Hi everyone, I'm new here.
The XT1039 that I bought last week is my first Android phone with an unlockable bootloader, so I have a few questions before I do anything with it. I am a software developer and I have some experience with Android system hacking on my Asus TF700 tablet, so I do know what adb and fastboot are - my "noob-ness" is highly device specific.
Speaking of fastboot, what exactly is different with mfastboot compared to regular fastboot? Only the support for the "sparsechunk" images? Or does regular fastboot not work at all on Motorola devices?
Is the source code for mfastboot available and where do I find it?
Exploit-based rooting method
For making a backup of current partitions, it would be handy to get root before unlocking the bootloader.
The stock ROM version my phone came with is this:
Code:
ro.build.description=peregrine_reteu-user 4.4.4 KXB21.14-L1.56-1 1 release-keys
Linux version 3.4.42-g09ca493-00001-g5aeebdc ([email protected]) (gcc version 4.7 (GCC) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Sep 27 15:10:40 CDT 2014
so I assume that the towelroot exploit has been already fixed in this version.
I searched for alternatives but found nothing - did I miss it or is there just no working root exploit?
Stock ROM images
I've seen the stock ROM thread, but I've not seen an official download source for them.
Are these leaks from official Motorola servers? How can I verify the authenticity of the stock ROM downloads,
or where can I find official downloads?
Unlocking and upgrading
My goal is to either use
a cleaned up 5.1 stock ROM or
CM 12.1 or
OmniROM.
My plan for the next steps is:
unlock the bootloader
install this stock ROM: XT1039_PEREGRINE_RETEU_5.1_LPB23.13-17_cid7_CFC.xml.zip to get the current (.1A) bootloader and a matching stock kernel and system
build a current TWRP (based on device tree by @Somcom3X) and install it
Make backups of device-specific partitions
Install SuperSU
- Is any of this a bad idea, and why?
- Would there be any reason to keep the old bootloader? (I've read that there are at least 2 partially incompatible bootloader versions and that there is no way to downgrade.)
- Does the bootloader incompatibility only produce screen flicker or are there more severe issues?
Kernel source
I have neither received kernel source with my phone nor a written offer from Motorola. However I found
https://github.com/MotorolaMobilityLLC/kernel-msm
which even contains full commit history (nice!) and a lot of confusing tags, none of which match exactly the ROM build number?
Is there anything unusual (as in, different from other Android devices) that I need to do for compiling the kernel and boot image?
How to brick it
It's always good to know what *not* to do. From what I've read in the forums, I should never do:
run "fastbooot eerase all"
erase partitions that contain device-specific info (hob, dhob)
flash a ROM with the wrong cid
flash a bootloader not designed for my device or otherwise mess with the bootloader
accept OTA updates without having a consistent stock setup
Anything else that I should be aware of?
Pinging a few RCs who claim to support this device - @DC07 @matmutant - please help me get started with this new device.

To what i've read you are right on the overall (i don't know peregrine specific things, since i only own XT1032 8 and 16GB variants)
i never tried mfasboot, and instead used fastboot bundled with the Android SDK with no issues (bootloader flashed nicely and so)
Root
The only kown way to root is having an unlocked bootloader here
Stock ROM
ask @lost101
How to brick it
i don't see any other way at the moment, maybe others will ?
If you see anything that is unclear in the FAQs tell me, things that look ok for people using the device for a while might not be understandable by newcomers
PS: don't forget to "backup" your IMEI to prevent issues too

I have done all off that....
No luck at all.
It's quite strange the lack of parts for this phone. I'm guessing that "Sharp" only gave the brand...but the hardware is from someone else.
I've already found out that the phone has the following names:
-Sharp A1
-Sharp Z2
-Sharp Aquos Z2
or even
FS8002.
Neverthless....i don't find lcd/digitizer/screen for it.
Thanks!

Sharp in Portugal, kindly answered...."Sorry, we can't help, because we don't sell Sharp smartphones...only printers, and copiers...bla bla bla".

