I changed my resolution, cant unlock phone - General Questions and Answers

I changed my resolution to 1920 x 1080. Why? Because I wanted to be able to cast my phone to with a 16x9 aspect ratio to my tv without black bars.
Apparently this is a royal screw up because I wasn't able to press nope or whatever after it asked if I wanted to keep the changes. And now, the picture on my phone is less than 1/3'rd the visible screen. In hind sight perhaps I should have set it to 1080x1920 or 1440x2160
I can't unlock my phone. I have tried swiping from every direction but its not working. Using my finger print doesn't seem to work either. Having owned this phone for almost 2 years, I know where the sensor is, it's just not working, although I see the "animation" on the screen.
I've swiped from every direction and I can't get an unlock screen.
My phone is rooted, BUUUT since I can't figure out how to unlock the screen, I am not able to change the usb connection from simply charging to file transfer. Did I just hose myself in the most noob possible way?
If I long press the power button to access the reboot shut down pull out menu, I can't seem to interact with that either.
I have tried to randomly press different parts of my screen and SOMETIMES it seems like the screen auto unlocked and shows the "Easy DPI Changer [Root]" interface, but it doesn't last long. And then sometimes I see a different screen where it shows the easy dpi app, but then also a white box that says
Power Off
Restart
Lock Down

Oh the pain...
The few, the bold... the screwed.
Hope you were backed up as it looks like this might be one of those "things"

ahahaha the story escalation is uncanny
how did you change your screen resolution anyway? via ADB?

Have you tried a hub or OTG cable with a wired or mouse with a dongle? If I'm not mistaken it may still work even though the usb is set to charge.....its worth a shot

Most of my stuff on the cloud. The most important thing that I have backed up is my 2 factor authentication app... BUT I'm back in business baby.
I bought an overpriced USB C to USB A adapter from staples for 20 bucks, connected my mouse and I was able to unlock and reset the resolution to default.
@TravisHC I was on the way to the store when you typed that reply haha.

Glad you figured it out and are back up and running. Nothing worse than a good device come victim to software malfunctions or human error. Lol I had the exact same issue as you once so I had faith lol

[Q] HDMI Changes usable screen space?

Kind of a weird problem, and I'm not sure if I'm the only one it happens to. If I plug the Transformer into my TV to say, play SNESoid on the big screen, my sixaxis controller stops working. This only happens when I'm using touch profiles within the sixaxis app. Tried to figure out why, and found that my usable screen space changes as soon as I plug the HDMI cable in. What I mean is, I get a "dead" space between the bottom of my display, and the action bar at the bottom of the screen. Tried two different brand TVs, different cables, different roms, and different kernels and the problem persists.
I know I'm not fully explaining this, because I can't figure out how to put it into words. If no one has figured out my ramblings by the time I get home from work, I'll take screen shots of the problem and post them up.

I heard that the newest OTA stock update helps. ICS may help. I hear that revolver new update helps but not for my tv at least. I've also heard there are a few new and updated kernals that solve the problem of dead bar space. I have an AOC HDTV so i am probably screwed.
However, turn off touch profiles. You don't need them for emulators. I've played S3&K several nights with the HDMI cable and six axis app with ps3 controller and it works great. I even make the L3 button access the task bar menu so I can load saves and save easily. Very useful for those pesky super emeralds. I have not dabbed with the touch profiles yet so I don't know.
the hdmi output gives out 720p feed and increases the size of the system bar from whatever size it was to 80px high leaving 720px height usable to apps which will resize them and throw off your touch profiles
Ok... so it is a known issue... good. Any idea if the Prime suffers from the same problem?
I would turn off touch profiles, but i cant stand not having analog control in N64oid

its not an issue it is just that most tv's have a 16x9 resolution so having it use a normal resolution will assure that there are no black bars on the tv

Well, you're right, the issue is not the tablet.
[rant] The issue is that my tablet and my laptop are 16:10... My TV is 16:9. My bluray movies are 2.39:1. Half the content on cable is 4:3. On top of that, it would seem no one knows which aspect ratio to scale their content to.

How to change Nvidia Shield Tablet K1 Resolution from 1920x1200 to 1920x1080?

