Aurora store is cool
Guess most users and developers still like to use Google? The best thing about Android is that you have multiple choices.
Feels like we don't have multiple choices the way location and tap to pay don't work. Just wish we had root at least.

I bought the nexus 6 today and hate the google bloatware more than any other bloatware. When Samsung or Sony or insertcompanyhere has bloatware on their phones it makes people angry. Why do these companies continue to pump resources into developing **** no one wants to use or deal with? I don't know, and I don't believe they know either. No one makes me as angry as google in this game though, because I can't shake the feeling that they should just know better. Almost all of googles preinstalled apps can not be removed. Why? Every other app requires me to have interest, download it, use it, and then uninstall it when I lose interest. Why does google think their apps are an exception, so much so that they design android software to break if you try to remove their garbage? Can someone, anyone, link me a resource that can show me how to get rid of every google app from my phone? I don't want it disabled, I want it obliterated from my cell phone. Google +, Google Maps, Google Hangouts, Google everything but the market. Can this be done? If the baby has to be thrown out with the bathwater, what rom will give me stock android with google play ONLY, and how do I install it. And can anyone explain to me why google is so scared of their apps not being used that they consistently shove it down the throats of humanity with such violent, unrelenting force? Why can they not have all of their apps that lots of people use available for download on the market, and sell the nexus 6 with nothing but the market, giving everyone the OPTION to download their applications, and the OPTION to uninstall it when they are done, or not install it to begin with? I pray for that day to come!

Let me see. Your using a Google OS on a Google device. All you need is root to remove these apps. If you search will find a project that is android without Google, but mind you that without Google's services you will lose alot of the abilities of the OS
Hi there!
I'm currently setting up a few Phones running CM 13 for my colleagues at work.
Now I'm not sure in which way this is managed best.
We don't use Google in any way at work so one Google Account for the Play Store would be enough.
These are the advantages I see in this:
- I only need to pay for payed apps once
- If I don't store the password on the phone nobody should be able to install anything unwanted. I could do installations by using the playstore website and push installations from there if neccessairy.
- Well and then theres no need to start many google accounts, remember passwords etc. I just seems easier.
- Better control over whats going on with these phones.
However I'm not sure if it is doable the way I think it should work.
Has anybody any experience with a setup like this? Help would be much appreciated.
In Android 6 it's also possible to set up multiple user accounts but I don't think that it supports "normal users" or "administrators". This would be a good thing.
Thanks for any hints on this!

We see nowadays all MIUI global ROMs are coming with Google dialer and Google messages apps, I am actually not sure why this is happening there must be some reason behind it. I pressure google is trying to incorporate the chat functionality within the messaging app similar to Whatsapp/ Telegram. But I don't see that is working as of now in the Google message app, it is still looking for a working MMS option that involves additional cost. So there is no point using this at this moment.
Due to this reason, many people are moving to EU ROMs as they are maintaining MIUI dialer and message apps which are more comfortable and reliable integration with MIUI themes. Everyone may not be technical enough to move to EU ROMs easily. So all put together join your hands and let Xiami know the fact that people are looking for MIUI dialer/Messages in all upcoming ROMs.
I like as little bloat as possible on my phone, so Google apps all the way. Hell I wish all phones were in the Android One program, or at least there were more contemporary Android One options.

Google now wants to kill the .apk, and turn all Android applications into Play Store "bundles", even asking developers to hand over the signing keys.
Google Play dumps APKs for the more Google-controlled “Android App Bundle”
Starting in August, new apps will need to turn over their signing keys to Google.

That's something I would pay to NOT have.
Now, THAT would be a very big difference between Silver and XDA versions. I hope there'll always be an independent, Google-free MiX over here, signed by Hootan only.

I don't know whether to [complain bitterly; original word choice asterisked out] about Google or ArsTechnica: Google will "allow" a developer to retain a copy of the private key that the developer uploaded to Google?
Is there really no hope that developers will tell Google to pound sand?

