I’ve used stock or (virtually stock) Android phones for years. My last properly skinned phone was a Samsung Galaxy s II. So using EMUI on this phone has been interesting. There is a lot that I like, but here I’ll describe a few annoying quirks I’ve noticed, plus any partial-solutions I use. Hopefully this will inform perspective and current P20 owners, but also, if you have a solution to any of these problems, do let me know!
- The settings menu is terrible. They have messed with it so much, and added so many settings, that it is often impossible to find what you’re looking for. The solution is to search, which, thankfully, works well.
- The lock screen wallpaper changes every time you unlock the phone. I feel like an idiot, but I can’t work out how to set my own (single!) wallpaper. There are these collections which you can choose between, and then from the lock screen itself you can favourite wallpapers from the collection (not sure what this does) and pause on a wallpaper from the collection, and it looks like you can add your own collections, but this doesn’t seem to work. There MUST be a work around. All I want is the same wallpaper on my lock and home screen!
- Notification content (including media controls) is always hidden on the lockscreen until you authenticate, regardless of the app setting. This seems to be a bug. Setting up face unlock (and swipe to unlock) at least means you can see your lock screen with notification content when at a face-unlock-friendly angle.
- The double tap vol down to launch camera works fine, except when I’m listening to music, when it just turns down the music. No idea why they don’t give this functionality to the lock button like most OEMs.
- Unlock by voice for Google Assistant doesn’t seem to work. I’ve had this problem on other phones so don’t know if I’d blame Huawei. It responds to ‘OK Google’ from screen off (which is better than my OnePlus) but won’t actually unlock.
- The always on display is a bit weak. It doesn’t even properly show notifications.
Anything to add? What EMUI quirks have you found?
Try this for always on display and notifications

I find the settings menu perfect compared to samsung or other brands.

Just open gallery, open any picture you want, set as background for home- and lockscreen, thats it

I have sometimes problems with starting my spotify automatically when connecting a bluetooth device, I think a sleep mode problem. Another bug is the one with updating widgets. My calendar widget f.e. crashes after a time. found a workaround with "your calendar widget".
But I think all in all its a great phone with great features

You can find this setting in 'Security & privacy' - 'Screen lock & passwords'
=> 'Update covers' to enable and disable it and 'Covers' to choose the pictures to show
EMUI has made me fall back in love with OxygenOS - the way EMUI treats notifications and the lock screen is diabolical. If I unlock my Oneplus 3 but don't read a notification, I can lock it again and the notification remains on the lock screen. The notifications span the whole screen, and work perfectly.
Also, Spotify on OxygenOS uses album cover art as lock screen wallpaper when playing, similar to how EMUI treats the local Music app.
This gonna be a debate for eternity.
People who come from xiaomi or samsung wont feel too awkward with emui,
Different case if you come from AOSP, or Oxygen or LOS.
Best solution is slapping NOVA launcher as soon as you use the phone.
I've used several Huawei phones now, in fact since the Mate 8 they've tended to be my main phones through most of the year (I still try others, but tend to come back for the battery life and cameras, granted the cameras have not been as good as competitors but the camera systems are more fun to me as a person with an amateur interest in photography and I've taken a lot of shots I don't think I could have got from the others). The P8Max was my first, and the UI/OS was a bit of a dogs breakfast - so many things were broken (many due to trying to increase battery longevity) and many other things required complex workarounds beyond installing Nova which I've had on each of them. It's pretty well fine now, but if you're coming from Samsung or others it's very different and will take a bit of time to adjust to - particularly the level of granular control you have on things affecting battery life. Once you get a handle on it you'll probably end up appreciating a lot of what it offers.
Google Assistant works fine but it makes conflict with Huawei voice control (so turn off one of them)
Double tap volume down to launch camera is a great idea but why the hell it does not work when players or different apps are in the background.....
Hi there!
Setting your own lockscreen carousel:
Settings>security & privacy>screen lock & passwords>magazine unlock>subscriptions>added by me>add>choose image
You can create your own cycle of wallpapers.
In themes App make sure you set me>customize>lock screen style>magazine unlock
I wish adjusting the volume on Bluetooth headphones adjusted the master volume like on all previous phones I've had instead of acting like an in-line control.

