THE ORIGIN OF THE ISSUE:
Everything began 1 month ago. I was using my Nexus 5 like I always did. I had my WiFi turned on because I was chatting with my friends on Instagram and I left my smartphone charging. There were notifications and the notification light turned on showing me that I had two texts from Instagram app. When I tried to turn it on the screen, I pressed the power button, but the screen did not turn on. I pressed the power button again and again and again, but still the same. I tried to force-reboot my device and that's what I did. When the screen started again, my WiFi was stuck at "turning WiFi on...", also, my Bluetooth was not working properly too, because when I tried to turn it on, it automatically turned back off.
ATTEMPT TO FIX #1:
First thing I tried was unrooting and reinstalling stock using Nexus Root Toolkit. That didn't work... I tried doing a simple factory reset from the phone settings, also didn't work...
After those fails, I noticed that my MAC address was corrupted, showing this: 02:00:00:00:00:00 so I searched the Internet for stuff related to this MAC address error and found people with similar problem just like mine. I found solutions like deleting /persist/wifi folder (my friend did not recommended me to do so after I did this). So, I did the thing, AND IT DID NOT HELP. Tried returning to stock using Nexus Root Toolkit AND IT DID NOT HELP. I had an idea to delete my entire system using TWRP and I thought that reinstalling it would fix the problem. But I was noob at the moment, didn't know how to flash after deleting it. Anyway, I went on, and deleted system, but I didn't know how to reinstall and I was without a smartphone for 3 weeks. I was sooooooooo sad cause this was the worst issue I had to deal with... No smartphone... No WiFi.... life sucks (still does, I am sooo depressed for a stupid smartphone)... Well, obviously, NOTHING HELPED.
ATTEMPT TO FIX #2:
After those 3 weeks, I finally managed to find a way to reinstall OS on my smartphone again (using Nexus 5 factory image found in Google site for developers). I was sooo happy because at least I managed to turn the smartphone back on. So, step two was to check if WiFi worked. Well... not as I expected things to be. It didn't work... Obviously... Well, after doing simple experiments, I tried to do "the thing again". After deleting file .macaddr from /persist/wifi folder, without deleting the folder, only the file, WiFi turned back on!!! I went in tears thanking God. Sooooo much happiness!!! I desided to insert WiFi APs that I prevously saved in a wpa_supplicant.conf file, and guess what.... I F***** UP WIFI AND SENSORS!!! I was sooooo mad!
ATTEMPT TO FIX #3:
Well, the next day, I attempted to do a system delete again, but this time, I used another computer device, my family laptop. I deleted system, and this time, I didn't flash anything using Nexus Root Toolkit, but I used this Nexus 5 factory image again. WIFI WAS BACK ON!!! YEESSS!!! I was crying soooo hard!! I again thanked God!!! But it didn't last long... After two days, I turned on my WiFi to check my messages from Instagram, sadly, my WiFi was again stuck on "turning WiFi on..." and my smartphone rebooted by itself (again). So... guess what. I DEAR YOU TO GUESS WHAT HAPPENED NEXT!!! MAC address was back to this STUPID 02:00:00:00:00:00. I had enouch. I installed Termux, I installed a packet called "macchanger" and tried to change my MAC address to something random. I used command "macchanger -r wlan0" and I rebooted. This changed my MAC address to something random. Now, WiFi turns on and when I open an application to use WiFi with, it turns off immediatelly... Also, my MAC address is on changing again with command "macchanger -r wlan0" and is stuck in the previous randomized MAC address. Using "macchanger" command, I also noticed that my "permanent" MAC address is now: 00:00:00:00:00:00 (something that was never valid).
WHAT DO I DO?
DO I NEED TO BUY A NEW SMARTPHONE BECAUSE THIS ONE IS PRETTY F***** UP?

Any chance you made a backup, especially a backup from the efs partition?

