Question OnePlus 9 touch issue - OnePlus 9

My OP9 is perfect apart from 1 thing. When scrolling, I keep my finger on the screen when I stop. When I resume scrolling after a second of the finger being still, there is a slight delay in responsiveness of the screen which resolves within a second. The bug does not occur in any other scenario.
I've figured out what the issue is using this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rt.touchmultitest
The touch sampling rate drops to around 50Hz when the finger is stationary on the screen, and doesn't reset to 240Hz fast enough when you start moving again...
Can anyone please test it to confirm?
TLDR: Touch sampling rate idles when finger doesn't move/moves a little.

Ive noticed issues but it was resolved when i removed the OEM screen protector that's preinstalled on the phone.
I also had to get a new OP9 (unrelated to removing said OEM screen protector) and I am now just dealing with the responsiveness issues until it starts losing its flush application to the screen and starts peeling.
Just a guess but people not realizing its there or just forgetting due to it being so easy to forget is a major reason they report touch responsiveness issues (happen to me when I first got the OP9 AND 6)
Maybe thats it?

It could be the screen protector, although I doubt it... It seems to occur in a very specific situation, almost like it's there intentionally.
Could you please replicate these steps:
1. Scroll on a website/text
2. Stop scrolling and keep your finger on the screen (important)
3. After a second of the finger being still, resume scrolling with a fast gesture (without moving the finger off the screen) and see if the screen follows with appropriate speed.
In my case, there is a noticable delay at first but it resolves after moving the finger for a while.

Can anyone please check if their phone behaves like this? Thanks a lot!

I have the exact same issue.

i have the same issue too

Nope , tried recreating, no issue here .
p.s. not using seen protectors .

Hey OP. I am on the Paranoid Android Alpha ROM and believe this will correct your issue. Its touch responsiveness feels completely different from stock for me and no longer have any issues.
If you are comfortable with any of that, maybe give it a try.

i cant find the article, but its a bug that was introduced by google even to the pixel lineup in android last year or year before. The same thing happens on the One Plus Nord N200. Its annoying. I beleive google fixed it but doesnt seem like one plus has fixed it or carried the fix from the google tree. In android 11 google also introduced touch sensitivity but seems like one plus removed it in their final release ROM/FIRMWARE https://www.xda-developers.com/google-pixel-4-new-increased-touch-sensitivity-option-android-11/

[Q] Touchscreen problem: "Phantom" touches

There are lots of videos showing this problem: after you have touched the screen sometimes the screen registers finger presses even after you've removed them.
It's very hard to see what is going on if you don't turn on "show touches" in settings, so I suspect many reports about touch screens being unresponsive, or acting strangely is really the same problem.
It occurs both in stock ROMs and aosp, but subjectively more often in stock roms. It's not about moisture remaining, I've wiped the screen completely clean and dry and the phantom touches are there before, during and after cleaning.
Is there a software solution to this or is it hardware? Any thoughts of how this problem could be approached? I'm having trouble even reproducing it reliably.
yet another video of the odd problem: https://www.dropbox.com/s/mglol5qon6vy67g/2013-08-11 20.15.01.mp4
I replaced my Asus TF300 because of a similar issue. Asus fixed it once under warranty (replaced the entire LCD and digitizer, I think) but the issue came right back within a few months after RMA. By then the warranty had expired. In my case, the ghost touches were prevalent in a specific part of the screen; couldn't tell from your video whether the false touches were in the same general area every time or not.
Surprisingly, until the problem became so bad that an entire area was unusable, I could flash a new ROM and get somewhat different behavior. Just to be sure, though, I did flash a stock ROM prior to sending back to Asus and verified the issue existed there, labeled the area with tape so they could not miss it, and described in details the steps to reproduce.
Good luck.

