Android 11 and OOS11 OnePlus 7 Pro - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

Hello,
I have scoured the forums ever since the update to try and get back to where I was, with TWRP, and a rooted phone. TWRP is not as important as root is.
I saw that there is a way to get root if following these instructions:
Rooting OP7 Pro OOS11
Where can i find instructions to root my phone having Android 11?
forum.xda-developers.com
However, are there any specifics or edge cases I need to be aware of? For example, if I am on the newest update versus the first beta update that rolled around a few months ago? At what point on Android 11 and OOS 11 do these instructions not work?
And I was wondering if someone can please provide some links to make it a bit easier for me (of the boot.img file and other things?), I actually leave the country in a week and so I really want to get this done before I leave, it would really make my life easier
Is there a way I can root without wiping my phone? And if I have to wipe, is there an app similar to Titanium Backup that's reliable that I would be able to use without root and restore some important data of apps?
Thank you!! Any help is appreciated

It's pretty simple. You just need to make sure you flash a patched boot image from the same build your device is on. The OP7 Pro forum is not very organized, and most of the available boot images are gdrive links buried in threads.
If you just so happen to be using the T-Mobile OP7 Pro, then I can help you. Otherwise you'll need to search around for a boot image for your device.
If you can get your hands on a stock boot image, you can copy it to your phone's SD card and use the Magisk Manager app to patch it. It will put the patched boot image in your phone's downloads folder. copy that to your PC and then use fastboot to flash it to your active boot partition

Thank you for the response.
I'm running a OnePlus 7 Pro
Android Version 11
Build Number: Oxygen OS 11.0.1.2.GM31CB
Model: GM1915
Is that the T-Mobile variant?

Yes it is. The boot image linked in this thread is exactly what you need. Flashing boot will not affect your system image or user data.

Thanks!
So after I download this boot image, I flash it using fastboot?
Because TWRP isn't available right?
Then after that, what do I do to root it?
Download the latest magisk?
Do I download the apk or flash that too using fastboot?

If you have a locked bootloader, you can't do anything.
Magisk and root is separate to TWRP on this phone. This image will help you get Magisk installed.

Hi a1291762, as a noob could I ask you a few questions please?
Wanting to downgrade from Q to Pie, could I used your 10.0.20.0 vanilla boot with the Mi Flash Tool using the steps here, and then if I wanted to add root I could use the 10.0.20.0 patched boot with the guide here?

You might want to check that people have been able to downgrade. I know that pie-oreo caused a modem issue.
You need a fastboot image to downgrade. Unless MiFlash has magic (I have never used it).
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-a2-lite/how-to/fastboot-xiaomi-mi-a2-fastboot-images-t3824871
Looks like you'll have to downgrade to 10.0.18.0 and then apply the 10.0.20.0 update, since I do not see a fastboot for 10.0.20.0.
You won't need the vanilla boot image because it is in the fastboot image.
One you have 10.0.20.0 installed you can use the 10.0.20.0 patched boot to install Magisk.

Much appreciated, I had thought your vanilla boot and the fastboot images were the same things, once I downgrade to 10.0.18.0, how would I apply the 10.0.20.0 update as I assume the next xiaomi system update would skip straight to the latest Q build?

I'm not totally sure...
There are links to the OTA zips around. A thread about Android 10 showed how to install one using the stock recovery... I guess the same works for 10.0.20.0?
As a Linux user I would be inclined to try and use command line tools to install the OTA zip... But I don't even know if that's a thing

Thanks dude, I did find it here in the posts, I guess the OP isn't updated anymore, I've just had too many problems with Q, it sucks imo, once I back up everything I'll give it a go, by any chance do you know any good app and general backup apps that make things easy?

I bought titanium backup pro a long time ago and still use it. Back in the day, the free version was annoying for whole device restore. But it's let me move across 5 devices and saved me from losing data on many occasions so I consider it money well spent.
I backup and then rsync /sdcard to a computer daily (CLI tools from cron). For restore I copy the files back (if needed) and then restore.
I only backup user apps, call history and SMS. System apps don't restore properly these days.

T-Mobile IN2017 Root Method?

All of the similar threads just end after a few replies (I think because people didn't have unlocked bootloaders) so I thought I'd try to ask again. I have a T-Mo OP8 (IN2017) on 10.5.22IN55CB. I already have the bootloader unlocked. But all of the root methods I can find need a payload.bin from the stock firmware, and I can't seem to find that. Is there another method or a source for branded firmware? I wasn't sure if I could do it by just booting the TWRP found on this board without flashing the recovery.
TIA.

I booted into TWRP and took a backup of the device. I then transferred the backup to my local PC and took the boot file from the backup, renaming the extension to .img. I then put this boot image on my device and downloaded magisk manager and set magisk manager to install magisk by patching a file. Once completed, I downloaded the patched file to my PC and booted to fastboot. While in fastboot, I flashed the magisk_patched boot image to both boot slots (boot_a, and boot_b). Upon rebooting, I had root. One thing, as soon as you have root, I recommend taking an image of your persist file (for fingerprint) to prevent any issues if the persist partition gets corrupted on your device. Search the forum for instructions on how to do this.
Cheers,
B.D.
You literally don't have to do anything special. Boot TWRP, flash Magisk zip in TWRP, reboot. Done.