What is EFS? What backup do I do. Cause, I'm a noob and all, and I am not the type of a developer... But, I guess I am able to do a backup using root. But how will this work? How will this help the situation. Could you explain to me friend? (If you are willing to do so of course)

EFS stands for Encrypted File System. […]
It contains your IMEI, lots of files revolving around your SIM card and Wifi/Bluetooth (this includes your MAC address for all the radios of your phone), and lots of other things that should never ever under any circumstance be deleted or touched. […]
If you lose your EFS folder, you lose pretty much any chance of your phone being able to use data, Wifi, Bluetooth […].

If you had done a backup (e.g. via twrp) prior to rooting you might have also done a backup of that efs partition.
And if you had a backup you could restore that partition. Don't know if you somehow managed to mess this partition up (or if its related at all in your case. Someone with more knowledge hopefully sees your thread) but if you did, there would be no point in backing up that partition now (if its damaged, there is no use to backup a damaged partiton to restore it afterwards).
You can ask me everything you want, don't worry. But I don't know if I'll be able to explain it.
You could try to follow above mentioned guide. If it works, please upvote that guide so others find that helpfull content too.

I did not mess with any partitions. I do not like to mess with my system. I never did. I always made a backup if I had to do something with the system. Before the incident, I never EVER messed with the system. I only started some experiments after the thing happened. I first deleted the whole content of /persist folder (which I restored, because I had a backup), then I deleted .macaddr file inside /persist/wifi folder which actually turned on my WiFi access again, only to f*** things up after doing something stupid, which is to replace wpa_supplicant.conf file inside the /data/misc/wifi folder with one I had with my previously saved WiFi Access Points and their passwords, which resulted to the corrupted MAC address again (02:00:00:00:00:00). No, my WiFi can be scanned successfuly and I am able to connect to it, but still, it does not work properly, because when it connects, it automatically disconnects when I try to use apps like Chrome and Instagram and other apps that need Internet to use. I am currently deleting and re-installing my Factory Image and this will be the last time...

Another thing which would be helpful:
If your problem is still present you might want to have a look at the logs. That way it's easier to see what causes this behavior.
Code:
adb logcat > log.txt
Run this and try to reproduce the error.
Don't worry about messing with anything. We don't know what happened and sometimes the best of us do things they shouldn't do.
And it seems that also other things (like installing a custom OS) messed with partitions somehow.
But yes, doing a backup prior to modifing is extremly wise – keep up that habit!

I saw this thread before. I did not try to flash other OS than the one I use now. I was also thinking downgrading to Android 5.1.1 (because I am currently using 6.0.1 with MOB30H build) and I might try some time.
BTW there is another problem now. I installed a packet from Termux called "macchanger" and I used the packet in order to - what else - change my MAC address. The packet seems to work. It DID change my MAC address and I am now able to scan for local WiFi. But the thing is that every time my I try to connect ti the Internet, WiFi automatically closes, and the randomized MAC address is permanently stuck ( I think, because I can reset it sometimes, but still, it changes back the the one who got randomized first)
I may get a new smartphone for WiFi, calls and stuff and use my Nexus 5 in order to try and find a fix for it. Idk...

Im proud owner of Galaxy S 2 for 8month or so. Started to facing some weird problems couple days ago. First was - no WiFi connecting (No MAC Address and cant turn it off). Now Process system is not responding errors with 2 options Force close and Wait. No matter which i choose, phone does quick reboot, like when windows explorer hangs and recovers. Can it be damaged nand storage? Phone where used a lot for data storage (Around 2GB per day where written on device and erased). Still should have warranty, but its tricky, coz have no time to wait 2-4weeks. Phone never been rooted. Any tools to check internal memory health?

If you have never rooted nor installed a custom ROM then the best thing you can do is backup using Titanium/MyBackup, restore factory defaults and start all over again.
If you have gone and changed something then you will need to give some details.

