One AttaBoy for someone who can tell me how to change the default Contacts app on Pixel 4a running 11? - Google Pixel 4a Questions & Answers

How do I change the default Contacts app on Pixel 4a running Android 11??? Aftering searching for the answer, I can tell you:
1. It is not under Apps & Notifications / Default Apps. (Yes, some apps are listed, but Contacts is not listed.)
2. It is not by Apps / Contacts / Open by default. (It says, "No defaults set")
3. I don't want to run a different launcher. I just want to use a different Contacts app.
It seems like a simple thing, I just can not figure it out.
Any help would be appreciated...

Try installing a new contacts app, then when you try an operation that normally would invoke the contacts app, it should pop up a dialog to select which contacts app should be the default (the built in one or the new one you installed).
Also, it might say "no default app" if there is only one contacts app installed on the device (so there is nothing to choose between), so trying the above will test that theory.

Sorry, should have included that info. Phone has both standard Contacts and a second app "Smart Contacts".

Maybe I figured it out. Loaded third contact app and got the choice for default! Apparently Smart Contacts does not register as a Contacts app... Thanks for the help.

Then certain apps, like the built-in phone app might be hard-coded to use the built-in contacts app for certain functions (but not all contact functions), just like the built-in camera app is hard-coded to use the built-in photos app to preview just taken pictures.
But for things like clicking on a phone number in an email should display a "Select Contact app" if you have two contact apps installed (and you have not selected a default contacts app after installing the second contacts app)

So when that "select contact app" dialog box finally did appear (after you installed the third app), are you saying that "Smart Contacts" wasn't in that list?

yup. When I loaded "Simpler Contacts" app and triggered the contacts, I got a choice between "Contacts" (Google's installed app) and Simpler. Smart Contacts did not appear in the list. (I know Smart Contacts was functional. It would load my contacts when opened.)
I really appreciate the help with this...

Stock Contacts "Add New Contact" wont sync to selected group

Hi there,
After finally getting the Android Stock Contacts app on my Desire, I'm finally able to use the "Sync Group" option to only show one group (let's call it "cormie) in the phone book. This is all fine, I have ticked off all other groups and only "cormie" is ticked on. It displays the "cormie" contacts and the contacts on the SIM (I can delete them off it later I guess) but the main objective is to just use the "cormie" contacts and nothing else.
However, when I go to add a new contact and save it, when I sync it to Gmail, the new entry doesn't show up in "cormie" but only in "all contacts" and once the contact is saved on the phone, it doesn't appear in the phone book because I'm only showing "cormie" contacts and it's not there To see the entry I have to go back in and to show all contacts, then I see it.
This puts a great hindrance on the purpose of the Sync Group option. The guy in post 10 here seems to have got it going, but as you can see in my reply, post 11, it's not saving to the desired group for me!
I'd really appreciate if anyone has a solution for this and could explain how to get it working properly. Or is there an alternative contacts program that will do it? Also, if anyone knows how to not display SIM contacts in the phonebook please share too
Any feedback appreciated at all!
Brilliant! I think I got a workaround
When I first started using the phone after rooting it, I selected "contacts" to be the default for all the options and it actually turns out that the Sense "people" app allows you to save a contact to a group even though it doesn't allow you to "sync groups", choosing which groups you want to sync only, so I needed to get the "people" app to be the default for adding contacts.
What I had to do was go to the main menu > settings > applications > manage applications > scroll down to contacts > and press "clear defaults"
This clears "contacts" as being the default for all the phonebook related actions. If you go back to the home screen and click "phone" you can set "contacts" as the default for this, but then when you go to add a new contact in contacts, it will ask what app you want to add a contact with, click set as default and click the "people" app. Now all "add to contact" actions will be carried out using "people" app, here you can select the group you wish to save it to and then it will show up perfectly in the "contacts" "contacts" menu and will be synched correctly to the chosen group on Gmail!
I think, after 18 days of buying it, I'm finally ready to put my normal sim card in the phone and start using it as a phone! Finally!
I realize this is WAY later than the original post, but have any of you found a solution to not being able to add a new contact to the group you want to add it to? I'm using an HTC Hero (cdma) that I Froyoed with aospmod 2.2.1, so I cannot use the htc "people" app - at least I read that. Sorting by groups is mucho importante to me and I find the default contacts app built into aospmod lacking in this area.
Thanks if you even reply to this!

