I managed to hard brick my G8+ when trying to install an update (details in this thread).
I've ordered a new phone, same model, and I want to avoid making another expensive mistake!
What's the best way to be able to install updates when the phone is rooted with magisk?
And do I need to set up magisk in any special way first?
I have available updates on the (stock) phone now, should I install them now or wait until after I have magisk set up?
I'm not super confident with this stuff so any tutorials/extra info you can link to would be really helpful. Thanks!
I've been reading a bunch of other threads on this forum and I saw a lolinet download for an Android 10, on the software channel my phone has: https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/doha/official/RETAPAC/
Can I / should I use this to update the phone to Android 10? I would love to have a reasonably up-to-date OS but not if it's super difficult/risky to do it...

Hello,
I'm a total n00b when it comes to this stuff, but when I bought the new Galaxy S8+ I managed to root it using guides on this forum and it's now running an old version of the software.
Some data:
Phone: SM-G955F
Android version: 7.0
Build number: NRD90M.G955FXXU1AQDD
I know this is kind of old (1 April 2017) but it took me so long to set up root, get Magisk masking the right apps and customize the phone as I want it, that I didn't dare update the software with anything newer in case things go wrong.
Now that Samsung will soon be releasing Alpha Oreo versions, I was thinking of maybe moving the android version forward to something newer.
My question is, how easy is it? Is it just a matter of flashing the new release via Odin?
And will I lose any of my configurations? Will I lose root? Is root even possible in Oreo??
If it's not too hard of a process I might try it, just looking for some enlightenment.
Thanks!
Once the official version releases check for the ROM you're using to update as well, or flash one that's been updated. Unless you take the OTA on stock it's going to require you to full wipe though. Even then I would full wipe, you're upgrading to an entirely new version of Android. Dirty flashing not recommended at all.
Hello. Yesterday i installed latest OTA Android version (TB-J606L_S320030_210923_ROW) and noticed that it is really slow and it has even more bloatware that i don't want. I don't need to root it (because of bloatware removal) as i also need to revert it to default state as it was before update.
1. It is possible to find which version i had before this upgrade?
2. How could i downgrade system to previous version (i think it was Android 10 but i'm not sure)
PS: I successfully downgraded/rooted some devices but as every brand has it's specific way to perform downgrade, i'm asking here. Any advice would help and i'm aware of dangers of downgrading/rooting devices (bricking). In any case, it would be awesome to also link unbricking guide for TB-J606L, just in case It's always better to have plan B.
Update: I found source of roms for my device but i can't recognize which versions are old Android 10 and which are the new Android 11.
Hi. So this is my first post. I read through the rules and How to Post section, and I'm doing my best to keep the rules. So if I did something wrong, sorry. Also, this is a mix of questions:
I am totally new to modifying a phone's software. I daily drive EndeavorOS on my PC and laptop, so I have experience with Linux, luckily.
Do I need to root my phone to replace the OS?
What would be the best OS for my phone? I'd like to use LineageOS with microG, which would allow me to stay on Android, but I don't think they have official support for the Asus ROG Phone 5.
Would it be better to simply stay on my current OS and use microG?
If I did stay on the stock OS, how would I continue to update it?
A little thing worth mentioning, in case it makes a difference: my phone was made in China(CN), but was rezoned for America (WW).
Q: Do I need to root my phone to replace the OS?
- In principle no. Unlocking the bootloader is a must however.

The best OS for this phone is the original (and also the only on as far as I'm aware)

Yes. You can spoof signature, install MicroG and completely de-Google this device, it works if you want to go that far.
Q: If I did stay on the stock OS, how would I continue to update it?
Use automatic updates. If unlocked/rooted, simply download the firmware you need from the ASUS website.

Thank you so much. I don't know why, but automatic updates don't work on my phone anyway, so I'm fine with having to manually update the firmware. I know a guide on this forum on how to unlock the bootloader, but I don't know a guide on signature spoofing. How would I go about that?
Using Xposed to spoof signature is the most convenient way although there are a couple of methods (I think the MicroG documentation website has a guide).
Not having automatic updates means nothing, just update manually. In fact I prefer that. It also means you can disable the FOTA services that constantly run in the background and free up a tiny bit of CPU/RAM if your goal is performance optimization.
Hello,
Just got a S10e. Should I go ahead and upgrade it? It's pestering me to update the phone's software but I don't want to ruin my chances to root.
OneUI v3.1
Android v11
Baseband G970U
My goal is to root and get Viper4Audio back on my phone. Can anyone give me a brief rundown on what to update or not, what ROMs are best for whatever reasons, etc?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Depends on what boot loader version you are on.
First, I apologize if these answers are already posted elsewhere, in which case please point me in the right direction.
So I use to be able to root my phones with my eyes closed (back when HSPA was the fastest and I needed to overclock my single core processor to 1.2GHz because my phone didn't have 8 cores), but its been 2 years since I've rooted my one plus 9 and I was pretty rusty then so I'm pretty much lost now. I know that over the years there's been changes to the way things must be done depending on the phone, version, etc. I'm trying to update my phone to either android 12 or 13, and unless I'm mistaken, I can't just flash an android 13 custom rom over the rooted OOS rom that is stock with the exception of having Magisk of course. If that's incorrect, that would be very convenient. But if I am, what steps do I need to do to get this done? I have SDK platform-tools ready, but I no longer have backups of the stock boot.img, or anything for that matter. My mother is a hypochondriac of sorts, so I can't have my phone not work for more than a day, or I'll have the police at my door doing a wellness check. Thanks in advance for any help!

Use MSM Tool to reset your phone to initial factory firmware, which is OOS11. You can then update through OTA all the way to the latest.
And next time you root your phone, DON'T flash the patched boot.img. Instead, temporarily boot by the command fastboot boot <your_patched_boot.img> and then from Magisk app, use Direct Install. That way, Magisk will backup your original boot.img which you can restore later if there is a new OTA.
Do you have a token? Get one if you dont.

Takes a couple days to a month to get it. Check back at that page, they will not notify you when its ready.
Once you get it, MSM to global base A11\OOS11 to debrand, and also allow for easier updates since Tmobile is stingy about pushing out A13 recently.
Get to latest OTA update, fastboot flash cust-unlock <unlock_token.bin> to unlock BL, install Magisk anyway you want.
