System> About Phone> Scroll Down to Bottom and tap 7 times on the "Build Number"
To Enable USB Debugging: Settings App> Developer Options> USB Debugging (Set to Enabled)
Part 2 - Sideload the OTA Update
DISCLAIMER: This method if done properly should not wipe any of your data, however I take no responsibility and it is always advisable to back up your data before proceeding with any updates if you wish. I will be honest that I have now done this several times and never had any issues.
Unzip the ADB tool (link above in downloads section is for "platform-tools") and save it to a folder easily accesible on your computer (for this demonstration I will use "C:\platform-tools")
Copy the OTA update file to your ADB folder i.e. "C:\platform-tools" and rename it "OTAupdate.zip" (it is not necessary to rename it, just makes this simpler for the guide)
Verify the checksum of the image. I use hashtab which allows you to right click on any file and click properties and see the hashes as a tab in the properties menu. The SHA-256 is listed right under the OTA download link just copy and paste it in to the hashtab to verify
Remove your PIN / Password before sideloading by going to Settings> Security & Location> Screen Lock> Set it to None (this probably isn't necessary I just do it as a precaution)
Plug Essential Phone into computer and make sure that it says USB Debugging Enabled
Open the folder "C:\platform-tools" in Windows File Explorer and hold shift and right click in the window and you select the option "Open Powershell window here" from the context menu (works in Windows 10 can't speak for earlier Windows versions). If you don't see it the first time Shift+right click on a different part of the empty white window and you should see it appear.
Verify your device is properly connected by typing
Code:
adb devices
and you should see your device listed
Type
Code:
adb reboot recovery
Note:If you're unable to use ADB to reboot into recovery, you can use the key combination for your device. While device is off to boot into Recovery mode, press and hold Volume-Up button while pushing Power button to boot.
Your device is now in Recovery mode. An Android logo with red exclamation mark should appear on screen. Hold the Power button, then press the Volume-Up button one time. When the menu appears, select Apply update from ADB.
Run the following command:
Code:
adb devices
Then check that your device shows up with “sideload” next to its name
Run the following command:
Code:
adb sideload OTAupdate.zip
where OTAupdate.zip is the name of the file you downloaded and verified
Once the update finishes, select Reboot system now to reboot your phone
At this point you should have a stock updated essential device but without root. The remainder of this guide will use Magisk to restore your device to root.
Part 3 - Re-root your Device with Magisk
Copy newest boot image from here that you downloaded earlier to a folder directly on your phone. I personally put it in my "Download" folder on my phone so I can find it easily
Open Magisk Manager and click Install>Install>Patch Boot Image
Select the boot image from step 1 and then let Magisk proceed in creating a patched image file
Copy the file "magisk_patched.img" file that Magisk just created from your device back to the computer and put it in the ADB folder "C:\platform-tools"
Plug in phone and open powershell same as before (shift+ right click> Open Powershell window here)
Type
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
to reboot your phone into fastboot
Confirm your phone is in fastboot by typing
Code:
fastboot devices
Then check that your device shows up with “fastboot” next to its name
Execute the command
Code:
fastboot flash boot magisk_patched.img
Restart your phone and you are done! Don't forget to put your phone PIN/Password back if you disabled security in the earlier step.
You should now have a successfully updated phone with full ROOT access with Magisk. I know that this guide seems like a lot of steps but it really goes very quickly, I just tried to be detailed and NOOB-Friendly.
Hope this helps all of my fellow XDA members!! Please share any and all feedback. Thanks!

The way I do *updates* is different (not the initial TWRP/ root).
I use the same Essential developer link as in part 1-1. I also have a copy of twrp-installer-mata-3.2.3-0 zip file on my device.
Boot to TWRP, and do a complete nandroid.
Then install the OTA file just like it's any other zip and when it's done, install the twrp-installer-mata-3.2.3-0 zip file. You can simply put them both into the flash queue before starting the flash.
This TWRP installer will install to both slots ensuring that the inactive slot has it installed. Wipe dalvik and then reboot to system which will be in the opposite slot from the one you started at.
The OTA will always flash to the inactive slot and the bootloader will switch to the slot the OTA was flashed to.
The initial boot takes a few minutes. Once I verify the ROM boots correctly, then I reboot to TWRP and flash Magisk. This ensures that Magisk get installed to the same slot that is now active.
I agree it's safer to remove screen pin, so far I have gotten away with never remembering to do that [emoji16]
If the flash fails, the bootloader should just switch you back to the original slot. I would expect that to boot fine, with one exception... The bootloader was changed between 8.1.1 and 9.0. So if you are going between major versions, the original slot will bootloop after the update.
One more note, a pet peeve of mine; when referencing a post that is older, make sure that you review the forums for changes. TWRP might have a required newer release, the methods that once worked may no longer work. If you are not sure or comfortable recovering, then don't be an early adopter. [emoji6]

