Can't update with root - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

Hello there.
i posted this post and asked how to update with root.
i did all the below but my phone was wiped, and the whole storage of phone was gone.
now i have another update and i dont want it to happen again, so someone please can help me and tell me how the hell can i update with root?
i found this tutorial but i dont know if its good or not because its old post.
Help me please!

Here's mine...
1. Download a full 2gb+ rom from oneplus updater
2. Once finished, install it via settings / system / system update / gear icon / local update..
3. Wait till it says 100% installed and is now asking you to reboot the phone
4. Do not reboot, instead, hit the back button.. go to magisk manager, hit install / install to inactive slot . Then reboot.
5. After a reboot, you will still be rooted but lose your twrp.. so install TWRP VIA magisk..
6. After TWRP is installed, it will say, unrooted phone. So install MAGISK AGAIN via direct install, then reboot..

So I'm not supposed to do anything? All the specified installes that I am supposed to do, for example the installation of TWRP through MAGISK, should this solve my problem and after the restart I actually stay with both MAGISK and TWRP or should I do something/download and install something from beginning? I will now try to do it again in the hope that this time it will work.
edit:
what should i do if i have custom kernel and not stock?

Hmm.. ive forgotten if you can download the full rom via system updater if you're phone has root access.
I didnt bother too. I always download a full update via oxygen updater.. then install it via system updater.. then install magisk to inactive slot, reboot, install twrp via magisk, then install magisk using direct install option, then reboot to twrp.. flash my favorite rz kernel, then reboot

It seems so easy, but it's exactly what I did before and just deleted my whole phone, everything from everything. It was not even WIPE, it was a total erasure of all internal memory

How to upgrade rooted/unlocked OOS 9 to latest without losing anything?

I am unlocked + rooted with Magisk. I want to stay that way.
Last time I upgraded from OOS 9.0.1 > 9.0.2 via UI, the upgrade wiped everything and I needed to start from scratch (as if I just got a new phone). Is there a way to make the upgrade seamless without losing everything? I want to upgrade to 9.0.3

You can't do either thing you want to do there because of the added fun of the OnePlus 6 having A/B partitioning. With A/B partitioning there is no recovery partition, and recovery is now a part of boot. You need to flash TWRP again because the update will overwrite TWRP with stock recovery. And you have to wait til after the reboot to recovery to install magisk so it gets the partitioning right.
Like above.
Flashing ROM Will also flash stock recovery so after ROM you need to flash twrp again,if you reboot without it it's lost.
Also why magisk isn't flashed right away is because: when you choose to reboot to twrp after the twrp flash it Will change slot, this way you Will get magisk on the correct slot.
All this can be done from the OS.
Install the ROM upgrade as usual, don't reboot.
Open magisk app
Search for a module a/b twrp (you Will only find one module) and install it.ndont reboot just yet.
Go to main screen of magisk
Press install, install, install to inactive slot (after OTA). After this install you can reboot.
Both works, I find the twrp way to be more convenient
I don't about stable i am on open beta 10 i root every beta without twrp using patch boot image i got update every time around 1.5 GB because i am rooted after update i just lose root everything same before update phone not wipe anything
I upgraded vom 9.0.1 to 9.0.3 by
- Downloading the full 9.0.3
- Copy them to the sdcard root directory
- Update via settings / manual update - DO NOT REBOOT
- Reinstall Magisk into inactive slot with Magisk Manager
- Reboot
Works. But Magisk 18 MagiskHide does not work properly on my OP6, so I had to downgrade to Magisk 17.2.
- Download latest TWRP BluSpark .img, Magisk 18 uninstaller, Magisk 17.2
- Copy uninstaller and Magisk 17.2 to sdcard root
- Reboot into Fastboot
- Boot into TWRP by fastboot boot <name of TWRP BluSpark .img file)
- flash uninstaller
- flash Magisk 17.2
- Clear Dalvik cache
- Reboot and setup Magisk (settings in Magisk manager regarding Hide and root permissions were lost).
- Uninstall duplicate Magisk Manager 6.1.x (not compatible with Magisk 17.2).

I do not have TWRP installed, it is basically not necessary as OOS can be updated with the settings/manual update tool and Magisk can be reinstalled via Magisk manager.
I had to use TWRP solely to downgrade to Magisk 17.2 from Magisk 18 as this cannot be done with Magisk Manager. But for that purpose, it's enough to temporarly make TWRP available via fastboot boot command without permanently installing it.
If you have TWRP and want to keep it, that easy process doesn't work to upgrade the OS.

So magisk installs to the opposite partition you're currently booting from? Only reason I ask is because previously, I missed the second reboot before installing magisk and the phone wouldn't boot (long boot logo and eventual automatic restart to recovery). Ultimately, I just permanently installed twrp and was going to wait till the weekend to try root again in case there were issues. I'm currently booting from slot A. How do I install magisk now in recovery? Should I be in slot A or B in recovery for install? Or can I now just do it from magisk manager? Thanks for the info.

