Uhhh, you are about 1 week to late for this information. Thanks though.
I was rooted, no lagfix when I tried to update. It got to 100% then it said failed. My baseband says I897UCJH7. Kernel 2.6.29 [email protected] #2.
Did the update work or not?
Flashman, how did your OTA update go? Any issues us rooted/unlocked folks should be worried about?
My instinct is to delay the update until I stop seeing posts about hot it F'd up people's phones.

If you rooted and removed anything from stock rom, you're pretty much guaranteed to fail on OTA update. In order to make the OTA download package as small as possible, Samsung uses a diff patch based on the bit differences between stock JF6 image and new JH7 image. So, if you touched the JF6 in any unauthorized way, the patch won't work.
Luckily, you can now use the newly released Kies Mini to do a full ROM update which should be more reliable as you have the entire ROM image downloaded to your desktop and then flash to your phone.

If my settings say i'm at JH7, does that necessarily mean the OTA update was completely successful? It reached 100% then said failed.

What do you mean removed anything from stock rom? I rooted and removed a bunch of the bloatware and did an OTA update with no issues.
I failed along with most other rooted and flashed guys. Luckily I didn't brick my phone in the process. I will wait until some beret update comes along before trying anything ota again.
Sweet life
Nevermind, I guess it didn't update fully cause some of the implemented changes aren't there. I really didn't want to have to run a master clear and have to reinstall all my stuff.

Do you have TouchWiz as your default launcher? and make sure you're on your home screen when you connect your USB cable.
If that doesn't do it you need to get back to JF6 only way or another because Mini Kies will continue to tell you that you have an "unregistered" device until it is at JF6
The reason is because your update failed partially :/
are you guys talking about a new update or just JH7?
We're talking about JH7, some people are still having difficulties getting it on their phone as the OTA is still failing - and if you've failed the OTA you need to reflash to stock before mini kies will work.
when i did the update i was rooted an it didn't fail on install or bootup or anything.
but then again i'm just rooted and nothing else has been touched.

Exactly, I don't think root causes any issues. I was able to check for update on a rooted ROM.
It's when you have a custom kernel etc.

Not really. AT&T has said that the real update will be sent out via SMS text message link, not through the "update software" menu in android.
Engadget just had that yesterday.

Hey All,
I've been following the instructions on how to root my phone.
Issue 1 -- my Build is not listed on the supported list.
My Build is G920VVRU1AOE2
A similar build which is on the list is G920VVRU1AOC3 -- is this just a later version and I am good to go?
So either way I went for it and downloaded the beta6 version to my phone, changed the settings to allow the download and it keeps failing.
Any advice? I am trying to restore pics from a factory reset .....manager at the verizon retail store hit that b4 asking....
Don't upgrade to the of1 you won't be able to root first of all. Next yeah beta 6 is fine to use hit the download data, it then should ask you to install super su. Install it then go back I usually hit download data again for the heck of it. Restart then open ping pong and hit root.

OE2 can be rooted. Just restart the process of rooting. Delete the app, redownload and install it. Once you open the app it should automatically ask if you want to install SU, install superuser, then go back to ping pong, make sure you have a network connection/wifi, click Download, then click the Root button, if you're device automatically reboots, restart the process over. If you're phone doesn't reboot, go to the SU app and make sure the SU binary is installed. Usually if SU opens with no problems, it means it installed correctly and you're rooted. DO NOT UPDATE after this baseband, to OF1. That's what I did and now I can't root. Just turn off automatic OTA updates.

He is already on the latest ROM that can be rooted, OE2. The original release ROM is OC3. The lower letter (in this case C) indicates an earlier version, not the number alone. Regardless, both the release (OC3) and first OTA update (OE2) can be rooted, so you're giving out incorrect advice.

Sorry, I left out "latest ROM that can be rooted". The point still stands that OC3 is not newer than OE2, and both these ROMs can be rooted, contrary to the incorrect information in MrWicked1's post.
Hi,
I rooted my phone before upgrading to Lollipop back in the day and as a result I was left with a non-rooted phone with traces of root (annoying for apps that check that to grant usage).
I effectively still have a couple of su binaries and tools in /system/xbin, what I'm wondering is:
how could these binaries have survived to multiple OTA updates (I'm now running 6.0), as I thought everything except /data would get wiped and reflashed after every update?
I don't think an OTA formats partitions (like /system), it just modifies files/folders. It knows what to update/overwrite/patch, that's why if we modify a file that's going to be updated by the OTA, it will no longer be the exact file and thus the OTA will fail.
For files that have been placed there by the user, OTA doesnt know about them.

Hi,
thanks for the answer. It makes sense now. I guess I'll have to unlock the bootloader to be able to get rid of those files.
PS: if the su binary is effectively there, why SuperSU exits immediately complaining there's no binary? The phone is not rooted, but the binary is there.

