Speaker crackles at higher volumes - OnePlus 8 Questions & Answers

My speaker sound crackles on high volumes. Anyone else facing this problem?

Have you used any mod/app to increase audio gain? With/without root? Using any custom ROM? Kernel manager?

Volume too high, bass clipping...
blown driver or something is loose.

Hi.
No mod/app to increase audio gain; with root, OS11, no custom ROM or Kernel.

This issue only occurs when the speaker gain is too high. Means there's something odd with your audio system.
Check mixer_paths_*.xml files located in /system/vendor/etc, check if they got any modifications. Speaker gains are usually valued by 84. It can go up to 87 for high volume without crackling.
Anything higher, and it will go crazy .. it'll be just like an old Radio lost signal. Of it was 84, Try to lower it, even 78 is a good value.
If that didn't work, there's probably an app modifying the gain externally, similar to this app.
Try booting into safe mode.

Call volume low, possible to increase?

Is it possible to increase the ear piece volume higher than it already is? It's sometimes hard to hear someone on the other end when in a crowded environment.
Have you tried pressing the volume rocker on the left side of the phone while in the middle of a call?
I've been having a similar problem where everytime I make or receive a phone call the ear piece volume is only at half way, so I always have to manually adjust it when making/receiving calls. Really wish there were a setting in the options menu to have the ear piece volume set to max for all calls.
Ya i tried that, not loud enough in some situations, wish it would be louder.
there is a hack for it, i have came across it but you need to find it. There is one!

Not very helpful.... I too am having this problem. I can barely hear after flashing the optimized kernel.
Also would like it.
Increasing the sound output would make the life of it shorter

Battery life or general device lifespan?

In Manhattan I can't hear anything without boosting the earpiece volume to 98. Too bad it isn't sticky.

the speaker life, it can go out earlier

Mod or something to lower the Volume even lower?

I don't have much time so I'll be quick:
When I hear music or videos without headphones I put the volume on the lowest possible volume (barely above mute).
To be frank, it's still to loud, the S8+ was not as loud as the OP7Pro but it was able to go really silent with audible sound.
Is there a mod or possibly an ADB command to lower the volume from I guess the lowest stage (≈5%) to 1, 2 or 3?
OP7Pro, Android 10, absolutely amazing phone.

I agree, the lowest speaker volume setting is still way too loud.
What I do is use Viper4Android and set all the EQ bands to -10db for the speaker.
It is not a perfect solution because this reduces the maximum volume by 10db, but I personally never need that much volume...

Yeah, need root for V4a. Don't think you'll find any other solution. Tried searching and googling for something to help, couldn't find anything.
Sent from my OnePlus7Pro using XDA Labs
i also have this problem , a solution would be great .
i remember on older phones there were mods to make more steps in the volume adjustment ( allow for a finer adjustment ) . maybe we can port something from there

Extra volume levels?

Hello,
I wonder if there is a way to add extra volume levels (currently 30) on an MTCE stereo?
Thanks in advance
Why?? You're just going overdrive the internal amp and distort the audio.
If you want it louder then use the rca outs and get some larger (external) amps.

The sound is very loud even on 1/30. My unit has a digital amplifier that greatly increases the audio level. Maybe the only way to work around this is to reduce the values in the equalizer.

I think you mean, reduce the volume *range*, so that 1 is very low. If so, head through to factory settings and reduce levels.

Thanks but by doing so, I will also reduce the maximum level so it will be quieter. I wonder if there is a better workaround than this? No "volume step" solution that I found online seems to work

AHH yes, okay I understand now, And yes I have had that problem too.
What I did was install a volume control between the head unit and the amp. When I want to operate quite I turn it down. When I want to operate at full I turn it up.
I couldn't find any 4 channel controls, so I had to make one up for myself, but if you can't to that then you can use two of these:
https://www.amazon.com/PAC-LC-1-Remote-Amplifier-Controller/dp/B0002J226O/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=Universal+Car+Audio+Amplifier+Bass+RCA+Level+Remote+Volume+Control+Knob&qid=1611777694&sr=8-1
You are looking for something that provides you with more incremental volume control "more steps to maximum", instead of 15 steps from off to max, maybe 100 steps from off to max... then you are looking for something like VolumeSteps+

Galaxy Note 3, LineageOS 18.1, Volume Override

Hello,
I'm wondering how I might override the volume on my device in order to make the loudspeaker... louder. My device is rooted and has SmartPack Kernel app on it.
Any help is appreciated.
i am using this app. Hope this answers your question.

Well it did help and it has also made me realize how loud I listen to music with headphones on. My iphone which I use as a music player gets very loud whether it's the loudspeaker or using headphones. With the app you suggested I can tell the Note 3 is getting very old it doesn't handle its volume being overridden well, it sounded distorted and unclear (I had it at 5% boosted).
Oh well, I can live with how it is as-is.
Gave it another shot today.
I rooted the device and then flashed LOLZ kernel and with SmartPark have been able to up the decibels for the headphone jack and for whatever reason SmartPack's method doesn't distort the audio like the Booster app did.

probably because the free up that i suggested that doesn't require root is a piece of sh*t

Perhaps. I fear that my phone is going to be toast soon, the loudspeaker is starting to get that airy failing noise of a speaker sound haha.
I upped the decibel for the loudspeaker by 2% and the headphone jack I think to 3-4%.
BUT even before I did that to the loudspeaker it was giving me that failing sound.

It's just getting old, I guess. Either I'll have to upgrade soon or keep replacing parts.

A great DAC and not being able to use it ...

The Pixel 4a has this DAC, which as you can see is a great DAC, its specs are even better than many HIFI portable audio players. Well, for the uninitiated, android acts as a bottleneck in this case, as it always limits the audio output to 16bit 48khz (using a low quality resampler for the benefit of performance)
Is there any way I can use it decently? Because Google apparently has no intention of doing anything, it hasn't even shared any information on how to use the DAC, and I don't like the idea of having to use an external dac even though the 4a has a headphone jack.
I'd like to know too. Doesn't Viper4Android help get more out of it? I'm getting pretty great sound with that + PowerAmp.

mmm I need to know how you set the audio settings, the output audio is resampled to 48khz? have you set the output in HD?
You mean my settings in PowerAmp or Viper?
Yeah.. It seems that Hi-res potential is not implemented in the stock ROM. Everything is mixed into 48 kHz...

I see. Is there any custom Rom that implements it?
Also, have you tried Ainur Narsil? Perhaps it does what you want. I'm just unsure whether it will work on Android 11, it seems development is paused.

I'm not aware of any custom ROM which supports hi-res. If you know, please tell.
I've tried ainur but without success. And smth was even corrupted because sound became worse.
Mary be community should raise an issue for Google.

I've no idea actually. I'm interested in this stuff, but not so much as to notice worse quality with the 48khz Android output. And yeah, that's why I haven't tried Narsil, it doesn't seem to be too well tested in A11 and we don't even have a proper TWRP in case something goes wrong. Still, I am noticing a difference with my modded Sony NW-A45, but it's not like it sounds better, it sounds different perhaps.
Poweramp is terrible. You need an app that bypasses androids software. Usb audio player pro is the best available. It plays bitperfect audio. Neutron is second, it can also play bitperfect audio. Both apps can output 32bit/364kz at whatever rate the Track allows. Uapp plays MQA as well
