Salfish OS or Ubuntu touch port for Mi Pad 1 - General Questions and Answers

Hello developers,
I am using Mi pad 1 since its release and noticed one thing that is the manufacturer just launched the device and then forgot about it, the hardware of this devices was beastly at its time of launch but because of lack of good software and software optimisation most of people just forgot this device. There are several custom ROMs for this device and most of them are good but non of them is perfect. Every custom ROM has several bugs which make me feel to go and use the stock ROM which is based on android 4.4 and very laggy.
I think this can be changed if a Linux ROM will be ported for this device because Linux ROM are light and i think a big 8 inch display can be best used by these ROM.
Kindly think about this and do something, once I tried by myself to port the Ubuntu touch by watching some tutorials but i don't know about coding and several other things which i think are necessary for it.
(Sorry for grammatical mistakes or bad English)

You can install Ubuntu 14.04 with Smoke 24.1 kernel. Only Bluetooth, synaptic touch doesn't work.

[Q] Plasma Active on the tf101 ?

Hey there,
does anyone know how to install Plasma Active on the tf101 and can give me (and others too) a little instruction ?
I tried to install it by myself but atm I have no success
greets
x86
I would very much be interested in this, too. This is what i found out already:
- It is possible in general: h**p://community.kde.org/Plasma/Active/Installation#Install_Plasma_Active_on_ARM_Systems
"The Mer project creates a Plasma Active MMC Image which is build for the armv7hl target devices like the ARM Tegra 2 tablet."
- h**p://merproject.com/
That's how far i've come. Anyone else?
The steps for setting up plama on the TF101 are a little bit of a pain. It requires you to use the CrOS kernel and u-boot to get working properly.

+1 for this!
I would love to see plasma active on the Transformer.
Won't the steps be pretty much the same as described for ubuntu in the wiki:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/How_to_install_Ubuntu_on_an_Asus_EEEPad_Transformer
but replacing the ubuntu.img with a plasma active image?
What methods have you tied x86?

The instructions for that are found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202541
But I guess it should be possible to follow one of the ubuntu guides as well just change the image to one of your own choice. At least I will try that when I get my tf101 docking station and basyskom releases a more stable version of their plasma active image.
http://share.basyskom.com/contour/Deployment/latest-basyskom-plasma-active-tegra2-mer.html
I let you know if I succeed, but someone else probably does it before me anyway.
Hey guys ! It's now possible by Ubuntu ! I've installed ubuntu on my TF101, with tegra sound etc working on 12.04, and just installed Plasma Active package that installed all environement and now running in my tf 101 !

[Q] Aircrack gui for Hisense Sero 7 Pro

After doing some research on this Tablet, I have found out that it has a bcm4330 broadcom wifi chipset. Basically what I want to do is enable monitor mode and packet injecting. Some of the work has been done thanks to these guys who have rewritten the firmware to enable monitor mode http://bcmon.blogspot.com/
And this guy for a good gui [URL="http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2233282"]http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2233282
Can someone help me get it to work on this device? I have installed the aircrack gui app and put the firmware in it. But I don't know how to get the module which is required by the app. So what I am asking for is someone to help me by either telling me how to compile the kernel with the module or else do it for me. I have done some looking around but I have not found a user friendly way to compile the kernel to get this to work. I only got this tablet a week ago and I want to learn about it and use it to it's fullest potential. I have already rooted it.
You can download the aircrack gui app from the second link and the firmware from the first.
Thanks in advance.
Sero 7 Pro Has Working Monitor Mode, Aircrack, and Reaver!
When it comes to handheld penetration testing, I still adore my Nokia N900, but that is starting to change ever since I realized that it was possible to get monitor mode on other more modern devices using various Broadcom Wifi chipsets. I recently managed to get monitor working on my Sero 7 Pro tablet. I have the DoPa v1.1 ROM installed, and I used the bcmon.apk from bcmon.blogspot.com/‎, which can be downloaded at https://code.google.com/p/bcmon/‎. Android development is certainly not my primary focus, but after view the post above, and craving a Nexus 7 PwnPad, I couldn't resist giving it a try.