Done factory reset yesterday - no difference. Now rooted device, kinda works good, but no wifi. When i use code *#*#232338#*#* it doesnt show my Mac address, says File doesnt exists.
Ok well in your first post you mention your NAND and a lot of data transfer. You don't transfer data to the NAND, or you shouldn't be. You'll be using the 16GB internal mSD card for that.
If your MAC address has disappeared this may be a problem with the /efc mount area, which is of course in NAND. This is probably not the case though.
Now you've rooted your flash counter may have increased. I would send this back under warranty after resetting the flash counter with a USB Jig.
Unless, that is, you remember anything else you may have done to the phone like an upgrade, changing the radio/modem, or something else.
Nothing changed.. Yea you are right about Nand and internal flash drive. Will costum firmware fix it? Or should stay on current rom? Sorry my dumbness - im kinda oak in droid things..
It all depends on what the issue is. I've seen someone talking about the EEPROM being broken on similar issues like this, which requires Samsung to look at the phone.
Custom firmware can only use the parameters the hardware or /efc area can give to it in the first instance. If the wifi MAC address is gone then it's gone, simple as that.
Weird - now see MAC Address when enter code, but wifi it self is not turning on for now. It turns on, does quick scan (doesnt show any AP) and then turns off again. So will bring it to warranty service. Thanks anyway
I received an OTA Update in early to mid May. I am now forgetting which version I received at that time. ( I forget as I have done so many downgrades/upgrades/factory resets in my troubleshooting the last month!) Up until these issues, I've never rooted or flashed a ROM, or unlocked boot loader or anything. My N5 had always been completely stock.
First Issue
It all started with just the sim card. I get "no sim card" message, even though it was in there. This was my original SIM card and I had never ejected it since I bought it new. I found I could turn it off, pop it out and back in, and boot it again. Sometimes it will see the sim card again. It may take 20 times, but finally work.
I naturally got a new sim card, as well as confirmed said sim cards worked in other phones. My wifi and bluetooth were working fine at first. Working with google support, they recommended a factory reset to fix the sim card issue. Immediately after the factory reset, my bluetooth would no longer turn on nor show a MAC address. At this point, my wifi was fine.
Second Issue
In addition to the sim card slot issue, now my Bluetooth no longer works! Around this time, I received another OTA update, this time it was 5.1.1 LMY48B. I had hoped it would fix the issues, but no dice! I start reading up on the XDA forums as I am determined to start rolling back to see if this will fix anything. I unlocked the boot loaded, rooted, etc following the threads on XDA
Third Issue
I do all sorts of flashing to hammerhead-krt16m_4.4 to hammerhead-ktu84p_4.4.4 to hammerhead-lrx21o_5.0 to hammerhead-lmy48b_5.1.1 . On the final flash back to 5.1.1 my wifi now no longer works!!!!!!!!!!! It is stuck at wifi turning on and no MAC address shows. It also seems my cell data is very very slow now!
After many calls to google, I think I finally succeeded in getting a “ticket routed up”. My phone is from the play store around 10/31/2013. They keep pushing I am out of warranty. I attempt to ask for a refurb N5 without luck so far. I am not very confident anything will come from google. This being my only handset now, it is just not an option to send this to LG. My current state is my voice/txt and cell data are working. Data seems a little slow but usable. Wifi and bluetooth won't turn on. I also still have the sim car slot issue upon rebooting. After a bunch of reboots it will eventually see sim card.
What else can I try? Is there a better way to attempt to repair/reload my radio drivers? Perhaps there is corruption of sorts? I have not tried a custom ROM or radio or kernel…… I did take to a local tech. They looked at everything literally under a microscope and did not see any issues that way. I am in the USA and have a lgd820. Although we are quick to assume a hardware issue, I am wondering if there is some sort of incompatibility with the first run of N5 and lollipop….. who knows!
I’ve read all sorts of threads on the internet. It seems I am not the only one. We are very quick to assume it must be a bad motherboard, it just seems too coincidental to me!

This link was actually what i was going to suggest. It seems you've tried pretty much everything in the book except that.
I think its worth a try. Same as any other learning process, take your time and read the whole thing once or twice until you feel comfortable with the process. Then go for it.
Darn it, I should have downloaded those programs BEFORE rooting my phone again. Now I a struggloing to get my SIM card detected again to get data to DL them! whooops!
How would I go about attempting to read my files first to see if they are accessible and potentially write down my old MACs first?
EDIT: I found this but not sure how to get that working? I have Windows 7 and CMD prompt at this point. what program is that using?

