Best ROM for dark mode customisation? - Xiaomi Poco F2 Pro (Redmi K30 Pro) Questions & Ans

Hi,
I'm looking to flash a custom ROM as the Android 11 update has broken Nova Launcher with Gestures. One thing I *really* love in MIUI12 though is the ability to toggle individual apps out from forcing a dark mode. I don't see much documentation on dark modes in the various ROMs - do any have this toggle per-app. I'm aware of DARQ but that's an opt-in (fine if that's the only option).
Also, what's the maximum charge rate on AOSP without the Xiaomi bespoke charging protocol?

Do you know if the Android 11 version of this works nicely with gestures and 3rd party launchers?

MIUI International version or other ROM which support gesture and full screen?

I flashed my Xiaomi Mix 2S with Android P developer preview verison the second day after I purchased it, because I am a heavy user of Google apps and I like the clean stock Android ROM (used to own three Nexus phones). Now I am aware that Xiaomi won't provide stock Android Pie ROM, I guess I should starting looking for alternatives (which provide security patches constantly).
When I tried the MIUI Chinese version (I am living in China now), I actually liked its gesture (not the one in stock Android version) and full screen features. Stock Android P/Pie leaves a black strip at the bottom for gesture navigation which doesn't look as pretty as MIUI. And MIUI's gesture (slide from anywhere on the screen) is more convenient in my opinion. So I could change to Android-Pie-based MIUI (international version of course because I want to use Google) after Xiaomi releases it. But my biggest concern is, does the international version also collect and upload user's data like the Chinese version? I try to avoid those kind of apps as much as I can (I only install apps from Play Store) and always disable unnecessary permissions in the apps.
Or, is there any other ROMs (hopefully Android Pie based version would be published quickly) which is suitable for Mix 2S's full display?
I'd recommend you MIUI builds from xiaomi.eu
They include a combination of features from china and international roms and exclude the nasty stuff from both.

I'll try that, after the Android Pie version is released, along with some anti spyware app that some people have suggested to see if the nasty stuff was indeed excluded. Thank you very much!

Why Aren't Custom Roms Devs Doing This?

So far, I have installed over 9 custom roms, and none of them has Dark Mode for Messages & Phone apps. (except OOS port)
devs have been focusing on dark theme all across the device, yet not a single rom has dark messages & phone app.
And no, downloading Phone & messages from google play isn't a solution.
Is it actually difficult to implement?

Of the 9 custom ROMs you have tried, did you try flashing Pixel Experience? The stock Messages app can be set to Dark Mode. The Phone app automatically becomes dark when you set dark mode on PE.
I think it's also implemented in other custom ROMs, and MIUI has it in their beta.
A simple use of your Google-fu will lead you to Substratum, which themes ROMs
Also, devs have their own timetables that we should respect. If the frameworks they work with don't allow it, then you should probably politely ask and wait for them. Before asking them if it is difficult, ask yourself if you have Google-d enough or used the search bar at XDA more.
Please check your custom ROMs CAREFULLY. Or maybe try Pixel Experience.
Hope that helps.
Did you even flash GApps?

Yes I have. Great effort by the devs but definitely the worst experience a user will have if they want any type of customization.
I came to the Poco from Pixel 2 xl and I had the pixel for only month and sold it because of its terrible UI. why? because what kind of software makers take a step back when improving a software? for as far as i remember, the recents clear button has always been .25 second away from clicking the recents button. But Pixel UI went out of their way to make the clear button at the end of the list and you have to swipe through all your recent apps to hit that button! OOS and MIUI kept the button on the same place where it was in Oreo, except Pixel!

I know about substratum but why would a user who installs a custom rom need a third-party app to theme stock messaging and phone apps when they should be dark by default when enabling dark mode all cross the device?

I do respect their timetables. And I have no idea whether the framework allows, hence why I started this thread to have input from different people.
Why do you sound annoyed by me asking if it's difficult? you know a developer can come to this thread and literally say yes its difficult and that would be enough to know why the idea is not being implemented.
And trust me, I googled enough and used the search bar.

