I had the same problem. I updated it by using "lenovo rescue and smart assistant" program.
Connect your device and click rescue. It will download the latest firmware and flash it. Be careful that your device will be resetted!

Oh I forgot. That's WW Version
Need to restart your phone from Fastboot and you need adb on your computer.
Here's the code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
If you unlock the bootloader before the nougat. You can Install Nougat but it will autoshutdown the unit because the Boot.img and Recovery.img is still in Marsmallow OS.

Need something more to do?

Hi everyone!
I have a Zenfone 3 operator branded (TIM).
I am still on Marshmallow with Locked Bootloader.
Can I use these ADB commands to overwrite my actual Stock Recovery and gain the WW Nougat Recovery?
Then I would enter the recovery to install the same WW Nougat ASUS ROM version.
In this way would I obtain to debrand my phone and get Nougat in one shot?
Can this be done with Locked Bootloader?
Thank You!
Links are down, please refresh
It works!
I just want to confirm to those who are wondering that installing the recovery and boot images along with the firmware from the Asus website works fine. Just make sure that you get the firmware that has the same version with the recovery+boot that the OP uploaded which is 14.2015.1701.8.
Phone hasn't shut down or rebooted on its own so there shouldn't be any worries as long as you do all the steps right.
Edit: I did this on a ZE520KL btw.

Thanks for the directions, links, and video. All went well (i kept the moto x4 on 8.1 instead of upgrading to Pie) - the only difference was I had to enter my password to decrypt the drive first, then remover Superuser (to let the magisk built in superuser run).
Just two questions. Do you know:
1. if I should turn off the "oem unlocking" for the bootloader after everything is installed?
2. if I should turn off usb debugging after everything is installed?

once you unlock bootloader that option should be greyed out.
no point in disabling it
usb debugging is your wish. thats for taking logs.

My "OEM unlocking" slider is still active - I can slide it off and back on, although I don't know if that actually does anything.
Links above say to use TWRP 3.2.1.1, but YouTube guide uses 3.2.3.1. Does it make a difference which we use?

Yes. This is standard when unlocking bootloader (I guess a security thing). You will want to backup.

Thanks, Chandler... could you recommend a backup(s) that back up data as well as apps to be reloaded... think I read somewhere that the standard google backup only backs up apps, not data.
Rooted successfully on 9.0, was easy to follow guide, thanks. But not Motorola update services keeps saying update unsuccessful whenever it tries to install latest security patch. They should download like normal for me right?

If you flash back to stock, you should then be able to take the OTA. I do this with my unlocked XT1900-1 with every update.

Oh yeah, I forgot about that. I haven't rooted a phone since 2010. So jhedfors mentions flashing back to stock to update via OTA but I'd flashing back to stock the only way to get it or can I get the update from Motorola's website and install that way?
Just went back to stock, and I wanted to make sure I usnderstand you all on OTA updates: do we really have to flash back to stock using the full firmware (as in the guide here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x4/how-to/guide-how-to-flash-official-factory-t3808348 ) before OTA? That seems like a lot of work. Is there a way to just temporarily disable Magisk, take the OTA, then re-install Magisk?
Your device does not qualify for bootloader unlocking.
i have amazon prime version
Is there anything I can do?

same peeps thread
aw man... well, I meant to post specifically to the last post in the thread but was on the mobile app.
:good::good: Just wanted to say thank you for this post, the links to the image files and the flash-all BAT file. This really saved my butt with a Project Fi Moto X4, which I had rooted using Magisk before checking on the availability of factory firmware images from Motorola. (of course there are not any available from Motorola ) The phone was continuously prompting for an OTA update, which would fail. I first tried the Magisk uninstaller, which ran successfully in TWRP, but the OTA update was still failing. After some digging on Google I found your post and used the Project Fi image to flash the phone, it worked perfectly! There was an OTA update available after flashing (The May 2018 security patches, "28.2") and it installed successfully. I love the Android community, the XDA community, and folks like yourself who take the time to write posts like this. Seriously, thank you!

Qualcomm EDL - Could this be the point of entry to Root and/or BL Unlock?

Found this series of blog posts that describe the Emergency Download Mode (EDL) on Qualcomm-based mobile devices.
This thread was made for us to discuss the possibilities around this mode and what benefits could we achieve for our phones.
I have not read them completely yet, but there is a mention of a Secure Boot bypass exploit against a Nokia 6.
xiomi EDL mode does allow to PUSH Twrp after altering the FASTBOOT ROM,
if Nokia is providing Fastboot roms then may be!
it doesn't unlock the bootloader! its just push Twrp so that you can flash modes to disable dm varity and magisk

Yes, it works but on Nokia5 and Nokia6 models only. Most of newer models does not switch to EDL mode. The question is still open: how to downgrade October SP to July to have ability of bootloader unlocking and rooting?

I have no choice because I have updated to Oct. SP, my boot is locked and no possibility to roll back or atleast unlock bootloader. So EDL - is the only way to roll back to happy times with the root, freedom and customizing.

I already have a key. I had an unlocked boot but I could not install updates later than July. So I locked the bootloader and successfuly updated August, Sept., Oct. Now I cant unlock the boot with the key I have.

Before July update, YOU got unlock.key,
Then after septemer+ , before Pie-version, did you trie to get the second bootloader-unlock.key? because they changed bootloader? and also I am not sure if they givve away again from oreo and officail app a new unlock.key?
I don't dear to try out, fearing not getting anymore unlock-keys from hmd, need to secure more information.
I am trying to get a new key via official app but it is telling me that google play service isn't installed, although I downloaded open_gapps-arm64-8.0-pico-20190327 and was flashed via twrp and restored to original stock and still the official app is complaining about no play services when I am logged in to google-account inside the phone.
FYI: I donwngraded to oreo 8.0 and for experiment purpose I am trying to test if I will get a new key.
Thank you for replying. My problems are now gone, because I have recieved an official new bootloader unlock key. Now I have 2 keys for old and for new firmwares, so now I can flash anything I want with no fear . I downgraded to Android 7.1.1 and dont want to update any more. Now waiting for custom ROMs.

Thank you I downgraded to 11.0.1 from .7 hoping i would be able to unlock bootloader. I am facing the same error "Device basic data verification failed".
This program has BL Unlock option. Does it work? If so, do i need to remove the account or something? Any suggestions would be really really appreciated.