OK, I went through those steps. everything appeared to go through correctly. Still no wifi nor bluetooth
EDIT: I rebooted a second time. WHen it first boot up, wifi was on and connected to my works AP. I quickly went in and snagged a screen shot of MAC address. Oddly enough, it did not match what I had input via hex editor. Within a few moments the wifi stopped working. It is back to the turning wifi on issue..... bluetooth still not working as well.

EDIT2: I get access denied when attempting to read either files within their corresponding folders under persist.
I was able to copy my stock files into my sdcard download folder and read them there without issue. Thus seeing my default addresses for both!
Perhaps it is normal, but I am never able to edit the old or new files under persist. I basically renamed original folders to bluetoothold and wifiold. I could delete them perhaps.
Note that I put my phone into airplane mode before doing anything noted in the steps.
Any other ideas? Given that it is showing my original MAC address the one time it worked, this makes me think that it is not reading the files .macaddr at all
I have the same problem. Funny thing is, the phone is just over 2 years old and the motherboard was replaced just 9 months ago (so, brand new one).
In my case, I received and Android update 2 days before I found the phone burning hot and restarting on it's own. Then the same chain of events you describe started to unleash. Now I can't be sure if this is software related, hardware related or both.
Can't seem to find a solution to the issue either.

On the final flash back to 5.1.1 my wifi now no longer works!!!!!!!!!!! It is stuck at wifi turning on and no MAC address shows. It also seems my cell data is very very slow now!
After many calls to google, I think I finally succeeded in getting a “ticket routed up”. My phone is from the play store around 10/31/2013. They keep pushing I am out of warranty. I attempt to ask for a refurb N5 without luck so far. I am not very confident anything will come from google. This being my only handset now, it is just not an option to send this to LG. My current state is my voice/txt and cell data are working. Data seems a little slow but usable. Wifi and bluetooth won't turn on. I also still have the sim car slot issue upon rebooting. After a bunch of reboots it will eventually see sim card.
What else can I try? Is there a better way to attempt to repair/reload my radio drivers? Perhaps there is corruption of sorts? I have not tried a custom ROM or radio or kernel…… I did take to a local tech. They looked at everything literally under a microscope and did not see any issues that way. I am in the USA and have a lgd820. Although we are quick to assume a hardware issue, I am wondering if there is some sort of incompatibility with the first run of N5 and lollipop….. who knows!
I’ve read all sorts of threads on the internet. It seems I am not the only one. We are very quick to assume it must be a bad motherboard, it just seems too coincidental to me!

I'm facing the same issues and I tried all the possible steps I could find on internet trying to repair the problem.
Actually, since the latest updates I was encountering some issues with the WiFi only: not turning on either off and not showing properly the MAC addres. So I decided to factory reset, even SDcard and since yesterday I have tried all the possibile guide I found to internet to fix the MAC address not showing and the WiFi not turning on/off but nothing worked. I tried even to flash again the old factory images, such as KitKat, Lollipop, etc., to lock the bootloader again and to dismantle the phone in order to clean the motherboard, but nothing worked. Phone still gives me MAC address 02:00:00:00:00:00 alternatively with the correct one, I can't figure out on what it depends because sometime it seems to work: it shows the correct MAC, it connects to wifi network; suddenly it doesn't!
I'm really going crazy to understand what's wrong.
You'll have to dig up my final posts on this , but in a nutshell, send into LG for repair, select cheapest option they offer. Receive mint phone. My cost was $45 and about one month... I picked up a cheap $20 phone to get me by.
In other news.... I now have a 6p!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I didnt root or unlock it myself.... im pretty sure i wiped all data before flashing the rom i have on there now, but i cant remember for sure....
seems to be the only way to truly fix my extremely messed up WIFI situation... (wifi kills my phone completely... regardless of whose internet as i tried my neighbours and got the same error). i did a restore to last year but it only fixed it for a day... if im gonna restore to a year ago again, i figure i may as well do a full fresh install, since its crapping out still anyway
i have something called superuser (i know is root access), and something called stk which ive read is sim toolkit, in "system/app" they are both apk's. "superuser.apk" and "stk.apk"
also, will my custom recovery be gone? as far as i remember that is how i flashed my ROM last time... but its been so long i cant remember...
Let me try helping since myself new on forums:-
There are two types of phone resets available- 1.Factory wipe from settings of phone/from custom recovery (cwm/twrp) or 2.Complete wipe performed such as in upgrading os version of android (like i did lollipop from jellybean). The complete wipe is done in custom recovery only under mounts and advance option in cwm and then wiping cache,system,data and everything else. If you do so,you will be losing everything installed in your phone EXCEPT Root and Custom recovery.
Back to your question, if you perform factory reset,NO,you don't lose root. If you do complete wipe from recovery,still you don't lose root of your phone UNLESS you fix the root on reboot.
Choose the reset carefully before installing any rom,read their steps,if they ask full wipe or just factory reset and dalvik cache.

