Hello everyone,
it's a long time I don't do this and I wanted to make sure I do the correct steps.
I would like to try a custom ROM but I want to make sure I can go back to my rooted custom ROM if I want to.
Can you remind me what are the correct steps to do for a nandroid backup so that I can restore the previous ROM please?
I see many guides here, but still unsure if I do it right.
I use TWRP recovery.
Trying to reply by myself, hopefully someone will confirm eventually.
Reboot to TWRP recovery and select micro SD as save location.
Select the following for the backup:
- System image
- Boot
- Data
Chose the name for the backup and swipe right to backup.
The backup will be stored at TWRP -> Backups -> Serial Number -> Backup Folder
Is that correct?
This way I should be able to go back to stock anytime after flashing any ROM I want.
Yes, but you need delete pins, unlock password, fingerprints and etc before backup!

Hello. Currently, I am using RCMix S 2.7 and i thinking this is most stable and great rom for Desire S. I setup my mobile(applications, widgets, settings). However I would like to test new roms. How I can backup my customized software? I did backup in ClockworkMod Recovery and size of my software is 1.05Gb. Is this enough? How to make restore? Do i need to choose only restore or format something first?
Use Google sync for your Contacts and Calendar items (HTC Sync + M$ Outlook is also a good combination but you can use it only on Sense ROMs)
Download and install free Titanium Backup from the Market to backup your applications and settings (you can backup even your homescreen arrangement (all shortcuts and widgets) and restore them in one click. The backup itself is not taking too much space. My advice is when switching to ROM with different Sense/Kernel/Android version do not restore setting, it can mess up your new installation, restore just the apps and take the time to configure everything again.
I also test new roms all the time. My technique of back up is this.
1. contacs = back up using google. sync with your google account.
2. sms = i use 'kAmMa's BackupSMS'
3. Application = I only backup downloaded apps using Astro file manager.
For me titanium back up is a bit complicated.
to restore i always do this order
first use the filemanager in the rom - browse to backup folder and install astro file manager.
than use astro file manager and install all the other application that you back up
than setup google account and your contact will be downloaded automatically from internet.
than restore sms using the kamma's backupsms.
its done. I spend about 30 minutes for this. This is my way of doing things. If you like you can follow this way.
What You thinking about it:
How To: Backup or Restore via Nandroid
Nandroid allows you to create a complete system image of your device and stores it to the SD Card on your phone. Making one is very simple but there are a few prerequisites.
1. A rooted Android phone
2. A custom recovery that supports Nandroid (ie: Amon_RA, ClockworkMod, Etc.)
3. A MicroSD card that has enough space for a system image.
A complete image can range from 75-400 MB.
Please follow this link for instructions: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki...r_via_Nandroid
Ok, I got your point. You want to preserve you current ROM in the way it is now in case that you would like to go back to it.
In this case before restoration you have to follow the same steps like in installation of a new ROM:
Wipe all (system, data, cache)
Restore
Thanks a lot!

If you just want to simply restore one of your previously taken Nandoird backups then there is no need to wipe anything in advance as the restore will overwrite all partitions.
While saying that every time that I've performed a restore for safety's sake I always then wipe cache and dalvik cache before booting the restored ROM.
My GT7+ has the LB2 firmware. I have not seen any copy of this firmware for downloading. Therefore I have been cautious and stick with the stock kernel and FW.
I installed garyd9's CWM and made nandroid backup. I want to try garyd9's custom kernel, but I read the warning on his post about compatibility with some firmwares.
I wonder if I flash his custom kernel and it fails, can I revert back to my stock kernel through nandroid restore?
Thanks.
Nandroid backup is a complete backup of your phone. When we say complete, it means everything on your phone – your apps, data, your current ROM and even the kernel. It is like creating a full system image of your phone that can be restored later, when required. - Restore from a Nandroid Backup via Recovery:
1. The first two steps are same as above. Boot into Recovery and navigate to the Nandroid screen.
2. Select ‘Restore’ to start the process. If you choose the ‘Advanced Restore’ option, you can select which component of the backup to restore – like the boot, system, data or cache. 3. Reboot system. Your system is now restored and is exactly same as the time when the backup was taken.-- Backup and Restore Using ROM Manager:
If you think the above process was easy, backup and restore through ROM Manager is even easier. ROM Manager automates the whole of the above process giving you the option to do these operations with a single touch. Just choose ‘Backup Current ROM’, enter a name for the backup and the phone reboots to start the backup process. There, your backup is complete. To restore, launch the app and select ‘Manage and Restore Backups’. Select the backup that you want restored and ROM Manager will do the rest.
You can delete or rename the backups as well.
Thanks for the reply. Now I feel more comfortable and adventurous.
BTW, I see that there is no copy of the official Samsung LB2 firmware floating around. I do not know how to make a tar file for the firmware / ROM, but would anyone be interested in a nandroid copy of the LB2? I can reset the tablet, go to CWM to save a nandroid copy of the default firmware, then restore my own running copy.

Titanium Backup
Another option for rooted Android

Titanium Backup gives you direct

not used this program before
make sure to read all release notes
and methods of using the program
as mistakes can be made....
Once you’ve launched the app,
click on the Backup/Restore tab
and click the Menu button on your
phone. From the menu that
appears, select Batch. At the next
menu, click [RUN] Backup all user
apps + system data. You can
choose to backup just your user

choose a complete and total
backup of your phone.
Depending on how much of your
phone you’ve chosen to back up,
the initial backing up process can
take anywhere from a few minutes
to half an hour or even more. Just
like a Nandroid backup, you can
opt to copy the backup file to your
computer. Navigate to the /
Titanium Backup directory on your
device’s SD card and you can find
your backup there, ready for
safekeeping.
When you’d like to restore your
backup, you can enjoy the same
Batch function. Select Menu >
Batch. On the Backup/Restore
menu, scroll down to find restore
options.