Unbrick my phone?
OMG !
I own a sharp (fs8002) and playing around with it i was trying to root it, unlock the BL and install twrp so i can finally install a custom rom.
With not much info about this low supported phone, i used SP FlashTool and managed to erase everything from it. It is not responsive at all, i don`t see fastboot anymore , no revocery no nothing. SP Flashtool identify the device once plugged as mediatek usb port (com9) but i can not find anywhere the necessary files to UNBRICK it so to make it usable once again!
Is there someone who can help me revive and use this two months old phone ?

The stock rom at the Taiwan website (see my earlier post!) is an update-package. It contains a scatter-file that is not suitable for the flashtool...maybe someone can help with that. My guess is that it just does not have the proper format for flashtool. So someone should check that. The firmware seems to be complete, it's 2.1 Gigabyte. I applied the package via update from SD, it works:
Kernel-Version: 3.18.22+ Mon Sep 5 22:19:47 CST 2016
Build Number: NEXCNFN5801509051S release-keys

I managed to download the update firmware file from taiwan website (TSP-1360-0-00WW-A03-update.zip) witch is a 1.92 gb file , but as you said the scatter file contained there is not recognized by SP Flash tool.
Is there a way to make a scatter file for fs8002 with a MT6797 chipset so i can proceed with the flashing ?

I am desperate.. Is there someone on this forum with this smartphone that can create a backup or has access and knowledge to Flash it with SPFlashtool ?
I managed to unlock bootloader, flashed a wrong recovery image and accidentally formatted bootloader and everything. The phone is not responding and i am unable to find anywhere the stock rom to flash it via SP Flash tool
I dont know what else to do..

Hello all,
I got a ZTE Grand X view 2 (K81) tablet from virgin Mobile in Toronto, Canada and I have the sim locked to my imei number. I would like to root this tablet so I can remove unnecessary applications. It is slow as it has <1gb and the internal memory is 8gb. So far the one click root apps I have tried (kingroot, iroot) don't work. What are other options I have for this device?
It is running Android 7.1.1 with the June 1, 2017 security patches
Thanks Karl

One-click root apps won't work. You either go the Magisk patched boot way or Custom recovery + Magisk / SuperSU zip.

I don't have that yet, I will need to search for that. My SD card is currently set as an internal, not portable, is that a problem? Not yet, I switched my SD card back to portable and tried to look around the system using adb shell without any luck. The system is locked down tight and I don't have permission to view most directories. I also contacted ZTE for the recovery img, they thought I was talking about backing up photos
I have same tablet from virgin mobile Canada. I have solid explorer, and it allows me to have root file access out of the box. I deleted bloat apks, was gtg. Not sure if it's normal behavior. I was shocked to see root file system out of the box. P.S any developers that a full system dump would help, I can probably do. After more poking around, I don't have full root access, but I do have read/write to system folder with build.prop etc

I just downloaded and installed solid explorer and the classic versions. Not luck viewing the / file system. If you can get the boot file and post a link to it that would be helpful for the magisk rooting method.
-I was able to use a google account manager app and downloaded/installed qucik_shortcut_2.4.0 this allows you access the launcher and partially use this device... I was able to set the username of the device but to no avail i am unable to use that combo to strip out the previous user's information. there's a method online to show you how to use the talkback settings to get to this point and i used my knowledge of frp bypassing samsung devices to get a little further. the developer options setting is still locked because it doesn't recognize me as the primary user. Its very frustrating. I'm able to sign into chrome with my credentials and access gmail through the browser but as far as getting my account onto this device its been days of trying and my girlfriend is just disgusted with my persistence. I don't know if or when an oreo update will be made available that this will help solve the problem, but i can't believe zte doesn't have the stock firmware anywhere online.
any of you fellow nerds out there that can help please do... I use an S3 for my daily use because well, they're so amazing to customize but the battery is crap because its so old. One thing i have found is with this zte you can at least play the "catch the cat" easter egg game, which is a complete waste of time but fun at the same time.
I'm not sure if this will help but i might as well. I'm also stuck with a zteK81 i'd REALLY love to root. I never had to go really deep into android stuff so tbh ... i've read alot ... but beside knowing i can't root it yet after a couple diff. method... im a bit confuse in all that. Up here i read ppls about looking for the Firmwire and someone else searching for the root. I have pull some pretty deep layer files in mine that may .. may not help you guys. I can't read that correctly. Here's 3 images and i have a little 7z with the actual files and 3-4 more if someone request it. Thanks.

