[Motorola Shamu 7.1.1]Recovery mode(TWRP) file modifying not work after reboot - General Questions and Answers

Hello everyone, I'm new from XDA and I have a problem in android system file replacing.
1. I managed to reboot my device Motorola Shamu 7.1.1 to recovery mode(TWRP3.3.1.0) and adb sideload xposed.zip.
2. Everything is ok and after I'm reboot XposedInstaller still says framework not installed. adb shell to see /system and there is no "xposed.prop" in the path.
3. Rebooting to rec and resee /system and "xposed.prop" is in /system indeed, and it just disappeared after reboot.
I could just root my device to make XposedInstaller installing framework in booted system so there is no need to recommend magisk.
I just wanna figure out what I'm encountering in this situation. What does it happen.
Thanks for your help
I have heard about the slot A/B but it seems not the reason in shamu.

HTC EVO superuser port to Samsung Transform???

Rooted my Transform and went in to the superuser APK.... I'm disappointed that it has very limited content vs. my buddies HTC EVO. I'm new to Androids, but anyone know if there would be a way to port the superuser APK from the HTC EVO to the Samsung Transfrom, or is it even Feasible?
Can you go into more detail on how you rooted your Samsung Transform. I have tried SuperOneClick but the root never sticks. I would lose superuser randomly.
I just rooted with Super One Click, now, i dont know what to do with it lol. It sticks with me though.
No need for a superuser port. Just download from the market after rooting
via skeeterslint sdx:
Heres is a one click recovery installer for people that don't want to do it by hand.
http://www.mediafire.com/?jl21knp1d0lbf17
This is a still beta but working version of SDX Recovery version 3.1.1.
Things known to work.
Backups and restores.
Clearing dalvik cache.
Clearing cache partition.
Flashing kernel zImages.
Flashing zip files.
Adb works in recovery.
Also mounting the sdcard to your computer works.
Anything else in the options is still in need of testing I am not responsible if your phone gets bricked.
THIS MAY BRICK ALL PHONE MODS YOU DO AT YOUR OWN RISK!
OK now that thats out of the way heres the files needed.
1. http://www.mediafire.com/?862j3wlzftenwef This is the recovery image.
2. http://www.mediafire.com/?67an7lkm9qtmf5b until there is a custom recovery you will need this program to flash recovery. Its called flash_image.
3. http://www.mediafire.com/?5dcv3r14sjvsfdq rage.bin temporary exploit to get root.
4. You will also need the Android SDK so you have a working adb to be able to push files over to your phone.
If you are flashing this from a phone running my rooted kernel you can skip steps 4 and 7 and just su over to a root prompt.
OK these are the steps to install this recovery.
1. Make sure adb is installed and working there are how to's on the forum to get this setup or just use google.
2 adb push recovery.bin /data/local/tmp to move the kernel to the phone.
3 adb push flash_image /data/local/tmp to move flash_image onto the phone.
4 adb push rage.bin /data/local/tmp to move rage.bin onto the phone.
5. Run adb shell to get to a shell prompt on the phone.
6. Run chmod 755 on flash_image and rage.bin chmod 755 rage.bin chmod 755 flash_image.
7. Run ./rage.bin and let it go run through untill it exits you out of adb.
8. adb shell you should now have a root shell on the phone.
9. Run ./flash_image recovery recovery.bin to install the kernel.
Once its installed to get into recovery use Volume down Camera and power to get into recovery.
Volume up and down scroll through the option.
Menu should be the enter key.
Back button is back.
Search key is delete.
You will need to create the directorys on your sdcard that recovery needs to flash zip files make backup and flash kernel and recovery from.
Create directory called sdx on the root of the sdcard and inside it create 3 folders zips update and backup.
At this time it seems that factory restore is not working correctly and anyone else can confirm please let me know.
And for better recovery via vampirefo on sdx:
his is my first recovery, I made the change to the first screen to show that this is a transform recovery rather than a moment recovery. Also I got console to work in recovery, it wont rotate but works just fine.
http://www.4shared.com/file/bBTlN7UZ/recoveryrfs.html
You can flash this via swupdate, or if you already have skeeters recovery installed, just extract recovery.tar to /sdcard/sdx/updates
boot to recovery
Scroll down to
Backup, Restore, Flash
Scroll down to
Flash Recovery
After flash is complete
press back button
Under Reboot options choose Reboot to Recovery to see new recovery

Lollipop and TWRP/CWM Recovery Problem

Hi everybody,
I upgraded to Lollipop using the original image. Everything was fine. No problem of any kind. Then I decided to flash the TWRP recovery. At the first run (just after installation) it was there and worked fine (I even made a backup). However, after a reboot when I went to the recovery I found that it was the stock recovery and TWRP was gone. The back up is also gone from my internal storage. The same thing happened when I flashed the latest version of CWM. After a reboot the flashed recovery is gone.
Please help. Thanks in advance.

well, if you used boot instead of flash, itll only boot the recovery for a one time use. flash should make it stick. if not sticking, flash a recovery 2 or 3 times, itll stick eventually.

