Flashing Kernel Patch for RMM on unsupported Note 9 caused it to stop booting - General Questions and Answers

Hello,
I've been trying to root my Note 9 using the "N960F_DS_N_Oreo_Root_for_OEM_issue_devices_V5" which I've found online and i believe it is based on what was developed by Dr. Ketan.
While flashing this setup, I selected "Proceed with ROM Flash and Multi tool", "Patch for OEM issue", "Flash Kernel Patch for RMM" and then "Root with Magisk". Once the installation is done and the device is rebooted, the phone no longer boots. It shows the logo Galaxy Note 9 powered by Android then black screen then loop again to Galaxy Note 9 logo and it stays in this loop. I can only break the loop by entering to the Download Mode and loading TWRP and staying there.
I'm suspecting that the "Flash Kernel Patch for RMM" that I've selected is not supported on my Note 9 Model.
Is there a way to revert back this change? or may be install back the default kernel?
Appreciate your help!
Regards,
Elias

As I can see you are proud owner of a softbricked phone.
My recommendation: re-flash phone's Stock ROM to get rid off of all mods you applied to the phone.

Thanks for your help.
I've downloaded this: https://androidfilehost.com/?fid=4349826312261705548
It's around 4.8GB. Is this what you're referring to?
Just to give some background, the phone got an accidental factory reset (which I still don't understand how) and i'm trying to retrieve at least some of the deleted data (mainly pictures/videos). All the recovery tools requested to have the phone rooted in order to do a deep scan. So I started this learning journey myself since no phone repair store was off help.
Would reflashing the phone stock ROM affect my chances of retrieving my data?
Thanks!

The Factory Reset performed erased all your user data: though they are still physically present on device, their entry in Android's MTF got removed. IMO it requires a forensic tool to recover them.
As soon as you re-flash the phone with Stock ROM the disk space utilised by user data again gets wiped ( means a new MFT gets created), so the chance to recover user data previously stored there is NULL.

I was checking this thread on this form: https://4pda.to/forum/index.php?showtopic=915992&st=520
it seems that it's the same problem as mine and he was able to resolve it by flashing the original kernel. Not sure how i can do the same.

hmmm, what i understood is that if I go and flash the phone with Stock ROM (to make it boot again) I'll lose any chance of getting my data back even with a forensic tool. Is that what you meant?
So I was trying to say that what if I just flash back the original kernel to solve my booting issue, would it also affect the possibility of retrieving the lost data?
Unless I'm confused with the terminologies and flashing kernel is the same as flashing the Stock ROM. I'm quite new to this .
I appreciate your help!

@EN90
As with Android
Kernel is the core part of Android OS and is based on Linux. It is the system which initializes, configures and sets all hardware components for use. It prepares the complete system for functioning. It consits of several sub-systems and services.
Stock ROM is a read only memory chip on the phone's motherboard that contains the Android OS image that boots every time you turn on your phone. A ROM contains full Android OS system and a few system apps that comes pre installed with the device.