you know i just finished writing my own guide to do it after i had trouble with the sticky posts. for me, magisk couldnt find the stock boot so i had to pretty much redo it. i did most things with back-to-stock and fastboot. but now i really wanna try your method through twrp. i been using the patched_twrp_magisk_stock.img images which have twrp and magisk in the same image. using your method, in twrp, could i flash the ota, the patched_twrp_magisk_stock.img, switch slots in twrp, flash patched_twrp_magisk_stock.img again, then switch back to the original slot and reboot system? thanks!

@andypiznti
There's no need to manually switch slots. And no reason to flash the TWRP *installer* file twice. The first time it runs, it patches both slots.
IMHO, trying to control slots is what gets people into trouble.
I do pay attention to what slot I'm on before I start though. In TWRP, if you go to the reboot menu, it will tell you. But the way I flash, I stay on the slot I started with. The OTA will always flash to the opposite slot - which should be the inactive slot. Flashing the TWRP *installer* file just once, patches both slots.
Just wipe dalvik (and cache but there is no cache partition so it will error - just ignore the error) then reboot to system like we've done after custom ROMs for years.
The next boot, the bootloader knows to switch to the slot with the newest OS.
After a successful boot, when you return to TWRP, you'll see the slot is the opposite one from when you started. But you didn't need to do any slot switching.
Don't force things. Let the slots take care of themselves.
I also think, there is less likely to be trouble with Magisk and the boot.img, if you boot fully after an update, before returning to recovery to flash Magisk. Remember that both TWRP and Magisk are making changes to the boot.img.
Final thought, unless I seriously misunderstand Magisk, if you rooted using an all-in-one boot.img you won't have a back up of the "stock" boot.img to restore, making the Magisk uninstaller useless. The backup made when installing Magisk is stored on the data partition, not the boot partition. This is why the instructions in BTS tell you to flash the stock boot.img and provide a copy of it.

The beauty of my method in the OP is you don't need to worry at all about the correct "slots" like you have to with TWRP...

ok that answers a lot. thanks! the guide i made for myself had me flashing the stock image with bts. i was curious about the full boot after an update, i was thinking the same thing in that it might cause problems with magisk, but i also thought twrp would cause problems too. the reason i mentioned switching slots and flashing is the all-in-one img only flashes to one slot at a time, i believe.
heres my guide for reference, its kinda long. but these were the exact steps i followed and was successful. had to flash the img twice, kept rebooting into recovery if i didnt.
Applying OTA for Essential Phone when Magisk doesn't have stock boot
Boot to recovery with Magisk
Back up at least system and boot
Boot to bootloader with TWRP
Extract back to stock (BTS) for CURRENT INSTALLED VERSION, not the update BTS version
Once in bootloader, connect phone->old phone plug, SSD plug
Run flashallnowipe.bat, once bootloader reboots, select Start, unplug phone
Uninstall Magisk like a regular app
Do OTA->settings->advanced->system update
after reboot->reboot while holding volume down until in download/fastboot mode
***REMEMBER!! Flash on the opposite slot of the current slot
***so if im on slot a, flash slot b.
make sure to extract Essential_ADB_and_FASTBOOT.zip in BTS folder then->cmd-here.exe
fastboot getvar current-slot
***
fastboot flash boot_a dec_patched_twrp_magisk_stock.img
fastboot flash boot_b dec_patched_twrp_magisk_stock.img
***Switch to other slot
fastboot --set-active=a
fastboot --set-active=b
***Just to double check, REMEMBER!! Flash on the opposite slot of the current slot
fastboot getvar current-slot
***
fastboot flash boot_a dec_patched_twrp_magisk_stock.img
fastboot flash boot_b dec_patched_twrp_magisk_stock.img
***Switch back to orig slot
fastboot --set-active=a
fastboot --set-active=b
On the phone fastboot menu, select Start, unplug phone
Manager asks if you wanna install it, no, it downloads the wrong one, maybe works now?
Install Magisk Manager->https://github.com/ianmacd/MagiskBuilds
IT HAS TO BE THIS APK, Download any apk version from above github, install
when you open Manager, then download the newest apk, dont update image
Manager and Image update daily, ignore till next month OTA

I don't know what more I could do to make the point it's not necessary to worry about slots in TWRP.
@andypiznti. The all-in-one is Fastboot flashed to either slot one at a time. All of this makes life harder than it needs to be.
My post was suggesting an alternative. Use the OTA, no Fastboot, no PC just have the TWRP installer file I linked so you don't lose TWRP.

