4GB or 6GB of RAM?

The Honor 9 comes with two different options for RAM. You can get either 4GB or 6GB. During the launch event, Honor showed a video speed test where the 6GB RAM Honor 9 smoked the Galaxy S8.
In this video, you can see it's about on par with the OnePlus 5.

So which version will you be getting?

The 4GB one, it is already a bit expensive in Europe (at least in comparison to China) and I don't think I need the extra 2 GB anyway

I'd like to take the 6 GB version. But in Europe only the 4 GB version is available. And I don't think buying it in China just to get those 2 extra GB is worthy, since you'll have to pay more after customs and you're probably losing warranty.
Any thoughts about that? Are you buying official store EU or from China importers?

Is 6GB worth it over 4GB?

I have a 6GB Mate 9 and it is hands down the fastest zippiest smoothest loveliest phone I have ever owned.
I'm not sure if this is due to Huawei's alleged anti-slowdown software, the faster processor (although getting any phone I got had the fastest processor available at the time and never felt this quick), or the fact that I chose one with a whopping 6GB RAM.
I now want to buy a Mate 10 and can get either the 6GB or the 4GB version. Does the extra GB make that much difference? I've heard that android doesn't use it. But then why are phones coming out in 6GB and even 8GB versions? I'm hoping devs on here will have a better idea of extra RAM usage than the general public.

i'm no dev but ram is ram.. think of it as a pc , could u fill up 6gb of ram ? yes, depends on usage. what about the mate 10 ? yes and again it all depends on your usage, whether u wanna do so is all up to you.
of course you have to factor in the factory rom and ram memory freeing algorithm and how it works. so is it beneficial for your kind of usage all goes back to you whether u wanna spend the lil extra to have 2 more gb of ram or not.
with my mate 9 at 4 gb i usually have 1gb+ of ram free for my kind of usage, so a 6gb version wouldn't necessarily be useful with my kind of usage or with the apps that i use.

You never know what future version of Android or other software require. I would go for the 6 Gb version.

don't think it is worth it,mostly useless.i'd go for the 4gb and save some money.

I am planning to buy this phone soon.. and i have real question.. is 4GB RAM more than enough? actually i have tight budget for 8GB that's why.
ok the Q' is.. for light-moderate usage i'm sure it's enough, but what about heavy usage and multitasking? well, i don't play games, but usually streaming, YT, socmed, edit photo, video, browsing, downloads, etc multitasking things.
so, based on your experiences, what you thought?
also, for 2nd thoughts..i'm a bit confuse to choose between 4GB RM 5 pro or i should go for 6GB RM 3 pro instead? (only for RAM side factor)

Go for 6gb RAM option if possible. 4gb won't be enough with ColorOS. Try to save up and then buy later. Less than 6gb, you'll see apps getting unloaded from ram. This video explains it best

I think it depends on what you're using your device for. I use my device for everything but heavy usage like gaming or rendering. My Redmi Note 4X(mido) is more than 2 years old. It's my daily driver. I got the 4+64 GB version and it's plenty even with Android 9 custom rom (Pixel Experience). So I'd say yes. It's enough. Except if you're going for heavy gaming or heavy tasking. Then definitely go for 6 GB or if you have more saved money the 8 GB version.

Yes 4GB RAM is sufficient if you know how to use your device but no, as rightly pointed out ColorOS is really poor in efficiency, so phone does feel bit sluggish.
However, it's not the fault of low RAM, it's the software which is really inefficient.
I have got 4/64 GB just a couple of days ago in Flipkart (India) festive sale & when compared to same model higher RAM device, I can't spot much of a difference in day to day usage like Social Apps, depending games like PubG, productivity apps, emailing & photo editing.
It's the ColorOS which is really poor in efficiency, Custom ROM needed for sure.

