This is really wierd. Hope someone can help.
I bought an unlocked LG Optimus G E971 phone in Toronto, Canada this May. Inserting a Rogers and Fido SIM card was perfectly fine and working while I was in Toronto Canada. No SIM network unlock PIN required.
In October, I travelled on vacation to Hong Kong with the same phone that I thought was unlocked. As always, I would buy a local SIM for my unlocked phone. To my surprised, it prompted for a SIM network unlock PIN. I went to a total of 3 carriers, including 3 Telecom, China Mobile and one other (cannot remember the name). All asked for a SIM unlock PIN.
Not believing what had happened, I went back to the shop in Toronto, Canada after returning home. Tried inserting Rogers, Fido, Bell and AT & T SIM card, all worked perfectly.
My question is, could this be a region lock? Like the Samsung Galaxy Note 3?
Anyone has similar experience to share?

Probably.
Region locking or maybe that your phone did not have the right baseband? I dont know. My phone had a similar problem, it displayed roaming in the native country I was.
If you find something about it, please do post back, ok. I am very curious to this issue.
You need to unlock the phone from your carrier in order to user unlocked sim on your mobile

I can use both Fido/Rogers and Bell. They are different carriers and Fido and Bell are competitors in Canada. My LG Optimus G E971 is manufacture unlocked meaning its brand new and unlocked when I bought it from the shop. I don't buy locked phones from carriers and I don't need an unlock code. Been buying and using manufacture unlocked GSM phones in the past 10 years, never had an issue. Not a believer of locked phones and it's ripped off plans in North America.

The LG Optimus G E971 is quad band and it has HSDPA 850/1900/2100. I matched this to my Samsung Omnia II (I8000) which has HSDPA 900/1900/2100. My Omnia II is manufacture unlocked and is usable in Hong Kong (Asia) without an issue. Not a phone tech person but I would assume my LG Otpimus G E971 is quad band and is useable in Hong Kong.
I didn't know there was a section for LG Otpimus G, I have also posted my replies here:

Hi there guys!
I've bought a Moto G5 model XT1676 a few days ago, and it doesn't work with LTE connectivity on my country (Argentina)
I've asked the carrier about it, and they told me that my mobile does not work on the same frequencies of LTE antennas.
I knew that on some mobiles you could "unlock" this unsupported frequencies, could it be possible on Moto G5?
Thanks!
Hi, I'm using the LM-V500N Korean KT version in the UK on the VODAFONE network. Everything else appears to be working ok except for 5G.
It doesn't connect to the 5G service, only 3G and LTE showing.
Does anyone have any help or suggestions on what could be wrong?
My SIM and 5G coverage is fine as I can use my SIM in a Samsung Galaxy S10 5G and it works fine on 5G.
Currently only EE sells the V50 in the UK, so I was wondering if the V50 is only compatible with the EE 5G service in the UK?
Ok since nobody is able to help answer, my conclusion is that my V50 is 5G locked specifically to KT carrier in Korea.
Only 4G LTE is working fine in UK.
So I guess 5G won't work until I can reflash the phone to European firmware?
Could this unlock the 5G ?
Thanks
where did you get the phone and do you get volte or wificalling..also how loud the phone gets trough wired jack.thanks

Yes, crossflashing is the key, but we don't have a working lgup right now. Let's hope we will.
just sound tested a lg v50 in uk today and is better than my htc 10 volume wise...i think i will go for korean version from wonda as its not worth paying EE 1800 over 2 years.SHOULD I PUSH THE BUY BUTTON OR NOT?
I'll recommend Korean version as it's camera has features like super steady mode which european I don't think it has. Also updates. Yes lg updates are very frequently on Korean. Sometimes twice a month.
In the meantime maybe we get working the 5G. Or maybe not.... For me 5g is not that important. The audio quality is. And the camera, it wasn't in the past, but now that I'm spoiled, it is.
dont really care either about 5g.....not worth price vs coverage...but audio is a MUST.Curious thing is that a month ago i listened to a v50 in an EE shop ,but today a different shop and the audio loudness was twice as the previous one.

By the way the bank aplications work on korean version.Especially barclays aplication or any banks app?
Yes all my banking Apps work in the UK on my V50 Korean KT version. I've not had any issues.
I use Natwest, Virgin Money, Nationwide.
The only app that did not work properly was Sky Go, but this is also now fixed with the latest update I received 2 weeks ago. V500N11r

Where did you bought your phone from?
I bought my V50 on ebay from Korean seller Funphone-International. The price was very good and converted to less than £370 Inc shipping.
I really want tbe 5G to work, so hoping for cross-flash soon as possible.