This is my experience also, the aosp revolt rom, seems to suffer much less so than the stock roms.
It does seem to be the same area but it might be just because it's the side that is used most often for scrolling due to me being right handed.
The difference between how the roms behave is what make me suspect it's a software issue.
Just to be clear, you've not noticed this even once with your note? Before I turned on the "show touches" I saw it most clearly when I used chrome or other programs with scrollable elements. The page would sometimes just vibrate a little when left alone.

No, my note has been rock solid, but I haven't enabled show touches so I can't say for sure.

I'm thinking it might be possible to alter the idc file that specifies the behaviour of the touchscreen (https://source.android.com/devices/tech/input/input-device-configuration-files.html). But it's all a bit over my head.

The guy in the video did a great job with research. Did you catch the part where he found nearly imperceptible damage to the screen that was a possible cause? The ghosting always seems to occur in the same places because that's where the screen has been "crushed". Now "crushed" is a bad word because the screen probably hasn't been compressed beyond an acceptable level but there might be some correlation between where the users normally places his/her hand when using the pen and where the phantom touches occur. Maybe when writing, some users are baring-down harder than they realize and prolonged pressure in the same arc-shaped area created by the side of a hand, causes some changes in the capacitive properties in that area which cause a "latch" condition -- where the digitizer gets stuck and won't unstick until power is removed.
I've noticed in the videos that I've seen that the presenter get the problem to appear when using the side of their hand in a rolling fashion -- probably the same motion that they use when they just start to write. I also believe that devices that have this problem "get better" or less sensitive when not used for a while. This would follow the idea that the screen is compressed and given some time, the compression relaxes.
If the problem is limited to a certain area of the screen, I find it hard to believe that the problem could possibly have anything to do with ROM or firmware. The matrix of the digitizer in X-Y coordinates is addressed such that if there were a problem like this, the error would occur and repeat in either a straight vertical or horizontal direction instead of finite points spanning many rows and columns.
I guess one way of ruling this idea out would be to find someone who has never used the pen to write yet still has the problem.
I haven't ruled out that it is hardware related, but I have noted a significant improvement leaving stock ROMs for aosp. Maybe that's just a coincidence, I can't know for sure. I have noted something else that might help diagnose this problem.
If the period of turning on the screen, using the tablet then turning off the screen constitutes one session, there are two types of sessions. Sessions which suffer from this problem, which will be apparent in a relative short period of time. But there are also sessions where everything works as it should, regardless of how long the session is. So you will notice this problem within 10 min or not at all.

Touchscreen sensitivity issue

Hi there guys,
I've been researching on this problem i've got with my Oneplus. It seems that the touchscreen is'nt responsive enough.
Often when i'm scrolling trough (for example) facebook, the phone has a hard time recognizing my swipes, and picks up regular touches instead. Which is causing me to open or like posts when i'm just trying to scroll trough. If i'm scrolling trough my homescreens while just slightly touching the screen, it acts up really hard.
The screen just isn't responsive enough imo.
I'm wondering if other people got the same issue, and if it is hardware or software related.

I hope this can be fixed with a software update.

Hmm, maybe you just got used to press a bit harder onto the screen (which helps). Would be great if it's really disapearing after a while
Got mine for 3 days now.