Hi how do you get rid of double tap on home screen it's do annoying it's a short cut to access latest apps that have used I have Nova Which is excellent and I'm coming from a Samsung S7 to a P20 pro please help !!
To enable or stop scrolling wallaper just swype from the bottom on the lockscreen and you will see Pause button at the left. if you press that, the scrolling will be disabled and a "play" icon will remain.
I've debloating quite a lot from emui.
Installed swap torpedo
Runs faster now and battery lasts longer.
Huawei should offer a vanilla update.
Last time I saw so much bloat was on Samsung.
Unnecessary.
EMUI was one of the reasons I ditched my P10 after 6 months, went back to an iPhone, then to a Nokia 5...
Have any of the roms developed for the P20 done away with EMUI otherwise this device will be another one i'll have to remove from the list of potential upgrades.
Killing foreground apps
Hi, just bought the p20 pro after years with Samsung. I have noticed that it often kills apps that I am currently using, sending me back to the home screen (reminds me of a crash to desktop in windows computers).
After some googling similar problems I adjusted the app auto start and ignore battery optimization settings and it did get better, although it is still killing apps which I presume is using a lot of memory or battery (or both?), for example posting stuff on Instagram (Instagram is whitelisted from optimization and managed manually).
This is really bugging me, anyone else with the same problem? I'm running android 8.1.0, EMUI 8.1.0 and memory always stays between 2,5 and 3 GB.

Yeah, it's turning out to be a deal breaker for me.. Too bad since I really like the phone. Just hope it's a bug ?
Something seems to be happening to spotify when it is running in the background using my bluetooth headphones. I get stuttering and odd pauses, its basically unusable.
I have found if I use andriod auto to run spotify or use the wake lock program to keep the phone in a higher power mode it seems to help. If I have the charger plugged in it works fine as well. It appears to be some sort of power saving issue (yes I have told the phone to ignore spotify's power usage) or something to do with bluetooth power saving. But it works fine in a car.
Thats my only real complaint, and had I known I would have this issue I would have probably grabbed a onePlus device. Using Sure 215's
One thing I did notice, and I also fixed the problem quite simply.
I turned the display Resolution to HD from FHD my thinking was with a lower resolution I'd have better battery and better performance.
What I got was worse.
60fps lagged so badly it was unusable.
Transitions especially to the Google feed lagged and was annoying.
Asphalt 9 lagged and was extremely crap.
Turned FHD back on, all went back to silky smoothes??
Logic didn't exactly prevail here but it works.
So in short if you've turned on adaptive resolution or HD.
Turn it off
I'm facing this weird problem with my p20 pro. In. 128 and 131 and 152 firmware versions whenever in have an incoming call my screen doesn't wake up to show my who is calling me, unless I press the power button or the fingerprint sensor. If the call is missed my screen wakes up normally to show me the missed call notification. Any solution?? I have no fingerprint lock or pass code lock. Just swipe.

Overall this phone has been way above expectations. There are a few quirks that hopefully will get addressed in a future update and hopefully Huawei is watching...
1. USB charging from laptop/desktop/car. It trickle charges at 200ma, most other phones charge at 1 amp and up connected to my car. Same with my laptop. Not having good charging in the car is a problem because I cannot use another charger with Android Auto, I have to have it plugged into the car's USB port. All my other phones would get at least 1 AMP charging rates, I don't need super charging or anything, but 1 amp or what the car can support out would be nice.
2. Camera crashing. I have to reboot the phone almost every day because I go to fire up the camera app and it cannot connect to the camera. I am not a heavy camera users either, but I do use video chatting about an hour a day. Basically all the cameras front and back just go offline after some use.
3. Using a 3rd party launcher like Nova, it's fairly buggy, but it sounds like this fix is already in the works so we'll leave it at that.
4. When using gesture navigation the left and right swipes for back need to be physically lowered on the screen to say the bottom third. There are a few apps that need this swiping action (Google play) that will close. I have to do the swipe way way up high to get the phone to not invoke the back button.
5. Less aggressive background task killing. I still have some things that get killed once in a while even with all the appropriate things set.
6. Some sort of on screen notification light or alert in conjunction with the always on screen so we can visually see at a glace if there is a message waiting. Just a simple flashing dot in the corner would do.
The only other thing I had noticed and this only happened once so might be a fluke was that the alarm clock failed to play my custom alarm tone, it instead played some fairly quiet beeping noise. Not good if you rely on the alarms waking you up.
The bugs I would like to see fixed are the gestures as well and the systemUI issue when using the minimum width setting in developer options and the fact that it resets after every reboot. Ive never had a camera issue with my device so I'm not sure if it's just related to something you have installed or just a glitch as I factory reset mine after I got it. Double tap to wake would be nice also.
What's buggy about Nova Launcher? It's working perfectly on my end.

