Which device should I get for LineageOS? - General Questions and Answers

Hello everyone! I want to buy a new device and flash Lineage OS to it. However, I've been stuck between the OnePlus 6 and OnPlus 6T. (Not interested on Google phones or GraphenOS).
Which one would you suggest me to buy? I've seen that there are two people who maintain the operating system (LineageOS) of OnePlus 6 and only one on OnePlus 6T.
Are there any problems or major diffrences between the two devices?
Is LineageOS [enchilada] as easy to install as LineageOS [fajita]?
Is OnePlus 6 as easy to unbrick as OnePlus 6T?
Which of the two devices do you think will be maintained the longest by its developers for what reason?
Which one has the most potential?
Is OnePlus 6 or 6T going to die any soon and get abandoned by the community and it's developers?
Are there any important quetions I forgot to ask you and things you should consider telling me before picking any of those devices?
Sorry for having so many questions, I'm new to the whole area, all I want is to just pick the right device and not waste my money on something that might be abandoned in a few months or is extremly hard for a beginner like me to unbrick!

[Q] Can someone explain the difference between Oppo, Cyanogen Inc. and OnePlus?

I'm really confused, I thought the OnePlus One was made by Oppo in partnership with Cyanogen Inc. but at least according to the wikipedia articles (Cyanogen, OnePlus, Oppo) there doesn't seem to be such a cohesive connection. Does anyone have an explanation?
Note that the OnePlus wiki page keeps changing...

oneplus is its own company. oppo is an investor and does some of the manufacturing. cyanogen licenses cm11s to oneplus for its international units. be careful, people pull out their tinfoil hats over this.

OnePlus is the company who designs/produces/sells the phone, ie. it's their device. Oppo is the company who is manufacturing it for them. OnePlus was actually started by an ex Oppo exec and last I heard, the speculation was that OnePlus is actually a spinoff company from Oppo. Cyanogen Inc is providing the software. Before they were an actual company, Cyanogen was the most popular custom ROM amongst the modding community. So this phone essentially ships with the ROM that most people flashed on their other devices.
Basically, the device is publicly a collaboration between OnePlus and Cyanogen, with Oppo working behind the scenes. Hope that answers your question.

[Completed] Recommend Dual-Sim, Stock(-ish) Android Phone, 200$

Gents,
Will be travelling lots for my job in the next few years. Would like to get a dual-sim phone. Current phone is a Nexus 5X, which I do love, and that I got precisely because of stock Android - just about every single one of the Asian skins is complete anathema to me.
Budget is around 200 U.S., though could be convinced to spend a bit more if there's a sizeable gain to be had. Priorities : processing power, stability.
I ask here because I'm pretty sure I'll have to delve into the custom ROM scene, which I'm totally not afraid to do (I've flashed a fair number of ROMs before), but I'm afraid I might be forgetting a phone that has high community support. I know the obvious choice is OnePlus, but the 3/3T is way out of my budget.
My best options, I think, are either Redmi Note 3 or Mi5. Potentially a OnePlus 2, but those are a bit higher-priced. Any others you can think of, that are powerful and well-supported?
Cheers!

ATTN DEVS: OnePlus is giving away three OnePlus 6 phones for free. Apply here.

