Why does TomTom 4.4 scroll smoothly on a Himalaya or Alpine, but TomTom 5 jerks.
4.4 and 5 are both smooth on an HP 6315, which has a slower CPU.
Any ideas?
I have tried with Socket, Leadtek, and TomTom's own BT GPS mk 2 receiver, and no difference, so it's not a speed issue I don't think.
(Yes, I have tried the 5.10 update, but it doesn't make any difference)
I never used 4.4, but 5 is much smoother than 3. Though I'm sure that doesn't help.
Cheers
Ant
hi if you want it to get rid of all the jerks remove all your poi pictures and use the tomtom selection and you will find it goes smooth again
oh if you use the pocket gps safty camera setup those work ok
What I've found works pretty well if you don't wanna use the POI's (which I'm currently trying to use to see if the random crashes have got better on tt5.10) is to turn them off, but to use the warning that you can set up to let you know before you hit chosen POIs. Very useful and I don't think it causes the crashes as they're not showing on the map.
Ant
 should it scroll smoothly??!!
Mine updates the screen every second or thereabouts, is that not what it's supposed to do?
[edit]Turned off POI, and it scrolls smoothly now! Much nicer, shame you cant have the POI on as well though, even the tomtom own ones slow the map down
OK so turning off some POI fixes it, but why would the HP with less RAM and a slower CPU scroll smoothly where an Alpine or Himalaya will not?
No changes to settings between the two.
Is the graphics chip on them that much worse?
Were you running it from the same SD card, apparently that makes a difference, I honestly didn't know it was supposed to scroll smoothly, I'm going to have a play later to see if I can work out what makes it go jerky.
i've got my tt5 running off the sd card and it runs fine on my jam/vpa.Also download that patch that's floating around these forums somewhere,i've had no more crashes with the poi since.I found that the poi that made my tt5 crash was the cash dispenser one,it only ever crashed when that was turned on.Also, any body know where i can get the safety camera poi from?cheers
I've got the patch (funnily enough as it was me that posted it  )
You can get the speed camera POIs from www.pocketgps.co.uk
cheers for that patch then, works great!I was one step ahead of you on pocket gps though,i googled and found it,cheers anyway just installed the speed camera software and the voice overs that you can have with them, works well!!!!
Which speed camera software are you using with TT5 that will give you voice prompts ???
It's here http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/tomtom-poi-alerts.php .It replaces the crappy sounds you get with voice promts for speed cameras and speeds etc
Sorry forgot the other bit of the q-the software is on the same site. It's here http://www.easydevices.co.uk/sp/searchbox13/main.asp?sitepages=Downloads .Install that then install the voice promts.Hope this helps
I had a bit of a play around with this last night and found out the following.
If you enable, but don't show the POIs (you still get proximity warnings this way) - scrolling is smooth even with 3rd party POIs
if you enable and show ONLY POIs that come with TTN5 - scrolling is smooth
The second you show ANY 3rd party POI, no matter how small (I used Oxford park and rides as there are only 5 of them) the scrolling is jerky.
Is there a way to move the POIs to the phones internal memory to see if that speeds them up?
You'd have to have tomtom installed on your phones storage and leave the maps on your sd card, although I have the speed camera poi and some other 3rd party poi and mine seems to run smooth.Seems very strange all this....