Experienced User seeking help on a Semi Bricked N5

Hey guys. Before I get to my issue and seek your help , please allow me to give you a bit of background about my self wrt Android OS and nexus devices. I have been a Nexus device user since the N1 days. OS flashing , Custom rom's , kernel patching , etc are nothing new to me. I can safely say that I am a custom rom addict , hence I know the mods for my devices intricately well. With this out of the way , I'd like to share the sequence of events that took place yesterday , which lead to this new thread , wherein I desperately need some expert advice.
- I was running the latest Bigxie 5.0 rom for my 32gb N5. It had root and TWRP and elementalx kernel
- I wanted to upgrade to the 5.0.1 without losing any data , so I first tried to sideload the OTA zip file , which failed with some error. I then followed this guide (http://bit.ly/1wNT36l) . I was able to therefore flash the 5.0.1 without losing data. I re rooted my phone , re flashed the recovery and the kernel
- At the same time I was upgrading my LG g3 to Lollipop. I wanted to try the "Tap & Go" data transfer feature , so I used that process to transfer the data from my current N5 to the new G3. Here is when the issue started. The data transfer didn't go through , as only the email accounts transferred to the G3. At the same time , I got this notification on the Nexus that Tap and Go was used to transfer my email accounts , and this notification couldn't be cleared from the notification panel. For some odd reason , I decided to jump back into recovery and wipe cache and dalvik cache to get rid of this notification
- As soon as I did that specific wipe and restarted the phone , the phone would just loop at the nexus image boot screen. 15 minutes later I went back into recovery and decided to use the "factory reset wipe". That too didn't solve my problem. Frustrated at the turn of events , I reflashed Bigxie's 5.0 rom from my internal storage , via twrp.
- The phone finally booted! But now the problem was that my Sdcard was showing no files. It was all blank. I checked with root explorer / es explorer and even when I hooked up my phone to my pc , the sdcard was showing no files. I could , however , see all my files in the root -- data -- media -- 0 folder. I tried my best to extract all my files from there , but each time I got an error that pretty much meant that no files could be moved from there. Interestingly , when I went into twrp , and went into file manager in the advanced options , it showed all my files on the sdcard as though nothing went wrong. So I could see everything on the sdcard in recovery , but nothing if i booted into the OS.
- Since I had made a backup of most of my data prior to any this happening , with the exception of certain whatsapp data , and after having spent almost 5-6 hours in figuring out where I had possibly gone wrong , I decided to wipe my device clean and just install the stock OS and pack this device away for good
- I downloaded the stock factory image for 5.0 from the official site and went back into bootloader and fastboot flashed each and every file. The phone booted , BUT , now my phone showed only 12GB as the size of the storage with 11GB available. This frazzled me beyond words! How did I reach this stage wherein my internal storage was screwed to this level?
- I again went back into bootloader , flashed 5.0.1 , wiped the device and now the phone is again stuck in a bootloop on the nexus bootscreen
I have finally decided to send the device to the LG service center near my office , but I wanted to share this experience with the community hear and seek their guidance on where I possibly went wrong and what I can do now to put things back together to some degree of normality. Have I somehow damaged something at the hardware level that a change of motherboard may be warranted or is this a pure software screwup?
Thank you for your patience in reading this loooooong story , but I had to explain each and every step in perfect detail.
after flashing stock image.. there is no need to wipe anything... just boot it... takes around 5-10mins max but comes up.....
When it does 12GB on a 32GB device, you just have to factory reset using the option from inside the ROM.
Sent from my Nexus 5 with the N5X LRX22C ROM

OTA update Fail, Save my data

Hi ~
- Be kind with me, it's my first post! -
I'm facing a very bad problem with my Galaxy S6. A week ago I received an OTA from Samsung and I installed it. My phone rebooted and showed the bugdroid, meaning that the update was progressing. After that, the device keep rebooting over and over just after I entered my encryption password. I said to myself that I can try to wipe the cache because maybe an application was causing this problem. But now, the device is only showing the Samsung logo then just shut himself off.
Now I need your help to get my data. The hard part is that my device is encrypted. After many hour of search I see two solutions:
Flash the rom via ODIN
Install TWRP which can read encrypted volumes
The first solution seems easy and I keep the warranty. The problem is that I'm not 100% sure that flashing the rom again will not touch the /data and /sdext partitions (and the header/footer where master key are to decrypt the volume).
The second solution seems safer and should not touch any other partitions. But knox counter will be incremented and I will loose my warranty.
So, does anyone could test if flashing the rom via ODIN do not absolutely touch encrypted volumes and certificate that I will be able to get my data again?
Thank you a lot
Have a leap of faith. Go ahead and flash. Otherwise bring it to Samsung for warranty repair. They may be able to recover your data for you.