Android x86 4.4 KitKat available and working (except for WiFi)

EDIT 2: See post #21 for an update. From my research, it appears that WiFi will never work in Android on the Surface Pro.
----------------------------------
EDIT 1: See post #13 for an update.
----------------------------------
Looks like it has some WiFi fixes for tablets. And since I'm hating the Win8 OS (for my purposes), I'm going to give this a shot.
Don't see anyone else on the forum that has tried this new 4.4.
I'm downloading it now.
http://www.android-x86.org/releases/releasenote-4-4-rc1
Key Features
The 4.4-RC1 release is based on the Android 4.4.2 (KitKat-MR1 release). We have fixed and added x86 specified code to let the system runs smoothly on x86 platforms, especially for netbooks or tablets. The key features contain
Integrate the ffmpeg as the stagefright-plugins to support much more multimedia files. Now we can play HD and full HD videos in apps.
Use the latest longterm stable kernel 3.10.30 with more drivers enabled. Most netbooks can run Android-x86 in the native resolution.
OpenGL ES hardware acceleration for AMD Radeon and Intel chipsets (not include the PowerVR chips).
Enhance the installer to support upgrade from previous versions (since ics-x86). The text based GUI installer supports ext3/ext2/ntfs/fat32 filesystems.
KitKat style lanucher (Launcher3).
Support Multi-touch, Wifi, Audio, Bluetooth, G-sensor and Camera.
Simulate sdcard by internal storage.
External usb drive and sdcard are auto mounted to /storage/usbX on plugging.
Support hybrid mode of iso images.
Multi-user support (max 8).
Support Ethernet (DHCP only).
Support VM like Qemu and VMware
.

I didn't say it worked on anything.
And RT is a definite "no". If it does work, it's Surface Pro only.
Bummer, 4.4 doesn't work for me.
I can run the Androidx86 4.3 without any problems.
But the 4.4 just does a kernel panic whenever I try to boot to it.
And there is no use running 4.3 since WiFi doesn't work on it.

Surface RT cannot boot any alternative operating system besides Windows RT and its 8.1 update.
Looks like the problem may be fixed with the next release.

Probably.
Looks like an efivar issue.
I also encountered efivar issue on other device.
It's probably buggy.
The option is not enabled in 4.3 kernel.
Will disable it in next release.
Thank you for the report.

Maybe if a developer here knows how to disable this "efivar" in the kernel, they could recompile the kernel for us Surface Pro users.
Do not know how long it will be before Android-x86 releases the next version.
Eddie, which installation tut did you use to get 4.3 running on the Pro? I looked at the Android-x86 EFI post and there seems to be a couple on there.
Also have had you boticed any sluggishness when running apps? I'm specifically interested in MCPE to play with my kids, but any info would be great.

I got it installed but did not use any of the guides.
I'd already wiped all original partitions from my hard disk.
So I was booting directly from USB stick.
I created an Ubuntu USB stick using the latest nightly of Ubuntu.
Then added an android folder and tossed all the Android 4.3 files into it.
And then modified the grub file using one online method or another. Don't remember which.
I didn't stick with it though because WiFi doesn't work (known issue) and therefore it's useless to me.
So, I can't help with any usage reports. Sorry.
Can we install the latest Android X86 on the Surface Pro 1?
Sony Vaio Flip 14A
I have installed newest version on vaio 14A and almost it is working perfectly . I installed it Sandisk mini usb 16GB .Graphic performance is better than Note 3 ( I have used several benchmark ) . I couldn't installed it on the device's SSD disk . Because it didn't see it . Biggest problem is power consumption and it is very high . Touch screen is very responsive . Auto rotation is not working ( I am using manual rotation) .
Okay, Android 4.4 is now "working" on the Surface Pro thanks to this thread:
https://groups.google.com/forum/#!topic/android-x86/GrPdnpa6XBM
BUT,,,, WiFi is still not working. Bummer.
Anyone know how to get a WiFi driver for the Surface Pro to work in Android? We could always recompile now that this is really the only outstanding issue.
I remembered that Android-IA 4.2.2 has working WiFi on the Surface Pro.
But I can't find the source for it, only the install files.
We can try to get the WiFi driver from it for the 4.4.

Rather than trying to extract the driver from the rerede build, why not just use the driver from the official linux kernel (kernel.org) located in drivers\net\wireless\mwifiex. Im a bit of a noob so I don't know how to do this or if it would even work or not.
Also, I tested out the rerede build and it is quite unstable. Wifi/sound doesn't work half the time, freezes after going in standby mode.