Thank you, I will try that and then report...
Do you have the latest version of the recovery and the root files?
I used CF Root as Chainfire is the man. I ran it first, then I added the recovery.
It stuck for me.
Remove the scripts etc that install recovery such as inatall-recovery.sh and recovery.boot.p in system and system/bin
Just double check your install-recovery.sh isn't one used to call su because you don't want to remove that if it is.

I flashed ( flash .img ) the recovery 2 or 3 times (even more) but it won't stick. If I do not reboot to system it remains there but as soon as I reboot to system it is gone.

I actually tried that, but had the following problem:
Code:
sudo adb shell mv /system/bin/install-recovery.sh{,.bak}
mv: rename /system/bin/install-recovery.sh to /system/bin/install-recovery.sh.bak: Read-only file system
Do you have an idea how I can come around this issue?
edit: I have figured that out, check post #15

From my understanding you need root to be able to edit files in /system. And in there is the script that "misbehaves" for us.
But I've not quite understood how to come by the read only file system problem

Does it mean that lollipop behaves differently from KitKat? I could have recovery without root there. It stuck at the first flash. But now it is removed every time I boot to the system.
I've ran into the same problem except for me I'm not even getting stock recovery. I don't even have one lol
Okay guys so I figured out how to get it to work (and the recovery to stick!)
First of all, get root. CF Auto root is your friend here.
Now to the problem: The recovery seems to be "reflashed" at every boot. (with an "empty" recovery).
To fix it, boot your phone up and connect it to a pc that has adb installed.
remember to not use sudo under windows, just keep that part out
Code:
sudo adb shell
Now you are on a shell in your android. Since /system is mounted readonly, we first have to remount it:
Code:
[email protected]:/ $ su
[email protected]:/ # mount -o rw,remount /system
now change the install script (I just added a .bak to the name so we do not have to delete it) and remount the filesystem and read only again:
Code:
[email protected]:/ # mv /system/bin/install-recovery.sh{,.bak}
[email protected]:/ # mount -o ro,remount /system
Finally flash the recovery as you are used to, it will now stick:
Code:
sudo adb reboot-bootloader
sudo fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.8.1.0-hammerhead.img
sudo fastboot reboot
From here on, you are back in android and your recovery should have sticked
Maybe you should go to system and find a file like this
recover --from--boot
then delete it
Alright, well the above solution definitely helped, but now when i try to enter super su, it tells me the binaries arent updated and the root needs to be done manually.....but didnt i just do this?

You can have a recovery without root. Also root is only "in" android. If your recovery has a file manager, it can edit /system files without root because android isn't running lg, ergo no protection. Its just like taking a hard drive out of a computer and adding it as a 2nd in another computer. You don't need that computers password to get the data.
So flash the ROM and see if you can delete them using the recovery file manager or adb whilst booted into recovery

This was all unnecessary.
boot recovery
Flash ROM
mount system
adb shell
rm /system/blah
That was all.
Re
I had the same problem yesterday except that i was intending to install both root and TWRP recovery. I flashed TWRP and ran it then installed supersu, the root did not work and TWRP was gone after rebooting the system.
I used the "cf auto root" utility made by chainfire. It worked (even though the root has few bugs)
I noticed that cf-auto-root flashed some boot img before installing root and twrp. I think you may want to give it a look.

This is what I did:
Boot to recovery-->
Flashing TWRP img-->
Then immediately going to TWRP file manager-->
Changing install-recovery.sh to install-recovery.sh.old -->
Then immediately made a backup --> reboot to system, turning the cellphone on and off several times
TWRP is there BUT:
The only point is that I cannot see the backup folder in my internal storage. It is clear that it has taken some
space (almost 2GB) but I cannot see the TWRP backup folder.