I want to be sure and I don't want to loose any photos if possible, so no
I already tried to go in a Samsung repair store (Allo PSM), but they just don't care about my data, their job is just to make the phone working again.
So Anyone is able to confirm to me that flashing stock Galaxy S6 ROM (AP Via Odin) doesn't touch the /data and /sdext partition that are encrypted?
After many hours of search, I was able to make my phone working again!
For anyone concerned by the problem in the future, here's some informations:
You can flash a stock rom, your encrypted /data will not be erased and you will be prompt to enter your password on the next boot
In my case flashing a newer rom didn't solve my problem (bootloop after entering the password of the encrypted partition). I had to flash the rom that was in the phone before the OTA.
Now everything seems to working again. No data were lost, all my configuration was saved. Android showed a message that a problem occurred during the upgrade process and I sent logs to Samsung, hoping that it will help them!

F***ed up badly, now downloading factory rom, need help to continue

Hi guys, I just registered @ xda because it looks like it's the only serious and feedback active community available. In 10 minutes I found most of the info I was looking for, but I still want to make sure what Im planning to do is fine before I mess up again. Here's the issue:
I was fooling around with the tablet and had just rooted it so I could get rid of some bloatware, and decided to go further and install cyanogen, just for the looks. So I got this thing cm-10.1-20130411-EXPERIMENTAL-p3110-M3 from the official site, which was I put on a folder inside the tablets storage (not on the 16gb SDcard it had in it). I downloaded Rom Manager and skipped through the "search and download rom" and went for the option of looking for it inside the SD card. I had the Backup options and the wipe cache and data ON.
So I proceeded and it booted, started to do the backup and at some final point it had an error, something like "could not backup Data!". I had the options of rebooting, some other stuff and the option of installing a rom from the SD Card. I went for it and searched for the .zip inside the storage, and installed it. It did it withouth trouble, and when it finishd it prompted me to install an update, which I didn't (don't know why).
Then, I went for the reeboot option and when it started I get the normal samsung's black screen with the device's name on it, but then I get a fast glitching image that sweeps through the screen and the cyanogen startup logo which gets stuck for ever.

Now Im past it, I can get to download or recovery mode, so I moved onto getting the original firmware so I can clean-install again. I got it from sammobile, chose the one belonging to Chile (that's where I got the tablet), and it's 729mb of data. The tablet is a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 P3110
If I flash it with Odin will everything be fine? All I have to do is that thing in downloadmode when I rooted it, but with that 729mb file? Should I put it in the external SD or is it more convenient to place it in the internal storage?
I appreciate your help in advance, I know this is as basic as it gets but messing up again would cost me dearly, since I have to do other stuff.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1900055 read here, all the information you will need.
It's fine to flash through odin, you will back at stock provided you don't overlook small details and do exactly like the way it is shown. Don't worry, Don't panic. Just be careful to use the files meant for your device only. Second be extra careful when you are dealing with kernel file, pit file or reparation in odin in future.
Third, get root and custom recovery, twrp.
Fourth, after your device start running take backup from twrp recovery. That will save you from most of the trouble.
Most of the details and instructions are already here

hey thanks a lot, im feeling better ow. There's just one issue left: I cant download the original firmware (it's 699mb, and the download keeps stopping midway through it). What happens if I go into clockwork recovery mode and do a factory reset? would that bring me to the original OS? Im kinda scared of downloading an erroneous file again.
EDIT: im doing a factory reset and then flashing this rom called AOSP Project Android 5.1.1 Lollipop on Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 P3110 which is a 161mb file. Will that work?

Factory reset is just clearing data and cache, if you have made changes in kernel or system, factory reset won't reset them, in your case, system has been altered so you will have to format system, then flash the new rom. If you were on jelly bean stock, you are good to flash it.

You guys have helped me a lot. I've worked everything out and now i've got to reinstalling android on it, AOSP's 5.1.1 Lollipop. It's beautiful. There's just one problem: Since it came with no apps at all, I wanted to install everything on it again. Problem is, when I go to google play, it shows that i've already got my apps installed, so it wont let me download them, and it doesn't matter if I place the APK's inside the tablet as there's no manager to open them. Even if I download apk's through the tablet's own web browser, it says it can't open the file. Any ideas on this?

