No one have tried the new ROM Copperhead OS ?
Can i try to install it as secondary rom in MultiRom ?
I'm on Cyanogen CAF 12.1 now...

Hi! I've installed it in multirom with a stock 5.0.1 as primary and it works, just tried it for few minutes.
just be sure to have the latest bootolader (HHZ12h) or installation will fail.

Flashing a bootloader

I have a Nexus 5 and I use Multirom with it. My default ROM is Lollipop 5.1.1 and a secondary ROM, which I mostly use, is Marshmallow 6.0 (xTraSmooth). I want to install CopperheadOS, but it says when installing, that I must have HHZ12h bootloader in order to install (as stated in a previous post). My current bootloader is HHZ11k. If I install HHZ12h bootloader by flashing a zip file which includes LMY48B_Radio+Bootloader-HHZ12h will it cause anything that prevents Lollipop or Marshmallow to work properly?

You don't need to downgrade the bootloader, just modify the updater script of the rom ( deleting the string containing the bootloader version or replacing with your current version), then it will install just fine.

Thanks! I haven't tried that yet, but I will. First I thought I can just replace HHZ12h with HHZ11k using text editor, but then I noticed there are guides which suggest that it isn't quite that easy. I might be wrong about that, will see when I have enough time to read up on the subject.

It's easy, just extract the rom, go to Meta-Inf/com/google/android and modify the "updater-script". That's all, rebuild the zip and flash in recovery.
Edit: you can do it without using a PC, by using a file manager on your device.

Just installed it on a Nexus 5x and it works flawless. It has most of the standard stuff but is different from the rest in that it is supposed to be security oriented. That means no default root (but rooting should be possible).
I didn't try to add Google stuff yet and probably won't even try to add that spyware but it does have the F-Droid app store.
There are some extra options to secure the memory if required, and the documentation is (so far) very good (for example the install guide and the technical overview).

Currently running it on my Nexus 5x and N5. works great. Anything you are missing you can find on F-Droid. I find the lack of data usage to be delightful; when facebook or ebaum videos auto load on other software, they are stopped on copperhead. very happy with the security.
The only thing i can not make work is voice to text, and I have a ticket in with copperhead. who cares, I have fast thumbs.

Thanks for the feedback. I guess manual apk installation is also possible?

I'm thinking about picking up a Nexus 5 as a backup device, and CopperheadOS seems like something fun to play with, instead of just installing CM13. Can I install TWRP as recovery on devices like the Nexus 5 that don't check for locked bootloaders? Can I run it as basically another ROM –*unlocked developer options, root, TWRP, etc.? I realize the OS exists for enhanced security, but I'd like to make a few tradeoffs.

Unfortunately, you can not run TWRP with copperhead, it wants full control of the phone for security reasons. Its not meant to be a developer OS with access to all the bits, so you kind of need to want a OS in a box that you can deal with.
But I have to say, despite its shortcomings of not having google services, it works pretty much flawless on my 5 and 5x. i miss google maps app, but it works 100% via chromium browser as a favorite, and I have only found 2 apps I can not import via apkmirror, one being Waze, the other is my local public transportation app. other than that, i feel like I'm safe from prying eyes.

Thanks for your response. I'm a fan of CyanogenMod, and I'm not unhappy their security or features, but I wanted to play around with CopperheadOS. I understand the tradeoff between security and convenience, but I'm not willing to sacrifice TWRP in the mix. Oh, well – if I ever have need of an OS solely for its security track record, I know where to go.

It doesn't look to me like Copperhead is supporting the Nexus 5 anymore. Can somebody confirm or is there a link I'm missing somewhere to the ROM?
EDIT: Yep, I knew it was deprecated for a while now but they've even removed the deprecated ROM from the site now. I'd appreciate it if anybody has the last ROM if they could pass it my way.