OP, if you want to avoid having to sideload the whole OTA, you can have it done directly by your phone by flashing the stock boot image for the current version that you are one and then updating from the settings (or notification). Then just continue with flashing the rooted boot image for the new update. I feel like that is safer than both TWRP and sideloading the full OTA (in reference to keeping data safe).

The Complete Pixel 3 How-To Guide (newbie friendly!)

There's a ton of information out there, but finding it can sometimes be a challenge, especially for a newbie. And then there's posts to read through, in case a process has changed and it's only talked about in a single place, buried any number of pages back. So this is my attempt to put all Pixel 3 how-to's into a single thread. Everything below is what worked for me, from start to finish, with a fresh phone directly from Google that was bootloader-locked, unrooted, and running stock Android. Comments are welcome and encouraged: if something doesn't work for you, or you have a better/quicker/more reliable way of doing something, or maybe I made a mistake...let me know!
A few things:
Everything in this guide was tested on a "regular" Pixel 3 (blueline). It should all work exactly the same on a Pixel 3 XL (crosshatch), as long as you download the appropriate files (specifically the factory/OTA images and TWRP). I'm posting this in both blueline and crosshatch forums.
This first post will have links to files and the tools you need, as well as general things (like how to enable debugging and boot into recovery). The second post has how-to's for the big stuff (flashing images, TWRP, unlocking, etc).
I'm not responsible for anything you do. Follow these guides at your own risk. Doing so may also void your warranty.