Factory reset WILL:
Remove all apps and their data
Contacts that are not on the SIM card
(In some rare cases) Pictures, music...
Factory reset WILL NOT:
Remove carrier unlock
Remove root (but may remove superuser app)
Remove the recovery
In case that superuser app is gone, just install that same superuser app from Google Play and update it if it asks to do so.

I can with both now, and my phone says its clean...
but yet the problem is recurring now, and wifi, 4g, tethering..... basically any function that connects me to the world outside completely craps out my phone...
i thought the restore, and especially he restore and downloading antivirus would fix it, or at least be able to tell me WHAT the problem is... avast will scan the wifi network, but of course this test now freezes up just the same cuz it has to turn on wifi to do so.... while it was still working this test did execute just fine with no errors....
its as soon as internet is connected... for 3g or even my router, it will read it without the internet feed plugged in. but plug that in and it all goes to crap again. Id just hate to do a full fresh install just for it to all go to crap *again*....

Factory reset fixes all problems that were not made with root. You will not lose root either. For a total fix just wipe everything and reflash rom.
Right now im trying a different router, which doesnt have any windows XP machine plugged into it, and i made it extremely secure. even changed the default username and password to get onto the router itself (never bothered with the other one, the one i had been routinely using)... I did a complete reset of this router before even connecting to it with my phone, after it was secured. the other regular one still has everything else connected to it. this one is literally a separate connection, which i named "phone test" lol.
if it makes no difference, total fresh install is my last resort. if it *does* make a difference however... then something in my other regular router is messed up that cause my phones connections to freeze up - but that avast or AVG wouldnt detect (thats the only weird part)...
i even did a scan of my external SD card the other day, thats clean too.
time will tell, im approaching the 24 hour mark with this new setup. if by tomorrow its freezing up again, its not the router. but if its still working, ill have extreme suspicion that it was in fact, the router, probably something dealing with my XP machine thats plugged into it (well, normally anyway).