In the context of the Poco F1 (or any other phone that is not the Pixel 1/2/3/3a and XLs for that matter), Pixel Experience is a custom ROM for these reasons:
Pixel Experience is not a GSI image that we just put in Pocophone. It also has its code based off Lineage with Pixel sources too (and with CAF, Qualcomm-specific code).
Try flashing MIUI stock straight on top of PE. You'll see lots of errors, simply because the frameworks are different. Stock ROM for Poco is MIUI. You can try checking the Poco out of the box.
Expounding on the topic, xiaomi.eu is considered a custom ROM because it has system level changes for the removal of ads and Chinese localization (apart from the fact that it is deodexed). If xiaomi.eu is a custom ROM in itself, then by what claim can we say that PE is non-custom?
Please have a look at this changelog for the CAF version of PE (I think AOSP has it too) : https://github.com/PixelExperience/..._caf_beryllium-9.0-20190505-2106-OFFICIAL.txt
Of course, you might have a different view of what "seems custom", but the vast difference of the PE ROM from the MIUI ROM speaks for itself that it is indeed custom (BTW, there's a high chance that ROMs that require you to flash them through TWRP is custom).
My apologies for a rather harsh attitude earlier. I'm here to inform and respectfully agree or disagree with what I know. Have a good day.

Legit concerns. I personally like how Huawei implemented EMUI and OOS on Oneplus. However, I did answer the mere question of the existence of a dark mode, as the Messages and Phone apps on PE is bundled as its default.
I will concede that Android Messaging apps are a mess, whether through their inconsistencies and their UI. But we can only hope for better things.

use substratum
I don't really care about miui theme or stock aosp themes since always on custom rom with subs since they can't themes third party apps
now i'm happy with aosip+ pitch black substratum for everuthing

The aim of LOS is near stock android. The stock android is just AOSP, if you use aosp, google can't make money from it as it's open source. If you use their Google services they can make money. If stock android's Messaging app and Phone app has the good features (dark theme, call screening etc) like Google's Messaging app or phone app, every one will prefer that and google might face a loss. As los is based on aosp (for some extent) you can't have dark mode there. Each and every custom ROM is based on LOS, so no you can't have dark mode. You can either use PE which has Google's messenging and calling app or use substratum theme engine.
I'm not 100% sure. If I made a mistake please correct it. Thanks ¯\_ (ツ) _/¯
Have you tried to use Google Phone and Messages apps? I'm using them on lineageos and they has dark mode
Just use these apps.
if you're already flashing gapps, why dont just enable Google's Phone and Message app since they have dark mode and just a lot better than any of the custom rom's counterpart? And their dark mode is not tied to the ROM, ever.

[ROOT][APP][9.0+] Android 10 Launcher (+ gestures, feed)

Android 10 Launcher for Android 9.0+
Google has made an interesting change on Pie release: moving the recents app screen, along with the (was new) swipe up gesture to the stock launcher. Following that change, the Lawnchair team has released the QuickSwitch Magisk Module which allows you to change the "stock" launcher to a supported one that you prefer.
So let's get to the point. A week ago Google has released Android 10 along with its new, improved gesture navigation. It's much better than the gestures on Android Pie. Today, I'm happy to announce that you can get the new gesture navigation on Android Pie too with this port and the QuickSwitch Magisk Module.
Features
Video preview
- Clean stock Launcher3 base
- Android Q gesture navigation
- Swipe down for notification drawer
- Dark theme
- Google Feed (dark theme now included), YAY!
- Simple icon packs support (no dynamic icons/icon masking)
Installation
1. Install the QuickSwitch Magisk Module
2. Download and install the Launcher APK
3. Open the QuickSwitch app, select the launcher and reboot
4. Set it as the default launcher
5. Open home settings, select "Developer options" and then enable gestures in there
Download
Unified build
- View attachment Q_Launcher3-v1.3-debug.apk
- View attachment Q_Launcher3-v1.2-debug.apk
For Android Pie
- View attachment Q_Launcher3-Pie-v1.1-debug.apk
- View attachment Q_Launcher3-Pie-debug.apk
For Android 10
- View attachment Q_Launcher3-10-v1.1-debug.apk
- View attachment Q_Launcher3-10-debug.apk
Notes:
- This launcher requires the QuickSwitch Magisk Module to function properly. It should work as a normal launcher alone but that's untested.
- Unfortunately, the back gesture is a part os SystemUI and can't be achieved in this port, but you can use apps such as Fluid NG to replicate it.