Apply to get a Free OnePlus 6 for your Development Projects
OnePlus has a long history of always supporting the development community when it comes to their devices. They have been consistent with offering phones that can easily be unlocked and flashed with different ROMs and recoveries. They're one of the few companies that allow you to unlock the bootloader of your phone without any requirement of an unlock key. They are also quick to release their kernel sources to encourage development.
Now OnePlus is taking another big step in showing their support of the development community. They are sending out 36 free OnePlus 6 units to different developers so that they can get to work on creating great ROMs, Kernels, and other modifications to the device.
Leave a comment in this thread telling us why you think you deserve a free OnePlus 6 and what kind of development projects you would bring to the community. There are three untis still up for grabs.
Update: All units have been claimed. Thanks for participating!
Hi suggest my name ..I am working on aoscp for one plus 6/3/3t
Low Latency Kernel coz why not
I was working on orion os on the Moto g and later on oneplus x. I also have several threads here in OpX section. So I think it would be great if I could get the device for testing and building purposes.
I think I should have one because I used to develop themes, modifications and many more for Sony Xperia devices. I have been active on XDA for over 5 years and I would like to make more contribution to the community. Thanks !
Bcoz I am ROM tester for many devices.
+ I already own OnePlus 6 as daily driver so other device can be used exclusively for ROM testing
I'm the developer of Discovery ROM. I'm a developer and a computer science student. I want to test on it my projects (actual and future), I have a lot of things ready to be developed (some apps and a lot of very interesting exclusive features for my ROM). With the OnePlus 6 all these things would be easier to develop and test.
I'm 1 of 2 lead devs for https://github.com/AquariOS and would love to make AquariOS for op6
Hi. I'm one of the two developers of Havoc-OS and I also have a variant of the Modded Google Camera. I am also a bit of a themer and have made a subs overlay for Transparent In-Call UI for Google Dialer. These are my current projects. In the past I have been a part of Zenity-N, Z-Unleashed, Unleash-OS and OxygenOS System Mods. I would really like to get a OnePlus 6. I've been a huge fan of OnePlus since OnePlus One days. I know I'm not too qualified developer but I learn as I go and I've come a long way since I started. I really like this phone and if I win, it will give me an opportunity to work on Havoc-OS for OnePlus 6.
Hi, my name is Sergio. I'm an Italian engineering student, I want to work on the appearance of the Rom and test new ROMS and fix them if needed. I'm a tester for any One Plus roms and kernels. Give me a chance to work with you! It's a dream. I actually use OP3
Hi, I'm Sai, a developer interning for the Substratum team and would really appreciate an additional device for testing and debugging several of our projects on the device, as OOS has some of its own quirks that may need some additional testing. Additionally I am also a Substratum themer, meaning that I could add support for OOS 5.1.5+ on my theme.
Theme's GitHub page:
https://github.com/InFlames03/Oreo-Theme
I am 1 of 2 Founder/Developer of PureFusionOS, Currently Deving on LG G6 H872 and Past HTC10, Would consider porting our ROM and deving on the OP6 if giving the opportunity..
I'm active member in development of both my present Honor 7x and Past K3 Note devices.
My previous works include a 3.1.1 twrp recovery for K3 Note , Flashable Face Unlock Zips for Android 5.1+, AOSP based themes for Honor 7x.I can sure do much more if I get a device like OnePlus 6 .
As the OnePlus 6 supports Project Treble I will try to build a Stable TWRP with vendor partition and Ressurection Remix Rom if possible .
Build rom and kernel for yureka and zuk devices .
Now i want to work for OnePlus 6 device (ROMS & KERNEL).

Hello,
I work on the Dirty Unicorns project which currently is not shared on XDA, but we are still a popular project. Alternatively, I also work on the unicornblood kernel for the devices I support (many of which, to include the OP5).
Please keep me in consideration.
I would love to have the chance to get a OnePlus 6!
I develop official AICP for the OnePlus 3 so have good knowledge regarding the OnePlus community and OnePlus devices in general. AICP is a highly customisable ROM which is very popular in a lot of communities, and I can't see why the OnePlus 6 community would be any different
I am part of the Exynos 5420 team, where we bring official LineageOS and AICP to older devices, such as Galaxy Tab S devices and Galaxy Note Tablet devices.
I'm an official LineageOS member working on my exynos device and would like to bring AICP to the OnePlus 6 and use it to further my knowledge of developing custom ROMs for devices
Thanks!
Make it 35 and give one to a tester. I'll be glad to test and report bugs to those 35 developers
I have been working on mediatek devices for one year and definitely want to hands on snapedragon 845.I have limited resources but can be your beta tester , guaranteed.
* Please give chance to junior members*
My contribution to mediatek 6592
Aicp
Benstalk
Xosp
Aokp
Bliss
Crdroid
Mokee and many more
. First few members in mediatek family to crossport CyanogenMod 13 from mtk 6582 (bugfree).
If i would be given op6 then i would surely increase my coding skills.
@HolyAngel
Because his kernel and custom OMNI rom is on another level. Battery friendly and smoothest experience. Period. If you don't believe me, ask all 200 members in his Telegram chat. Most guys there said they'll be getting device which HolyAngel gets next.
Testing is in my blood
Well, I’m not really a developer but I am the kind of person who has all the time in the world. I dont do much since I’m a student so I can dedicate my time in testing rom, kernels and whatever xda can throw at me.
I’d like to work with the various great devs to test their contributions and make them suitable for public release.
I’m coming from the Xioami Mi5 community and I’ve been very active there. However, sadly my phone broke into pieces recently. So I could use a huge upgrade as the OnePlus 6. Considering the goodness of the phone, I’d be more keen to use the time I idle away in testing xda goodies and make OnePlus 6 community a great place.
P.S Yes I know how to take logs and all the rest.

Screw Samsung!