That's how mine is setup, where are your 3rd party POIs?
And where on the phone should I put my 3rd party POIs in order for TTN5 to recognise them?
You should put them all in the file great-britain-map.Extract them from the zip and just put the OV2. and bmp. file of the poi in there.Don't create another folder within the map folder just dump them in there among the other files in there otherwise tt wouldn't find them.hope that helps.I have mine all installed on the sd card-maybe try this if this doesn't work?although if anywhere i would of thought it would run better of the phones storage :?:
Eh??
That's what I said, they are currently installed on my storage card in the maps directory, I want to try them on the phone's own memory to see if it speeds it up at all. Is that possible?
Also, what POI's do you have installed, if it's the speed cameras, do you have the individual ones or the single file version?
oh.misunderstood!you'll have to re-install it into file explorer-program files.i downloaded the speed camera poi, unzipped them and put all the ov2 and bmp files in one at a time
Weird, it sounds like we have identical setups, but on your it works and on mine it jerks (ooh poetry!)
I assume then that you have all speed camera POIs set to show and also to give you warnings?
What type of SD card do you have?
Hello everyone,
I am new to this forum. I decided to register here after I completed my android project.
I created a program that can detect movements and save pictures of the moving objects. Phone has to remain static in order to work properly. The program also features separate address book. Address book keeps phone numbers for SMS notification. In order to activate that you have to create a new contact then long press the item in the list. The program creates folder on memory card where it saves the pictures. The speed is very high on Galaxy S. You can throw something fast and phone still snaps the flying object if it passes by the camera.
The program has many settings that can dramatically alter the performance. Settings have to be adjusted in accordance with the lighting conditions.
I tested app only on 2.2 Vibrant. I am really curious to see how it works on other 2.2 devices.
ARMv7 processor is a must!!
Please give me some feedback!
App is called Motion Recorder
this sounds like a great app. gonna try it now on my incredible.
My app MobileWebCam also does this (simpler detection algorithm I suppose) and can automatically save, upload the pictures or send email:
Development Thread is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=950933
Are you interested in sharing your motion detection code? Possibly we could combine functionality of both apps?
dirtsky, If you have any questions or if you find any bugs please write in this thread.
The program is little hard to use so feel free to ask.
_miha_, Mine detects motion by analyzing color. What about yours?
How do you send e-mail without the annoying pop up?

My motion detection is three steps: Image is converted to grey, then I max every pixel with the ones around to remove the flickering pixels (especially needed for night/low contrast situations) and calc the difference between the last and this new pixels. Some magic value (which should better be configurable later decides about the motion. Problem is this is very slow (should use the ndk but only began working with it recently) so I have to scale down the image before which is bad for small/distant moving objects.
Email: Is not sent with Android/Intent. I use JavaMail. I had some difficulties with the libs but got it working somehow (and even more difficulties with proguard which I needed because file size is getting too large without using it).
_miha_, did you test my app? How does it stack up against yours in terms of performance?
I cant seem to find where the images are being saved on my SDcard. Epic 4G Froyo ec05 midNight Rom
I looked for the folder "Motion Recorder" and i dont see it. and theres nothing in the Gallery
zman519, since your device is basically Galaxy S type it will save in internal memory(aka 14 GB "SD card").
Please let me know if you find the folder there.
I have total 105 installs out which 35 are active. Is it considered as bad result?
UPDATE: 59 active installs out of 109 which makes it >50%. Is it good?

The Epic does not have an internal sdcard. That must be the problem. I looked around with root explorer and did not see the folder.
Sent from the Drivers Seat of my Suby txting and Driving doing 100MPH+ in a school zone! Ha.
zman519, thank you for feedback, I will fix that and let you know once the update is ready. It should not take more than half an hour.
Question to developers:
My program saves pictures to the following path:
String path = "/sdcard/Motion Recorder/TakenOn" +...
Why does it not automatically save to external sd card in the case when there is no internal sd?
UPDATE. I figured out myself. Working on update that allows user to choose between internal and external memory.
Hello dev,
I tried it on my DHD - it crashes and don't save settings.
I just updated to v0.42 which adds support for the external storage. Just go to settings and tap the checkbox. Unfortunately I have not tested the new feature on the actual hardware because I do not have one at the moment. So please, those of you who can test it please let me know if it does not work.
drast-x, Thank you for the feedback. Please give me some more details. When does it crash? After you hit the start? When you hit the start do you get the preview from the camera? Unfortunately settings do not save after the exit except contacts...
Did it happen on:Jun 11, 2011 9:32:07 PM ? I ask you this because Developer console shows me one crash that occurred at that time:
java.lang.RuntimeException: Fail to connect to camera service
at android.hardware.Camera.native_setup(Native Method)
at android.hardware.Camera.<init>(Camera.java:294)
at android.hardware.Camera.open(Camera.java:271)
Does saving pictures work on any of the phones except Epic 4g?
Thank you
I updated to v0.45
Now settings will save. Motion Recorder 0.45
Many thanks to the user of my app who sent this feedback:
"force close when start button clicked in nexus".
It turns out Nexus One (or S?) does not support either VGA or QVGA preview frames. So I had to fix this issue by requesting the supported resolutions. Very surprised by this issue. I expected that Android OS would figure this out on its own...
Thus new version 0.45.5 is supposed to fix the issue. I do not have Nexus One so I am not 100% about the fix. Those of you who are reading this and have Nexus One, please try new version!
Thank you!
Have you tried first reducing your image resolution to something ridiculously small like 32x32 and apply a DCT to keep only the low frequencies?
This might offer much better performance.
You can perform very good