TBH when people asked me is paying more for more 6 or 8 GB RAM is worth it or not, i would say NO, because 4 GB RAM is enough for simple multitask and gaming, thats why i bought the 4/128 varian (because of the budget too tho) but sadly Color OS make 4GB RAM feels like 3GB, barely 2GB Free memory when not doing anything but clearing your RAM..
However when gaming with game space competitive setting, it feels much better as long you dont set the graphic too high..
i would recommend 6/128 varian tho, however if you want to save the money to get the 8/128 better forget this phone, more models are coming with definitely better feature and price. just dont hold back when you have the money, because new models released almost every month

@FireXMan You spoke on the behalf of my truest feelings. Thank you. Indeed there is no better cost effective budget phone yet but if you can afford a 6-8 GB phone don't buy this device. Go for high end then. This is a wonderful device if we don't want to leave 170€ category.

alright buddies, thank you for all the feedbacks.. i was completely blind with colorOS and its RAM management.. now i know (from yours feedback) it's kinda su*ks
maybe i'll wait for RM 6 (realme OS) or try to save some cash for 8gb 5 pro.
for me.. nowdays 4 GB is less ideal (depends on needs and usage) and 6 GB more than enough, and of course if you can afford the 8GB that's more than ideal.

Got 8gb version and it's worth it. Don't need to change ROM as it's fast as **** and will never fill its 128gb, and if I do I'll stick a 128gb card just because ahah
6gb ram is the minimum to invest on a new phone to last for a couple years even with custom ROMs... Hence why I invested on a 8gb version , can open a ton of apps same time and its always fast ?

tbh 4 gb ram isnt enough if u r staying on colorOS. on custom roms 4gb is enough..thats what i think at least

In my opinion 4 GB works fine enough.
I got more than 50 smartphones till now so i can tell its fine for me.
I am no heavy gamer and reboot every 2 days or so.
Works really great. Got the latest update via Realme India and use the new dark mode. Seems to run smoother than ever.

I have recently bought Realme 5 Pro with 8 GB Ram. So Far loving it. Battery Consumption is a bit higher on this model as more apps stays in memory because I have turned off all Battery Saver Options.
I am really amazed by VOOC Charger performance.

FYI I just bought this phone a few days ago (8gb ram version). I haven't installed many apps yet and I have rooted my phone and disabling some system apps. When I clear everything my free RAM status is 5/8 only. It makes me wonder how 4gb RAM version looks like, 1/4 free RAM when not running anything?

Question 128 or 256 GB?

I can upgrade my phone really cheap through work. My current daily driver is an unlocked Galaxy S22 Ultra 256 GB. I like that phone a lot, but I want to try a Pixel 7 Pro (I used to have a Pixel 3 XL), particularly for the camera. Specifically, I can either get an AT&T 128 GB Pixel 7 Pro for a mere $99 or a 256 GB one for $289. So the difference between 128 GB and 256 GB is $190, which seems pretty steep to me. That's why I'm considering the 128 GB version, even though I'm currently using a 256 GB Galaxy S22 Ultra.
I'm currently using about 140 GB on my S22 Ultra, but that includes 46 GB of music (even though I actually listen to perhaps 10 GB worth and I had added all the rest mostly 'cos I could), about 42 GB of photos and videos (although I don't need to keep every photo and video I take on my phone), and about 28 GB worth of apps. I don't game at all.
Which one would you do? 128 or 256 GB? How much actual space do you have at your disposal on each of storage options? Is the $190 difference between 128 and 256 GB worth it? (I know, I know, very much a first-world "problem"...

Honestly, only you can decide whether it's worth it for you. For some it may be worth it because they need the space and the trade-in value will be greater, while others may not think it's worth it. And only you know what your financial situation is.
I know, not helpful, but hey, it's really a matter of how you feel about it. Either way, it's still a very good bargain you're getting.

I would use a storage analyzer app to see what is using up your storage and decide if you can cut down or not. Keep in mind you want to have at least 10% of the storage unused for best performance. 128GB formatted storage is about 118GB, system uses about 14GB, minus 10% buffer = roughly 93GB of usable storage give or take.

At this day and age I would NEVER buy any phone with less than 256GB because the camera photos/videos are very large to start off with.
What you can do though since you already have a good phone, get the 128GB since it's way cheaper, use a streaming service like Spotify for music and for your photos and whatnot, when you take a good collection of photos/videos either upload them to the cloud or remove them from the phone and store them safely on your computer.

I would naturally lean towards getting the 256 GB version, but that would just about *triple* the cost ($99 > $289), which just seems so stupid, just to double the storage. I'd pay almost twice as much for the option to go from 128 to 256 GB than for the entire 128 GB phone ($99 vs. $190)! Sure, either way is a lot cheaper than paying full price, but I'm thinking that this phone won't be my daily driver, although I might love it so much I'd ditch my S22 Ultra---who knows...