Ok since you rooted yourself it's going to show the update. Roms like https://forum.xda-developers.com/sp...g900p-pk1-stock-deodexed-marshmallow-t3521415 the developer disable the update notice for that. Think there's a rule you can flash through twrp to disable that too but idk where it is. A it's somewhere I this forum but it's been a while since I could remember where

But how can I take the update? What's it about? Is there any new feature that we're probably missing?
No you can't take the update unless you unroot. All the new updates for this phone are all security updates and that's it. There's no new features of your on 6.0.1. Anything past pca roms were just security updates. Sprint has been releasing new updates every month for this device but it's all security updates.
First off Safestrap is need for this to work...:good:
This is a complete stock system .IMG I pulled from BQL1 /BRB1 just to keep the same as rest of the roms out there.....Fully bloated nothing removed...100% Stock
The stock images here will now work for SafeStraped Revision 5 or 6 bootloaders in order to obtain nougat rooted
No mods/No crazy fancy foot work....This is a do it your self stock rooted rom setup for all who wants it....
And no this uses the same kernel as other roms, Battery charges to 80% like any other for Snapdragon S8
Manual fix for 80% charge
https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/how-to/wip-manual-charge-past-80-snap-dragon-t3918553
This is the last nougat firmware available before We went to nougat...
Super stock 7.0 No bags/No wallplugs
Without further ado
I have updated with BRB1 as well at bottom of this post.
Download the stock system .IMG from here https://drive.google.com/file/d/1kPJaF4AMNyMr-3RLfycKuX3ZOxPQeWz1/view?usp=sharing BQL1 here
We need busy box from here...... https://drive.google.com/open?id=1k1zOTMAAuqL1KydoHj_QpOwmOQQqSTXT I used this one as i know it works if you want to update go ahead.
We need system mode SU Not system-less from here..... https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/v2-64-2-66-supersu-mode-t3286120
Ok Now we got all that. Place the system .img on internal SD card and extract there.....Then goto TWRP in SafeStrap......
We want to wipe system cache and dalvik....Like always...:good::good::good:
Then after that flash that sys.img to system..
We need to then flash Su and Busy box....For good measure factory reset after all said and done...
Before reboot Reboot to download mode....
In download mode then flash your respective CSC file in Normal odin I use 3.13
If you do not do this you will have a bunch of metro pcs cricket and tmobile crap as well as double and triple menus,So you are warned
Once all this is done reboot system as normal sign in and do your thing enjoy a 100% stock rooted rom.....
No xposed no nothing Be aware xposed will break Bluetooth pairing on reboots...
Also on a side note.If you are on bootloader revision 3 or 4 you cannot downgrade to root nor is root available for these revisions
Revision 5 or 6 bootloaders see here for safestrap, https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s8/development/root-t3904613
Then you can follow this starting with system img... DO NOT ATTEMPT TO FLASH REV 4 OR LOWER BOOTLOADERS ON REVISION 5
Make sure to give our man @jrkruse the proper credits he deserves for Bringing this to revision 5 bootloaders..
Instructs for rev 5 or 6
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=79004426&postcount=29
Again you must already Safe-strap installed...
Credits
As always Thank @partcyborg for root and wonderful rom for our S8.
@mauam for the version of SU downloads
As well as @Chainfire for all of his hard work and SU
@YashdSaraf for his version of busy box
@TheMadScientist For all this crap here lol:good::good::good:
If I am missing any one just hollar at me:good:
Disclaimer This is a build your own system from scratch So any issues you may have can be possibly helped here but in the end it is your own accord of flashing and modding Dont cry to me when you break something
Im a mechanic Not a rom developer I just know there are several out there that dont like the other roms available for our S8 locked bootloader. So just another option:good::good::good:
This is Jrkruzes safestrap method and zips in this post very helpful
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=79004426&postcount=29
And BRB1 latest 7.0 here https://drive.google.com/open?id=1h6e-3qCkE4JhiAlGjk94jpCz2CVMir8Z
And here is the BRB1 baseband CP for odin https://drive.google.com/open?id=1BuUc-R6jU7ha4nn4vkPrLfvfz2axi5Ru
Flashing this is similar to flashing the first one.But if you are on my stock rooted now you can dirty flash this system followed by su then busybox and then open odin and reflash CSC or a no signal situation will present itself.
Other than that I did dirty flash all of my apps and most of my settings were left untouched...

On a side note some reason I cant download firms from sam mobile so Im using some off site no name site But will upload em to my drive for your pleasure of downloading
And on a second side note you should be able to more or less dirty flash this one But I would reflash SU and busy box just incase as well as any other system based mods you do Cause as again this will be 100% stock so any debloation you have done will be undone again This note is for any one already running the stock rooted system not coming from other roms

By the way @TheMadScientist, you should make a correction to your OP about your build number versions. One of them is wrong. Specifically when you say the build number BLQ1 twice in the OP. It should be BQL1 instead of BLQ1 so people don't get confused. I know it's a minor typo but I thought I'd point it out. Or maybe you noticed but didn't care to fix it, who knows lol. Also, quick question, is there anyway I could go about deodexing these ROMS of yours? Or should I message PartCyborg how to go about it?

This will not work with BL 3. You cannot downgrade either. There is no way for you to root with ANY ROM on the regular S8 above BL 3 as of right now.
Sent from my SM-G950U using XDA Labs
Thanks for the step by step.. I'm hoping to do this with the g950u1 firmware. I am guessing since you said you must start with rooted firm, if I use magisk and get systemless root the add safe strap then proceed to your steps that should put me in the right direction.. then I could make a full system backup to make a flushable stock pre rooted firmware I could store in case of a rainy day.. does this sound logical or am I a bit mistaken?. I'd like to create a true 4 file firmware from a system backup after I make any adjustments or add any apks so that if I ever need to reinstall.. everything will flash without having to readjust settings or use data to download any of the apps/flushable .zip files as well as avoid the need for re writing the build.prop and such. I'm open for any suggestions if you have any. Thanks again!
In first part there is no CP just sys.img SU & BusyBox
So I assume no need of CP there
And in BRB1 there is CP file do we have to flash that thru regular Odin or we can skip that.
Thanks