So a couple years ago I got my first android phone, and it included 25gb of dropbox free for 2 years. I didn't care much for cloud storage back then because it still didn't work that well. The dropbox app back then was pretty much garbage, all it did was give you a slightly cleaner interface for the website version (which also just is not very useful for my purposes).
All I want to do is sync/mirror my music library, so when I download a song on my pc, it eventually shows up on my phone to be played. Maybe that was harder to do a couple years ago, but today that seems like a pretty simple thing with how much free/cheap cloud storage there is and how fast our devices are.
Yet I just spent the last day messing with drop box (while my 2 free years ran out Galaxy S5 which luckily gave me another 2 years of dropbox, this time at 50gb), and also tried the other stuff my new phone came with, and seemingly none of them actually can sync anything. They talk all about that, yet the mobile apps are still terrible. Dropbox, box and even tried samsung link. None of them care to sync anything onto your phone, they just offer convenient/single file only access.
I found dropbox folder downloader, so I could at least get my initial library in with that.. Of course even that didn't work at first - since the S5 comes with little storage - my music library was 11gb - and the S5 only has about 9gb free with all the bloat samsung loads it up with. (9gb free for a $900 phone, thanks samsung) . Anyways i had a 32gb sd card laying around i got for free years ago, so I should be good to go. Nope... 4.4 doesn't allow you to write to your sd card in any useful fashion. Anyways I got that fixed, and its currently downloading my library.
My question is:
How can I make this easier. I mean next time I want to do that again, it takes several hours.. (it will be faster next time since it would just have to check each file rather then download them all, but still likely slow).
All i want is a simple cloud storage that does what people generally think it does - fully sync my stuff between my devices. Is there any service (with both pc and mobile apps) out there that does this?
Preferably a way I can get dropbox to do it, but I'll pay for a different service/app if theres a better way.

Well I find that Google drive is pretty good for syncing to different devices. I use it for certain files so maybe you could try that to see if it works for you.

Yea I've used drive lots too. It doesn't sync anything to android.
Google drive is pretty much exactly like dropbox in functionality.. It will only sync to desktop, the mobile app doesn't do it.
The only automatic function it has, is auto image backup to drive, and the drive app itself doesn't do that, the google+ app does. And it works quite well for it what it is. But it only does that - backup images. And one way only (it doesn't really sync, and while there does seem to be a desktop app, it's also just called backup, not sync). Plus even though the pics used up your drive space, they were not accessible through google drive, just google+. Though they JUST fixed that, like the last day or so it seems to have that functionality now, tho it still only has a few pics from my new phone, my ones from my old phone say "your older pictures will show here soon".
So to go the other way (pc to phone) i'll have to wait on that, and link my pc pics folder to that one folder (if it allows it).
So yea its nice for photos, but I see no way to do any of that for music. There was an article on the frontpage for some info about how to do phone to google drive for music, but it wasn't "syncing" - wasn't automatic, and again, only one way.
I know drive and dropbox have decent api's, so there is probably some more complex way to set them up to sync, just not sure how yet. Plus there are some specific music services out there, but I don't know even if any of those sync to mobile.