im also trying to remember which apps i had updated before any problems started in case there are any corrupted updates i installed, without knowing it. (legit from play store, but still, ive heard that doesnt always mean totally safe, cuz anyone can make them)
Dude, wipe data, cache, system, reflash rom on your phone. BUM, problem fixed.
I still may, but i wanted to play around with the routers first to see if i could fix the problem.... that way id know i wouldnt be fully wiping for no apparent reason. if in a week or so things have been fine and i try connecting to the old regular router... than ill know its something on there infecting my phone... id rather not have a fresh install crapping out on me.
You can do a nandroid backup and then reflash everything. That way if you screw something up or the problem is not fixed you can restore in minutes.
Hi, I'll explain my problem quick. a week ago my Nexus 5 rebooted for no reason, upon rebooting I noticed something weird: app data configurations (app data not belonging to the user accesible memory) were all reset, it was like all apps had been freshly installed but left my pictures music and those things untouched. Wifi was working perfectly fine at this point, some form of data corruption I guess. Upon manually rebooting hoping it would come back to normal I found out wifi was behaving strangely, it would take a couple of seconds to turn on and off. After further reboots it stayed greyed out and didn't respond anymore.
So I began reading about the many possible causes and fixes. Tried reinstalling rom, reflashing kernel, going back to stock through flashing stock images through fastboot, rebooting, different radios. Nothing helped, so I decided to go a bit further and mess with the persist folder, first I checked permissions were ok and reset them anyway, then I wiped manually through a file explorer, finally I decided to do what was suggested here https://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/guide-to-fix-persist-partition-t2821576 with some success. Wifi was still greyed out after a fresh rom install but after some reboots it would pick up and work perfectly, until the next reboot. Then it didn't work anymore. I should note I backed up the files in persist through a file explorer and then manually pasted and set permissions (didn't know you could make an .img file of it) dunno if that has anything to do. They aren't corrupted it seems.
Unplugging the battery briefly fixed it for a day, then the next day the same problem came back without me doing anything.
Some more info:
-I have a working original EFS backup from before it crashed.
-Phone was rooted running CM11 when it happened, been using that rom for 2 years with EX kernel.
-It was a bit low on space (about 400mb left) when it happened, about 300mb were freed after it crashed. I have a hard time believing this could have caused it but maybe?
-It's global D821 16gb version
-GPS has always been wonky (if that has anything to do with it)
-IMEI and IMEID haven't changed.
-Calls and data work fine.
-When either wifi or bt work they show their correct, original addresses, only once wifi showed 02:00:00:00:00:00.
-Rebooting changes little, but powering off then waiting a few seconds and turning it on sometimes brings bt back.
-Leaving the battery unplugged almost fixed it, brought it back for some hours, went to sleep and when I woke up it was gone again.
-When performing the "e2fsck /dev/block/..." command above I wasn't prompted to fix any errors I think, output was "clean, 31/1024 files, 1125/4096 blocks" and the "make_ext4fs /dev/block/..." command reformats it without issue.
So yeah, I've tried everything save baking the mobo cause I'd rather be able to sell a semi working device than a bricked one
Any other thing I could try? Or way to check if it is indeed a hardware issue? im attaching a Liveboot log if it's of any use. Thanks beforehand.

I'm actually in a very serious problem as I have a problem with restoring my whatsapp messages please help me asap I uninstalled my whatsapp on 16th July and last I backed up it on 7th July. Now when I try to restore the messages after reinstalling it shows my google account but it doesn't show the size of backup and also it says no Internet connection please help me. Also my whatsapp images and whatsapp videos folders have disappeared. I really want to get back my chats. Hope someone will really help me as it means alot to me now

I'm already using WiFi and I tried using mobile data as well both didn't help and I tried reseting network settings and all still it didn't work out

Did you check your google account the backup.
It could be app problem, try resetting and other stuff.

Hey yes I checked it as well in google drive it shows the backup I can't restore it locally because I deleted the whatsapp databases like or two months ago will it affect this