ADB and Fastboot
Google USB drivers: https://developer.android.com/studio/run/win-usb
SDK platform tools: https://developer.android.com/studio/releases/platform-tools
Download the ZIP and open (no need to extract the whole thing)
Copy the files below to their own directory (you will use this directory for all ADB/Fastboot commands):
adb.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
AdbWinUsbApi.dll
fastboot.exe
General
Enable USB debugging
Download Google USB drivers (see above)
Download SDK platform tools and copy required files to their own directory (see above)
Enable USB debugging (Settings > About > tap Build 7 times > back > Developer options)
Plug phone into computer and when "Allow USB debugging" box comes up, check the box and allow (may need to have adb daemon running on the computer already, see below)
Fastboot mode (using hardware keys) aka bootloader
Power off
Hold VOL- and press/hold PWR until bootloader (fastboot) comes up
Recovery mode (using hardware keys)
Get into Fastboot mode (see above)
Use VOL buttons to find Recovery in the list, use PWR to select (should boot to broken android image)
Hold PWR and press VOL+ once to get into recovery
Useful ADB and Fastboot commands
Enable USB debugging (see above)
ADB (used while phone is "on" and booted up):
Use "adb devices" to ensure the computer is authorized
Use "adb reboot bootloader" to get into Fastboot
Fastboot mode
Use "fastboot devices" to verify computer can see your phone
Update #1: Items below marked through were removed since they don't really apply to Android 10.
Update #2: Edited to reflect changes in root with Android 11.
A quick note: everything below is assuming you're using Windows 10. When it says "Type...", this assumes you've opened a command window in the location of adb/fastboot and that all files referenced are in the same directory and (in some cases) renamed as I reference them (short names without spaces simplifies things). If you're using Powershell, you will probably need to change "adb" and "fastboot" to read ".\adb" and ".\fastboot" so Powershell will use the local files.
Unlocking the bootloader
THIS WILL WIPE YOUR PHONE, SO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS BACKED UP!
In Developer Options, enable OEM unlocking and confirm (it may ask you to input fingerprint or PIN/pattern/password)
Boot into Fastboot mode (see above)
Type to unlock:
Code:
fastboot flashing unlock
Use VOL+ key to get the options on the screen to read "Unlock the bootloader" and use PWR button to select
Type to reboot:
Code:
fastboot reboot
Locking the bootloader
THIS WILL WIPE YOUR PHONE, SO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS BACKED UP!
Boot into Fastboot mode (see above)
IMPORTANT: restore stock recovery if you replaced it with TWRP (this should prevent the "Can't find valid operating system" issue)
Type to lock:
Code:
fastboot flashing lock
Use VOL buttons to find "Lock the bootloader" and use PWR to select
Type to reboot:
Code:
fastboot reboot
Factory reset via fastboot (can also do this without wiping data)
THIS COULD WIPE YOUR PHONE, SO MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS BACKED UP!
Download factory image ZIP and unzip all files into their own folder
Unlock bootloader (see above)
Reboot into Fastboot mode
You have 2 options:
Register the location of fastboot.exe with the PATH system variable and run "flash-all.bat"
Wipe data: just run "flash-all.bat" and call it a day
Do not wipe data: open "flash-all.bat" in a text editor (careful not to double-click and run it!), remove the "-w" from the last line to disable the wiping of data, then save, close, and run
Move the 3 files (bootloader IMG, radio IMG, image ZIP) into the ADB folder, rename for simplicity if you want, launch cmd or Powershell, and run the commands below (which come from "flash-all.bat")
Wipe data: type out commands below, but at last line, add "-w" flag: fastboot -w update image.zip
Do not wipe data: type out commands below as written (no "-w" flag)
The commands:
Code:
fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-blueline-XXXX.img
fastboot reboot bootloader
[wait for reboot]
fastboot flash radio radio-blueline-XXXX.img
fastboot reboot bootloader
[wait for reboot]
fastboot update image-blueline-XXXX.zip
Note: The last command (update image) will launch the red "fastbootd" screen, so don't worry and be patient while the command line tells you what's happening. The phone will reboot on its own into the Android system (not fastboot) afterward.
Root Android 10+ using Magisk (Canary channel)
This must be done after every update, and you cannot use the patched file from a different phone!
Unlock bootloader (see above)
Download factory image (not OTA, see link above)
Download and install Magisk Manager Canary (see link above)
In Magisk Manager settings, set Update Channel to "Canary"
Extract boot.img from image-blueline-XXXX.zip found in the factory image you downloaded
Place boot.img on your phone's internal storage
Open Magisk Manager and do:
tap "Install" button (next to "Magisk" in first block on the main screen)
"Select and Patch a File" option
Find boot.img file you just placed on your phone
tap "Let's Go"
When finished, move the newly-created magisk_patched.img file over to your computer's ADB directory
Reboot into bootloader
Type:
Code:
fastboot flash boot magisk_patched.img
fastboot reboot
Open up Magisk Manager and make sure everything's good!
Note : if you get stuck in fastboot mode or in a boot loop, flash the stock boot.img to both slots and try again
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img --slot all
Optional:
for adblocking, tap "Systemless hosts" in Magisk Manager, then install AdAway using F-Droid
install a performance kernel like Kirisakura for Bluecross (R)
Updating Android 10+ while rooted
You can't take an OTA while rooted, so updating Android 10+ (as in monthly updates) can be one of two ways.
Method #1 (faster, but more chance for issues)
Download OTA ZIP and move it to ADB folder (don't unzip it)
This does not require an unlocked bootloader, but does require USB debugging (see above)
Get boot.img from the factory image (see first post on where to download this) and place your ADB directory
Reboot into bootloader / fastboot and type to restore stock boot to both slots:
Code:
fastboot flash boot --slot all boot.img
fastboot reboot bootloader
[wait for reboot]
Use VOL buttons to select "Apply update from ADB"
Type (where filename is the name of the file you want to sideload):
Code:
adb sideload filename.zip
Wait for it to finish, will take you back to Recovery when it's done
Reboot using menu
Method #2 (takes longer, but best bet for minimal issues)
Follow "Factory reset via fastboot" instructions (see above, make sure you don't wipe your data!)
Take the OTA in the official way (through Android)
Follow "Root Android 10+ using Magisk Canary" instructions (see above)
Boot into TWRP (3.3.0-0 or higher)
Download TWRP IMG and place in ADB folder (rename the file to twrp.img)
If not already done, unlock the bootloader (see above)
Reboot into bootloader
Type to boot TWRP (it will restart and should boot into TWRP):
Code:
fastboot boot twrp.img
OPTIONAL: Replace recovery by installing TWRP
Your phone should automatically mount, so move twrp.img from PC to Download folder on phone's internal storage
Advanced > Install Recovery Ramdisk > choose TWRP IMG > Swipe to install
Back > Fix Recovery Bootloop > Reboot System > Do Not Install when asked if TWRP should install app
Root using Magisk (18.1 or higher)
Download Magisk ZIP and move to device
Boot into TWRP (see above)
Enter your PIN/pattern/password to decrypt (unnecessary if you are not using security on your phone)
Swipe to Allow Modifications (to system)
Install > find and select the Magisk ZIP > Slide to install
Wipe cache > Reboot system > Do Not Install when asked if TWRP should install app
Open Magisk Manager to verify latest and to install modules
"Can't find valid operating system" booting issue
Unlock your bootloader again (see above)
Follow steps for "Factory reset via fastboot" (see above) and keep the wipe flag
After it reboots, power off (press PWR and select "Power off" from menu)
Follow steps for "Locking the bootloader" (see above)
After it reboots into Fastboot mode, have it start using the PWR button
Android Recovery / "Cannot load Android system" booting issue
This can happen for a number of reasons, but the fix is the same: "Factory reset via fastboot" (see above). You probably do not need to wipe user data, so you can omit the "-w" flag.
If you still get the error message, select the "Try again" option. If it still doesn't work, try "Factory reset via fastboot" again, as well as "Try again". If it doesn't work this time, you probably have no choice but to do a factory reset (in which you will definitely lose your data).
If it happens after flashing Magisk in TWRP, though, you've got a slightly different issue and the problem will persist no matter how many times you flash the factory images and re-install Magisk. This is probably due to something leftover in the previous Magisk installation that conflicts with the new installation. There are two ways to handle this.
First and easiest: uninstall Magisk Manager app before rebooting into the bootloader and running fastboot commands. Then proceed as usual (sideload OTA or flash factory images via fastboot, boot TWRP, and flash Magisk). All guides for this are above. This method preserves any modules you have installed.
Second and more complete (if the above method still gives you trouble):
download to your phone the Magisk ZIP, Magisk Uninstaller ZIP, and Magisk APK from this XDA thread
uninstall the Magisk Manager app
reboot to bootloader
using fastboot, boot into TWRP using IMG (you don't need to replace boot with TWRP)
flash Magisk Uninstaller ZIP
wipe Dalvik
flash Magisk ZIP
wipe Dalvik
reboot system (do not install TWRP)
install Magisk Manager APK and re-install any modules
I just have a couple questions pls-
1) Do the above instructions work on the Verizon Pixel 3 XL
2) I'm currently runned the official Android Q Beta (April 5). Do I need to leave the beta, then restore back to stock Android P (and do I do all those updates before starting root instructions)?
Should I be concerned if my phone hasn't informed me of an April update?
I don't remember if I unlocked the bootloader before or after the updates to the March security update. Does it matter?