Yah that's what I'm guessing to. All other cloud services are pretty much the same in terms of what they offer but I guess none sync to android very well. If you want to try another syncing app you may want to look at bittorent sync which may be what your looking for.
I think you can use an app for that. Try foldersync https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=dk.tacit.android.foldersync.lite
Guys I have problem with Android smartphones. I am not the youngest anymore and remember the first PCs and first smartphones with 32x less memory then an average handheld device has today. I played with them all and know what they could do. The thing that still continues to surprise me till today on Android is WHY the heck can't an app stay in memory without being quit on the first occasion?? I really think that Android will never be usable for any serious work if things keep closing or reloading just after a few switches between apps!
Some examples: why can't I switch between Chrome browser and Onenote to type something without having that webpage be reloaded again using more data and sucking more battery power? I learned not to risk writing any bigger post into some forum lately because if I would have to switch to another tab to check some info or switch to another app the in progress text would most likely be lost because webpage would reload! Why is it so risky to switch out of some game to write a message or check calendar because it is very likely to be killed and my progress lost? The phones I used recently (Xiaomi Mi2s, Xperia Z3 compact, Xperia Z5 compact) have frikin 2GB of memory, so I wonder if nowadays apps are so much more memory demanding then before that this is simply still not sufficient. I just checked settings and some apps I just tested use few tens of MB, so it is still comparable to the times of Windows 98 or Windows mobile IMHO.
My first smartphone was windows mobile Samsung Omnia II with just around 90MB of usable memory and let me tell you that this problem was not happening on it! I could have several tabs with webpages (even non mobile versions) open and could safely switch on the camera, take pictures, write an sms and go back without having to worry that anything will be closed or reloaded! Why can't I open a camera app on Android and take a photo without having the previously open app be closed?
I can even compare today's android phones to one of my oldest pcs back in year 2000 or so. Imagine that it had just 64MB of RAM. I could have open many webpages in Internet Explorer (yeah it was far the best at that time , a few editors for web and text editing and I could even play some game and alt+tab back and forth without any problem! That was Windows 98 guys. Of course you will tell me that today's web pages for example are much bigger then in 2000. OK but what about mobile versions huh? I don't think they are that big so a phone with 2GB of RAM would choke.
I always thought that apps are supposed to be paused/frozen when I switch out of them but left in memory. Unfortunately it seems apps are being killed surprisingly often even when settings / memory shows hundreds of RAM free. The thing that is even more weird to me is that apps I had open just a few seconds ago are being closed upon switching to some other one and back, but the ones which I had active hours ago often stay in memory! That does not make much sense. Why doesn't android kill the longest not active apps first instead? OK, so do I have to buy OnePlus 3 or Meizu Pro 6 with 6GB of RAM to be able to keep simple 3 apps open without worrying that they will reload when switching out of them? As I showed this does not happen on much older devices with similar specs, so is this some fundamental flaw/feature of Android architecture or am I missing some simple explanation?
If you have experience with Windows Phones or iOS regarding this please share and compare.
So it seems everybody agrees
But I would really like to know some of your experience with other phones from the fruit company for example...
java

> Why doesn't android kill the longest not active apps first instead?
There is some heuristic going on that calculate the oom priority and modifies /proc/PID/oom_adj so. For example (foreground) services have lower oom_adj (less likely to be killed by oom-killer). Actually I ended up adding code to my app that overrides /proc/PID/oom_adj to a really low number to keep it running (but that requires root - I also dont understand why *the user* does not have a chance to say "hey android keep running this app in the background!")
> Unfortunately it seems apps are being killed surprisingly often even when settings / memory shows hundreds of RAM free
Yeah that "low memory value" (ie when to kick off the oom-killer) is also set somewhere in /proc (?) It's 200MB on my phone with 2 gigs ram IIRC. To test what's getting killed (and whenl, etc.) this app is superb: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tspoon.androidtoolbelt
it's all even more annoying because starting even basic apps (like dialer or contacts etc. etc.) takes even seconds(!) if they are not in memory already (on any phone!) ... oh, well, java
Thanks for a reply! Have anybody tried MIUI? There is an option to lock an application and supposedly prevent it from being killed when multitasking. Just swipe up in tasks view and it marks it with a lock. I have just read this article and it seems manufacturers set these LMK values. I have a feeling they are really high for Sony phones. Maybe if I root mine I would be able to change those. Unfortunately it seems without root I cannot even view these values. They show as 0 in /sys/module/lowmemorykiller/parameters/ and cannot be opened. I can't open those oom files either.
yeah, defo need root for this
Oh and it gets worse. Because of this behaviour many apps use a nasty trick of setting up an alarm (usually with wake lock) triggered every second to make sure they are running (if a process is not running and there is an alarm for that process set up, the process is started).
So what happens is that the OOM/low-memory killer kills the app it is started by android framework the next second ... and it might get killed by oom-kiler again ...
It's interesting to run "apktool d foobar.apk" and grep the smali for "AlarmManager.set" on apps that want to run in the background ...
CleanMaster app is good and it saved me from exhausted internal capacity issues many times (on Z3Compact) and it also shows apps which frequently restart. Is that because of what you just wrote? I remember it was Pinterest a lot for example.

