Question Unlock Bootloader on Tencent w/ Global Rom? - ASUS ROG Phone 5 / 5s

Starting this post to see if there is anyway we can get the converted models unlocked. I've seen it be done with edl mode with the Rog 2 & 3 so I'm hoping we can have the same luck with this model. Any help would be appreciated. I personally would be willing to test.

hi, yes it can be done. i have 2 rog phone 5s.
1 of them i have messed up badly,
the other i was able to unlock and root with the help some online rooters who do it for money.
the exact way is still to be revealed.

I sent you a pm about this.

is there a way to do without the asus utility? my phone was already unlocked and locked by the Chinese before shipping.

Yeah, same here, damn Tencent version, apparently. Seems the ASUS Unlock tool is what might be limiting it to one unlock only but that's from a cursory glance at the apk. (Specifically their web backend which seems to give the phone a stream of bytes to unlock with.)

Me too.
I think it is unrootable becoase they have disabled the bootloader and it is sim locked too!
The only way is to wait maybe after a year it will be something ready for this
The 005SH can be SIM-unlocked by SoftBank. I am in the process of ordering one from Japan and I found this out a few days ago.
The original owner of the 005SH can go to a SoftBank shop and pay a certain fee to get the device SIM-unlocked - this doesn't mean you can use it with any SIM card though - it only means that you will be able to use the device, incl. multimedia (camera/player), without a SIM card inserted.
To use it like a phone, you need a HyperSIM attached to your carrier's SIM.
I have managed to gain temporary root access on my 005SH.
Visit my dedicated site and read the article about it:
http://sharp.cheeseus.org/index.php?page=How2s&id=44
After waiting for more than a year, Thank you!
By any chance, do you have any unlock method for this?

Be careful with what apps you disable! You can check my site for a list of apps I''ve successfully disabled. Sometimes the phone may give you an error screen "Activity HOME is not responding" - Don't worry. When you finish disabling what you want, reboot.
No unlock yet - but I will write as soon as I know something.
There's a actually a guy in Russia who offers a software unlock but he's asking the ridiculous rip off price of $150 plus shipping to/from Russia (at least $50 more).

Did you root your phone
Any luck? we need to keep this phone relevant it needs to be rooted! Boost Mobile (ZTE Max XL)
Anything yet?
I would like to know also if this has been rooted.
BUMB this thing isn't getting rooted is it?
Bump, I just got this phone, I upgraded from the ZTE WARP ELITE. Which I had that phone for 2 years and it still never got root.
I am hoping this one will get root soon (ZTE MAX XL)

I also am searching for root info on ZTE Max XL N9560. So far I have found recovery mode, FTM mode and what appears to be DFU mode. The DFU is the most interesting so far but only because it seems to be the Qualcomm emmc serial port access. The trouble with this phone is that its running android N which looks to have "shared" folder links to which you seem to have write access but the underlying folders do not, so you cannot write. If anyone has any info on the serial commands to interface with the qualcomm emmc, please point me in the right direction, I am willing to use my device for testing.
Bump. I hope this phone gets more interest. I'm more of a PC power user, so I don't get the most expensive phones.
However I really hope this phone can get root. It's a shame because I had the ZTE Warp Elite for 2 years. It still has not seen root.
I just hope this phone doesn't turn out like that one.
I have tried King Root, it does not work as of right now for either.
I've heard with these newer versions of Android, one click roots are a thing of the past, not sure how true that is.
i've also posted in the Android forums, for those who are interested.
Well I just helped root the S8/S8+ and Note 8 and I just picked up an N9560 for 20$ off the streets lol.. its google locked so Ill be looking into it.. im also slightly versed in QC edl mode.. i just need to find the programmers and some stock firmware

I truly hope someone gets on this.... In the last 2 years I've had 4 ZTE Warp elites, 2 ZTE Warp 7s, and now I got this Max pro xl..... No luck on root with any of them.... #1... I've had this phone for less then a week, either I got a lemon ? or this phone is just a total pile of ****... Im taking it back tomorrow to see if I got a wonky one...... The ram is constantly in full use mostly by apps I don't use or want, are unnecessary, and that I can't uninstall or disable. Other than screen size, this phone was a total down grade from the warp 7........

Is it possible to unlock the bootloader without using the official tool?

So I just got a Zenphone6 and I'm following this guide to install LineageOS
https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/I01WD/install
but got hold up at the "Unlocking the bootloader" step, because while running the app on the device it wanted me to agree to a number of terms and also connect to Asus to report my IMEI and possible other info. As I hadn't setup any network connection the app wouldn't proceed.
This disturbed me quite a bit, I've just parted with a fair amount of hard earned cash to buy a piece of hardware and it turned out I couldn't take full control of it.
So my question is, is there any way to sidestep the official unlocking tool?
No

I want to join this question, I really disappointed by such ASUS's policy. Too bad I can't give the phone back. If I wanted this kind of policy, I'd buy half priced Xiaomi.
By the way, have you tried 'fastboot oem unlock' command after allowing unlocking in Developer Options?
I don't see "Allow OEM Unlock" anywhere in Developer Settings.
Also interested in this. I figured since Asus is supporting devs, they would make unlocking as easy as Google/Oneplus does with their phones. Guess not.
Anyone tried this "unofficial" method?