I am not entirely sure if it does or not, but again the A/B partitioning puts things in the boot partition instead of the partitions you are used to. Installing TWRP changes the boot partition, so you need to reload that boot partition before installing magisk will work right.

As promised, I'm writing back with my findings. I believe some enabled module in magisk was the issue. What I did was uninstall magisk 18 with the latest uninstaller. Thinking it was V18 itself that was the problem, I then proceeded to install v17.3 on both slots (reboot to recovery in betweene). This worked and booted! It started to occur to me that I had not disabled any of my modules before installation of the rom/magisk. This is a big mistake as a lot of magisk modules are still using old formatting and cause new installations to fail if left enabled. Since an uninstall also disables all modules, I believe using 17.3 was not necessarily the solution but rather either disabling modules before an install, or uninstalling whatever version magisk was installed to begin with (which essentially disables/uninstalls those modules anyway). After installing 17.3 and getting it to boot, I just updated via magisk manager to v18 with no issues to speak of! Now comes the part where I need to remember all the installed modules I had and test them one by one.
For uninstallation of modules in twrp, you can use https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/module-tool-magisk-manager-recovery-mode-t3693165 Or https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=72542167&postcount=242&nocache=1
I hope this helps someone!

phone has lost root issue

I used magisk on my phone for roots right but it has lost roots. I tried to go into recovery to reinstall magisk but recovery isnt booting, when it select advanced it gives me fastboot or recovery options but when I select recovery its goes back to the start again. I have tried to reinstall TWRP using this method
https://www.xda-developers.com/official-twrp-oneplus-6-huawei-p20-pro/
but I then get a crash dump window.
Please can I get some advice how to proceed?
Thanks
Make sure you're using 3.2.3, anything prior to that is not for Android Pie. If you updated your OS that is more than likely the reason you lost root. Make sure that you download TWRP.img and fastboot through the image before you try to install TWRP permanently

Good deal glad you got everything working.
I'm on stock android 10 and I have accepted an update I was offered yesterday. It seems everytime I update I have an issue rooting and installing TWRP (last month I was bricked), maybe because I use the last TWRP version I have before the update (currently twrp-3.3.1-1-enchilada). What is the correct process for installing TWRP and rooting again with Magisk? Do I need to get a TWRP update each time?
You have to install the latest one (3.3.18).
Reboot fastboot, type fastboot boot 'recoveryname'.img, once time you are in twrp flash the installer from the inside. Reboot to recovery again and flash magisk.
When you need to update you have two ways:
1 download the full ROM zip and place it in your main storage folder (sd card);
Update via local update but don't reboot;
Open magisk and download and install twrp a/b retention script and don't reboot yet;
Go in the magisk main page and install it as installation in the inactive slot (after OTA);
Reboot and enjoy.
2 download the full zip;
Reboot in twrp;
Flash rom + twrp installer;
Reboot to recovery;
Flash magisk;
Reboot and done.

Oneplus 7 Pro can install updates anymore

Hello xda-comunity
I'm unable to install the oxygenos update 9.5.8 GM21BA
So I was following this guide to unlock my bootloader and root my phone with magisk.
All went well. I got the notification that there is a new update (see above)
In the guide there was a step - by - step instruction on how to update the phone and keep root. I did that.
And now when try to install the update I get a bootloop into recovery. I figured out that the op7pro is a 2 slot phone ( slot a, slot b) and when I install a update it sets the for example slot b (where the update is installed) as default.
So when something goes wrong it just loads up the "previous" slot (in this example slot a) as default again and says that the update failed to install. Correct me if I'm wrong .
And now to the my problem, the phone doesn't load on slot b nor does it default back to slot a, instead I get a recovery bootloop when I'm in slot b.
The fix here is to flash twrp via fastboot and load slot a again, my phone then boots up like normal.
And here is the problem I can't install the update because I probably messed up slot b.
I know it's a long post and I appreciate every possible answer. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the quick response I will try that as soon as I'm home from work. How do I find the ota? Can I download it? Or is it saves in a folder on the phone? Because I downloaded it like 3 times now.

Sorry I worded that oddly.
If you want to keep it stock then:
Wipe Data (Optional but recommended), Dalvik.
Flash the OTA, TWRP Installer.
Reboot to Recovery.
Flash the OTA, TWRP Installer again.
Reboot to Recovery.
Flash Magisk and/or kernels (Step is optional)
Reboot system
If youre installing a custom ROM like Havoc then:
Wipe Data, Dalvik.
Flash the OTA, ROM then TWRP Installer.
Reboot to Recovery.
Flash the ROM, TWRP Installer again.
Reboot to Recovery.
Flash GApps and Magisk (Step is optional)
Reboot system

You can drag the files back into the root of your phone and flash them on the other slot. You could ADB fastboot but just dragging the zips to your phone is easier in my opinion.