No it does NOT matter which build you unlocked your BL
*edit*
Try to go into settings and force the update or you can always flash the entire factory img for april

1.) If you somehow have an unlocked bootloader, yes, it would work for the Verizon Pixel 3 XL. However, I was under the impression that Google will not unlock the BL for the Verizon variant and there is currently no way to "hack" it.
2.) It should work the same whether you're on P or Q, though if you want to remain with Q, make sure you download the beta files directly from Google (rather than the P images) and use Magisk 19.0 instead of 18.1.

You can force it to check for updates; when you unlocked the BL shouldn't matter if you're using a patched boot image.

I haven't done anything to the phone since I got it 3 weeks ago but hoping to. Can the VZ version be unlocked? If so please point me in the right direction.

Thanks so much for the info! Its difficult trying to find the current status of all the diff devices' root statuses.
Thanks for this guide, when using the flash-all.bat and wiping the device will this method flash to both slots?

yes, if you are flashing with wipe all option (without removing -w) it does flash to both slots.
Regarding getting to fastboot:
Since I have flashed April security update and after lightly bricking my Pixel 3Xl, (I have not lost data but I was unable to boot till solving the brick), the phone doesn't stay in fastboot when I use the adb command to get into it and all I can do to get to stay in fastboot is the power and volume down combo for more than 40 seconds.
I have my pixel working perfectly with root and kirisakura kernel but it is a bit of a pain getting to boot TWRP from fastboot for flashing stuff.

yeah if i try to get into fastboot directly from a power on state it doesn't stick on fastboot blinks for a second and then starts with reboot process, probably we are pressing it too long.
what i do normally is to power off the device first wait for few seconds then then use key combination to get it to fastboot from power-off state. Booting from fastboot to twrp never had any issues unless i had messed up the twrp installation due to some mess i did.

Dumb question. Probably gonna upgrade from an original Pixel XL soon. As long as I buy it from store.google.com, I should be able to unlock the bootloader without worrying about a crack/hack, correct? Thanks!