All data wiped after Oxygen OS 5.1.6 update [rooted phone]

Hi,
My phone and all my personal data (4 years of photos, videos, and other app data) just got WIPED.
Here's how it happened:
* I was on OS 5.1.5 till yesterday. Had TWRP as my recovery and Magisk as my root method. Everything was hunky dory.
* Oxygen OS 5.1.6 hit my phone today. I downloaded the update and installed it. Before installing - it clearly stated that my phone will be unrooted by the update. I was ok with that, as I would have simply installed Magisk again from TWRP.
* After the reboot, I opened Magisk manager and saw that Magisk wasn't installed.
* So I did a reboot to recovery from the phone's reboot options (advanced reboot was ON in developer options)
* It did not boot to TWRP. Instead, I saw a stock recovery type screen (black background, OnePlus logo).
* There was a single text called "Decrypt" and a terminal type basic keyboard displayed on the screen.
* At this point I knew TWRP is gone and this would definitely be the stock recovery, asking me for my PIN, to decrypt storage.
* I entered my PIN and pressed ok. IMMEDIATELY after that the screen displayed the message - "Wiping" along with "do not turn off your device while this happens" or similar.
* I was shocked to see this, as all I had done was enter my PIN in a stock-looking recovery with the OnePlus logo.
* The phone rebooted, and lo and behold - I see the new installation screen saying "Hello" to me!
ALL MY DATA IS GONE. Without any fault of mine! I simply did an OS update, and boot to recovery!
PLEASE HELP!
So you went 4 years without doing a backup? I think your out of luck.
First, I am pretty sure all your data is gone absent some expensive recovery.
Second, when you took the ota, you went back to stock, which is why twrp and magisk disappeared. This is actually how the system is supposed to work.
I don't know what you did in the stock recovery to cause a wipe. You should have rebooted to bootloader and reinstalled twrp from fastboot.

This is exactly where it's just crazy wrong. It just booted up to a recovery, with a screen saying "Decrypt" and a keyboard! NO mention of the next step being "Wiping".. ! This is just plain crazy, if that's how its designed!

pretty much. was just migrating data from one phone to the next using titanium backup/restore.
How could 4 years of photos and vids be gone? The phone is only weeks old. Surely you have backed these up to a cloud or even a pc at some stage? If you habe data backup turned on, you should have all your apps ready to reinstall.
You should have booted into bootloader, flashed twrp and magisk after the update. The OTA will always resort any custom recovery to stock.

I just kept migrating it from the previous phones to the next phones. Google photos does have backup of photos and videos. But there was so much more: SMS, call logs, whatsapp photos (the ones which were unlinked due to being moved to SD card earlier), screenshots, voice recordings, telegram images/videos, google authenticator tokens, and many apps whose data doesn't get backed up as part of android/google backup.

You have a rooted device with a custom recovery so how did you install those in the first place and not loose data then? That wipes your phone doing that. It wiped again because it was being unlocked and relocked that always wipes it. Don't claim this is no fault of your own your running a modified device so yes it is your fault don't come on here and play victim it's really annoying

Surely you have those titanium backup files though still right? Just restore from that, sure you may lose a week or two but it's better than 4 years.

Android is supposed to wipe data only on unlocking the device. Once it's unlocked there's no reason Android should automatically wipe data.
It did not get relocked. It is still unlocked. How did you come to that conclusion?
Also, I root my device ONLY to install TitaniumBackup and Helium. I do not meddle with anything else being root (no ROMs, tweaks, etc.). Is it my fault that Android STILL doesn't have a way to backup everything without having to root your phone and install special backup apps?
How can the OS just wipe the data partition without user consent? With NO message displayed whatsoever. Just ask a password go on "Wiping.. please wait". What the hell.