I have the exact same issue with my OnePlus after 3 weeks of use. At first it was the swype issue where the phone wasn't picking up swypes properly on the middle left side of my screen. I use a pattern unlock so it's annoying when the dots don't connect.
The next thing was not picking up my touches properly so when ever I use SwiftKey and they recommend words, I could never properly select it because the touchscreen wasn't registering properly.
I did a factory reset and it solved the problem at first but it's now back after 2 days. It's not as bad as before but still persistent. There are tons of people on Redit, Cyanogen and the OnePlus forums that are reporting the same problem.
The good news is it seems like a software and not hardware issue, hopefully the permanent fix can come soon.
Possible solution to the supposed OnePlus One touch sensitivity problem
Settings→Developer Options→ Scroll About Half Way and UNcheck "block gesture touch events"
Also try and see if unchecking "Adaptive backlight" in Settings→Display & lights→ Adaptive backlight, helps.
Of course none of these are permanent solutions. And this problem is real. But maybe the "solutions" above help.
ive not had these issues just yet. but i do get annoyed by gesture control
This still needs to be addressed. It's almost as bad as an old capacitive touch screen!
I got my phone maybe a month after it was released. After exactly 4 months the touchscreen input died and lost all sensitivity. Typing became impossible. After going back and fourth with support for 2 months they finally sent me another one. The new one was excellent for EXACTLY FOUR MONTHS!! Almost to the DAY! My damn touch is broken again and I can't type. I'm furious! I'm also 1wk outside warranty.
With the first phone I tried every hack, crack, rom, reformat, anything I could find. Nothing would restore the touch. I assume it's a hardware issue. I've been looking around for a solution but haven't found anything. If there is anything, I would appreciate some direction.
Sorry for everyone that ever wasted their money on OnePlus, I won't be getting any more products from them...

Possibly. Mine had a very slight issue like this when the phone got warm, but that is mainly for people with the TRUE ghost touch. That means you swipe and sometimes it swipes lazy whrn scrolling because it didn't catch the entire swipe, typing on the keyboard is terrible because it "touched" a different letter, and using an app to test the multitouch registers less than 10 fingers, or even putting a few fingers on the screen causes it to touch elsewhere or not detect a touch. I had a OnePlus One like this when they were still being sold and it was terrible. Then there was a nightly CyanogenMod build that fixed the problem but would drain battery about twice as fast.
Currently, we have custom roms that have updated drivers which vastly improve the screen performance on the ones that had very little issues. Me for example after flashing DotOS I no longer get the very slight issues. My issue mainly occured when swiping, where it would require a swipe perfectly straight up or down instead of the normal way we swipe with our thumbs which is usually slightly tilted. It wasn't something to ruin the experience for me, but sometimes unlocking my phone with the pattern was difficult because of this. There was another rom out there that specifically outlined that it had many updated drivers including the Synaptics drivers (touch), but I cannot recall the name.

my oneplus one was fine bro, I used every custom rom and it worked very well! but in the last month it start happening this ghost touch problem
and I'm sure its 100% hardware, even on TWRP it happens

8.11.29 open beta impressions

update 2 : i posted a video on youtube for the lowered sensitivity of pocophone f1 8.11.29 and compared it to note 9 touch to settle the debate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cALkjau09xs
update : about the touch there seem to be a debate whether it is improved or not .. i just did a reset and discovered that by default the google keyboard has no borders and full gesture is not enabled .. so if you set the theme of the gboard to enable key borders and enabled full screen gesture you will definitely feel the lower edge space bar problems and that allover sensitivity is lowered
thought to write my initial impressions about 8.11.29 open beta software .. it was released couple of hours ago and i updated from 8.11.15 with ota and no reset done
hdr still works in youtube
youtube full screen support is there
hevc 4k60 10 bit files now works flawlessly on mi video app
camera noise during low light conditions improved but on the expense of details as there is some kind of photo softness introduced
there is a small bug too which is still there google keyboard key-presses sound is mute every restart and you have to turn it off and on again to enable
PUBG touch is fixed
my analysis for the touch :
1st they reduced touch sensitivity a bit and i think this was done as some people complained from over-sensitivity with cables touching screen and stuff .. the problem i see this is normal and it didn't deserve to lower sensitivity for as this is how touch works .. the flow of electric charge from your hand pass through the cable and reach the screen
2nd ghost multitouch issue is there but i only tested with multitouch tester and i didnt notice it while working on the mobile
3rd now if i put the mobile on the chair hand and do not catch it with my hand 95% of touches are not registered which proves they lowered sensitivity ( the percentage may differ with mobile position grounding and battery level and charging or not )
4th the edges touch is less sensitive specially the lower part and space bar in addition to their lag so the keyboard is not usable now and will give you lots of space bar mistakes .. i think this is because of the lowered sensitivity all over the screen in addition to crippled edges touch from the start (using full screen gestures)
5th this is complicated it is how the PUBG was fixed : there was a user here on xda and miui that complained of particular touch issue were small turns were laggy and not registered .. this was completely fixed and PUBG plays excellent now
so to sum this up apparently edges have some sort of hardware problem and it will not be better than 8.11.15 so they should return sensitivity to 8.11.15 level so keyboard is usable again and keep the PUBG fix .. i think this will be the best partial fix for touch issues .. as by now i am convinced that they dont have a 100 % fix .. i was surprised they even fixed PUBG but who knows .. so now keyboard is in an unusable state if you turn on fullscreen gestures and cancelled the homescreen buttons .. so temporarily solutions till fix #1 you need to turn on the home buttons bar and wait for a fix or #2 disable keyboard borders in gboard theme and enable fullscreen gestures
i will add edit this post later and add rest of my impressions to this post as i test the phone
please share yours .. also do you see that i need to reset the phone before assessing the update ?!
Touch issue is still present, but different.
It is less than before, however now I notice it mostly on the spacebar. (In fullscreen mode)
While typing, it sometimes doesn't register me pressing the spacebar entirely. Does someone has the the same feeling about this?