How to change Nvidia Shield Tablet K1 Resolution from 1920x1200 to 1920x1080?
Basically they have this feature built in if you connect the HDMI cable to the tablet... then the tablet reboot in 1920x1080 and displays only on the HDMI screen (the tablet screen is off)
When you disconnect the HDMI cable it drops a notification every 1-2 minutes do you want to reboot back to normal 1920x1200 resolution and it keep asking till you agree and reboot.
My question is how i can turn it to 1920x1080 or just how to disable the notification that pop up over the screen?
I prefer not to root the device if its possible.
Nvidia Shield Tablet K1 working on Android 6
Thanks.
Hi, came across your question wile looking for a solution as well. I do have a work around for the constant ask for revert from console mode. But not sure if it works on Android 6. I'm on 5.1 still. Hate 6. I do the Console mode remove HDMI thing. Then I go on a rampage force stoping EVERYTHING I find running. I go to Settings/App/Running and force stop everything. Then the Show cached processes, also stop everything. (and I mean Everything I see, including all those google thing I dont need running at the time, tho most will turn themselves on again) Then to the 'All' apps tab and look for everything Nvidia/Shield related and force stop it. And it works. The nagging stop. I haven't figured out what is it that stop the message as I did this once on a rage for that stupid message and since it worked I do it like that every time. And I've play for well over 2+ hours without the message popping up
Oh, also, I don't have a controller but I have All-In-One Toolbox, that I also run to close everything after all the force stops. Just in case. Well with that app you can have a toolbar on the notification and add a 'Recent app' there. Which you can not only use to switch but if you tap it and then tap somewhere NOT on other apps you get send to Home screen. (Wish the add Home/Back as well)
I know it seems like a hassle. I only do this when I want to record something on Ultra and get 1920x1080 instead of that horrid 1728x1080.
OH! And the touch accuracy gets worst the closer you get to the upper/lower borders (on landscape) due to touch screen reading the 1200 pixels on a 1080 shrunk image. Takes some getting used too, but worthy to capture on an OCD friendly video resolution.
I'm on Stock 5.1.1, not root.
Gonna look for a ROM that can do 1080p and also keep the Navbar. And maybe even add 1 tap Screenshot/record shortcuts for the navbar. Old cheap tablet used to have that screenshot button on the nav bar. Which was awesome for quick snap at those special gaming moments.
Anyways, since you have 6, try going Settings/Apps/All and force stop everything Nvidia/Shield related. And let me know how it works. Running apps 5.1.1 management is one of the things that keep me on in. And how micro SD works.
Hope it helps.

Hi,
Thank you for your reply.
I tried to force stop but it still pop up the notification to restore to 1920x1200.
About the Android 6, I love it Because of the SD format that turns your SD to be a part of your device storage.
I have a controller so i can navigate even without the nav bars
If i will find something i will update here.

Thanks for this post, it was answer to what I wanted to do with my tablet - getting full screen for HDMI output without console mode, which frankly would be actually worse even if it did't puck up with my Dualshock 3 (console mode for some reason closes/disables the DualShock 3 connection with the sixaxis app from Play Store) - when using Mirror mode I can use my Dualshock 3 fine and using terminal before starting to play makes the screen look glorious, especially with games like sonic 2 android or Final Fantasy IX android.