Went for the 128gb myself. Almost everything I do is streamed, and I regularly backup my photos to my NAS and Amazon photos, meaning I can delete what I have on the phone. Not much point in my spending an extra £100 for something I won't use.
However, each person is different. If you have 100gb of music and video files? Then it's a no brainer and the 256gb is the way to go.

My Pixel 6 Pro was a 256GB one but for me the extra space was right waste of extra money so i went for a 128GB Pixel 7 Pro.
However if you think you are going to use more space then buy a phone with more space because you will only end up kicking yourself if you fill it up.

The Pro version also comes with a extra 4gb of ram then the normal version and a bigger display which is why it's a extra $190

I'm talking about Pixel 7 Pro 128 GB vs. Pixel 7 Pro 256 GB, not Pixel 7 vs. Pixel 7 Pro.
Anyway, I've opted for the 256 GB version, even though it was $190 more than the 128 GB version. Even at $289, it's a steal. I'm excited to try it out and see if I like it so much that I'll sell my current S22 Ultra.

I can only answer for myself. I use 40% of my 128GB storage on the Nothing Phone 1.
IDK how this should help you but there you go.

I have 256Gb variant and I'm using 61Gb of 246Gb storage. So 128Gb for isn't enought.

Another way to look at it is the extra 128GB of storage on the phone costs the same as 4 years worth of 200GB Google One storage (UK prices).

I got the 512gb... I used almost all the 256... Next phone will be 1tb

Thanks to Google Photos, I don't feel the need for more than 128GB of memory at all.

256gb for me although so far, have only used about 35gb of it. It's a fear thing, fear of running out of space (which never happens) and fear of not being able to move it on at a later date, I always feel the bigger storage options go first and will get slightly more...

if i don't split phone between personal and business, i would already pick up Xperia phone instead of my current P7P.
am glad that i have my Aquos R6 on other side of my pockets. It has microSD slot and allow me to slot in my 1TB card there.
phone with larger storage tend to be usable for longer time as well, thus less upgrade / phone changes needed.

S10e with 8GB or 6GB?

I currently have a Galaxy A40 and I am considering getting a Galaxy S10e. The reasons are the slightly smaller size, better screen and specs, but mostly for custom ROM compatibility.
Since all phones since the S10e have gotten taller and been striped of the headset jack and memory card reader, I thought I should invest in an S10e.
My question is about RAM memory. I was thinking I should go for the 8GB version (Exynos) to stay more future proof, but it is quite expensive and only available refurbished.
Is the 8GB version a good idea for compatibility with future ports/ROMs, or is it unnecessary and might not get more custom ROM upgrades because of the 6GB limitation of the way more common version? I'm guessing speed would also increase with the 8GB version, but what would you recommend?

Hi, I have the a couple of Exynos version of the Galaxy S10e and all have 6 GB of RAM.
One runs LineageOS 20, the rest runs Samsung's stock ROM (Android 12)
I have not heard of Custom ROMs having a minimum RAM requirement so I doubt that 6 GB or 8 GB RAM would
hinder you now or in the future to run any ROM for the S10e.
Also performance wise, I would not expect much difference. In my experience 6 GB RAM is more than enough.
But of course it depends on how you use the phone. If you load (a couple of) RAM intensive applications and
constantly switch between them, then 8 GB might give a noticable performance boost in some circumstances.
Is that worth the money? In my opinion, only when the price difference is small. If the 6 GB is (much) cheaper
then by all means, go get one. I fully recommend the S10e, has not dissapointed me yet (had them for more than a year and I bought them used).

Get the european 6 GB version: G970F.
Unlocking the bootloader (for root and custom ROMs) is essential now that Samsung won't update the S10e anymore.
The 8 GB versions of the G970U and U1 won't let you unlock the bootloader (unless you pay someone to generate a custom unlock code for you, but even that doesn't work anymore if your phone has Samsung's latest security update).
So make sure to get the 6 GB G970F instead.
If you can find a non-american 8 GB version, please let me know

It should make it more future proof and a nice comeback to anyone with a new phone asking me how much RAM my 4 year old phone has. It would also be nice to have a quite rare version of the S10e, the 8GB Exynos version. But I get your point, rimpelbekkie.
So as my first step, I will buy the $400 8GB S10e (refurbished to new condition). It is supposed to have an Exynos processor. If it turns out that it doesn't, then I will return it and get the $230-$360 6GB version (depending on color and warranty period). I'll let you know, ogier666.