yes i was testing the touch this last hour and i agree with you about the space bar and i will tell you my anaylsis
but as a starter and to cheer people up PUBG turn touch lag is fixed and now small turns are registered without a lag
so again PUBG touch fixed

Agreed, however the screen now flickers a lot and the user experience is very poor due to this.
I never had any touch issues and even now it's fine.

Wait, what? xD
The wiring of cables are always covered with an insulator which restricts the flow of electrons on the outer surface, so it's definitely the over-sensitivity which is the devil here.
This issue is not present in custom ROMs as the devs have managed to implement the fix from 8.11.15 and 8.11.23.

i changed electrons to electric charge to be precise .. also i have acer iconia w700 tablet that register touches from cables .. also my note 5 do this .. there is nothing called over-sensitivity except when it affects things or cause a malfunction .. if over-sensitivity was present i never felt a malfunction from it and pubg game touch issues was not related to over-sensitivity at all and there was a complete topic here taking about this specific poblem
on the other side almost all ppl complain from touch problems and screen edges that do not register touches as center .. so you take a decision to lower sensitivity ????!!!!! thats weird and i cannot comprehend till now
do you know that if i used the side of my finger vs the tip touch differs .. so there is difference between ppl and you cannot go lower sensitivity on a phone ppl complaining about its touch issues
also dont forget the screen protector that has its toll on touch sensitivity .. all these factors must be considered

Ahhhhh! I get it now!
But my verdict is that Xiaomi released this phone with just pure excitement and nothing else. They did not optimize the phone for users' convenience. This is a beta phone and they'll PROBABLY hit the right note with the successor of this phone. And worst part, we've surrendered ourselves as 'testers' for this phone. :/

I had done the multi touch test when I bought this smartphone and it registered all the 10 touches easily in the first go. Now, after this update it won't even register 5 touches without trying repeatedly.
I also noticed unresponsive touch problem with .23 and .29 beta updates. I didn't have this touch problem with .15 beta and below. Also, the lock screen flickers on .29. Most probably due to auto brightness I think. While using facelock, the screen brightness changes like crazy. Tried .29 with global beta, EU rom and globe rom, and with franko kernel. The screen flickers like super fast brightness change from low to high to low continuously with all.
Reverted back to .15 now, and touch is good now. And also no screen flickering.

I installed the full rom- 1.7gb and the flicker is gone from lockscreen.

I think getting a new screen/touch replacement is the best way to fix touch issues.