I took a plunge and got the phone, and this method doesn't work. Only the official one does, which as OP says will require an internet connect and probably does transmit the IMEI number and so on.
However, it doesn't require you to connect to a Google account as mentioned in the official Lineage instructions. So I guess that's a partial consolation.
Still, since Asus is in touch with the devs here, it would be great if someone can put forth a suggestion to drop this "phone-home" requirement. It's the only way they can compete with the more dev-friendly Oneplus.
I wish that there was a way. I really want to unlock the bootloader but I'm on the 10 beta and the official unlock tool does not work because of this. There doesn't appear to be a way to roll back to P either unfortunately so I'm stuck for now I guess

Can't Enable OEM Unlocking

I've had this Pixel 2 for years now and like it a bit but I still can't root it because of Verizon locking the ability to enable OEM Unlocking. I've tried to unlock via usb and using lock/unlock critical and such. I've tried downgrading and it fails to do so.
Couldn't I just root it without using OEM Unlocking? I'd rather risk a brick than not root it honestly. Or if there is a way to unlock it, it'd be appreciated.
BLUF: no way to unlock right now.
I'm coming back to this phone because I'm trying to put a different OS on it, like lineageOS, since google has given up on updating their products. I've come to the conclusion, at this time, there is no patch/exploit to get around a locked bootloader. No my case is different, I picked this up on google fi and fi support notes the IEMI as being unlocked, but my phone is still locked at the bootloader. I've scanned the fourms, I've searched the google and I think we're not going to be happy right now
Sorry, hopefully someone has a different solution.

Question Google FI S21+ 5G SM-G996U1 Bootloader unlock? Root?

Long story short, I got a brain tumor (that's not going to kill me) but it's messed up my eyesight... which is great... so I decided to finally get rid of my beloved Pixel2 and get something with a larger screen so I could see the thing. Hence the S21+ and... it works for that. The screen is way bigger so it's great.
The problem is, one other thing that really worked well for my eye problem is VR. I have the Google Daydream headset and my eye problem means my left eye kind of moves around on its own. It's super fun... lol... but somehow, the VR tracks that and I can actually see in VR, use the browser, etc... It's not perfect but it gives my eyes a rest. But, apparently this phone doesn't work with Daydream unless I have root and edit some files. So ok, I need root.
My carrier is Google FI and I was under the impression that all of their phones came with OEM unlock, but I have no "OEM Unlock" option in developer tools. I am very confused by all the different information I'm finding out there.
So, here are my questions:
1. Is my phone already OEM unlocked because this is GoogleFI or am I screwed?
2. Is there some other way to get the OEM unlock?
3. I'm assuming there's no way to get root without OEM unlock?
4. Barring all of the above, does anyone know of any way to trick Google Daydream into working on this phone?
5. If I can't get Daydream to work, I can just pop out the daydream RFID thingy and use the headset as if it weren't daydream, but the controller doesn't seem to do anything. Is there a way to set that up? or is it possible to get a "Wand style" controller like this outside of daydream?
1 no
2 pay 150, look for a paid service on 1st page, I personally don't like that, I went with g9960 route
3 correct

5 see pt 4
Thanks! That's a bummer... I'll wait until there's a community unlock somewhere.
The Daydream link you offered doesn't really help me. If you switch to the cardboard headset, it doesn't support the controller anymore. But I did find a post that helped me get it working:
Trying to get Daydream working on the MZP without root.
Can some one please help me edit the Daydream related APK's to automatically pass the checks in /system/etc/permissions/handheld_core_hardware.xml for and
forum.xda-developers.com
Basically you modify and recompile the daydream app.
I still want root, it's unfortunate Samsung sucks.
If your phone's model number is SM-G996U1 then it is unlocked. I'm thinking about getting one. Did you get it directly from Fi?

Yes, I got it directly from FI.
So the problem is, I'm not up on the current lingo, but there are multiple kinds of unlocks. In this case, my phone is definitely carrier unlocked. Google FI requires that because it hopps carriers. But is it bootloader unlocked? I'm trying to figure that out, but none of the dialer codes work on this phone. I tried to get to fastboot, but Samsung phones are weird. It's almost like they have their own set of rules. lol
Any idea how I can check the bootloader?
It's been a loooong time since my last Samsung phone. But if my memory serves me well, you can turn off the phone then press and hold vol up or down and power button simultaneously (or even 3 buttons at same time). It'll take you to bootloader or recovery mode. You can try all possible combinations until you get what you want, it won't hurt your phone.
Oh, one more thing. If you are using third party dialer app instead of built-in. All codes are not gonna work.
Fi is offering $300 discount for existing customers, That's a pretty good deal. I'm ordering one right now.

I've tried both the default google dialer and the samsung dialer that came with it. Neither will do anything when I enter a dialer code. :-/

I've tried a dozen different ways to get this to work. I do not think the bootloader is unlocked, and I do not think its unlockable without that paid services which is $150
OEM unlocking does not exist, even after waiting the 7 days.
I can boot into download mode, but the volume up thing does nothing
If I chose "Reboot to bootloader" it just boots the phone into safemode.
I've read that if you try and flash TWRP with the bootloader locked, it can brick your phone.
I've found no way to check if a samsung phone is bootloader unlocked.
I don't want to flash it, trip knox, and then end up having it bricked. lol
I'll take a look when I have the phone handy next week and keep you updated

It is true. You can root the phone, but you have to unlock the bootloader before you can root it. Currently the only way to unlock the bootloader in the US versions is to pay $150 to the dude that came up with the exploit. If you have the non us version, you can unlock it yourself.

Just got my S21+ today and you were right. Bootloader is indeed unlockable by average users at least. I did get into recovery mode by using Vol up+power and I can see there's reboot to bootloader option. But it does nothing other then restarting the phone. I don't know how did you get into safe mode tho. (attached a pic of recovery mode from my phone)
Anyway, I'm pretty happy with the way it is and I personally would not pay anything over 50 bucks to get bootloader unlocked.