Double tap to wake is a good one...
Nova Launcher - when swiping up to go to the home screen, most of the time it actually goes to the recent tasks. But I thought others that didn't use gestures had alot more issues?
I will clear data and cache on the camera app and see if that does any thing.... Possibly its the Line app I use for video chatting as that uses the camera alot.

Install OnePlus gestures from the Play Store (it's cheap) and use that. It will override the Huawei bottom gestures. You'll still have the Huawei side gestures though.

1. They won't change it. This is why the have a super charger for the car.
2. Never had a single camera issue.
3. Nova works like a champ. Uninstall stock launcher via ADB. Install fluid gestures from store, ZERO problems.
4. Use Fluid Gestures from play store.
5. You can change the background killing in development settings. To be less aggressive.
6. Won't happen. Have to find a workaround.

Fluid Gestures is indeed better than OnePlus Gestures...
1. A Car supercharger wont work with Android Auto, I can't imagine this is intentional as with any generic wall charger and cable I get about 2 amp charge rates.
Thanks a bunch for the Fluid Gestures. I always swiped to the home screen.

I was finally able to get ADB working and grant Fluid Gesture the capability to remove the navigation bar, however what I notice is that any time my keyboard is on screen (Swiftkey) the navigation buttons show up at the bottom again.
Are you guys seeing this too?
EDIT: I found the option to disable this in Fluid Gestures!
Set the system navigation to gestures. Fluid over rides it. No more navbar and perfect working gestures

Unfortunately that doesn't work. The Huawei gestures still run and work. If I swipe in from the right edge up high above the Fluid Gestures region the Huawei gesture does kick off unfortunately.
But I am able to disable the Huawei gestures completely and this is now working good. Especially since with Fluid I can disable only the left gesture, which make sliding out the Google Play drawer from the left work great now without closing the app.

While you're on your PC using adb I would also disable the Huawei launcher and any other apps you don't use. I got rid of about 60 apps that I don't use, most of them were Huawei ones like email, calendar, dialer, contacts etc.

It disables the apps. Just remove the launcher and the small Huawei things like email or whatever you don't use. You can leave everything else to be safe.
I'd like to see some camera updates.
The portrait mode for both the front and rear cameras are subpar. They don't perform as well as the GCam found on the 6T, let alone the actual GCam on Pixel phones.
I'm also experiencing Bluetooth issues with my headphones. They'll connect but audio will be significantly chopped up and delayed. I have to disconnect them and reconnect sometimes, and last time I had to unpair them.
Also would like to see better use of screen real estate. It looks bad having 5 quick setting tiles per row on such a big phone. 6 or even 7 would look great.

They are off by default, It's under System Navigation.
Just leave Three-key navigation on and the system won't do gestures, then in fluid you do the ADB permissions to enable it to hide the Huawei bar.
UPDATE
So after using the phone for a while now, I'd like to update my original list of things that need addressing....
1. The constant crashing with the camera appears to have been fixed with a factory reset, so that is now fixed!
2. With Fluid Gestures it seems we have a decent work around for gesture controls with 3rd party launchers.
3. Less aggressive background task killing. I still have things once in a while that don't notify me on time with messages. When I open the app then the notifications come right in, this tells me the app is getting killed in the background. (Happens most frequently with the messaging app "Line")
4. I'd still really like some sort of notification icon on the screen with the always on screen, but I guess that's not a huge deal.
5. Really the only major thing is the USB charging at super slow speeds from my laptop or in the car. 200ma is just way too slow and is not like any other phone charging from the same sources.

Do you have the width setting in developer options on something other than the default? I noticed the camera crashed a lot when I had it set to 600 dp. Now I left it back to the default of 423 dp (text and screen at smallest settings). Icons and screen settings are still too big for me but everything is working fine.
Praying for root soon.