Thank you, really nice!
It's not working for me. I've done all the steps. The name of the launcher linked here is "Quickstep" in my default apps settings. And choosing that makes it so I can't even close any app, it just reopens the app immediately. (like there is no home screen).
And I guess you don't mean the lawnchair settings? I thought that at first but there is no gestures option in the developer settings in lawnchair (latest beta).
Working great in Havoc 2.8 This should be your new grand project. I'm using lawnchair 2 and that's awesome.
Works flawlessly on my Xperia Z3 Carbon 7.0 Pie.
It would be nice with a dark background option.
Nice work, mate.
Would be great if you add this in lawnchair

Although untested, it should work as this launcher is the same one that stock Android 10 provides with only a few changes. Just make sure you download the one for Android 10 and it should be fine.

Does the Pixel launcher from Android 10 come with new gesture animations, and are you planning to port it?
Also, for the people who have been using this launcher, what is your method of replicating Android 10's Navigation bar? I've tried Fluid NG and the Home button doesn't seem to work when Navigation bar is hidden. I'm on Xperia X running Lineage OS 16 (9.0).

Yeah, as I said, when I choose it as my launcher, it doesn't work at all. The phone behaves like there's no homescreen. When I try to exit settings, or any app at all, it just reopens that app immediately. It closes the app, shows an empty wallpaper and then opens the app within 1/10 of a second.

This is so good. The animations are smooth and work as intended.
I'd be great if google now page can be added to the left.
And also, the bottom google search bar is also missing. Hope that gets added too!
Overall first impressions, a fantastic port!!

Unrooted devices have no means to change Android's quickstep provider, which means you are stuck with default recents provider and navigation gestures.
Which, you know, defeats the purpose.
When I try to select is as the quickstep provider on OOS OB1 Q then I get an error message "Error: Boot script failled"

Question Anyone have a fix for 3rd party launchers and gestures enabled?

My current device is a Redmi Note 5 and I've set it up to my liking using Nova Launcher under MIUI 11 and found out Android 11 as well as Android 10 don't work well with third party launchers.
Today I put in my request for bootloader unlock For the POCO X3 Pro, so I'll have to wait a week for anything interesting, I intend to keep dailying the Note 5 untill the timer runs out.
I've seen a few solutions, but nothing specific for our device.
Is anyone else in the same boat as me?
You can try the latest releases of Lawnchair launcher. They work well with Android 10. I'm using Lawnchair with Corvus OS (Android 10) and it is working fine. Now, as for Android 11, there is no solution yet. Lawnchair has developed a new beta release, but it is buggy... The only thing we can do is....wait!!!

I never gave lawnchair a chance, it came stock on a ROM I used, but installed nova over it immediately. Guess I'll give it a try soon. Sounds like it's one of the launchers with the most active development, so I may owe it to myself to take it out for a spin.
This helped me:

Question MIUI dialer and contacts for Mi 12

Hello; This is my fisrt experience with Mi 12 as I moved from Redmi 4 prime (what a jump ), but I noticed that xiaomi has integrated the Google phone dialer instead of MiUi dialer which used to be much better in my older phone.
After reading about that I knew that Xiaomi wants to agree with google about their ploicy not to use manufacturer dialer apps, but I heared that we can flash the dialer and the contacts like what we do with Gapps, is that trure? or the only solution would be the "Indonesian ROM"?
Thanks for help with that

These roms are custom roms, for your device based on chinese roms.
Two roms: Stable and Weekly, the latter receiving the latest features and updated once a week.
You will need to unlock the bootloader to install them, the warranty still works.
Normally the warranty stops if you install a custom rom.
In the event of a brick at the software level, you can always recover the phone and in the event of a brick at the hardware level with a custom rom, many have reported that Xiaomi had carried out the repairs without problems.
These roms have playstore certified with many modifications and options.(currently Miui 14 A13).
If you have a Chinese version, you cannot lock the bootloader on another version of rom, you will have to root the phone and use Magisk to have the play store certified.