Android Q Desktop Mode

Hello Community.
As any of you who did some tests know it is in early state. I am wondering is it not to popular topic? Since I have switched from Galaxy S8+ and I was using Dex OS everyday, it is the feature I miss the most.
I think that it also gives a lot of possibilities for anyone who travels a lot. It is very nice to have a "desktop" in a hotel room on which you can answer emails, or brows internet in desktop mode. All you need is only keyboard, mouse and usb-c to hdmi cable and of course your phone.
I have just tested new Desktop Mode on Android Q(OnePlus 7 Pro) and what can I say?
Not to much.
And here is my question. Does anyone know about some development which is likely in progress or maybe there is any option to port Samsung's Dex OS to other phones?
All I have found is only one guy: Daniel Blandford:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fj2P0omAkek
and what he is showing looks very promising, but still it is only one guy?!?
My dream and ideal solution was razer's project project Linda
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gKu-T13vXs
which was promised to be released along with Razer Phone 2 but in the end was killed.
There is some other solution to lapdocks but for me not to ergonomic in terms of mobility.
I believe that Android as a daily OS is possible and I hope that it will go live soon.
Same here. I tried it, have Bluetooth mouse and foldable keyboard, and really liked how snappy it is! However, there's no way to adjust resolution or font size, which would be the first step toward something really usable. I would like to test the limits of any solution, whenever available.
I discussed with Daniel Blandfort and he told me he currently stopped development of his Flow Desktop because he could not raise any interest and get enought Patreons to keep going unfortunatelly...
Maybe you can use Sentio desktop on your oneplus ? I think it looks better than the current raw android 10 desktop.
Something looking really neat I found is Keydock. It's basically a keyboard-docking station to use desktop mode.
Mod edit: Link removed!
There's a website (Mod edit: Link removed!) where they try to get enought suscribers to launch Keydock on kickstarter
Sentio was a good find and worth trying. However, it didn't work for me. Also, it seems that work on Sentio stopped. Last update was someone last year.

Flow desktop looked awesome, it's a shame if development really has been discontinued.
I wonder how it would have worked, would it have been a custom rom or an app

There is new project named Nexdock. Looks very promising. It's basically a laptop without CPU, GPU. All is based on the phone connected via USB-C cable.
http://nexdock.com/touch/
Here is TK Bay testing this with OnePlus 7 T Pro McLaren
starts at 6:22
But as he mention on his video, OnePlus (Android Q) is still not ready as a full desktop mode (resize open apps, etc), it looks more like basic android desktop.
NexDock with OP 7T Pro McLaren Edition
About a week ago I received my new Nexdock Touch. Great build quality, looks similar to Macbook Air.
Only issue I have found, is a problem with connection and starting Desktop Mode. It sometimes start charge the phone instead lunching Desktop Mode. But when connected, the phone wont charge anymore.
Looks like there is a order in what to connect first, Lapdock with cable, than phone with locked screen.
What works:
+ touch screen
+ tauchpad
+ sound
+ most of the buildin OxygenOS apps
What don't work:
- dimming phone screen, to save battery
- charging the phone while connected
- some other/additional installed apps (like ES Explorer, All in one Toolbox)
- Nova Launcher on extended screen
Some of the issues can be fixed with Taskbar 6.0. This will add additional taskbar on the extedned screen, will fix the issue with dimming phone display to preserve battery.
Taskbar 6.0 with some extra features explained here.
When Camera app is open on the phone, everything slows down, phone is laggy and slow. Word and Excel seems to be in mobile mode, as all is very large on external screen.
This mode helps to improve security, as all data is on one device - mobile phone. This is handy when I'm working in the car, or I need to send email with invoice or even play PUBG
Overall, Desktop Mode is amazing experience, it shows how powerful OnePlus 7T Pro is.
Please add thumb up at OnePlus Ideas 2 for expanding Desktop Mode!

Do you have Nexdock Touch? If so, I have the same problem when connecting cable to Nexdock and than to my phone.
Desktop mode won't turn ON, only I have charging in progres with external screen connected, nothing else works.
So to solve this issue , I need to disconnect the phone by the time charging is started. Than plug the cable back. This may take a moment and few times to unplug and than plug back. Until the charging of the phone won't start, than if you leave it plugged, all start to work.
This must be an issue with Desktop Mode in development state.

This means you have OP7 Pro, right? Not the OP7T Pro
Could be an issue with development state of your Desktop Mode. Try different cable or check if your phone is compatible with connecting keyboard/touchpad through USB-C port.