BLU Advance 5.0 HD

It looks to me like the best phone $80 can buy I spent couple hours trying to figure out how to enable Multi User module.
My understanding is that adding this to /system/build.prop would bring users module back:
fw.max_users=3
fw.show_multiuserui=1
None of the commonly used apps can root this phone.
Without root I cannot remount /system to read-write to edit build.prop
Stock recovery can mount /system
There are options in recovery to run update from sd card or to update via adb sideload but the phone does not show in adb devices while in recovery. There is also fastboot option.
I also tried dirty cow exploit but it fails with "only position independent executables (PIE) are supported"
I am into this for only couple hours, so I know I am missing a lot. Any pointers that could get me closer to enabling Users module would be welcome.
So, after some reading, i figured I should be able to apply update form recovery that will replace build.prop with modified one. For start, to test things out, I just want to copy file from update.zip to /system/build.prop.test
I created update.zip with update-script and the file I want to add to /system.
Here is update.zip: www . filedropper.com /update_10
I signed update.zip using this:
www . learn2crack.com /2014/02/sign-android-apk-zip.html
I get error "Signature verification failed". Is the problem that keys are test keys or that they are outdated? Is some special manufacturer key required to sign updates?
I am not looking for someone to do this, I just need to be pointed in the right direction.
I have multiple users now :
- downloaded TWRP from bluroms.info
- connected the phone, enabled USB debugging and OEM unlocking in developer options
- run "adb reboot bootloader"
- after phone booted in fastboot mode
fastboot oem unlock (followed instructions on screen / all data wiped)
fastboot boot blutwrp.img (downloaded TWRP)
- twrp started...
- mounted /system
adb pull /system/build.prop
- edited build.prop
adb push build.prop /system/build.prop
adb reboot
- phone got stuck on logo after reboot
removed battery and started the phone again and all seems good

If by rooting you mean, installing supersu so that apps can request root access, i did not do that, because i do not need it. There must be some tutorial around about installing supersu once you root access to the /system - and the steps I described can you get there.

So is getting root access to system like booting recovery TWRP? then pressing the Mount button and checking System? Sorry I'm a newb at this.
I'd love to gain root on this phone I have twrp installed but can't seem to find a root method that works
Just in case you guys are still watching this, I posted my experience with this phone here

Netflix and Magisk don't work on MIUI Global 10.3.3.0

Recently I changed my rom from China Version 10.3.2.0 Stable to Global Version 10.3.3.0 Stable via fastboot flashing. However, I just figure out that Magisk cannot be flashed any more. The phone will BOOTLOOP into TWRP after flashing Magisk. I can only uninstall it. Besides, my TWRP will be replaced by stock recovery after booting into the system. I'm using official TWRP 3.3.0 (I used orangefox recovery and it stayed) and Magisk 19.3 (with orangefox, this still DOESN'T work). And my model is XE version (bought from China).
And my Netflix also doesn't work even if I didn't root my device (because I can't).
May I know if anyone can kindly help me out? Thanks in advance!
0. Have the global rom on your phone
1. reboot into twrp recovery
1.1 connect to pc
2. flash magisk
3. mount system partition
4. open a terminal on pc and type
Code:
adb pull /system/build.prop
5. open build.prop and find
Code:
ro.product.name
6. change it to any value except polaris
7. back to terminal and type
Code:
adb push build.prop /system/build.prop
8. reboot
Thanks so much

Repeated update failure AND HOW TO FIX IT OnePlus 8t

I was in the process of rooting when the update was trying to run. Now I keep getting an install failure and can't seem to get any way to fix it.
Where is this update stored so I can delete it or can I get some advice on how to clear it so I can get it to try again?
I can't find the update for download anywhere :/
Not thing about file/cache. Incremental OTA need unroot frist.

Same let me know if you find it lol
OK good news I got myself sorted!
1. What I did was use "Oxygen OS updater" (can be found on playstore) with advanced mode enabled and downloaded the latest OS (11.0.8.11.)
2. Use local upgrade under settings to install 11.0.8.11 and restart. This will remove root but not user data or settings.
3. Check for and install update 11.0.8.12 under settings and it should install fine no issues.
4. Re root using your chosen method.
5. Done!
Interesting. How did you get the boot file for x.12? Isn't that required for rooting..

Since we don't have TWRP yet for our 8T, having ADB enabled on the stock recovery can be really helpful if you are unlocked and rooted.
For example, removing problematic magisk modules.
I tried to install the EdExposed module and ended with a boot loop. To get back I had to flash the stock boot.img again and reconfigure all my modules again.
Having ADB enabled in OOS recovery will let us delete the problematic module at /data/adb/modules without having to delete the working modules.