Hello, I've emailed KT Mobile Service because I was curious if the V500N KT version, which I own too, really locks 5G in a way in their phones and here is their answer:
My question: How can I use the 5G network in my country, Portugal, with my network (NOS). Is it possible, do you have to unlock the 5G network?
-Answer: Originally LG V50 is unlocked also KT doesn't have Carrier lock.
If your provider has 5G service you can use 5G but if they don't, you can not use it.
To check your service, you need to contact LG or your mobile provider.
I don't know why you can't use 5G in your network, but it's not because of KT network.
most of the countries require to have the 5g phones registered to their network and also you need a 5g plan.
Thanks for helping.
I'm on Vodafone Network with 5G service enabled, but the V50 still doesn't work on 5G service. A really mystery.
I've put my SIM card into a different Samsung 5G phone and it works with 5G service showing, so my SIM is ok.
Hi, I have done some more investigations and I used the hidden service menu 5457#*500# to check which radio bands my v500n was using.
Under the Multi Band Selection menu I can see all the LTE bands up to B41 listed and selected, however there is no B78 band in the list.
Does that mean my v500n does not support B78 band which I think is the Vodafone 5G band in the UK?
Can anyone else check their service menu and confirm if B78 band is present?
Thanks
korean is 5g locked ....was confirmed on telegram group
Ok thanks
Is that the reason why LTE band B78 is not appearing in the menu list?
Previous answer from Danix004 is saying 5G is not locked and confirmed by email from KT.
-Answer: Originally LG V50 is unlocked also KT doesn't have Carrier lock
If 5G is truely locked then did anyone on Telegram know how to unlock 5G on the Korean KT version?
Thanks
cant be done until root is possible
Ok I received the official Android 10 update yesterday and my phone is now at version V500N20b
Working really smooth with all the new features.
But still no 5G.

I remember there are certain china phones dont work with vodafone B20 4g band.
Hi, can anyone tell me if the Sprint V50 will work in the UK with 5G band support?

Please update us if you happen to be in a 5g coverage area. I suspect that the 5g ( and 4g) bands have been disable except sprint's network (like the 4g networks were on other phones like v30 ).
Can you access the hidden service menu and confirm which radio bands are showing as available on the Sprint V50?
Hidden menu code is 5457#*500# on the Korean version.

That doesn't work, probably a different code
there is an app called Netmonster in the playstore. It may work with you lg v50 to see the networks available. Once you install and run the app, in the lower right you will see an option for phone info. Once clicked, it should open the network settings. From there you may be able to tell.
Sprint v50
How is the, 4g lte, mms, sms and general data working?

5g bands can be used worldwide according to LG UK
Here is a reply I received from LG UK regarding this very issue.
Good afternoon,
Thank you for getting in touch with us. Firstly a 5g enabled phone from another country can work in all other countries that have 5g available. And at the moment there wasn't a market in the UK for the LG V50 that's why it wasn't released here. Regarding using unlocked phones from another country in the UK you can certainly do that and connect a network from the UK to the unlocked phone. In addition, you need to be aware if anything happens to the phone, we wouldn't be able to help resolve it because its warranty isn't covered in the UK in order to get help you'll have to speak to the LG USA.

That is a very vague answer from the LG customer service. Without listing any details of the 5g frequencies used, how would he be able to support his claim about the compatibility of the device on 5g ? The US 5g networks vary greatly on each of the 4 major providers t-mobile, at&t, verizon, and sprint. And euro/asia utilize a completely different bandwidth than north america. I'm hoping that LG did include 3500 band that is widely used in europe/asia , but that might be wishful thinking.

This is very true and I couldn't find a good enough answer as I was going to purchase the USA version and have it sent to the UK, I eventually got the LMV500em European version as I couldn't find a good enough answer to the 5g banding issues.

Also another issue people are facing is that in the Korean models 5g is defined to only work on a certain carrier. Not sure if this is true for the Sprint model. We should be able to change it once we can root and stuff which will probably happen around mid April - may/june

Hi
Looking at all the answers I'm still not sure if the sprint LG v50 works with 5G. I'm considering to buy the LG V50 but I'm completely lost with all the information.
Could you confirm again if the Sprint version works with 5G and also if NFS works in the UK? I'm also on Vodafone.
Thank you in advance.

This is a growing concern for users of LG V50 refurbished from Aliexpress. Any help please?
what is tmobile going to do with all the people who own the Sprint LG V50 (LM-V450PM)?
do we get a free upgrade to a tmobile 5g phone since the sprint v50 5g is not compatible?
I called and they offered a Samsung S20 free lease. You would think a deal from a LG V50 for a LG V60 but I guess that wouldn't make sense.
can you explain how you were able to do that or who you spoke with because i called and asked and they did not offer such and told me they never heard of that or offer such a promotion.
tmobile put a sim card in to test the 5g and it works (at least the korean version 450 lg v50 but all of them should). the rep told me initially, the 5g may not have had the necessary coverage in bandwidth but tmobile is starting to open up more bandwidths as 5g becomes more available and more common. i am in a heavy 5g area covered by tmobile.
I have the Sprint V50 and I can confirm 5g is working on T-mobile.

No, it does not There is a difference between showing 5G in the notification bar and actually working 5G.

I used the LTE discovery app, and it just shows EARFCN (LTE band unknown.)
What is a little confusing is that the specs here https://www.gsmarena.com/lg_v50_thinq_5g-9607.php
Shows the phone supports 260 and 261. which from what I understand T-mobile uses.
I can confirm when I first got the device, all I got was LTE. Not too long ago all of a sudden I did get the little 5g logo on my device.
That is a bit confusing.
