Ever since I switched from twrp to cwm, strange things have been happening. I made a thread a few days ago about how neither recovery or rom would boot. Well, a few people suggested that I fastboot erase cache and my problems would be gone. I did, and I didn't wan't to say anything to be difficult but it did fail to boot recovery 1 more time after that. After that one time, it was fine- for a while. More recently, I ended up freezing/disabling google services on venom 3.2.6 because it was causing massive wakelock. I've made 3 full wipes today, and after going back to cleanrom, I can't sign in to gmail because google services is still disabled even after a full wipe. So I switched back to twrp and fastboot erased cache. Unfortunately, the problem still persists.
tl;dr
Wiping doesn't work for some things like data and cache. At least, I think that's what's happening. Does anyone have any clue as to why this is happening? It's not a big deal, I was just hoping someone might know why.
Flash the "Format ALL" at the bottom of this post. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1946784
That will guarantee a full correct wipe is performed (SD card contents will be untouched). I use it when I switch between ROMs.
Then reinstall CleanROM and report back.

OMG that worked. WHY did that work? haha.
I still don't know why "wiping" in cwm AND twrp is failing to format/wipe. Thanks for the help, I really appreciate it. I was starting to freak out thinking "I KNOW I HIT FORMAT" lol
"format erase cache" wipes out previous recoveries info so always do that when changing recoveries. also twrp and cwm format differently so doing a full wipe in twrp first then change to cwm doing "format erase cache" then do full wipe inside cwm might clear some things up. as far as issues go i haven't received any in cwm.

Well see that's just it: I used fastboot erase cache every time I switched recoveries after the first problem I had a few days ago. And every time I switch roms I always format everything- cache, dalvik, data, and system. And I never restore anything. I guess I'm the only one getting these problems No big deal though I guess I'll just use this every time I switch roms.
Thanks again guys.
Yeah, just use that. Different recoveries have different words for what formatting is being performed. We need to format system, cache, and delvik cache. In some versions of twrp this is cache, delvik cache and factory reset.
It's quicker to just use Calkulin's tool.

im talking about in twrp when you wipe everything but go into backup it still shows sizes. well if you format in cwm then go into twrp and check the sizes they are different then if you formatted in twrp in which i assume they format differently im not sure what is left behind but it must be something since when you use "format erase cache" it truely erases to 0.

Are you trying to wipe the phone or refresh a new ROM?
Can you try a different recovery?
What about a USB push?

I am trying to use the Wipe Data/Factory reset option. I have tried, ClockworkMod, CWM Touch and TWRP with no success. I am not sure if it has anything to do with flipping the internal sd card and external sd card

From what I can remember, you are not supposed to do a "Factory Reset." It has nothing to go back to. You are only supposed to wipe data and caches. If you can, reboot into recovery doing 3 finger, it still works, and reflash your rom. If you do the wipe data it will do what you need. The factory reset is a no no.

Not sure what you mean by that...
If you have a rooted phone with a custom recovery - or a factory phone and able to access their recovery...
Factory Reset should wipe the phone and user data and reload whatever ROM is on the phone - fresh...
If you have tried multiple recoverys to no avail...
You may want to try and reinstall your ROM and then do a reset...
If that still don't work - you are on Samsung right? - Grab Odin and push a new package to the phone and try that way.
Have you checked to see if your phone "Privacy" menu has a Factory Reset option?
Does that work?

In CWM, there is just one option to wipe data/factory reset. My ROM is working perfectly but its just that when i switch ROMS, I cannot do a full wipe. I have been flashing ROMs the same way for years now and only for past month I have been facing this issue.

I disagree with my experiences... Struggling for years with a Thunderbolt, I flashed tons of ROMs...
While I didn't like Factory Resets, I did do them from time to time to see if it would help (never did with the Thunderbolts)...
When I Factory Reset, even with a custom ROM, the phone was reset like factory - but using whatever ROM was loaded on the phone.

I would say flipping the SD cards might be what is causing the issue. If you can, save whatever data you need and go back to 100% stock! This includes relocking the bootloader, which will FORCE ALL DATA to be wiped. After you do this, reroot and try again!
P.S. I believe you can run the fastboot oem unlock command without having to relock the bootloader. Again, this will COMPLETELY WIPE ALL DATA out!

Guys thanks for your inputs and help. Appreciated I found out the issue. For some reason /data does not get mounted automatically. I had to mount and then do a factory reset. That fixed the problem. Thanks again guys!:good:
I have been unsuccessfully trying to find an answer to this question for the last hour!
I know you better don't use this option if you have a custom recovery installed, but never learned: Why?
What does the stock bootloader wipe if you execute 'Wipe Data"?

It tells the recovery to wipe the data. The issues exist where older versions of recoveries don't understand what a newer version of the bootloader told it to do. I don't know if it gets stuck in a loop at this point as the bootloader is now waiting for the recovery to finish or the recovery actually wipes the wrong partition?
If the bootloader and recovery are compatible there shouldn't be a problem. But why take the risk?
_that can probably offer more technical detail.......