I have very similar issue. First thing after connecting my NexDock Touch, phone starts to charge, than there is no way I can use keyboard, touchpad or touch screen. No any key on the keyboard works, so no dimming the screen, no volume, no caps lock. Only there is a desktop on external screen.
So I need to unplug the phone and connect it back. After few times, with locking the phone and unlocking, connecting the cable and than disconnecting, Desktop Mode starts to work with all peripheral coming with NexDock Touch.
But than, the phone wont charge anymore. So it's only charging the phone without interaction (external keyboard/touchpad/touch screen) or no charging with everything working fine.
Another issue is Night Mode - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tx3ZqPJeoPs

Improve face unlock

Anyone have problem with face unlock about bad angles or not working under bright sunlight! Just set up face unlock under direct sunlight! make sure sunlight sight direct into your face when setting up. Hope that's helpful, it works for me at least
Ps: if you are wearing glasses, put them on when setup.
My biggest issue with face unlock is random challenge to unlock with PIN for "added security".
I say random because I've not rebooted the phone. The message is different when rebooting. I've sent numerous feedback with logs to Google but Google doesn't respond to feedback. I have no idea why this happens. It's annoying. This can happen as often as once a day at random unless I'm missing the reason for it. Maybe it works for days without error. Maybe this is required at intervals I've not recognized?
Patterns I've noticed otherwise include a pause to unlock when I grab my phone and it's upside down. It usually gives me time to recognize this and get screen upright. My phone is usually on a stand upright in portrait mode so it's rare that I pick it up with screen not orientated correctly.
I've not tried setting up face unlock in bright setting though.

your problems is totally different with what I mean to. However, It think your problem could be from software or setting. you would reset your phone. And if that keep going, using google warranty is best choice.

Thanks. I should talk to Google Pixel support again. I've been reluctant since they couldn't resolve an issue with Google Home app. They referred me to Google Home app support but they kept getting stuck on the fact they support hardware, not the app. I could link Google and Philips Hue but couldn't add Philips Hue to Google Home app. Failing every time.
Long story but the mobile apps kept telling me that that there was an issue getting provider information for Philips Hue. Yet it went through all the steps and failed at the end, never adding Philips Hue. This once worked until it stopped; nothing I was doing was working, even asking Google and Philips for support was pointless with them refusing to talk to each other or continue support with me until resolution. One day my phone had a notification to control my lights and the linking and final step worked that time. I followed the notification and seemingly skipped several steps I've went through to failure but this time everything went as expected and I can control my lights again. Finally! What was the issue? Google won't say but I suspect they discovered it long after I gave up. Months!
I've seen face unlock improvements in the notes of the monthly updates so I've thought Google is aware but like before, not on my timetable. Low priority. With my past slate now clean, start a new one.

The issue you explained about the seemingly random pin requirement is actually not an issue at all. It's coded into the software as an extra security measure. If you lock your phone and do not unlock it for XXX amount of time (eg. 1 hour) then the phone requires your pin or pattern to verify its still you and your phone hasn't been physically compromised. The other trigger for this happening is at or around 6 hours since the last time your pin was physically entered, it will require you to enter it for the same reasons I listed before. Using face unlock doesn't reset the 6 hours, only physically entering your pin code will.
Hope this helps you understand a little better what's going on with your phone. We all have the same thing happen to us, just most don't notice it when it happens.

Your hour or six a guess, estimation or actual?
What you described seems true but my use would likely indicate more quiring for PIN than I experience. Just asking.
But if this is intent, I don't agree PIN is added security. Sure face ID can be duped in many ways but at the very least what I'd prefer is safe zone like home where face unlock never dupes to PIN or added security. As I recall, total unlock is only option for designated safe zone like home, unless considering Bluetooth device which I don't prefer unless it can distinguish my Fitbit Versa 2 watch is very near and worn?
Surely there's less invasive methods users can deploy to not be so inconvenienced at home. I've even seen this at work with my wife's iPhone X. More choices seems a logical approach to consider. Why hasn't it?
Phone on charger just now, after just talking to Google Assistant, give a smart home command it interprets correctly, the smart assistant says sure, after you unlock your phone. I dismiss the Google Assistant and promptly unlock my phone without the stupid PIN. Not being very user friendly. I'm under the impression many developers don't just use the device and rethink their intents to be most user friendly.