Oh yeah thought of that too! But I got like 20 folders lol, I know I wont often look at the "Files" but yeah something to try. Also there is a folder called PICTURES and my folders were there before and I moved them to DCIM because when I am trying to share something to Instagram I cant see those folders on the IG app. That was the main reason behind the idea to move these folders into DCIM.
But I will try and move these folders outside of DCIM (but wont put them inside Pictures folder). Thanks mate!

It's not present in my case - (QPR 3.1 November). My it's the issue with mixed pictures from your own reposity and Google Photos / taken pictures by 7Pro?

Can't complain. Mine are loud and clear - even with loud speaker.
Battery is not that great (How to check SOT?)
It's been good for me - 8,5 hrs SOT with approx. 35-40 hrs of standby. Both on stable 13 and QPR (2, 3 and now on 3,1 looks similar)
Inability to organise apps into folders in the Apps screen. OR to sort them etc: I miss this on Samsung devices etc, cant even sort them.....WHYYY?
I don't use folders, but agree - pixel launcher is ****ty as f*ck. I use Nova Launcher most of the time - folders do work there.
Sometimes when I press TALK button on my Subaru and ask “Call a person” it doesn’t work - Android auto is really finicky
No opinion.
Gallery/Photos app: So I organise photos into folders. And I moved my photos from one device to P7P and I put all the folders into the DCIM folder. Now when I open the Photos app all these photos are shown under Camera
Why not backed up in Google Photos cloud? It works great for me - sync between devices, web etc.
after the last update (today 8november) i noticed something that could be a new bug (i hope): in the stock camera app i use the level to measure the tilt. it worked great but after the update that level is tilted about 3-4°: i.e. i was taking a photo of the horizon on the sea (leveled through the grid) and the level measure 3 or 4° of tilt
I probably have nowhere near the amount of photos as you, and based on what I read, I'm guessing they're local photos, but the gallery thing could be solved by just getting a new gallery app rather than Photos. QuickPic was the go-to back in the day before they sold to another company. When that happened, I found Piktures to be a fast and pretty alternative. There might've also been a modded QuickPic app on XDA. Not sure on that since I just use Photos.
Battery and call quality, I can't complain. Battery is all dependent on the user, so there's always that.
Sometimes the double tap to wake doesn’t work
Now this here works flawlessly with out a case, but I found it easier to double tap near the camera bar. It seems to activate more when it's up higher.

Got these questions if anyone can answer or even facing themselves please
Slow in loading the gallery - scrolling through the list and the pictures load pixellated and take some time to load and sometimes the thumbnails wont even come up
It's not present in my case - (QPR 3.1 November). My it's the issue with mixed pictures from your own reposity and Google Photos / taken pictures by 7Pro?
Edited a video of 39 secs (90mb) to 14 secs (108mb) - WTF?? I took a video with P7P which was 39 seconds and the size was 90MB. Then I edited the video cut it to 14 seconds and now the size of the video shows up as 108MB
No idea - maybe it's trying to save in better quality that it already is?

Got similar problem - especially when Face Unlock with option to skip lockscreen is enabled.
Video - zoom switching is laggy [This is known issue across the OEM]

Thanks for the reply mate
Yeah My gallery consists of photos taken by Samsung, Apple and this phone too. Even in the beta its all pixellated.
Also I found another issue with IG app when I am trying to upload videos to my feed. Selecting multiple photos option and selecting pictures works fine, but videos wont get selected. These videos are taken through the phone too. Support team says to update the app but still the same. Cleared cache, re-installed and done everything, but still the same.

Yeah I am thinking to root the phone soon. But a little bit worried about all these cyber attacks happening in Australia now. But Ill try the 3rd party apps, obvio I prefer if the native app has that option but cant do anything now
The slide to type on Gboard is not working instantaneously when typing messages from notifications (such as whatsapp).