Yes you flash on both slots. If youve already flashed both then flash magisk and reboot to system. It should take about 10min to boot so dont worry.
Edit: If youre getting a bootloop or having bugs then follow this https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7-pro/how-to/rom-stock-f to get back to stock international
Then follow https://forum.xda-developers.com/on...nt/recovery-unofficial-twrp-recovery-t3931322 then flash Magisk and reboot
This is ONLY if you cannot get it to boot after updating

Ok but how do i do that when slot b is empty?
I dont know how to put files on slot b.
When I switch slots I have to reboot.
I can only boot into system on slot a.

Your link gets me to the front page of the Oneplus 7 pro Guides, News, etc....
It should've taken you to the Fastboot thread. Look at this one instead https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7-pro/how-to/rom-stock-fastboot-roms-oneplus-7-pro-t3931424
Alright i flashed the ROM new
Was able to install the newest ota just perfect.
Kept it unrooted, I think I'm gonna let it unrooted because of all the work I have to do Everytime a new ota comes (maybe later when the phone is older)
Thank you so much for your help.

OnePlus 7 Pro Flashing doesn't work properly

Hey guys,
so first of all I wanna let you know that my device is not bricked or something (it was a couple of times though).
But let's get started with my issue. For me, personally, I have experienced that the slot system (A/B Slot) doesn't work that good. I had a OnePlus 3T before and I never had any problems with flashing, but now...
My impression is that it's a lot easier to brick its' device than before. Every time I want to flash a new OS I gotta use the msmtool.
1. I boot to recovery mode through the OS
2. I boot to fastboot trough the OOS stock recovery
3. I try to flash TWRP to erase the system
4. Flashing works, but I can no longer boot into recovery mode
5. I have a bootloop (fastboot mode only)
6. I have to use that msmtool
7. I have some old OOS (9.5.5 or something)
8. I unlock the bootloader through the OS & fastboot
9. I boot into TWRP, delete everything and flash another ROM
10. Everything works and the cicle begins again
I really don't know why I'm always stuck in that bootloop... Maybe you guys could help me and give me your personal opinion on the slot system?
I totally know that feeling. I started with a tmo op7p, flashed international, unlocked bootloader, try to boot TWRP, and nope. Switch slot, it works. Flash it, great. Make a backup with TWRP of my working system, flash ROMaur, won't do anything but boot to TWRP. Open TWRP file manager and every file on internal storage is a ton of folders with jumbled strings of letters and numbers for names. MSM tool back to intl stock, try lineage... Nope. Keeps telling me to do a factory reset. I did, but I do another and still boot loop. MSM to intl, try other roms, same outcome.
I can unlock my bootloader and root it and run intl stock but that's it.

Doing it wrong.
If you are currently rooted and a new OS comes out you can do the following and you don't need to flash with TWRP or use a computer.
1. Download the full OTA. You can use Oxygen updater to do that or use a link in the stock ROM section on this site.
2. Make sure you have the Magisk and the TWRP zip on the phone.
3. Do a local update in the system area but do not reboot.
4. Launch Magisk manager and select install.
5. Use the OTA install option to inactive slot.
6. Now you can reboot. You have installed the new OS and root also.
7. Once rebooted do another local install. This will install in the slot that you were just running. It will fail the first time, but work the second time.
8. Repeat 4.
9. Repeat 5.
10 . Repeat 6.
You now have both slots with the same OS and rooted.
If you want to install TWRP.
Launch Magisk and install the TWRP zip.
Reboot into recovery. This is important because you cannot boot in slot with TWRP unless Magisk in installed.
Now flash the Magisk image file.
Now in TWRP select the other slot and reboot into recovery.
In recovery install Magisk image to this slot.
Now you have TWRP and Magisk in both slots.
I have done it that way since 9.5.7 and have not had an issue.

Irrelevant ISH, but ever had that one bootloop where it only bootloops at the "Warning Bootloader unlocked screen" constantly? When I try to access fastboot, it'll just go straight to recovery without even waiting for input (to my luck, of course, until I had to uninstall magisk in full, reinstall, make sure TWRP was reflashed and did the "Fix recovery bootloop", though that wasn't the seemingly the issue). The issue got resolved, but it was very scary for that to have happened as soon as i enabled sudohide (I always had it work, but with huge problems, but never enough to bootloop me to death)

If you install TWRP on a 7 Pro without installing Magisk you will absolutely boot loop. If you wipe the system in one slot and have a differing ROM from the active slot you can in fact boot loop. Although the systems are different, the settings between the systems are shared.
Sorry to say, but nothing about those steps is correct. Follow some guides in the guides section to get aquatinted with the A/B system

You are absolutely incorrect.
When going from 9.5.10 to 9.5.11 and all my previous upgrades it has been:
1. Local install of the new OS with a full OTA since I am rooted.
2. Do not reboot.
3. Install Magisk to inactive slot.
4. Reboot (Slot will automatically switch to the one recently updated).
5. Local install of OS into the other slot, fails first time, do it again.
6. Install Magisk into inactive slot.
7. Reboot. (Slot will switch to recently updated slot).
8. Both slots now have latest OS and are rooted.
You can also install TWRP if you like.
No computer needed.
This works.