Ars also keeps track of projects Google kills and mocks them for it aaaall the time, to be fair.
No one prevents developers from making single APKs at present, but maintaining two versions, one for Play, one outside, is already giving them more work.
For some it may be worth it. For others, they're probably going to stick to the "rules" and give it all up.
Google might eventually just prevent Android from using "old" APK formats. But that'd be years away at any rate. Thank Android's glacial update pace. ( Compared to other OSes, such a big chunk of users of Android is on older versions, that it's not realistic to impose drastic changes such as this. )
Then again, Google changes its mind about things all the time. We'll see how this plays out. Horrible pun intended. I don't think any developer can take Google seriously about anything at this point.
( Personally I just use XDA, GitHub and F-Droid. No Play, no Google services, applications, or anything. And have for years now. Hope it doesn't affect us Google-free-freaks too much. )

My idea of telling Google to pound sand is to refuse to deal with this app bundle crap. In an ideal world, Google would be left with no apps worth having.
No, I'm not holding my breath.

I wish the Android Open Source Project had real teeth. I think that would solve all issues.
And then Google, or Samsung, or any other company, same as they do with Linux, could build whatever services they wish on top and profit, kill, steal, whatever it is they do. But users could have a choice not to be used themselves -- or be, if they don't care, and developers as well not to be treated as they are today. I mean, Play takes a 30% cut from your profit, tells you what you can do and how, and now your signing keys, too, please ? What the hell.
Unfortunately other than Lineage and their builds, nowadays, there is no other option when it comes to a functional Android other than Google's version of it.
AOSP is barely a skeleton. Google has been slowly killing it, removing more and more from it, or rather, moving functionality to their own services. Location for instance was long ago part of AOSP, and then they moved it to their proprietary bits. Same with everything else.
Why Google Play's APK replacement is scaring some security experts
Google Play will soon force developers to upload App Bundles instead of APKs, raising uncomfortable security questions about the requirement.

Hi,
First sorry for this vague post. I am on Android since 2012. During 2012-2014 I used to try out lots of custom ROMs as I was in college and I had mobile like Samsung Galaxy S3 and then later Nexus and the OEM abandoned the updates after a while. After that I started working and since then have been on multiple Google line of devices, first Nexus and now my latest is Pixel3. I am generally happy with the phone. However, my Pixel3 stopped receiving updates I started thinking why I should dump this and buy a new one when it's perfectly working fine for my need.
I just came to this site after like ages to see what is the current status of custom ROMs. It seems overwhelmingly new now. I remember back then we had some sharp edges and something or other didn't work. Since then I am more into google ecosystem now. I use google Fi for phone. I like and use most of the google feature. So just wondering what will I lose by moving to custom ROM and am I ready to live without those features or should I just accept that I will not have any updates and if I need the updates I will have to buy a new phone.
I am not much interested into rooting and gaining advanced controls or doing anything extra nerdy. I will be perfectly happy with just getting the security patches and whatever feature is there if they keep working.
1. what are some good custom ROMs popular these days?
2. What are the things I'd lose moving to custom ROM?
3. Does all hardware for ex: Finger print, NFC work?
4. What about google apps, I mostly like all google app like camera, google pay, phone, play store
5. I like the google specific features like call screening and google assistance, google feed. I guess I will lose those.
6. I also use google Fi, can I still use that seamlessly or is there any gotchas I need to be aware of?
7. Is there any other way to keep my phone Googlized and receive security updates. It is totally acceptable if I can get security patches after some delay and not via OTP but have to sideload manually.

1. LineageOS
2. I have not found anything lost.
3. Yes
4. You can download the Google Camera app from the play store. Probably the phone app also, but I have not tried it. Google Pay will require rooting and Universal SafetyNet Fix module.
5. Don't know, as I don't use them.
6. I don't use Fi, but would expect it to work.
7. I'm not aware of any other way, but have not looked. Lineage does everything I need.