[Q] Homescreen Contact Shortcut defaults

Does anyone know how to change the defaults for a homescreen contact shortcut?
When you click the shortcut to a contact on the homescreen, several options come up at the top of the screen depending on what methods of communication you have for that person: Phone, Contact details, Text, Email, Map...
If there is more than one option for a particular communication method (say, you have both corporate email and gmail setup, when you click on the email icon, it will ask you which to use. When you click on "set default" it will always use what you chose.
Problem is, I chose the wrong method when I clicked "set default" and now I can't change it back. It wants to use my corporate account to send with rather than my gmail accound. And since it pulls up corporate email when you click on the email icon, it won't let you change the "from" to anything other than a corporate (exchange) account. (I have 2, and both show up, but not gmail.)
Anyway, it's a long read, but I was hoping someone knew how to reset the default.
I have tried:
- removing/recreating the shortcut
- changing my default email method in email accounts
- changing contact detailsm addresses, etc
Any help?
I am not sure if I am understanding your question(s) exactly correct. Try these and see if it helps.
Answer to your first question.
1. Click on contact shortcut.
2. Select "contacts" icon.
3. Press "menu" button to bring up options
4. select "Mark as default"
From here you can select all the default contact numbers, emails and addresses.
If I understood your last question, this should help.
1. Launch email app.
2. Long click on account you want to make default.
3. Scroll down and select "account settings"
4. There should be a selection (4th one down) for "Default Account". Check the radio button.
The default account should not be switched to the currently selected email account.

Okay, this will set the default for that contact, but I guess what I am missing is the Gmail icon in the list of contact options when I click on the shortcut.
I want to send from my Gmail account to this contact rather than from corporate, but there doesn't seem to be a way to make Gmail my default...
This has me thinking now... maybe I need to drop and recreate the contact in google contacts and remove from my corporate contacts.

So you want to add an extra menu item for gmail in the shortcut drop down menu?
Not sure how you would do this but I think it's a good idea.

I overcame this by adding my gmail as an account for the email manger instead of using the gmail specific application that comes with android. Now when I launch the email app I get a list of 3 accounts (gmail, hotmail, corporate). The currently default account has a check next to it. I have mine on gmail during the weekend and corporate during the week (Tasker FTW). The downside to this is that gmail seems to run a bit slower at times (few seconds) when syncing but not enough to make me change it back. I like having all the accounts in one place with the same management and notifications.

...just read the post again...I think i get it!
You want your default outgoing account to be based on the specific contact?
As in:
You email Joe Smith with gmail by default and Jane Andrews with corporate by default without making changes to account settings.

Only display contacts with numbers

Can someone show me how to only display contacts with numbers? It was really easy to do it on the M7 that I came from, but I don't see the option on the opo. I tried looking at all the menus on the phone and tried searching on the forums but could not find a solution. Any help would be appreciated.

For now, what i do is select edit for a contact with a phone number. Scroll down to the "group" field. Add a new field and name it "my phone", for example. Select that group for your contact.
Then go back out to your list of contacts, in settings select "Contacts to display", select customize, select the drop down menu from your gmail acc, then only check the group named "my phone" box. If you go back to your contacts list, you will see only that contact. Now, the tedious part is to go into all your contacts that has a number and putting them into that "my phone" group.
Dispaly only phone contacts in one plus one
Hi,
Go to contacts, then go to "Contacts on Display" then go to customize ..... click the drop down of gmail account where you can deselect the contacts .
with this you can only see phone contacts when you open the the contacts app.
Hope this helps you guys.

It kinda did. But for some reason I need some of those contacts. It is weird that Android doesn't have a natural way of joining same contacts together. I used an App for it once, but that made a mess.

[APP][4.2+] Social Contact Photo Sync

Social Contact Photo Sync
Just try this app. It allows to link local contacts with social contacts and to keep the local contacts automatically in sync with a linked social contact.
It supports:
GooglePlus
Twitter
Instagram
Facebook (only with ROOT and the original facebook app)
WhatsApp (you have to force whatsapp to download new pictures by opening a contacts picture in whatsapp, the rest is handled by the app)
Viber (still in there, actually, this is currently not really usable, you can just link a contact with a viber picture, but you can't sync with new picutures)
The app tells you in more detail, what you have to care about, if you want to automatically sync your contact pictures...
Any feedback or suggestion is appreciated.
The app is completely free, the in app purchase just removes the adds. Functionality is free
Get the app from the playstore: Social Contact Photo Sync
Guide/Tutorial: http://www.michaelflisar.com/social-contact-photo-sync-general/
how can i force the app to automatch the contct sync???
Start the batch auto sync setup dialog and click the headers of the groups (like 90 to 100% and so on, all the way down to 0 to 10% if you really want that), this will select the complete group at once. This way you can select all your contacts and use the best match as auto sync contact...
I still advice you to once look through the list and disable or correct all the wrong matches... Afterwards my advice would be to scroll through your contacts and only look at the ones withaut an auto sync contact and if you know you have this friend in one network, manually set up those contacts one by one... This is my prefered way to do it...
PS: a complete guide is online here: http://www.michaelflisar.com/social-contact-photo-sync-general/
Is there any place where I can download older versions? Becuase I wanna test if I am doing something wrong (even if I believe I do the same as earlier) or the last 2 versions are buggy in importing facebook friends via csv copy - getting error code 14.
this error code comes from using the root method normally - just change the root method of facebook to method 3, this one should work (click on the facebook card on the home screen and click setup facebook)
If you really just want to import the csv and don't have a facebook app installed and are not rooted, then just send a feedback via the app after something went wrong...