Announcing Sailfish for the HTC Desire HD
What is Sailfish?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sailfish_OS
This is not Android!
This should be thought of as a development experiment. It may be useful if you are a developer and want to write/port apps the the Sailfish operating system. It is not an end-user product, however, if you wish to experiment and try something different then feel free!
Please do not contact Jolla Care or Jolla Developer Care, as this is not the Jolla phone

Special Thanks

Installation
Make sure you have an up-to-date recovery. I used 4ext touch. Philz recovery doesnt have the required tar command.
Format/wipe etc
For version < pgz11 Install the latest CM10.1 and make sure it works
For pgz11 onwards Install CM 12.1 nightly 20120131 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-desire-hd/development/rom-cyanogenmod-12-1-nightlies-t3070621
Copy the .zip to the SDCard and install it. The installation script take a little time.
First Run
On first run you are presented with a language selection, after this time you should be presented with the first-run wizard. Complete as much as possible, but dont try and create a Jolla account as there wont be a network connection (unless you have inserted a sim and by chance it works, I havnt tested that). To get out of the wizard, scroll down because the 'skip' link is off the bottom of the screen.

Bugs
Lots
Several major graphical bugs, such as the keyboard struggling to show and corruption in the windows of minimized apps. This is probably down the the kernel hack I made to get apps to load. (no longer true as of pgz11)
Cellular network is pretty unusable. No audio input! (fixed in pgz13)
Proximity sensor is not working and blanks the screen (note, progress has been made on this)
Mobile data is not working (being worked on) (fixed in pgz13)

Interesting, this is great.
I suggest you post in the right thread for people to see this amazing project you have started.
Sailfish for our device; keep up the good work, will love to see more.
hope it doesn't end here.
That's a great rom, especially if it can work for daily driver. Using the DHD with sailfish and respond as fast as a dual or quad android phone would be great(even if it's not android)
1st I prefer speed/response time
2nd then android (I prefer 1st anyday)
This actually seems pretty cool! The feel I get is that this is miles ahead of Ubuntu Touch when I was working on it. It would be fun to see how awesome this could get with a full development team working on it as their dayjob. After all, this seems to be more suitable for old single-core device than the latest Android versions have been. Great job PiggZ! :good:
Sound is working
Good news peeps, I got sound output working! A new rom will follow in a few days
Ive been using this for the last weeks to allo developing sailfish applications, and for that purpose it is working just fine. Ive not attempted to get the mobile network up yet, but i'll make some enquiries.
Obviously development so moved to the right place.
OP, please make sure you have the ability to post in this thread. If not, please let me know.

Ubuntu Touch porting - where to post?

The other problems I manage locally - but I want to start a discussion thread soon, since I am convinced to be able to push out a test build soon. I want to involve more people into this, thereby generating more possible solutions for problems.
In case you are interested, the phone boots already correctly, kernel is fine without errors, Android container starts also without errors. Ubuntu´s init/upstart is mounting all necessary partitions, and brings up most of the basic services. Currently stuck with GUI since mir/libhybris/unity8 cannot paint on framebuffer or hw composer

Hi,
good to know. We just need to make sure AT&T version does not have too much difference from the international one. Can you dedicate it for testing? It does not need data to be wiped normally, since Ubuntu runs off a container in the data partition but you never know...
I am currently stuck with the GUI and tbh I have no idea when and how this will be resolved. Samsung has done a great job with their GPU and Exynos, but our libhybris part does not want to play with it nicely.
Keep you updated!
BR
Actually I use it as my DD but wouldn't mind testing a few ROMs for the gd of the comm.
Aiite then. Patiently waiting for the update.
I have the international version of S3 GT-i9300. It is currently without a working rom, so I need to find time to see if it will boot with an official rom flashed with odin, it currently has an old clockwork mod recovery installed and a lineage os rom that wont boot..
If I get it working again, then I could dedicate it to testing... I would love to have a phone that was pure linux with phone capabilities... then I would no longer need to use google's linux abomination known as android
Hi,
sorry to say but I stopped now every porting activity, since Canonical dropped Ubuntu Touch and we are struggling on all other frontlines to get the community together for continuing the OS.
There will be no new hardware ports in the near future, which I think will be up to 1 year or 2. By that time, also S-III etc are end of life, since its hard to support multiple generations of smartphones with different kernels properly. Im afraid we are too late...
Anyway, contact me if you want to help in other areas of Ubuntu Touch going UBports community

Hi there,