I guess my question is: does 'Wipe data' from the BL menu on a stock system wipe only /data or also /system and ... anything else? Or is it just the same (in terms of result) as a format data in TWRP?
I am trying to help someone on the Transformer forum who seems to have a seriously messed up tablet: Lots of random reboots and freezes, Factory Reset from the Settings menu causes a restart and nothing else...
On a stock system Wipe Data from the BL should be ok to use, right?
I just don't want to send him down a path I don't fully understand....

The following is what I know - it might not be 100% corrrect because I've never tried it myself:
When the user chooses "wipe data" from the bootloader menu, the bootloader writes some information to the "misc" partition (mmcblk0p3) and starts the recovery. The recovery finds a command in the misc partition and formats (?) the data partition. When it is finished, it removes the command from the misc partition so that the bootloader can again boot Android. When it is interrupted in any way, after a reboot the bootloader will automatically enter the recovery directly.
The problem with this is if your recovery is broken or incompatible. I've read somewhere in this forum that the incompatibility is from enabling something called TF (Trusted Foundation) in the bootloader since JB, which requires a corresponding option in the (Android and recovery) kernel. If the kernel does not have this enabled, it cannot access the eMMC at all.
Now if your recovery cannot access the eMMC, you can't reset the information in the misc partition, and the bootloader will stubbornly try to boot the recovery to wipe data. The fact that not even the boot menu or fastboot works in this case makes this a hard brick.

It should only delete /data because if it wiped /system you could not boot Android anymore. It's called "ROM" for a reason.

I believe that "factory reset" from the Settings menu should do something similar as "wipe data" from the bootloader - instruct the recovery to wipe data and reboot. If that reboot does not enter the recovery, something seems wrong.
Wiping data from the bootloader *should* be safe on a stock system, but I'd check before if entering the stock recovery manually (Volume-down) works. I believe it even has a menu (try the Power button) that you can use for wiping data too, but maybe I am confusing this with early versions of CWM.

Who is brave enough to try to test it? It may do what TWRP calls a factory wipe. I.e., it doesn't touch /data/media but does the rest of the data partition, it may do the full data partition.
Have a look in the TF101 forums for different types of bricks - there is a thread there describes two ot three types of bricks and solutions. You may find an answer there. Also look here for busters solution

If something is called "factory reset" or "wipe data", I expect it to remove *all* user data. I don't know why TWRP is broken in this regard - OK, the feature to preserve /data/media is useful but then they shouldn't call it "factory reset".

No, wipe from the bootlloader also wipe your personal data. I have been there and done that.
With " Wipe Data" only /system will survive, all other partitions will be wiped and personal data will be lost. Personally i can say that i tried every possible combination to brick this device (getting to a state where only APX could help - yes i have Nvflash blobs) but i always failed. Certainly the test were made with compatible bootloader - recovery.... and please don't try that at home if your device is not NvFlash capable.

So what is the problem? You wanted to do a factory reset, and it does a factory reset. Wait until it is finished and it should reboot to Android.

Hi,
I accidently flashed TWRP, but i was already on emui9 so twrp doesent work there.
Now i can update the EMUI anymore because when the phone restarts during the install process it goes into recovery (twrp) which causes the update to fail
My question is: Can i remove twrp, maybe by flashing the orignal ramdisk image? pls help
You would have to reflash the recovery partition... Which we don't have, and since TWRP is kind of broken on EMUI 9.... well...
Can you just wipe caches and reboot to get the phone working? The update is stored in the cache partition, if you wipe cache it should boot normally.

Not if you are on EMUI 9... I don't believe so as we don't have the factory image for it, and to my knowledge we can't just dd it or make a backup of it right now. Although you might be able try the downgrade to 8.1 in another thread here, then upgrade via OTA again, but that's your choice.
I haven't installed TWRP on this devices, but basically go to the wipes menu, advanced wipes, and tick anything that says cache in it's name (often Dalvik cache and cache) and swipe to wipe them. This will not harm any of your data or applications, only the cache space. Then reboot.

Try a smaller Gapps package than the one that you flashed with the ROM. The package you used is probably too large to fit in the system partition along with the ROM.
Or, you didn't factory reset, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache when you flashed the ROM. Failing to do those wipes will cause bugs due to the new system conflicting with the saved system data/settings from the previous system. In other words, data left over from the old ROM is causing problems with the new ROM.

Boot back into recovery, then factory reset, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache, then reboot.
If that doesn't work, try booting back into recovery then flash the ROM then the Gapps then factory reset, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache then reboot.
If that doesn't work, try booting back into recovery, then select the "Wipe" option, then choose the "advanced wipes" option, then choose the system partition, then swipe the slider at the bottom to run the wipe, then try flashing just the ROM but don't flash the Gapps, factory reset, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache then reboot. After you get the device booted, you can delete the Gapps file then download a smaller package and put it in your phone's internal storage then boot back into recovery and select the "Install" option, at this point, you already have the ROM installed so no need to flash it again, but you do need to flash the new Gapps file, then factory reset, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache.
Do you see how important it is to factory reset, wipe cache and wipe dalvik cache every time you flash? It is a vital step.