I feel like I don't see this message more than twice a week... which certainly goes against the every 6 hours idea. My impression was that sometimes movement or Soli will wake it up and it sees something it thinks is a face but it can't unlock with it. If it sees this enough, it may prompt for a PIN unlock with the different message. But sometimes, I think I see this message taking it out of my pocket... where it can't possibly see a face. But maybe it saw part of my face as I was putting it in. It would be interesting to know what the actual rules are regarding this.
I know that when I have the screen upside down, the screen wakes but gives me time to get it upright. Seconds. I don't recall seeing this fail me, thankfully.
I don't have much or any of the Soli features enabled but have screen tap to wake and skip unlock screen enabled.
I've wondered if having the generic stand was causing random face unlock errors but reach for phone is disabled. And I've tried placing my screen down flat instead of the stand and still got prompts to unlock with PIN.
Sometimes I grab my phone and tap to wake doesn't work. But it doesn't mean I get a prompt for PIN every time either. Yesterday, I tapped on the screen repeatedly and it woke and unlocked when it recognized my face. Maybe it's a latent response but I'm usually using the power button to wake by then.

So I did a chat with Pixel support today.
For the issues with frequent queries for PIN and Voice Assistant asking me to unlock my phone first, the agent had me delete storage and cache for Google and Phone app, delete face unlock and add it back. Reboot phone and get back with them if this doesn't help.
The agent indicated there's not a timer that cannot be reset with unlock that would naturally challenge for PIN after counting down. His advice is to do the above for that issue. The face unlock is suspect. I hadn't done this until today. For kicks, I tried it outside in daylight though the agent didn't recommend this idea. Fwiw, I can unlock my phone in the dark but maybe daylight helps better see contours of the face.
I have a case number to chat again if this continues. Agent says it shouldn't reoccur.

I only have a basic understanding of how face unlock works... but from what I understand it uses an IR dot projector and two IR cameras to stereoscopically sense the depth of your face. This is why it works in the dark to begin with and based on this, I would think direct sunlight would be a detriment rather than a boon in this sensing method. But it may not have any effect at all as I don't know exactly how the sun and the dot projector overlap in wavelength and strength.
Having a "bad" face calibration might explain it as the phone is more often unconfident about it being your face. So it triggers more failures which prompts the increased security message.

Agreed. It's unknown if added light is a help, hindrance or placebo. But the agent seemed confident just replacing the face unlock would solve my issues.
Not all of my issues sounded familiar was the reason for suggested extra storage wipes and reboot.

I spoke from my experience. Before that if i will to unlock i have to keep it direct to my face as the right distance or angles and it hardly work with changing light conditions like under direct sunlight. But after set up with aid from sunlight i could say it work quick and more reliable as my iphone xr even in dark or direct sunlight.
I dont know if that is hardware or software problems.
73 hours of uptime. Random PIN for added security prompt has returned when Google Pixel support said it shouldn't after deleting and adding face unlock.
Taking my case ID back to Pixel support. I'm not sure the agent was right about face unlock not occasionally duping to PIN unlock. Very annoying if this is intended or not.
72 hour bug?

So my Pixel 4 XL face unlock did the same prompt for pin after another 72 hours. No reboot; no error or explanation why other than added security. I'm at 146 hours uptime.
I asked Pixel support again about this. They're researching but want me to do a factory reset now and get back to them.

What road to smaller screen / Apps?

Hi Guys,
Long time user of Sonys Compact phones here, so I'm custom to small screens and one hand operation of my phone, i HATE that I have to use two hands, and the manufactors thinks that we all loves big screens..
Ok so I bought a Google Pixel 4a, but for me thats also to big.
I have tried to set the display resolution via adb wm Size function, it works like a sharm, but the phone centeres the display, and google have for some reason removed the overscan function i version11, so I cant set the display to be on the bottom. "damn you google"
I have also tried the Quick cursor app, but its so slow to use all the time.
Then a thought, is there a way to force all apps only to be X pixels high, and fixed at the bottom of the screen? I dont want to ever reach over a certain point of my screen.
Or is there another way to solve my problem?
We are seeing our selfs as a smart race, but creates devices that needs two hands to operate?! jeezzee
PS. No root options wanted.
Kind regards
Morten
May be Android's Split Screen mode is a workaround.
BTW: On ChromeOS, Android apps can be presented in free‑form windows that are arbitrarily resizable