So almost everything restored smoothly from Google Backup and it was like being in my phone again with a few wizard steps but then I Installed WhatsApp (WA) and gone through the typical activation and restoring process and. as many, I got stuck at the 24% sometimes, some others 31% and 39%, and never got past the 39%.
I Tried almost everything: restoring from Google Drive, transfer all WhatsApp directory to internal storage and trying to restore from there, etc. Going back to the old phone to create fresh backups just in case they were corrupted as many people suggests, getting every time more delay to be able to activate WhatsApp again up to 12h for both SMS and call activation... just to mess again and feel back at square one, I guess you all feel the pain.
Well, the good news is that I finally managed to restore all the chat history!!! (well, cannot be certain that 100% was restored but I do not miss anything ATM and I can go back up to 2012 chats so I guess that qualifies as "everything" hehe).
So, I'm posting here because I've been searching a lot on the forums and the reddit and for all the people that is having this issue recently, almost no body came back to report success and I know it feels really discouraging It certainly gives the impression that this issue has no fix at all, and that you should accept losing all the chat history and starting from the start again. But from all the data I've been gathering during this week, at least two or three people reported to eventually being able to restore the chat; they fell in one of these two categories: they either transferred to a different phone where the backup seemed to restore okay, and then exported and restored in the target phone with success (something like a "bridge" restore mode, most of the cases I've read did it this way) or they finally succeeded by sheer brute force by trying again and again and again.
I fall in this 2nd category. In the most recent attempt I was doing what I've been doing again and again and again with just minor variations in the workflow and finally succeeded. TL; DR; I think in reality in many cases attempts could succeed by just letting the phone restore the backup endlessly, by not giving up and assuming the restore process went wrong when it has been stuck forever at either 24, 31 or 39% and force closing..
But I know in the midst of desperation OCD kicks in and you want step-by-step success case scenario reproduction so I will tell you all the steps that I followed that I can remember that got me to finally have the backup to end successfully:
0. First of all, in the winning attempt I had already uninstalled WA from the new phone and removed totally the WA folder in the internal storage / sdcard storage. Not sure this is mandatory but just to tell this was the case.
1. Since I got WA working perfectly on the old phone at every moment, I backed up locally for the Nth f%!?&·( time. This left me with the latest local backup plus a few others in the databases folder as a result of keep messing up.
2. I copied the full WhatsApp directory from the internal storage of the old phone to a safe place. This could be the PC or whatever, but PC transfer via USB seems too sloppy. You maybe could do it via ADB, whatever, I went by the route of coping it to the external SD with some random explorer utility like ES File Explorer. It does not matter, the point is to be able to backup the full WhatsApp folder in order to restore it as similar as possible as the original. What we are more interested right now is in the database folder but having all images, videos etc in place will help in getting it like before the easiest way. (Disclaimer: Ok guys sorry if some steps are too obvious to XDA users which usually are highly educated in the matter, but I was thinking of sharing/linking this text on the reddit and others, so please bear with it).
3. I installed latest WA in the new phone, opened the app (I intended to not open but I somewhat forgot) and got to the welcome screen, immediately closed the app at that step.
3. I restored the full folder to the new phone internal storage, pure copy/paste style (as said, in my case via the SD since both phones have SD slot and was very convenient, but via USB, cloud, etc. can be done).
4. I went to the databases folder and only kept the msgstore.db.crypt12 file and the latest backup with a date (ie: msgstore-2019-11-21.db.crypt12), deleted the rest. Honestly I do not think this is crucial but I somewhat wanted to make it easier for WA to know which one to target, I thought about keeping only the msgstore.db.crypt12 but some random dude pointed that the one with the date was needed. I was under the assumption that file structure is identical in both but just wanted to get done with this and keep both, just in case.
5. Before opening again the WA to try to activate and restore with this full local copy, I opened the Android settings app and went to applications > whatasapp > storage, as suggested by user redweaver, thanks for the tip! by keeping looking at the storage usage of the app during the restore process we could get insight about if it was really doing something or the app was really stuck. Keep open for now. In my case, I saw also on the old phone that my data used for the app was 780+ MB, so I had an idea of what should be on the new phone by the time it finished (if it did!).
5b. I don't think this is really necessary but I did it just in case. I was planning to go to work and let the thing running as long as it would need, and I would make sure that the process would get maximum uptime and nothing would get in the way. So I went to Applications > WhatsApp > Battery usage (or something like it) and disabled the battery optimizations for this app. I also went to the developer mode settings and enabled do not lock the phone while it is charging and everything that looked like it might be relevant. Again, most likely this has nothing to do, but reproducible steps, right?
6. Now open WA and activate it as usual, but when it seems that the activation step ended and you go to the next screen, immediately put the phone in air plane mode or disable data/WiFi, whatever. The goal is that it cannot reach Google Drive to look for the online backup. Honestly maybe in the end is not the culprit of GDrive but many people states that the GD backup is broken at this time and suggests going the local route, so we will do it like this.
7. WA should tell you that looking for the backup is going too slow and to skip this step (sorry to not have exact message, I have it in Spanish, but something in these lines, BTW excuse my somewhat limited English ). The point here is to click on the link that says skip the step and when you are prompted with a popup, click also on Skip.
8. WA will display the typical restore / transfer-like screen where the process starts. At this point you have to enable again data plan / WiFi at least or exit air plane mode, don't know really but even if restoring from local it complains about not having internet connection, maybe needs it to encrypt with the key or something? don't know.
9. Now is the feared moment! Even this time, I got somewhat stuck at 31% again. I left it do its thing, and some time later, it prompted for the popup that has a progress-bar from 0 to 100 (honestly, what is the difference between both?!) which also got stuck at 31%. If you let it be, it starts going back and forth many times, I guess maybe its going chat per chat and the progress-bar represents each one? Dunno. Thing is, even in the prior attempts I got at this point and the backup did not finish successfully. But this time I was decided to let it do its thing as much time as it would take, until the end. In the process the phone might display a pop up saying that WA does not respond. I clicked a few times in the 'keep waiting' option, then I just forgot because I did not have time to mess with it and hoped that it was still working on the background, which bring us to step 10.
10. While we are contemplating the backup process, we can go to the settings app again and look how the internal data is going for the WA. In my case, after some time under the restore process, when I went there I saw WA had occupied 0.91 GB of data space. After going back and forth again between WA and settings, the usage keep growing: 0.96, 1.03, 1.10... I thought it was on the right track, and encouraged me to keep waiting. Maybe in the end the process is too slow for old databases. Note that some people speculates that having messages from very long ago might be the culprit here due to changes in the table structure and that this might be the reason breaking the restore process. And maybe it is the case, but even if it is, in my case I finally succeeded where previously I didn't and without deleting anything, so this does not seem to be a deal-breaker or I would have never succeeded. I say it because some people reported that deleting old conversations and trying again finally made them succeed. Now I suspect the true reason was simply that by making the database smaller the process finished earlier, but YMMV.
11. Cannot be totally sure, but in my case, I noticed that leaving WA on the background and clicking on the WA icon again might stop the process for true and bring a message about not being able to recover the chats, I got this previously, do not try to open the WA normally, only leave it temporally to look to the space usage in the settings to get back to it by swyping between recent apps to keep the same instance open and working, this was a key point in my success trial that did not happen during the previous ones.
12. And finally, while I kept switching between WA and the settings and when I last saw like 1.30GB of space used (almost twice the space compared to the old phone, maybe it leaves a lot of temp data) I don't know if I either messed with the app-switching or it really finished, but then I got prompted to the screen where you enter your name or nickname. And when I completed this step, I finally got to the chats screen and everything was like in the old phone! Where previously I would get to a lot of empty chat rooms with maybe 40 total messages restored according to WA. Hurray!
Notice that in my case it was still reporting 31% on the WA background screen under the progress bar popup when it finished!! so it seems that is not really mandatory to experience the 100% complete to have it work in the end, but YMMV.
OK, maybe not the most elegant "guide" out there but I wrote it in a hurry and my english sucks, I just hope it might help someone to not lose their WA chats forever.