Hi guys,
I have the Note 10 plus and my wife bought last week the note 10 lite.
The lite have a circle around blinking around the front camera and the plus don't have this.
I searched everywhere and din't find an answer about what is that....
Any help?!
Did you buy the 10 lite used? I have a 10lite with aod notify installed it shows a ring around camera for notifications. So if you bought it used maybe its installed. Other than that not sure. Camera also has a lighted ring when you switch between front camera and rear camera, but its white.

No. It's brand new.
And I have the AOD notify in my Note 10 plus.
It's like a sensor. And just happens with the screen on.
The animation around the front camera appears when you are set to face unlock.

same thing
Same situation here, it has nothing to do with face unlock or notification system, tried everything, always the same thing. Its like popping up around front camera every 5-6 seconds when on lock screen, and sometimes when scrolling through certain apps. Maybe some kind of camera-cut-out-pixels protection? Its an odd software behavior without any explanation from Samsung.
Maybe your smart stay is turned on, try to disable it under Motion and Gestures in the settings.
It appears during a video call too, and looks like a larger circle, like that one the other samsung products.
Also sry, for being off topic, i wanted to know how is your s pen working, because the nib of mine feels a little loose.
It is as @j.canlas mentioned. Smart Stay is tuned on, it checks if you are facing directly on the screen or not (to lock the display). I also kept on searching for what it was when the device was new to me, it bothered me a lot.
You can disable/enable it under Settings > Advanced Features > Motions and Gestures.

This is the correct explanation for the infrequent circle around the camera.
I'm using Motorola phones now for years and got
used to the Moto Display to show messages and emails without turning on the phone
and turning the flashlight on with the two chopping motions or Twist the wrist twice quickly to open the camera anytime.
But the motos are getting bigger and bigger, so I was looking for something more compact and found the Pixel 4a.
Is there a chance to have theses moto features on a Pixel?

Also a long time moto user. Displaying emails/messages on the lock screen is a native Android (not Moto) security feature that you can toggle on/off. Pixel 4a camera can be launched via double click of power button, similar to many other phones. Double chop flashlight toggle is a Moto specific action; I do miss that. At present I'm engaging flashlight by swiping down notifications and tapping the flashlight quick action icon...even when locked. Seems easy enough.

There's already lots of those options for the 2xl depending on which ROM you use. Too bad the 4a didn't get active edge. It's a nice feature if you remember to use it.

OnePlus has a screen off gesture setting (draw a V on the screen) which was excellent. I'm looking for Magisk or EdXposed module that would use a gesture for flashlight but haven't seen anything.
This might work:

Tried that... can't get it to work. It is able to detect my double twist, I can feel the vibration, but then camera won't launch (I set the action to launch camera). Apart from that, it is hard to get it to detect the gesture, compared to the smoothness on Motorola phones (I have had quite a few!)
My last phone is HTC U11, which has edge sense, so easy to launch the camera and taking photos with squeeze.
Now on Pixel 4a, I am making myself to get used to the power button double tab to launch cam, and volume button to take photos. Not as smooth but doable...
Is it maybe possible to install moto action from the apk-file on a Pixel?
Hi all,
Recently got the watch 4 and this has been mind boggling me since the day i got it.
Is there any way to have Google Maps update the location on the watch with the screen of on the phone?
Navigation works fine, but as soon as i turn off the screen on the phone to put it my pocket, navigation stops updating on the watch. I guess it also stops updating on the phone as the screen is off.
I have tried several things, give location access at all time for maps on both phone and watch. Also removed any battery restrictions or power saving features for maps. Also checked the sleep lists in device care on the phone, but maps is nowhere to be found there at all and cant be added.
I did write with Samsung support and they did actually confirm that this is not a feature and that phone screen has to be on/phone unlocked for navigation to keep updating..
Is there any workaround for this at all?
Phone is a a52s 5g and it is already going mental sometimes in the pocket even when locked. God knows how many pocket screenshots I have of emergency dial with endless of numbers input.
Thats most likely a samsung/oneui problem rather than android's/watches fault.
Location updates perfectly (tho with a bit of delay) with my redmi note 7
Yes I believe so to, so maybe it was better to post this at the a52 forums. Just thought maybe someone was in the same boat as me here.
Been a happy xiaomi user for years, why did i jump on the galaxy bandwagon now