CAVEAT
I've only tested this on my device (KB2005 / KB05AA), but it should be universally helpful as it's using your own boot.img so there's no need to find a matching package for your variant and os version.
CREDIT
The steps were buried across a few threads, I'm posting this so it'll be easier for others to find the information. All credit goes to xb360, FullOfHell, and TheUnkn0wn.
INFOThe basic rundown is:
Use the semi-broken TWRP package to give yourself temporary su access through adb.
Extract the boot.img your phone is currently using to your pc.
Reboot to OxygenOS, copy over the boot.img you just extracted and then use Magisk to patch it.
Copy the boot.img back to your pc and use adb to temporarily boot your phone with it, giving you root access until reboot.
Use your temporary root access to allow Magisk to patch your internal as-yet unmodified boot.img to give you permanent root.
There seems to be some confusion in the thread, I'll try to clear up what's happening and why:
The primary issue at hand is that you can't root your device without already having root privileges, for security reasons. Without a custom recovery like TWRP, there are a few more steps than usual (but mostly simple stuff).
Because we don't flash anything with this guide, it shouldn't cause any permanent bootloops if you use the wrong boot.img, if you get stuck in one just power cycle your phone.
Updating with OTAs should be the same process as the other guides here.
Because of changes in Android, devices that launched with Android 10 and above will not allow you to modify the system partition, even with root. This is not a fault of this rooting method.
Prerequisites:
ADB and Fastboot installed.
An unlocked bootloader and USB debugging enabled.
________________________________________________________
STEPS:
1. Connect your phone to your pc and boot it into fastboot mode. You can leave it connected throughout this guide.
2. On your computer open a terminal/cmd prompt. Set the directory (on your pc) you want to work from, I'm using the desktop:
for Windows, type cd C:\Users\Yourname\Desktopfor Mac, type cd desktop or cd /Users/yourname/Desktop
Spoiler: How to set up adb and fastboot properly
To usb adb and fastboot commands outside of the folder those programs are located in, you'll need to add their location to the PATH list so your terminal can still find them when it's pointing to a different folder. If you want to skip this step, set the directory to the folder that contains adb instead of the desktop.
3. Next, use the terminal to check which A/B partition is active on your phone:
Code:
fastboot getvar all
a. You'll find it on this line: (bootloader) current-slot:a/bb. For simplicity I'll be referring to boot_a.img throughout the guide, make sure to use boot_b.img if that's the one marked as active on your device.
4. Download the semi-broken TWRP package to your desktop. We'll be using it to extract a copy of your active boot_a.img. It will give you temporary su access via adb, but there won't be a gui. Only boot from it, DO NOT FLASH IT:
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
adb shell
dd if=/dev/block/by-name/boot_a of=/sdcard/boot_a.img
exit
adb pull /sdcard/boot_a.img boot_a.img
adb reboot
5. Copy the extracted boot_a.img file to a user accessible area of your phone, like your downloads folder.
6. Install the latest Magisk Canary apk on your phone. Open it and:
a. Select the Install option.b. Use Select and Patch a File on boot_a.img
7. Copy the patched magisk_patched_a.img file back to your computer. In terminal, type adb reboot bootloader to get back to fastboot mode.
8. Temporarily boot with the patched image that corresponds to the active partition, DO NOT FLASH IT:
Code:
fastboot boot magisk_patched_a.img
Spoiler: Why we're booting and not flashing.
You could flash this boot.img, but it's safer to temporarily boot from it without overwriting your existing image in case anything went wrong along the way. The effect is that you still get root access without modifying your device, and then you can use the much safer Magisk direct install option, which has some safeguards in place.
9. By booting with the patched image, you now have temporary root access. To make it permanent open Magisk:
a. Select the Install option.b. Use Direct Install (Recommended) to root your internal boot.img
10. Reboot and verify it worked.

Are you guys aware of the zip file @osm0sis created that lets you add ADB to the stock recovery? You'll need to be rooted to use it.

It works really well - I've used it on 11.0.8.11 and .12
Thank you sir. I took the plunge and have been rewarded. Appreciate it!

5. Done!

This looks like a great app but it won't work if you need to downgrade. The current release (11.0.8.12.KB05AA) is so bad (look at OnePlus forums) that OnePlus has even taken it down and is no longer available for download. The current one is the previous one (11.0.8.11.KB05AA). Because I have already installed the "12" release, the OxygenOS System Update will not let me downgrade to the "11" release. It gives a "to avoid booting up failure, downgrading is not allowed" message.
Can I sideload/flash this "11" zip file via ADB and accomplish my goal of downgrading? Or could I change the active slot to the inactive one, reboot and get back to "11" that way?

Well I tried switching slots but the inactive slot was corrupted from earlier. So I do not have an "11" in the other slot.

Since OP 8T OxygenOS does not have a recovery, ADB sideload will not work.
Now that 11.0.8.13 is out and I'm on 11.0.8.12 right now, and so far I haven't come across a full zip for 13 yet. Not sure, if this will work .. but I'm thinking, I will uninstall magisk via the app. Restart to ensure, I'm unrooted and then do an OTA to 13. After the OS has been upgraded, follow the steps to root the boot dump file. Anyone tried this method and if would work? The 2 things I'm worried about are - 1) if I uninstall Magisk via the app, does it fully unroot and allows OTA, 2) will the broken twrp shared above work on the latest OOS x.13?
Thanks!

For anyone who's interested. This worked!
Hey little bit of an add in! Keep a backup of your non Rooted boot.img!! It is actually easier to flash the non rooted and update just to reroot again.