I am on Android N Preview 3 which is not working with the root method. And meawhile, I realized that the fault is mine, not the app's. I opened the csv file with a different text editor (Solid Explorer's), not with that one which I used earlier (MiXplorer's text editor) and somehow it showed in a different format I guess which I copied and the app didn't like that. I reinstalled MiXplorer, opened the csv file with it, copy paste and now it's importing fine again.

any way to avoid the dinosaur-official fb app?
Either use the non root method or just deinstall the Facebook app again after my app has imported the contacts
Opened WhatsApp image bt nothing happened.
The app says we need to manually open WhatsApp image then share it to this app then select which contact to be changed.
Sent from my XT1562 using XDA-Developers mobile app
@prom85 Could you please let me know where all the pictures are stored (exact location)?

Whereever your Android contacts app does save it. Normally it's a database.
You can force my app to auto sync all contacts without checking if an image was changed though, go to general settings, click on advanced settings and click on the last entry in the dialog that pops up... afterwards an auto sync will overwrite an contacts image with an active auto sync without checking if the images has changed or not
I just purchased the pro version! I have had android for seven or eight years but never really had correct contact photos so thank you for this wonderful app. It makes it so easy. I noticed this app's logo shows the linkedin logo but syncing with the linkedin network isn't obvious to me. How can I do this?
LinkedIn is not working anymore. I had a root method that worked once, but then they changed their app and now this method is not working anymore.
Official LinkedIn integration is not possible either (via login to LinkedIn), I already tried it but they won't accept my app. As a primary business network they do not accept apps that access data in background without direct user interaction, this is against their usage rules.
I'm still getting the {"code": 403, "error_type": "OAuthForbiddenException", "error_message": "You are not a sandbox user of this client"} when trying to add Instagram. Just wanted to know if everyone else is still seeing this?

Everyone should have this error... LinkedIn changed their usage rules at 01.06.2016, so I had to submit my app again and currently am waiting for approval... I'm not sure if they will though...

Contacts app missing features on S9/S9+ compared to older phones

On all my previous devices, from an Android 4 tablet to a Samsung Galaxy S6, the Contacts app had a neat feature that allowed you to choose which contacts to display (in Contacts, Phone, and make accessible to any other app with access to contacts list).
You could choose between:
all contacts
contacts from a specific account (choose from Phone, SIM, gmail account, etc)
custom list (checklist from multiple accounts and groups defined within each account)
S9/S9+ Contacts app simply shows you all contacts from all accounts, with no option to narrow down the selection.
In the Contacts app (only) you can have it display contacts from one account, or one group from an account.
However all apps that have access to contacts see and use all contacts from all accounts, regardless. That includes Phone app, ofcourse (the only option in Phone is to display all or contacts with phone nr. only).
I had great use of that feature because I had it use only contacts from specific groups.
Now I have a lot of clutter.
Samsung official response was: that feature was intentionally removed from Contacts app.
I couldn't find many viable alternatives on Play store, I tried a few, mostly bloatware, apparently. Also, Google Contacts, while still having some sort of filtering builtin, can't seem to integrate it properly.
I am looking for a way to regain that level of filtering what contacts to use, without rooting the phone (I got it from work and could get into a lot of trouble if I root it).
Thank you.

No, that is not it.
That is only a display selection in Contacts app only. You can choose to display one account or one group, but no multiple selection of accounts/groups.
Furthermore, this has no effect on the contacts exported to all apps, including Phone. Phone will still show you the entire list of contacts, regardless of what you are looking at in Contacts app.
The following were taken from a Huawei P7 I still have, they illustrate what I also had in older and newer (at least S6):
Open contacts app (or via Phone->contacts).
Open menu
Choose "Contacts to display".
S9 contacts only allow you to limit displayed contacts to those with phone number.
What is missing is the selection of a single account and customize (bottom)
In this screen I selected one entire account (phone) and only one group from the gmail account:
Only these contacts will be visible (on Huawei P7, Samsung S6 and others) in Phone app, SMS app, etc.
Samsunt S9 shows all contacts from all accounts in Phone app, SMS app, etc.
So how to re add this option on new S9 10 ? someone found a solution ?