Edit: I almost forgot but, for the sake of completeness. I also tried a certain script that can backup WA from the phone and retrieve the encryption key, it will also leave an unencrypted copy of the chats database that can later be viewed with a WhatsApp viewer like this. The script is called WhatsApp Key/DB Extractor, and it still works as of 2019, just look at the latest posts in the thread. Guys here on XDA most likely know about it but if not, you might give it a try. I tried it because I assumed that maybe I could circumvent the restore issues by going that route and pushing the backup via ADB, but turns out the legacy WA won't prepare the database due to the time out of sync issue, or at least the data seemed to be lost after performing the restore process, and the unencrypted database on the PC cannot be digested by WA latest versions by just putting it into the internal storage directly according to what other users commented. But, if you finally give up trying the restore process, it still could be relieving to know that you keep a local copy in the PC that can be viewed with another PC tool, at least you get a backup and the conversations are there, in a different way though. Maybe in the future there's a process that can restore them again to a different phone, and you could then merge the new chat database with the older backup with tools like Merjeapp.

Thank you but today I read this in the afternoon. This guy has solved it through whatsapp databases but I don't have a way go backup locally as I deleted my whatsapp databases two months ago. All I can do is recovering from google drive but the thing in this guy's scenario his chat was actually being restoring but I can't even do that since it says that I have an Internet connection problem