This is my first post and sorry for the ramble!
I am venturing off of iPhones and onto Androids because I have a big issue with spending $1000 on an iPhone XS Max unlocked phone and not being "allowed" to play with root. iOS 12.2 and up is not jailbreak-able... yet. Secondly, I have made some mistakes on my choice of Android phones too. I did not study up enough and have now bought 3 Androids and now have the 4th one on order (OnePlus 7 Pro). I should have looked at ROMs and MODs before deciding which to buy.
In the past two months I have purchased a Samsung Galaxy S8 because the price was decent... Now I am ready to give it to a xda developer for research and development. I am on my 4th 7 day wait period for oem lock to show up. I was almost there and didn't realize auto updates was on and 9.0 Pie installed overnight! Uggggh.
Then I bought a Moto G7 not realizing there wasn't much work being done with kernels and roms. I did root it and I do use it, but I wan't more.
Then I went back to Best Buy to grab a Pixel 3 XL only to find that they were out of stock. So, I made mistake 3... I bought a Pixel 3a XL. I rooted it, but not finding too much else being developed on it like the 3 XL.
I am a Linux fan and run 3 different Distros (Linux Mint, Kali Linux, and Fedora) and what I really want is a GOOGLE FREE Linux phone. I wanted to "Google Free" the Google Pixel 3 XL, but now all my efforts will be spent on the OnePlus 7 Pro making it a Google Free Linux phone.
So now I have two iPhones, (XS Max and XR), iPad, and three Android phones that I will have to do something with. LOL.
Anyways, I will be on here from time to time studying and hope to get to know some of you guys.

That's one plan as soon as a get a phone that they support, lol. There is great options like LineageOS available for the OnePlus that I ordered. Google was great back when they were the new search engine with new algorithm... Now they have grown into a world controlling monster and are in everything.
I downloaded the data they had on me.... 9.8 gigs of everything, everywhere and who with and how. Way too much data collection.
I'm trying to figure out why screw Samsung when you left auto update on.
Sounds like your trying to justify not studying before you buy a major purchase like this most of these devices have been out long enough. Not like you bought one on release day then was blasted with a locked bootloader. I have a us locked bootloader s8 and have had my share of issues with Samsung in general and I still laugh at posts such as these

Yes Mr. Obvious, I did. As I posted, I am moving off of Apple to Android and have a lot to learn. Maybe I should change the topic title to "Screw Samsung, Apple, Timers on bootloaders, Unlockable bootloaders in general, and Forum trolls." :silly:

Yes again you are correct, however, I clearly admitted "I did not study up enough" and have now bought 3 Androids and now have the 4th one on order (OnePlus 7 Pro). "I should have looked at ROMs and MODs before deciding which to buy." in case you missed it... :good: The Samsung S8 has been out since April 21st 2017 in the US with the Snapdragon processor, so it could be a lack of interest in the S8 that is the problem. The Moto G7 was released on March 20, 2019 but I rooted it the day same day I bought it without time delays etc. The Pixel 3a XL was release on May 8, 2019 and I was also able to root it on the day I bought it. These phone manufacturers should realize that there would be a nice increase in sales if they would make unlocking the bootloader easier like OnePlus and Google has. They have Knox and fuses that protect them from warrantying rooted phones anyways. OnePlus will soar in sales this year with theirs with encouraging aftermarket dev work and their OxygenOS. Google Dev is close in this developer programs. SO, screw Samsung. But in their defense... they make some awesome products.

Well, laugh away big boy. These forums always seem to have people that like to ridicule newbies. I'm 56 years old and own a Ethical Hacking and Penetration Testing company that also has a vBulletin information and development forums site, so I am aware of the games. To me, my post sounds funny, not *****y, but I also understand that it can be difficult to convey emotions and feelings by typing words.
I run into a lot of these technical roadblocks too when attempting to help a major corporations secure their systems from cyber threats. It's one of the reasons I have three different Linux OS distributions on my laptop with grub handling the multi-boot. Each distro has it's own great qualities.... just as these Android phone makes and models.
Have a good day young man.

Ahhhhhh it's not on you. I've in my time seen several of the posts and love to stir the pot. I've been in the same situation myself buying used devices. Thinking surely there would be something for it and plenty of times not.
I'm not opposed to having someone mail me phones for development if that's what you mean lol.
I'm on my 3rd S8 now lol.

BTW, tomorrow at 3:00 I am picking up a OnePlus 6T McLaren that I located. Then on the 9th, the OnePlus 7 Pro should be here. I'm going to be in hog heaven playing with these gadgets.

Google Pixel's ioXt’s security certification - Is This Good?

My present device is a OnePlus 5T, I also recently bought for someone a OnePlus 8, don't ask why, I'm starting to wonder when I consider how in the past, OnePlus is suppose to be known for their Data Collection, it really makes me question ever buying from OnePlus again.
So, the question is this ioXt’s security certification something really good? It sounds like this is going to be, or is becoming some sort of Global Standard, I'm not sure, but after seeing this, it made me think Google is going to be more on track with privacy/security in their phones?
Anyhow, after seeing this, I'm really holding out to see about getting a Pixel4 5G when they release.
I hope people will reply to this post and share their thoughts here on ioXt, and Pixel?
THANKS