Just like what I said in the title, I'm about to get a new screen replacement as I heard newer batches don't have any touch related issues. I'm a hardcore gamer and I think touch is very important for me when playing games.
Already 3 months and 'software fixes' regarding touches is not working great.
My phone is from september batch and running 8.12.27 beta and facing touch lags around edges.
Clean flashed 8.12.20 now more multi touches issues under notch.
Is there anyone else who already got a screen replacement?
Any issues like screen bleed/touch delay/multi touch and so on?

Yes
I also have the same problem but I'm on the stable Pie version of the ROM.
I still havent found any problem though. My screen does have a lil bit light bleed. Still,no touch issue yet.
buy a switch or something, you can consider yourself as ''hardcore gamer'' if you play un phone xD
I'm also facing touch lag around the edges.
The screen center is lag free though. Latest stable Pie didn't improve anything. I also have a little bit of screen bleeding around the notch.
Does the warranty cover this?

How about doing 'qi'test and see if it outputs iq on your Poco.
What ROM you using?
Any multi touch issues when playing tap intensive games like drums or MOBAs?
I think you might be wasting time because I'm pretty sure I've seen someone here or on Reddit say that they had their screen replaced and it did not fix the touch issue for them. Keep in mind after replacement that any of the beta releases from 8.11.23 on (except for the 8.12.27 update) have a new kernel which fixes the delay on the right and left edge and improves scrolling. So if you wish to test if the replaced screen did fix anything, use the stable ROM or the .27 beta to check that.
I must be one of the ones without the screen issue then.
Lel
What exactly is the touch issue?
I Got Armoured edition 128GB delivered yesterday itself. Updated it to MIUI 10.1.3.0 PIE and i am facing no issues as of now. No screen bleeding and no touch Issues.
I would like too to know how to detect those display issues.

Ofcourse I'll use the Stable ROM to get a new screen instead using beta.
I can replicate those touch issues on Stable i.e touch delay on edges.
It'll be useless to ask for a screen replacement using a beta just to find out all the store did was just change it from Beta to Stable to 'fix' the touch issue lol.

If you're on Stable pie, type 'qi' fast and most Pocos will output 'iq' even though pressed q first then i. This is touch delay issue.
If you're on 8.12.20 beta, theres screen freezes and multi touches under the notch if you tap and slide 2 finggers at the same button with a bit of force for it to occur. Screen freeeezes also happens where you cannot register ANY touches on the screen until you lock and unlock your phone

Well, I'm still not sure. Sometimes, I will do it quickly and output is "qi" but sometimes I do it quickly, output is "iq" but I'm not sure if I pressed "q" or "i" first, because of the speed. It's there any other way to prove it?
And if it have lags, who can feel those? Because I definitively not.

'q' then 'i' super fast and make sure you know what you are pressing first.
Or you can try 'p' then 'e' quickly see if it comes as 'pe' or 'ep'
Every Poco have it. Forget about it and wait for the fix or just change to another device. If you're really hardcore, I'm assuming you a PUBG gamer, you should know that gyroscopic is the best way to aim on the game and the touch issue means nothing.
I can confirm by testing it, that switching from 8.12.27 to 8.12.10 touchscreen fw the delay is improved. At least, according to the maximum speed that I can type, performing the simple test of typing q and afterwards g or q and afterwards i, with the 8.12.10 is always printing on the screen the right order of the letters I ve typed, thus qg/qi, but on 8.12.27 always the outcome was gq/iq. My device is made on Oct.2018.

Oh that's interesting. Some people here claim that newer batches don't have the touch problem yet you seem to have the exact same issue as my unit which was assembled in July 2018. Full four months and the issue still there... That is why I don't believe there are Poco users who don't have this problem.

I just don't know.
It's just that maybe some units aren't affected.
I heard some random guy in the Poco reddit got a pocophone around September and bought another Poco for her little brother 2 months after that and what happened is his poco has touch issues while his little brother's doesn't have any.
That's why I thought I'm gonna get a new screen replacement