Switch debugging OFF and don't lock bootloader after CopperheadOS install and u will be able to boot TWRP via
fastboot boot recovery.img [TWRP]
I'm currently experimenting with root privileges on CopperheadOS on Nexus 5X. Still haven’t tried xposed framework.
Security features r quite good, especially different lock code && encryption password and memory protection, but, there is a lack of fine privacy control (Privacy Guard) as in CyanogenMod and firewall, hence the need for root.

I've been using CopperheadOS for a few weeks now on the Nexus5. Received the latests OTA a few days ago and applied without issue.
Installed it via TWRP. Have rooted the device with SuperSU, though have to re-root after re-flashing recovery after each OTA.
It's been working great.
Unfortunately I don't have the img any more

Hi, a couple of days ago ArsTechnica reported a 0-day vulnerability with a fully disclosed PoC for root privilege escalation on MiA1 devices and more... I was wondering if it could be used to create a gcam activator without all the hassles of temporary rooting and rebooting with the volume key and never booting into recovery again unless you want a data wipe. Is there anyone with the required skills to try this out?

I'm not worried about the vulnerability (it will get patched, eventually) - quite the opposite! I think that it could be extremely handy to enable the Camera2 API without having to root with TWRP/tools and risking a device wipe. I can't post the actual exploit proof of concept because I'm a new user here, but the code is reachable from the project zero bug report. Running a process with root privileges would make writing the extra props in the build.properties file way easier. Of course I'm not an Android dev and I could be wrong in many ways... that's why I was asking here.

Latest Android 10 - unsupported/Unknown format from Magisk

New PH-1 owner here. Just got the phone new from Amazon. It was on 7.1.1. Immediately it upgraded to 9.0, and then to 10, build QQ1A-200105.32 with Feb. security updates. Impressive! After reading through some (a lot) of the material collected about the phone, I decided that at first I'd only root it (i.e. without installing TWRP) with Magisk. After getting familiar with the two rooting guide ("[GUIDE] Rooting your Essential PH-1" and "[Guide] How to Install TWRP & Root Essential PH-1(Method 2)") I actually followed this write up, and it :crying:FAILED.
I tried both ('PH1-Images-QQ1A.200105.032.zip', and 'PH1-OTA-QQ1A.200105.032.zip') Essential provided images and with both Magisk (v. 20.3 and MMgr. v. 7.5.1) failed with "Unsupported/Unknown image format"
So, that's the status, and I'll welcome any and all advise on the above, but in the meantime, a question:
1 - If I flash this ('4.4.166-stock-twrp-mgk181.img') image will I loose Android 10,or the ability to have later upgrades?

First, TWRP doesn't work well with latest stock ROM (QQ1A.200105.032), if you'd like to use TWRP, you should use one level down (QQ1A.200105.007)
Second, there's no more upgrade for this ROM, Essential stopped support it, and Feb update was the last one.

Thanks for your reply. For now, all I would love is to get root and not loose the ability to get future updates from Google (I do understand Essential is toast, but with Android 10 Google will provide many updates, right?). So, not much interest in TWRP, just root.
Regarding 4.4.166-stock-twrp-mgk181.img: what Android version does it have, and when installed, can it be upgraded?

Maybe I don't quite clear about your question, but why do you use that TWRP file?
I always use the official one from TWRP

And regarding to Google update, as long as you don't use custom rom + microg then I believe you always get updated from Google Play store for your apps.

Ah, yes! My interest in 4.4.166-stock-twrp-mgk181 image is because, a) I failed to get root with Magisk, and b) this is a `fastboot` image that's already rooted (notice the mgk181 part of the name), BUT because it was made in January of 2019, I think (if it does, and I know too little to know that) it contains older version of Android, hence the question about whether I will be able to update from it.

As I understand it Google will push some updates/security patches for Android via Play store but not everything, you still need updates from your manufacturer (which we now won't get) so you likely won't have all security patches, for this you need an up to date custom ROM like LineageOS (only at ver 9 pie currently) or maybe use the GSI (see Android 11 preview thread) but that is still in development at the moment so probably not suitable for daily use due to bugs & missing features.