Yes I could recover some data from the SD card of my previous phone. Not the TB backups though.
I really need a way to (a) image the phone so that I can possibly recover/pay for recovery in the future (b) recover the data from the phone
I did a little reading. Apparently forced encryption is something that Android Oreo comes along with. All the data files are now by default encrypted (at a file level not a partition level). It is apparently encrypted with some randomly generated encryption key decided by Android, and not the PIN you have set to lock the phone. The PIN is just associated with that key. I'm pretty sure that key got deleted as well when the device was wiped (I'm assuming it must have been implemented like that as a security measure). So I have a wiped data partition with encrypted files!

It did have consent when you took the OTA with your modded device and it said decrypt and asked for your password it was about to wipe. Again you modded your phone and didn't keep a back up this is no one's fault but yours
Yeah I always back up my messages, photos, etc.. To a PC before any type of flash or update, I use smsbackup and have it uploaded to Google drive also titanuim backup and move the files to PC and just back ur DCIM folder. Sorry for ur luck but we all learn lessons the hard way, and no u Cannot recover, but if u have ur old phone may still have the texts on them and use oneplus switch to move them over
I guarantee this post is from a troll, nobody is dumb enough to do any or all of the idiotic things the OP claims.
Got the (important parts) of my data back. It only wiped the "data" partition - which contained internal app data and sms/calls, etc. It did not wipe the "sdcard" partition (also called "internal storage"). Found this out when I was installing TWRP again (before going through the OS welcome process) to create a dd image of my device for possibility of a future recovery. Android file transfer (thanks to TWRP's MTP support) popped up and showed all my files on the sdcard partition. Immediately backed it up.
To all those senior members who're making fun of this, thanks for all the help, really. You guys were really helpful.

I think this is impossible.. First the phone didn't return to me the root message before updating like oneplus 5 and second point, if you enter the pin to decrypt your data in recovery it never do an automatic wipe i'm a bit confused on what you've really done, but for sure you did something wrong because updating system had never wiped anything

Well this is completely possible, I just had the same thing happened to me. It was exactly as OP described it (except it was OOS 5.1.7, and it did not even ask me to input a pin when I rebooted to recovery). Fortunately I had a backup, so it didn't impact me much but still, it is a very weird thing.

Thanks for being sarcastic about being helpful. Sorry we can't hold your hand and fix all your problems because your not responsible for your own actions of modding your phone and can't take the consequences when they arise. Maybe you should learn how some more things work and what can happen when you do this before you do it and don't backup your device ever

Question Soft Bricked on restart

I'd rooted my device and reflashed it with a different stock image and now it's bricked. If I factory reset, I can use most applications without issue; when I restart the phone the system apps stop working, I cannot navigate the launcher and I'm stuck with a "Pixel is starting" loading bar forever. I believe the stock apps are replaced upon restart which is causing this but I am not sure. The IMEI number was also erased, it's only 0s. So far I've flashed custom roms, stock images, and older versions to each slot but it doesn't help. Does anyone have suggestions on how to fix this phone?

I would suggest Android Flash Tool? If you do, I would suggest selecting "Force Flash Partitions". Be forewarned that this will wipe your phone.

I've tried forcing flash partitions but that still does not resolve the issue.

Well, if that doesn't work I'm not sure what will. Maybe try flashing the factory image to both slots with Pixel Flasher, if you haven't already. But if Android Flash Tool doesn't work, I'm not sure Pixel Flasher will either.
Have you tried loading safe mode, on whatever rom you're on?
Update: I think this was caused by the Android 13's anti rollback feature. The IMEI is all zeroed and I read others experienced this as well, being apart of the anti-rollback brick. If someone has a solution to this please reply. The symptoms I'm experiencing are bugs with apps crashing (web-kit malfunctioning), Zero'd IMEI, when the device restarts it is looped on "Pixel is starting". I have to go to settings and factory reset each time it loops on that.