That's completely unnecessary and just avoiding the purpose of the a/b system.
All it would take is:
1. Local install
2. Install magisk to inactive slot

I am stuck on twrp and cant boot up [SUPER STRESSED PLS HELP!!!]

Ok. I am not a developer. I am a teenager just messing around with my phone. Basically, the whole story is that I tried updating my ota while keeping root and twrp right and i was following the video. everything was going smoothily until i got back and for some reason my magisk couldn't set up correctly. I twas there but it wasn't setting up the files and whatnot. So i restarted and got into twrp recovery. Based on some xda forums and threads and a few youtube videos I gifured out that my twrp couldn't detect ANTHING on my phone's internal storage. SO i ended up formatting the data and when i tried rebooting the system it didn't boot up it just brought me straight back to twrp. PLS HELP. Thank you.
someone who is super knowledgeable would be greatly appreciated. This phone means a lot to me and I don't want it to break! PLS! thanks again.
download the OOS full zip, TWRP v70, and magisk v20
move to your device while in TWRP
from twrp install the OS full zip
Install TWRP
Reboot back to TWRP
Install Magisk
Boot to OS.
future reference to update. Download full zip from Oxygen Updater or System Updates
go to system updates and click on gear icon and local install
click on OS full zip
once done DO NOT REBOOT
go to magisk and install twrp as magisk module (DO NOT REBOOT)
install magisk via After OTA Install.
Reboot

If not just do the msm restore i know its frustrating but you have to do a lot of reading research you can restore your phone
I think it's best you flash a fastboot ROM since you have already lost all your data.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7-pro/how-to/rom-stock-fastboot-roms-oneplus-7-pro-t3931424
Calm down, have a cup of coffee, charge your phone for a bit and then follow this guide. Good luck.
EDIT: Important to note that you can hold down vol + and vol - immediately when booting to get into fastboot
Try to format Data in twrp, not the factory reset or data wipe, the one where u type yes, then reboot back to twrp and see if you can mount data. If all else fails use the msm tool

I would try what the above poster said and use the fastboot Rom first. What model device do u have?
Use MSM download tool to restore your phone.
As advised previously, I would download the latest Fastboot pack from this thread. Unpack the zip file and then use the batch files to install the partitions you want. I would recommend the flash-all one.
After that, I would recommend buying similar items to the following :
USB C to USB 3.0 Male Adapter
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07KXHNY5F
SanDisk Ultra USB Type-C 16 GB
https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01BUSMYHC
This will let you hold the files required for fixing your issues on a usb drive which you can use with your phone, the interface is for using the same with your computer to transfer the files. If you keep the usb drive with you then you should be able to resolve issues as long as you can get TWRP installed.
TWRP will allow you load/flash files from the usb drive, just tap on the "Storage" button and you'll see the USB storage as an option. Make sure anything you want is in the "Android" folder on the drive.
I would definitely recommend downloading TWRP, Magisk v20 and the full latest release of OOS and keeping these on the drive, then you know you have a route back to a working phone.
For future reference, if you root your phone you cannot install an OTA, you must install the full zip.
Also, if you flash TWRP, you have to install Magisk afterward to retain root privileges.

by fastboot rom is that just the bootloader? because as of now that still works i just don't know ho to use it. only twrp recovery isn't working and its really stressing meeee. does that mean i can flash things via the bootloader mode or whatever its called; fastboot? thx for the help its relieving my stress. im just happy that my phone isnt bricked. also my bootloader IS unlocked so i think that helps. i look forward to ur response!
This phone is quite troublesome to flash lol I had problems aswell, bricked 3/4 times! I used msm tool to recover It.
I figured out how things works after multiple Bad results.
I think things are getting more complicated year After year

I mean thats learning by doing and everyone did that ( I struggled with OP6), but if you get behind this whole a/b scheme and understand what does what and when to flash it you wont brick anything (unless you try pre alpha recoveries and the recovery fails).
So i think the best option is to either stay stock (stock is nearly perfect rn, just if you need magisk install it) or to "learn" how to resolve some issues youll get when flashing custom roms
the worst thing you can do is to just follow some guides and wonder if something fails