Hello guys, this is going to be a long post andam very sorry about that. So, I got a Samsung galaxy note2 and I want to install the latest firmware which is version 4.3. Also, I'll like to try some android 4.4 custom rom. Am currently using version 4.1.2. Seriously, i've searched many threads without a satisfactory answer before restorting to start one. Before going on this adventure I'll like to do a complete backup of my original rom so i can go back to it anytime. I've decided to use nandroid for the full image backup (clockworkmod) and titanium for subsequent application and applications data backup. I know what these two apps do but I still have some questions.
1) What's is the safest way to root and unroot my device?
2) what files/apps do I need to do a nandroid and titanium backup and where do I get them?
3) can I keep this backups on my external sdcard, will I be able to access it from external sdcard on recovery mode incase my phone crashes?
4) someone said even after using the nandroid backup, I'll still have to Flash the kernel, what does this mean and how do I do that?
5) I plan using clockworkmod cos it sounds like a good idea. How do I get and use it.
Now I made a mess of myself asking all these questions. I'll still post it nonetheless cos I really need help with these questions or I wouldn't have asked. Thanks in advance guys. Once again, sorry for the long post.
1) any way that has been tested by the device users or devs, instructions should be followed clearly..
2) CWM needed for nandroid backup & Titanium Backup app is needed for data backups.
CWM would be available in dedicated threads for your device.
Titanium Backup app would be available in playstore
3) You can.
4) There are 2 ways AFAIK,
i. adb method to place the kernel inside the device
ii. Zip file flashing through CWM
5) Same answer as for Q2
Hit thanks rather than typing it now Free
Parkourkarthik, thanks so much for your quick response. Sorry to bother you further. About kernel flashing, is it that I'll have to flash the kernel every time I restore from my nandroid backup? I guess I'll have to download the kernel for my device before hand, so where do l keep It so CWM could use it.

for cwm check your device forum and you b=can take nandroid backup and if anything goes wrong you can backup with that
and for your question what all nandroid backup include here is the answer
nandroid backup includes
system partition
cache partition
data partition
boot partition
boot partition means kernel is included in boot partition only so kernel is also backed up in nandroid backup

if you restore nandroid backup you will automatically get stock kernel because nandroid backup includes boot partition where kernel is found
no need to flash kernel everytime
and you can keep kernel anywhere but if you simply download kernel image file or md5 file you an install it only with universal kernel flasher or adb you cant install that file directly in cwm
it must be a flashable zip to install in cwm to install it
Hey,
So my phone is encrypted as part of my job, and I wanted to run the latest update (XNPH38R) to the Phone and found that:
1. TWRP ( 2.8.0.1) won't let me create a nandroid backup of the phone
2. I can't apply the update because I can't see the content of my storage.
Bootloader in unlock and the phone is rooted
So my first question, Is there a way to do a nandroid backup to encrypted phone?
Is there a way to mount the encrypted storage in TWRP and apply the update
Regards
Same problem with my XT1068!
Also like to be able to format dalvik and do an backup in TWRP, but can't get around the encryption from TWRP.
As it seems, The Samsung S4 has an option to (temporary?) decrypt the Phone as shown in the following video:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W_qcTycR3UY
But I don't have this on my XT1068.
So Guess/hope there should be some work around somehow?
Edit: Maybe this could do the trick...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-nexus/help/how-to-decrypt-encrypted-phone-restore-t1964358
1. No, it would be pretty insecure if you could do a Backup of your phone without entering the password
Sadly an encrypted Backup is currently not possible too. (I understood that you can do a Backup but no restore?)
2. Don't know, but I expect you are locked into OTA updates for now.
Send from OnePlus One using Tapatalk
The problem with OTA is that I'll loose root after running the OTA and i need that.
I can't even do a backup,
BTY- you can do an encrypted backup in TWRP so you can put a password to the backup, bit it WON'T let you do a backup to encrypted system.

I would also be careful upgrading to 38R with encryption as I have read about some people running into problems. But have you tried Philz recovery? May have some more options.

Re-rooting the phone is easy and takes seconds.
I am having much the same issue that you are. I encrypted my phone and TWRP doesn't allow me to create a nandroid. I get an error stating the it can't mount the data partition. Is that what you're experiencing? I tried to search different forums and couldn't find anything definitive about a solution or if it's even possible to create a nandroid while the phone is encrypted.

OP - I think I found the solution to our problem. Or rather, Solo1 from the oneplus forum provided the following solution:
..."Eventually I managed to get TWRP v2.7.1.1 (as I previously used 2.8.0.1 and that didn't work) to work on my device. I have now successfully boot into recovery with the data partition mounted and perform my device upgrade from 33R to 38R."

Thanks for the advise,
I found a solution but it's a huge workaround:
1. created Titanium Backup
2. Plug the phone to the computer and backup the folders I need including Titanium Backup
3. Boot to recovery and do full phone wipe,
4. Use TWRP mount option and mont my data partition and copy the new image and Titanium Backup folder.
4. flash image, and boot devices,
5. after initial setup and another restart restore all apps and setting via Titanium Backup app
6. Enjoy the phone
I know it's a work around but This is way we are here at the first place, we like to thinker with our phones
Running the encryption again, and so far all is good