I should state one thing that I didn't in my original post. Booting TWRP and flashing that way ONLY works if you are still running Android 10. Since you have a T-Mobile variant, I knew this was a non-issue (we STILL don't have official A11). For those running Android 11, you do have to patch the boot image and flash it like stated above. Also note that this will likely change if we get TWRP on A11. Once we have that working, flashing Magisk from it should work fine.

Following up on this just in case you know anything new. My IN2017 just updated to A11 without any action on my part, and I lost root. Is there a TWRP or patched boot img that you know of for us on TMo now?
There is no working twrp for us on Android 11. I also haven't seen a patched boot image of 11.0.1.3.IN55CB around yet. I have that firmware extracted on my laptop so I could grab the boot image and patch it for you, but I won't be able to do that until later tomorrow. If no one else has it out or if you don't find it before I can get to it, I'll post it up.
Edit: Here's the patched boot image: Magisk Patched Boot IMG TMO 11.0.1.3

OnePlus 7 pro oos 11 beta 1 TWRP and root

Hello everyone.
I was wondering if anyone has found a work around to get a custom recovery to work on the oos 11 beta one for op7p gm1917.
I've tried msm tool and have working TWRP untill I install ops 11.
Once I install the beta 1 and TWRP booting to recovery is stuck in a flashing TWRP logo. Only way to recover from this is to flash stock boot image.
I do have root as I patched the stock boot.img with magisk 8.0.4 then flashed the boot image with fastboot.
If anyone could help me get this TWRP up and running I would definitely appreciate it.
Thank you...

Thanks, buddy.
You guys can flash a zip of twrp like orangefox dual boot. Right after the ota in twrp. With a pen drive to get twrp in OS11. No need to actually use a dualboot its just a really nice build I use it.
Anyone tried this method? https://www.droidwin.com/update-oneplus-to-android-11-oxygenos-11-via-twrp-without-losing-root/

Hi all,
I tried to root my new oneplus 8t but stupidly enough i downloaded and used a wrong stock boot image (i need EU but used global).
Now my phone is stuck in bootloop, can someone assist please?
Or maybe someone can share with me a working patched file for EU (as i can't do that as my phone is not responsive anymore).
I tried to do so with magisk app.
Thanks in advance!

Have your tried flashing the correct boot image? If all you did was flash the incorrect boot image then that should fix the problem.

In order to flash the correct one, i need to transfer it to the device and use magisk.
The problem is that the device stuck in boot loop so i can't do that.
That's why i asked if someone has already patched Europe version to share with me or any other option for me to fix it
Here is a collection of stock boot images (if you don't trust them, just extract it using a payload dumper from the ota zip that can be found in other threads)
OnePlus 8T Stock Boot Image Collection and Installation Guide
Download the stock boot image of all OxygenOS versions for the OnePlus 8T. Also learn how to flash a boot image on OnePlus 8T using Fastboot and TWRP.

Either flash or just boot the stock image in flashboot.
Copy stock image to phone and patch with magisk
Copy patched stock image to PC

The thread referenced previously is the solution.
There is no other tool or method that will resolve your issue.
If you follow the instructions correctly it will work.
If you are confused on the instruction I suggest searching youtube and you will find many videos that will walk you through the process.

TWRP 3.5.2 not working / Root trough magisk patched boot.img

Hey guys
I need your help to be happy having my phone rooted....
After update to android 11 I try to install TWRP 3.5.2 but the phone stuck on fastboot screen and TWRP not opens. So, I found an another way to root the device patching boot.img trough magisk, even it not pass on SafetyNet validation.
The root works but after reboot the phone lose it.
Some one have a solution for root on android 11?
Thanks for your help.
At the moment the TWRP in android 11 is giving problems when the mobile is encrypted does not work, you would have to make a backup and decrypt the phone to be able to use it. Any questions let me know
You need to decrypt your data and stay decrypted to get twrp working in A11.
And for the magisk part (assuming you don't wanna use twrp and stay encrypted), after booting using the patched boot image, open Magisk app, then select the Install option, then Direct Install. And that's it. You won't lose root access after reboot.

Are you referring to the patched boot.img you make yourself using Magisk? I've tried that myself, but the phone keeps being stuck at the boot logo (not a boot loop). I'm always forced to flash the original boot.img file to make the phone operational again.

You patched the boot.img yourself? I mean did you get the proper image using payload dumper? It should have booted. Check it again and try. If that doesn't help you still, decryption is the way to go. I have been decrypted since a long time, with a working twrp.

I thought TWRP wasn't/isn't fully supported on Android 11?
And yes, I used the proper proper image as I grabbed the entire package using Oxygen Updater, while using the patched version to update the OS. And if I didn't get the proper image, I would assume reverting back to the original boot.img (from the full package) wouldn't have worked.

It is, if and only if you're decrypted. TWRP doesn't support encryption on A11.