I don't use TWRP, but I do have root, so if that's enough for you, see the steps below. Magisk version that you mentioned (v.20.3 and MMgr. v.7.5.1) works perfectly.
Since you are already on Feb update (the latest and the last one from Essential), you don't need the OTA zip. You only need the "PH1-Images-QQ1A.200105.032.zip" - the full fastboot image. Make sure you download and install the ADB/Fastboot from Essential website on your PC - it comes bundled with the Windows driver linked on their Developer page. Also make sure you have a good USB cable (do NOT use the one that comes with the phone!), and avoid using USB3 ports on your PC (use USB2 instead).
1. Extract boot.img from PH1-Images-QQ1A.200105.032.zip.
2. Install Magisk Manager, if not installed already.
3. Copy the extracted boot.img to the phone, then patch it with Magisk.
4. Copy the patched boot.img to PC.
5. Reboot the phone into bootloader.
6. Run the command "fastboot flash boot <your_patched_boot>.img" from your PC.
7. Reboot the phone.
8. Enjoy the root access.

True. Eventually, a proper custom recovery, like TWRP, might be essential (har, har) years down the road (although I only now am coming down from a Moto X (first gen, 2013) that between AFWall and XPrivacy I managed to keep on stock firmware all along), but now I need to get this phone prepped up for daily use, and that means getting root first of all (and from kt-Froggy's note I shall... I see now where I goofed).

Thanks! From the above, it looks like I messed up on the very first step; I was giving Magisk the whole PH1-Images-QQ1A.200105.032.zip file and not the boot.img extracted from it. Oops!

That was my suspicion from how I read your post... ? Yeah, you need just the boot image extracted from the zip. The process is really simple, and it's been working for me with no issues, apart from one specific laptop where I was consistently getting errors for no apparent reason, so I just used other PCs.

How to disable GUI and other unwanted processes?

Hi, after some long, and hard time I've finally managed to root my Xiaomi MI 11 lite 5G NE. The reason why I wanted to root it, is that I want to convert that phone to a simple java server. The problem is, that most of the phone's RAM is being consumed by system apps (out of 6GB, 5.5 is being used). How can I reduce that number and minimize my phone to a command-line-only device?
Additional question: is it possible, to make it all in .sh script? That way I could disable everything whenever I wanted, and if didn't, then I would use a device like a normal android phone

What custom rom would you recommend? Honestly I would prefer to just flash linux to my phone, but i am afraid it's impossible since Ubuntu Touch is available only for some certain devices. Additionally, Mi 11 Lite 5G NE (lisa) doesn't have much community support, and there are only several unofficial roms

HI, any chance I could somehow fully get rid of UI? It doesn't matter, that phone will be just black screen - I setted up SSH on my device, so I can easily access it, I just want to get rid of any not needed processes. When I try to kill that process by id, then it restarts after short time, or entire phone gets restarted

I will perhaps keep my S22U instead of upgrading to s23u , I will then most probably root it as my warranty will soon come to an end and I won't care about knox flag. But is there any AOSP based custom rom for the S22U snapdragon ? If yes can you use Expert Raw app?

The S22 should be capable of running Generic System Images, so if you would like to try running actual AOSP, check out my guide here. Nothing is customized as these are directly from AOSP, but that also means they have zero bloat.

I don't think so - I'm pretty sure features like that are not core Android mechanics, so they wouldn't be included in AOSP. I don't know for sure. Keep in mind that the whole idea behind a GSI - Generic System Image - is that it can run on pretty much any device. Google has been using this model since the Pixel 3 - instead of having different system builds for each device, they use a generic common system image, while device specific features are contained in other partitions such as /product. This way, when they provide the monthly update for Pixels, they don't have to completely rebuild the firmware; they can just use the AOSP GSI for the "core", and any device specific changes are separate in /system_ext and /product. It's a modular design that really helps streamline the update process; it also means that devices that no longer receive updates can still potentially run the latest AOSP core.
I imagine you could extract the product.img from the Pixel 7 factory zip and flash it to /product on your device, but because it's device specific, it most likely wouldn't work properly.