That is correct. I made the same switch from an OG Pixel and Pixel XL to P3 and P3XL right after release. Unlock the bootloader before you mess around a lot since it will do a factory reset.
How about backups? Does anyone backup and restore, or not?
If so, how do you do it with this 2 partition system?
installed and I like it. I cant get the clock off the lock screen. all settings says it is off.
wished it had MicroG installed instead of gapps

Device unauthorized in Recovery mode

I am looking for help as I cannot find anything on the Internet.
Situation:
I have rooted Pixel with December updates. I thought that it is high time to update it to February security updates.
I was trying to use OTA update and according to instruction ( https://developers.google.com/android/ota ) I should reboot to Recovery mode.
I am using Windows 10 x64.
Problem:
In Recovery mode I cannot connect via adb to phone. I am getting:
C:\WINDOWS\system32>adb devices
List of devices attached
0B041JEC216220 unauthorized
What is strange is fact that before I restarted to Recovery I had no problem and I even used adb to reboot to Recovery using below commands:
C:\WINDOWS\system32>adb devices
* daemon not running; starting now at tcp:5037
* daemon started successfully
List of devices attached
0B041JEC216220 device
C:\WINDOWS\system32>adb reboot recovery
Tried solutions:
1. Removing adb keys on PC and Phone not helping.
2. Revoking USB debugging authorizations
3. Disabling / enabling USB debugging
4. Removing LeMobile ADB driver and installing official from https://developer.android.com/studio/run/win-usb
Any ideas what I can do next?
Are your platform tools up to date? You should be on 30.0.5.
Do you have a fastboot connection?
You could always remove the -w with a text editor and flash-all with the factory image

Yes, I have and I thought about it too, but I was afraid about such "dirty" flash. It seems that there is no other way, so I will try it and let know if adb is fixed after flash.
I did flash without -w and for adb in Recovery mode the same situation. At least I have updated ROM and it seems that everything works. Thanks!
I'm having the same issue...

you did what?
man, i miss the times where anyone could update his google phone without being a developer
When you download the stock rom from Google website and unpack the zip file, you will find there script flash-all.
In side that script one of the last commands has -w flag. If you don't want to wipe your user partition you can remove it, save the script and run it to flash the new stock.

did you find a solution for the original problem in the end?
i flashed the complete firmware then as well, just as you did, but i’m still curious as to why my devices (our devices) remain "unauthorized" in stock recovery. tried all of the mentioned solutions as well, no luck, perfectly "authorized" in the os itself, as well as in fastboot mode, just not in recovery ..

after a bit of research (by which i mean google/trial/error) i now feel VERY dumb, but let me share my results with you - for what it’s worth, and maybe it is/was the same problem for you:
apparently to sideload an OTA the device in recovery does NOT have to show "authorized"! (tried everything (creating new keys, checking the local key against the device-key manually, etc) and still it said "unauthorized".)
it turns out i tried to get the authorized-status on the screen where the android robot fell down and said "no command", so kinda "before" the actual recovery mode! get out of that screen (holding power button long, pressing vol-up short, letting go the power button) to get into the "menu" mode of recovery. still unauthorized, yes. then/there choose "sideload via adb" until the device says "waiting for input .." or something, and - TADAA - "adb devices" now tells you "sideload" next to the device id (instead of "unauthorized"). which is not only correct and "as expected", but actually works (for me) for sideloading an OTA!
mind blown, more or less. all the time i tried to get it "authorized" before checking if the actual OTA needs that anyway.
Try adb kill-server
Then adb start-server
fastboot reboot bootloader
Fastboot Devices
She should be authorized

your a life saver. I was totally stuck in recovery for updating ota of pixel 6 pro.
A simple solution is to unplug usb cable from phone.
kill the adb server: adb kill-server
restart the server: adb start-server
boot your phone into recovery mode.
select update using ADB.
once is ask for the package plug your phone back into the usb
type: adb devices.
Its should show your device and state sideload instead of unauthorized...
then type: adb sideload (package name.zip)
Hope this helps...
just hold Vol- during boot, login in safe mode, plug cable, authorize, profit. you can also simply reboot in full root mode afterwards as magisk already sorted out the problem.
-> all modules are disabled for your convenience, no need to delete and reinstall modules, just tick box again to reenable
-> phone is an airplane mode for your convenience, so that you don't leak some info w/privacy plugins temporarily off
I got the similar issue
> adb devices
abcdefgh device
> adb reboot fastboot
> fastboot reboot recovery
> adb devices
abcdefgh unauthorized
Do you know how to fix the device unauthorized in recovery mode?