Sadly, no.
Difficulties
To date I have found no way to even perform the OEM Unlock on this device and none of the available rooting schemas are of any use.
If I cannot determine how the sing the modified update.zip file, I am out of ideas.
I have a copy of the ZTE stock rom for the K81 and, if there is a more experienced person willing to take a shot at this, I will happily make the rom available to them.

Hello, so it is common that ZTE's don't have any form of fastboot. So your only way is to flash via QPST with a firehose. But today is your lucky day. I was able to extract the k81's firehose from the Rogers ZTE firmware flashing tool. I have also downloaded the full QPST firmware fire and included the firehose with it. As well as a separate download in case someone already has it. I will also be ordering the device shortly. If you have newer firmware, or one designed for a variant other the rogers would be great if you can share it.

If your device is rooted or if you have TWRP installed, you can't apply the update via OTA
If you want to update via OTA, you will have to unroot your device and undo any changes that you made to the system partition and you will have to replace TWRP with a copy of your stock recovery. Then you can apply the update. You will have to root and install TWRP again after the update is applied.
Or, you can manually download the update from the internet and then use a PC to manually flash via your device's compatible flashtool or via fastboot(whichever is intended to flash firmware on your device).

Good Morning Everyone,
@Droidriven, thanks for your kind response, but I did what you suggest, re-install Nougat Rom from Htc official link deliberately did not root it at first, click on the OTA & yet, got same complain.
I even tried 2.41.401.41--3.16.401.2_S-On_firmware.zip with it but doesn't still work.
But from my research, this is what I found out that works..
* The Phone (HTC 10) is Hong Kong Unlocked Version with build number 2.41.401.4, [email protected] as its base band.
the ROM that will work must share same details with the one provided above.
Anyone that has Oreo 8.0 (2.41.401.4) Update in RUU file format, should Please kindly share its download link with me, I regret the inconveniences, thanks in advance.

Hey guys all good?
I got my hands on an A53 already on Android 13 (U.I 5.1), then I unlocked the bootloader, rooted, magisk working but then I decided to downgrade from 13 to 12 because of a few things
I tried via Odin (13.14.4 and 13.12.7) and both didn't work the first odin it fails the flashing and the second pass but it didn't flash the whole thing just reset the phone
any idea? or I'm now stuck with Android 13?
Cheers
From what I can find, Odin supposedly won't allow a downgrade if the boot loader version is lower.
That's just what people seem to say about Samsung devices and downgrading. I've never tried it and never will. Would immediately use multiple OS versions however if Android actually supported dual booting. Its fantastically messed up that it doesn't.
Not sure if TWRP will. Didn't look that one up. You didn't bring that one up but it might be a way to do it.

Thanks for the reply. I was thinking something about that too. Not that the bootloader is lower but that it was modified (root) i guess
Unfortunately TWRP is not compatible yet with Android 13 UI 5.1 at least accordingly to this topic
So i guess I'm stuck for now

You could flash a GSI image, but I guess that wouldn't be OneUI anymore
Hello you all hope you're having a good day, so no way to downgrade a53 5g from Android 13 to android 12 ??? I found some firmwares for Android 12 but the binary number is 4 and Android 13 is actually on binary number 5 , no way to do the downgrade with Odin?
I read somewhere that is not possible to flash a firmware with different binary number is it true ?? I would like to comeback to android 12 it's better
